Jeff --

I am for whatever is the best strategy to keep Trump from winning the nomination.

A couple of days ago, it looked like what Willard said -- vote Rubio in Florida and Kasich in Ohio. These winner take all states can give a minority candidate a huge advantage in a multi candidate race.

Now I am not so sure. Maybe you are right and Rubio should drop out. Kasich I think should stay and fight for Ohio.

If Trump wins both Ohio and Florida he will be very hard to stop. But propping Rubio up may be not worth the effort. But no question about it we have to urge our Florida friends to vote FOR one or the other, because just voting for someone other than Trump is not going to be effective.

squaredance

There are just more Progs in Michigan--it is like mini California right in the Midwest.

From a high level view, the Demos are a coalition between: 1) (mostly white) Progs, 2) Minorities, 3) Government apparatchiks, and Unions, and since the larger unions now are most government workers or teachers/academics, this last group is mostly subsumed in one of the others.

The (mostly white) Progs broke for a real, open Prog. Snaders if giving out Leninist/Maoist/Trotskyite propaganda straight from the 1930s. That about a "dog whistle"--they just cannot help themselves.

I do not see the mystery in Sanders' win at all.

That both Cruz and Trump did so well there is more of a puzzle, and no, it was not just that mysterious, and much maligned creature, "the working class voter" who accounts for it.

common man

Anyone get the final total votes cast R v D in the states last evening. I would be interested in seeing them if you know where I can go to look. Especially Michigan. I suspect despite both contests being heavily contested, that R votes exceed D votes again, like they have in most states that have voted to date.

Miss Marple 2

I see that Fiorina, who was ignored for months, is now getting praise for her speech today endorsing Cruz.

Mara Liason says that "she had found her calling" as the "ideal surrogate."

If you ask me, the relief they felt with her speech tells me Cruz isn't making the case. Maybe she could give him tips.

I still wish I could vote for her. She is the only candidate I gave a measly donation to, because I wanted to encourage her.

I blame the RNC for letting the networks marginalize her.

new lurker

mm, I'm afriad that Carly is definitely marginalized now that she is endorsing Cruz (whom I voted for)in hopes that he will give her the vp spot. I had expected more for her.
Very sad.

Guy (I look serious when I bend my neck just so) Benson is helping Hugh Hewitt today. I missed the first 45 min so I don't know how many times KKK was mentioned. What I did catch was Bendson making it clear that Trump is all middle-finger all the time.

I disagree. Trump is all points in between and that is part of the appeal.

Romney is a good example of a pussy going middle-finger without ever being a centrist jerk. That is why Romney set so many people off when he went Varsity so fast.

Leave the insults to the pros, Mitt.

Here is the ransom note version of a story I posted earlier:

http://twitchy.com/2016/03/09/daily-caller-senior-editor-alleges-trump-thug-assaulted-michelle-fields-after-presser/

Reading the comments for the voting/arm-wrestling contest for most interesting man it occurred to me what is so wrong with today's scene.

This Weinstein dude, who, incredibly enough, is shacking up the the gorgeous Michelle Fields, responds to the assault on his squeeze by taking to Twitter.

????

I would put a great many of my fellow commenters here in the same category as me when it comes to any bs that befalls my significant other.

While dating a bumbling dope managed to knock my wife over while pushing forward in a line at Disneyland. While helping her up with my left hand, I gripped the back of his neck with my right hand.

His apology came well before my 140 character limit was consumed.

Fields needs to find a Clint Eastwood type and dump the weakling.

Breaking News via FOX, Marco Rubio tells Megyn: "I am not dropping out of the is race."

Charles Payne He definitely sounded somewhat contrite, almost apologetic Tammy, in that little clip we heard. Little Marco doesn't want to play the game any more, and he hasn't played it well, but it did sen to get under Donald Trump's skin.

