The local TV stations, not exactly rocket scientists, seem to have finally realized that the Indiana primary might matter this year.
They are prepping the field with their "Could you POSSIBLY vote for Donald Trump?" coverage, accompanied by wholesome anti-Trump Hoosiers and low rent, missing tooth Trump supporters.
I expect we will see hard-hitting specials on the history of the Klan in Indiana and its resurgence, how scared the local Mexicans are of Trump, why Trump's policies won't bring Carrier back, etc. etc.
After last Tuesday (before Alaska's delegates were split) , by my count 1227 celebrates had been apportioned. Of those,
Mr Trump 673 or 54.8%
Mr Cruz 411 or 33.5%
Mr Kasich 143 or 11.7%
In other words, going forward Mr Trump can somewhat under - perform from his past, while Mr Cruz must more than double his previous success. If I understand correctly, mailman's soon can't get to the number needed.
Now, I know past performance is no guarantee of future results, but it seems unlikely that Mr Cruz will suddenly more than double bus previous earnings.

Anderson: establishment types will try to coopt Trump but conservatives won't. Will pretends the GOP is a Conservative party.
If I understand correctly, mailman's soon can't get to the number needed.
Neglects the possibility of a contested convention. Looks unlikely at this point (Trump with an outright majority would seem to be the odds-on favorite), but . . .
Exactly.
Concur. It's beyond depressing. I think I'm going to skip right over the ledge . . .
George Will thinking Trump only appeals to whites is incompetent and clueless punditry. He is drawing significant support in the black community; all you have to do is look at his rally crowds. It's not a huge percentage, but enough to see that it's making dems nervous and would give him an opening in those communities come fall.
Yes, Trump will do much better with black voters than the usual GOPe T. Coddington Van Vorhees III types, including Romney. And Hillary will do much worse with blacks than Barry, of course, regardless of the opposition.
I love the "true conservatives" desire to reenact the Alamo. CH--your assessment of Kasich over the years has proven to be exactly on point--he's now adopted the core of the Dem platform.
I think that it is very unlikely that Trump would attract significant black votes. Blacks tend for various reasons to vote monolithically and are very unlikely to split their votes this time. Of course, Rodham is not going to draw blacks to the polls the same way that Obama did, as you say, but the best the Republican nominee -- Trump or T. Coddington III -- can hope for is low black turnout.
I also think based on some data and some anecdotes that Hispanics are RABIDLY anti-Trump. Not only will they vote for his opponent, whether Rodham or the devil incarnate (to the extent there is a difference) but they will storm the voting booths. This will not be the case if T. Codddington III is nominated.
What I said about the exit polls proved to be correct, so I am not sure the point of your post.
But, no, there is other data (and as I said, anecdotes) to suggest that Hispanic voters would not support Trump to put it mildly.
What part of "we're going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" do you think appeals to Hispanics? What part of "we're going to deport all of them" appeals to Hispanics in your estimation?
Now, if the guy in the hood was a real KKK guy then lefties cheer the righteous black man. If he was a leftie using the hood to imply Trump is a racist then they boo the pitiful Uncle Tom.
Those on the right, displaying an admirable moral consistency, cheer the trouncing of the hooded fool in either case and only regret they couldn't get a stomp or two in themselves.
Although I still root against Notre Dame, I do much less rabidly for their basketball team since that buffoon Digger Phelps departed. The game against Michigan was an aesthetically appealing contest between two competitive teams that I enjoyed a great deal. Likewise the Indiana Kentucky contest.
1. Trump has already pulled about 5% of blacks. That's not huge, but better than the 0 % of Romney.
2. I guess you are unaware that Hispanics are not monolithic. There is real rivalry amongst Mixicans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans. Mexicans are not particularly admiring of Cubans because they feel that they get preference on immigration.
3. Many blacks detest illegal immigration because the illegals take jobs that were formerly available to those in the black community.
What part of "we're going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" do you think appeals to Hispanics? What part of "we're going to deport all of them" appeals to Hispanics in your estimation?
All Americans who speak Spanish don't run around in Raiders jackets and bandanas, Theo.
Cecil T, sure second ballots, third ballots; I was only trying to examine the betting on the door. If I recall correctly, the math days that Mr Trump needs to win 53% of the remaining delegates,
Mr Cruz needs to win 78% of the remaining delegates, and
Mr Kasich needs shunting like 104% of the remaining - - clearly not going to happen.
2nd, 3rd rounds sure, who knows what will happen.
But, I think Mr Trump is in the cat bird seat right now.
Anyone listen to Ms Maria Bartaromo's show this morning? Excellent interviews, excellent guests. Someone named "Steve Miller" a senior advisor to Mr Trump. Very sharp man, knowledgeable of the nitty-gritty. Very impressive.
Also, Dr Carson. Solid.
Mr Michael Mulkasay on the SCOTUS nomination too.
I'll repeat what many here have been saying, Fox Business is the next news channel on TV right now.
~~~~
TM, thanks for the shout-out to Todd Beamer (intentional or not).
In 2012, Romney got 6% of the black vote (according to the exit polls, for the benefit if TK). I do not see that 5% is an improvement.
Romney got 27% of the Latino vote. The fact that Latinos have internal rivalries is not going to change the fact that Trump will get a smaller percentage than Romney and probably a MUCH smaller percentage.
Blacks are indeed in some ways antagonist to Latinos. But you are dreaming if you think blacks in large numbers are going to vote for Trump or any Republican.
The Sunday morning rhetoric about illegal immigrants is astounding. Now, instead of law breakers - they are *grandmothers* whose children and grandchildren are citizens and Trump wants to *rip them away from their families* when ALL THEY DID was SKIRT the immigration laws.
INCONCEIVABLE. "You keep using those words, I don't think they mean what you think they mean." (nod to our movie discussion)
Speaking of flea treatment - my foster dog was adopted this weekend - went to a wonderful family and has 2 little boys to love her which makes me very happy. My house does seem a bit quiet, though.
"Those on the right, displaying an admirable moral consistency, cheer the trouncing of the hooded fool in either case and only regret they couldn't get a stomp or two in themselves."
The protester who got punched wasn't wearing a KKK hood. His fellow protester was, but the admirable moral consistency of the right dictated that the American-flag-shirt wearing male rather than the KKK hooded female receive the beat down.
Interesting to note that the guys who say other people under no circumstances will vote for Trump are the same guys who seem unlikely to vote for Trump themselves.
OTOH people who support Trump note his wide class and racial appeal.
Somebodies' confirmation biases aint gonna be confirmed down the road.
The former group uses a lot of absolutes in their language which is curious considering we're talking about future, unknowable events, while the latter seem a lot less sure of the end game.
This could be because the first "epic disaster-exactly" group has more data on their side or because of better judgment or, possibly, because they have more bias to be confirmed.
All I know is people who say something is a foregone conclusion that is absolutely, positively going to happen overnight very often wake up with egg on their faces...except for daddy. [a little FedEx humor there]:)
Interesting take on the Senate’s SCOTUS strategy. Among other observations, this seems entirely plausible:
Republicans may delay Garland’s nomination through the election — to please their base — but then move to quickly confirm the judge before a new Democratic president takes office to avoid a more liberal nominee in 2017.
That would explain recent indications that Republican Senators' resistance to Garland might not be absolute.
2012 was the must win election. We're past that point.
Every new government program is another reason why people should not elect Republicans because they'll take it all away.
So much of the culture war has been ceded to the left that candidates like Romney can't get elected anymore.
If Trump had burned out early it would have been Jeb, or Kasich, or Roob. IOW another Romney.
The only chance Cruz ever had is to beat Trump fair and square after Trump takes out J, K and R. I'll take Cruz over Trump, but I'll take Trump over J K & R.
Very old poll (last September) and dubious at the time. Do you have anything more recent to suggest that for the first time in over 50 years a Republican could draw more than 10-15% of the black vote?