Tammy Bruce: Well it did, but it didn't. This is not a Frat house. right? But this is the problem with Marco Rubio. Once again he clearly took someone's advice---It was bad. He went with it anyway and it hurt him. The same situation with The Gang Of Eight. So this is his story, and this is why even 14% as we discussed earlier in Florida, don't even know what to think of him...It's an amazing situation to me. He clearly was using the Senate to get to somewhere else. He can't show anything for it. The people of Florida are maybe ambivalent at best? That's not a good place to be at, and he's still so young to where he is still taking the advice of others, doesn't know how to judge it properly. Maybe as VP for 8 years, maybe then the Repub's can control the White House for 16 years, if they make the right decision...

Over to the Lou Dobbs Show.

Lou Dobbs opens showing video clip of illegal kids swarming across our Border and then plays this clip of an Arizona Sheriff from Penol(sp) County Arizona:

Lou: Critics blasting President Obama saying he has unilaterally implemented Amnesty by handcuffing Border Patrol Agents. Listen to Sheriff Paul Babeau, of Penol, County Arizona:

Sherrif: What's happening now is that when an illegal is apprehended and they're supposed to be given a promise to appear, a notice to appear. That's not even happening. It could be 30, 60 , 90 days, some point out. We already know, it's been proven, that a majority of these individuals will never show up for their Court Hearing. So this is a complete sham. So the fact that the President is saying, "Well this is our process," basically it is Defacto Amnesty, because there is no consequence, there is no enforcement of the Law, and there is no tracking of where that person is.

Lou: When the Sheriff says it is a sham he means it is a sham along the entire Mexican Border.

Miss Marple 2

"My father carried mail on his back."

Kasich seems to be re-phrasing Trump's positions as his own.

Fair trade not free trade.
Hold those who break agreement accountable.
Deal with currency manipulation.
Tell people like Carrier they are jeopardizing trade.

Jeff Dobbs

Wait. There's another Dem debate tonight?

I'm so old I remember back when the Dems were only going to hold six debates total on the way to coronating Hillary.

Something seems to have gone amiss. Awry. Askew. A something or other.

MM:
Kasich uses strawman.

"Let's imagine if we stop trading."

He should try the Obama way...

"There are those who say we should stop trading altogether. Never trade anything again. And those who say we should trade our souls to the devil. I reject that false choice...."

Captain Hate

Some gun grabber is running against Twitch in the primary; this clown is just throwing money away on these ads where he sucks up to 404.

Miss Marple 2

Jeff,

HA! Good illustration!

I couldn't believe he said it.

And I couldn't believe Greta didn't call him on it.

Theo

Jeff -

It is just the damndext situation. Trump has gotten less than 35 percent of the votes cast so far, would lose to any of the other three remaining candidates one on one and yet, because of the calendar and the rules will be very hard to stop.

Nate Silver pointed out the other day that under Dem rules, Trump would be easily denied the nomination.

I am not aware of a coherent plan to stop him. No one will coordinate with anyone because everyone sees themselves as the eventual winner.

What a nightmare.

Miss Marple 2

Captain Hate,

I would ask you to take over watching this town hall, since I have to go pick up my granddaughter in about 10 minutes.

However, I am afraid that you would have a stroke listening to this, so everyone else will have to switch channels and watch the rest. LOL!

daddy

Tammy sums it up in a nutshell. Rubio consistently takes bad advice...

Tammy has Little Marco's number.

I agree Capt and Miss M.

When you compare Marco to Ted Cruz, basically same age, same heritage, similar background in many ways, one looks like an adult and one looks like a kid wet behind the ear. Whatever anyone says about Ted Cruz, he is his own man and knows where he stands and what he believes in, and he doesn't need a team of advisors to tell him what he thinks. Being susceptible to being told what to think is probably one of the reasons why the GOPe latched their broken Jeb! bandwagon to him.

NK

MissM- well yeah. He's telling the marks what they want to hear. Politicians aren't very bright, they simply imitate what works. It worked for Trump, and his internationalist money flow syndication career has been contrary to those positions (including selling EB-5 visas) so if they believe Trump they'll definitely believe the mailman's son from Ohio.

How in hell does a candidate for an executive position blow this?