Blacks are virtually a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party. This is very unlikely to change. Latinos are not going to support Trump as much as they did Romney.
Trump's hope has to lie in a massive turnout of whites for him and/or low turnout among nonwhites.
Rafael Cruz would certainly draw more Latino votes.
jmh--I think that's the plan. There should be no hearing until after the election. If Hillary wins, she'll probably withdraw his name, If Trump wins, the committee will not report him out for a vote.
I have no data to answer my questions. I was asking you if the exit pollsters have analyzed one of the more amazing ballot box events of our lifetimes.
--The protester who got punched wasn't wearing a KKK hood.--
Do you have evidence this is the case? His head isn't visible in the video I saw until after he gets up from the stomping. His accomplice demonstrated considerable alacrity doffing hers once the stomping started.
I do thank you for confirming my tongue in cheek point though. It apparently would have been ok for a black guy to beat up someone with a hood but not someone without. Got it.
Or perhaps your point is that in a gender neutral society he should have been able to hit the girl instead.
Yes, I do not see how Garland gets confirmed after the election. It would be Obama, not Hillary, withdrawing his name in November if Hillary wins (in order to prevent the Republican Senate from confirming him). If Trump or Cruz (or some other Republican) he would not be confirmed and the new President would withdraw his name in January before any confirmation vote.
What about this "amazing ballot box event" makes you think that because a guy gets 37% of the Republican vote, he is going to win in November?
I think that Rodham is a weak candidate and will not draw blacks, Latinos or young people the way that Obama did. Even mainstream Democrats may be unenthusiastic about her.
But Trump is the worst of the alternatives to capitalize on her weakness. And the worst of the alternatives to actually have as president.
"If Trump had burned out early it would have been Jeb, or Kasich, or Roob. IOW another Romney. The only chance Cruz ever had is to beat Trump fair and square after Trump takes out J, K and R."
I think that's true. Even now, the party's resistance to putting their eggs in Cruz' basket only helps Trump rise.
Good Morning!
We used Trifexis for Scout,but he had a weird reaction. He would act zoned out and woozy.
We asked the vet if a normal reaction was for the dog to act high and she said no. She changed his meds and he doesn't react.
We found a sweet older British lady here in Florida to groom him.
Anderson: the attacks on Trump have really been stupid. Woodward: this is a rejection of politics as usual. Will: he appeals only to white voters. This coming from the ultimate old white guy. Lerer: donks are taking nothing for granted against a loose cannon like Trump especially with their own train wrecks. Woodward agrees. Anderson: establishment types will try to coopt Trump but conservatives won't. Will pretends the GOP is a Conservative party.
And that's a wrap.
If I understand correctly, mailman's soon can't get to the number needed.
Neglects the possibility of a contested convention. Looks unlikely at this point (Trump with an outright majority would seem to be the odds-on favorite), but . . .
Exactly.
Concur. It's beyond depressing. I think I'm going to skip right over the ledge . . .
Captain Hate,
George Will thinking Trump only appeals to whites is incompetent and clueless punditry. He is drawing significant support in the black community; all you have to do is look at his rally crowds. It's not a huge percentage, but enough to see that it's making dems nervous and would give him an opening in those communities come fall.
Posted by: Miss Marple 2 | March 20, 2016 at 11:02 AM
Yes, Trump will do much better with black voters than the usual GOPe T. Coddington Van Vorhees III types, including Romney. And Hillary will do much worse with blacks than Barry, of course, regardless of the opposition.
Posted by: jimmyk | March 20, 2016 at 11:08 AM
I'm with you,jimmyk.
I love the "true conservatives" desire to reenact the Alamo. CH--your assessment of Kasich over the years has proven to be exactly on point--he's now adopted the core of the Dem platform.
Posted by: clarice | March 20, 2016 at 11:11 AM
Why haven't the other Republicans been able to topple Trump using the alleged misogyny angle?