HARRISBURG — Failure to submit 2,000 valid nominating signatures could keep Ohio Gov. John Kasich off the Pennsylvania primary ballot, but only if a court finds an objection to the signature count wasn’t filed 13 minutes too late.

Attorneys for Mr. Kasich and the objector have stipulated that the campaign filed no more than 2,184 signatures with the state, and that 192 of those signatures were not valid. Republican and Democratic candidates for president must submit 2,000 signatures to appear on the ballot.

But the objection to Mr. Kasich’s nominating petition was filed at 5:13 p.m. on the last day to challenge nominating petitions, and his attorney argues that makes it 13 minutes too late to be considered. The objector’s attorney disagrees, saying there is no requirement that filing be received by 5 p.m.

http://www.post-gazette.com/news/politics-state/2016/03/09/For-John-Kasich-a-battle-over-signatures-to-appear-on-Pa-primary-ballot/stories/201603090216

Captain Hate

Tarhole, the problem is that I (and probably we) wanted Marco to succeed when he shocked everybody by beating Cheeto Crist and the GOPe. But it's just been one bad move after another which makes me wonder what his core values have been all along. Opportunity squandered.

Momto2

MM it seems (as I Googled it) Gov. Kasich has been telling that Hobbit story since 2012. You would think by now he could remember the names Gandalf and Frodo - not garble the first and call Frodo "Mr. Hobbit".

Lou and Ed Rollins:

Lou: This man is running up impressive victories.

Rollins: Oh he had a big day yesterday. Winning in Mississippi, winning in Michigan, winning in Hawaii, and coming in second where he didn't win is extraordinary, and equally important what he is tapping into, astonishes me as a lifelong Republican, is yesterday 59% of the Republican voters were Anti- the republican Establishment of Washington. The new polls you have here, 63% of republican voters are against the The Republican Establishment in Washington. This guy has tapped right into that. The Republican Establishment of elites are doing everything they can to take him out and it's not even putting a dent in him. It's like shooting at him with a BB Gun and he's shooting back at them with a bazooka.

Lou:The Dems...what do you make of Michigan.

Rollins: The idea that the established candidate of the Democratic Party, not the Communist errr the Socialist (Lou laughs) the Established candidate gets beat by a Socialist in a Party that has the UAW, that has a large African American support, that Hillary Clinton loses that, is just astonishing to me. That's about as big an upset as I've ever seen oin Politics.

Frau Schattenregierung

Just some strange thoughts after lunch in a German restaurant*...

++Dem vote numbers are low because they don't have to show up in the primaries. No need for a show of numbers now. They--the living and the dead-- will come out for the final solution in November. What do they care if it's Hillary! or Bernie? Or even someone new and unexpected?

++ The Shadow Government doesn't care if Hillary! is removed for her crimes before the 2016 election. The Torricelli Gambit will
be executed bringing in a last minute, unvetted replacement to carry the torch for the party. A win-win for the Dems.

*(Dave inMA - I saw you playing with Umlauts at Insty's!)

Jeff Dobbs

Theo:
I am not aware of a coherent plan to stop him. No one will coordinate with anyone because everyone sees themselves as the eventual winner.

I'm less convinced that Rubio and Kasich believe they can win than I am that they think they need to stay in because the convention will be a train wreck and they want to be in the conversation, have pull, have others coming to them for favors (and maybe a really really really slight chance a contested convention they could be the third or fourth ballot winner) - and in Kasich's world, the possibility of being offered the VP slot if he stays in long enough.

What is also interesting to consider - the GOP's history of nominating the "next in line" guy. Didn't have one this time because Romney lost in 2012, and there was no clear "heir". Perhaps if Ryan had wanted to make a run, he could have grabbed that mantle, but the base wasn't in the mood for a "loser, sad!" candidate this time.