Posted by: Threadkiller | March 20, 2016 at 11:13 AM
Jimmyk --
I think that it is very unlikely that Trump would attract significant black votes. Blacks tend for various reasons to vote monolithically and are very unlikely to split their votes this time. Of course, Rodham is not going to draw blacks to the polls the same way that Obama did, as you say, but the best the Republican nominee -- Trump or T. Coddington III -- can hope for is low black turnout.
I also think based on some data and some anecdotes that Hispanics are RABIDLY anti-Trump. Not only will they vote for his opponent, whether Rodham or the devil incarnate (to the extent there is a difference) but they will storm the voting booths. This will not be the case if T. Codddington III is nominated.
Exit polls again?
Posted by: Threadkiller | March 20, 2016 at 11:17 AM
And, I should add, I think that a man named Rafael Cruz may draw more Hispanic votes than Willard did.
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 11:17 AM
Conservative leaning Hispanics vote for race not for policy.
Posted by: Threadkiller | March 20, 2016 at 11:19 AM
What crowd thinks Cruz can actually "abolish the IRS?"
Posted by: Threadkiller | March 20, 2016 at 11:20 AM
TK --
What I said about the exit polls proved to be correct, so I am not sure the point of your post.
But, no, there is other data (and as I said, anecdotes) to suggest that Hispanic voters would not support Trump to put it mildly.
What part of "we're going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" do you think appeals to Hispanics? What part of "we're going to deport all of them" appeals to Hispanics in your estimation?
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 11:20 AM
A conundrum for the left that demonstrates perfectly their moral bankruptcy compared to the right; Black Trump supporter stomps anti Trump protestor in KKK hood.
Now, if the guy in the hood was a real KKK guy then lefties cheer the righteous black man. If he was a leftie using the hood to imply Trump is a racist then they boo the pitiful Uncle Tom.
Those on the right, displaying an admirable moral consistency, cheer the trouncing of the hooded fool in either case and only regret they couldn't get a stomp or two in themselves.
Although I still root against Notre Dame, I do much less rabidly for their basketball team since that buffoon Digger Phelps departed. The game against Michigan was an aesthetically appealing contest between two competitive teams that I enjoyed a great deal. Likewise the Indiana Kentucky contest.
Theo:
1. Trump has already pulled about 5% of blacks. That's not huge, but better than the 0 % of Romney.
2. I guess you are unaware that Hispanics are not monolithic. There is real rivalry amongst Mixicans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans. Mexicans are not particularly admiring of Cubans because they feel that they get preference on immigration.
3. Many blacks detest illegal immigration because the illegals take jobs that were formerly available to those in the black community.
As near as I can tell, the exit poll is proved correct by the exit poll.
Unless there is actual data from the early ballots?
Cecil T, sure second ballots, third ballots; I was only trying to examine the betting on the door. If I recall correctly, the math days that Mr Trump needs to win 53% of the remaining delegates,
Mr Cruz needs to win 78% of the remaining delegates, and
Mr Kasich needs shunting like 104% of the remaining - - clearly not going to happen.
2nd, 3rd rounds sure, who knows what will happen.
But, I think Mr Trump is in the cat bird seat right now.
Anyone listen to Ms Maria Bartaromo's show this morning? Excellent interviews, excellent guests. Someone named "Steve Miller" a senior advisor to Mr Trump. Very sharp man, knowledgeable of the nitty-gritty. Very impressive.
Also, Dr Carson. Solid.
Mr Michael Mulkasay on the SCOTUS nomination too.
I'll repeat what many here have been saying, Fox Business is the next news channel on TV right now.
TM, thanks for the shout-out to Todd Beamer (intentional or not).
In 2012, Romney got 6% of the black vote (according to the exit polls, for the benefit if TK). I do not see that 5% is an improvement.
Romney got 27% of the Latino vote. The fact that Latinos have internal rivalries is not going to change the fact that Trump will get a smaller percentage than Romney and probably a MUCH smaller percentage.
Blacks are indeed in some ways antagonist to Latinos. But you are dreaming if you think blacks in large numbers are going to vote for Trump or any Republican.