If one or the other of the guys left end up going toe to toe with Trump but he still gets the nomination...and then loses in the general, that guy might inherit the "next in line" label for 2020.

daddy

Rollins: ..I like Kasich, I've known him a long time, but his message...they don't want that. I think he's going to be shocked next eek even tho' he has sort of a slight edge. Rubio is going to get killed in Florida...My sense is this race is going to come down to Cruz and Trump, both outsiders.

Lou: ...Your reaction on JeB! meting tomorrow with...

Rollins:... It definitely has no impact.

NK

Rollins' summary is as clear as you can get about the state of the races.

Rubio: my only hope for a Rubio POTUS (he is definitely more electable in the general than Repub primaries) was that he would listen to the 'right' people. His campaign has showed he has poor judgment in that regard. Best that we learned that now about him; he is a show pony, not a conservative plow horse.

Rick Ballard

The disparity between Michigan pre-election polling and the actual results is best ascribed to an unrealistic sample projection. The Monmouth poll was closest to the actual result, although it was beyond the MoE. A comparison between its projected sample wrt age in comparison to exit poll data reveals a substantial underestimate wrt the percentage of younger voters in the population mix.

IOW - Comrade Sanders had a very effective GOTV effort in comparison to Clinton and the 81/19 split in the youngest cohort over Clinton in conjunction with the sample/reality mismatch accounts for the vast majority of the polling error.

Porchlight

Nate Silver pointed out the other day that under Dem rules, Trump would be easily denied the nomination.

Why? Because the Dems have superdelegates who can ignore the will of the voters in order to force the choice of the party elite?

I know it's hard for some to believe that their candidate is losing to this jerk (Kerry, 2004). But look, Trump is going to win FL, and if he wins OH too, it's pretty much over.

Winning a plurality is called winning. Not winning a plurality is called losing. Quit the whining already.

derwill

"The new polls you have here, 63% of republican voters are against the The Republican Establishment in Washington. This guy has tapped right into that. The Republican Establishment of elites are doing everything they can to take him out and it's not even putting a dent in him."

Here's a wild and crazy thought. Maybe the reason why the "Republican Establishment of elites" can't put a dent in him is because 63% of the voters are against the "Republican Establishment of elites."

Buckeye

Theo

The simple truth is that Trump is motivating more people to vote for him than the other guys are motivating to vote for them.

He was doing that when there were a lot more players, and he is doing it when there are only 4.

Will he be able to do that when and if it gets to just him and Cruz? Will it be too late?

Don't know, but the rules and schedule of the primaries are the handiwork of Romney and the other Top Men. If you want a goat, look there.

daddy

Part of Lou's oped commentary tonight

Lou: You'ld expect that the GOP establishment would be meting with The Donald to organize and synchronize party and campaign strategies to begin to prepare for calls for unity, and pivot to the General Election. But no. Instead Jeb! emerged, setting up meetings with Rubio today, Kasich and Cruz tomorrow, but no meeting sought with the republican frontrunner. And is Rubio is drained of money, spirit and support, the moneyed elites refuse to turn to the people's choice, and instead begin to embrace Cruz, who's running well behind Trump in the major contests of next Tuesday. The hapless Establishment seeks out another favorite as their choices fall one after another. What a record they have. The elites haven't done a thing right the last 2 Elections, and their off year success was authored by a movement which came fro the Tea party back in 2010.

Rove:... This FOX Poll is in conflict with an earlier poll that early voters already voted for Rubio...

Rove:... Lets step back and talk about last night. Last night he got 37% of the Vote...The Delegate count right now is 458 for Trump, but 598 not for Trump...so his problem remains, he's getting 34% of the vote, 4 Million, but everybody else has gotten 8 million...the divided field is giving him a plurality. The question is, the question is, when we get to these winner take all states, he wins 100% of the delegates if he only gets 34.9% of the vote like he's been averaging, so it's both a challenge for him and he's got to ultimately unite the party. 12 Million people have voted, 8 million of them didn't vote for him. And then at the same time, though he's got the plurality of the Delegates, because even when it's proportional, some of these thresholds and other rules have sort of made it drift his way, but he's still behind and does not have the majority of the Delegates.