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 11:35 AM
The Sunday morning rhetoric about illegal immigrants is astounding. Now, instead of law breakers - they are *grandmothers* whose children and grandchildren are citizens and Trump wants to *rip them away from their families* when ALL THEY DID was SKIRT the immigration laws.
INCONCEIVABLE. "You keep using those words, I don't think they mean what you think they mean." (nod to our movie discussion)
I think anyone who relys on exit polls is dreaming.
There is an amazing turnout this year in Republican primaries.
(1)How have the exit polls from the past played a roll in helping candidates pick a path to appeal to this group?
(2)What monolithic block has the current exit poll used to identify these new voters?
"Those on the right, displaying an admirable moral consistency, cheer the trouncing of the hooded fool in either case and only regret they couldn't get a stomp or two in themselves."
The protester who got punched wasn't wearing a KKK hood. His fellow protester was, but the admirable moral consistency of the right dictated that the American-flag-shirt wearing male rather than the KKK hooded female receive the beat down.
Interesting to note that the guys who say other people under no circumstances will vote for Trump are the same guys who seem unlikely to vote for Trump themselves.
OTOH people who support Trump note his wide class and racial appeal.
Somebodies' confirmation biases aint gonna be confirmed down the road.
The former group uses a lot of absolutes in their language which is curious considering we're talking about future, unknowable events, while the latter seem a lot less sure of the end game.
This could be because the first "epic disaster-exactly" group has more data on their side or because of better judgment or, possibly, because they have more bias to be confirmed.
All I know is people who say something is a foregone conclusion that is absolutely, positively going to happen overnight very often wake up with egg on their faces...except for daddy. [a little FedEx humor there]:)
Interesting take on the Senate’s SCOTUS strategy. Among other observations, this seems entirely plausible:
That would explain recent indications that Republican Senators' resistance to Garland might not be absolute.Posted by: JM Hanes | March 20, 2016 at 11:47 AM
2012 was the must win election. We're past that point.
Every new government program is another reason why people should not elect Republicans because they'll take it all away.
So much of the culture war has been ceded to the left that candidates like Romney can't get elected anymore.
If Trump had burned out early it would have been Jeb, or Kasich, or Roob. IOW another Romney.
The only chance Cruz ever had is to beat Trump fair and square after Trump takes out J, K and R. I'll take Cruz over Trump, but I'll take Trump over J K & R.
The culture ceding GOP already lost twice.
2012 was the must win election.
What is your point?
Are you suggesting that DJT will cause people to vote for him that have not traditionally voted at all? What is your data for this?
The fact remains that he has gotten 37% of the vote in the Republican primaries.
TK rarely makes a coherent point.
Very old poll (last September) and dubious at the time. Do you have anything more recent to suggest that for the first time in over 50 years a Republican could draw more than 10-15% of the black vote?
Blacks are virtually a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party. This is very unlikely to change. Latinos are not going to support Trump as much as they did Romney.
Trump's hope has to lie in a massive turnout of whites for him and/or low turnout among nonwhites.
Rafael Cruz would certainly draw more Latino votes.
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 11:54 AM
jmh--I think that's the plan. There should be no hearing until after the election. If Hillary wins, she'll probably withdraw his name, If Trump wins, the committee will not report him out for a vote.
Posted by: clarice | March 20, 2016 at 11:55 AM
I have no data to answer my questions. I was asking you if the exit pollsters have analyzed one of the more amazing ballot box events of our lifetimes.
--The protester who got punched wasn't wearing a KKK hood.--
Do you have evidence this is the case? His head isn't visible in the video I saw until after he gets up from the stomping. His accomplice demonstrated considerable alacrity doffing hers once the stomping started.
I do thank you for confirming my tongue in cheek point though. It apparently would have been ok for a black guy to beat up someone with a hood but not someone without. Got it.
Or perhaps your point is that in a gender neutral society he should have been able to hit the girl instead.
Posted by: Destiny Ignatz | March 20, 2016 at 11:58 AM
Yes, I do not see how Garland gets confirmed after the election. It would be Obama, not Hillary, withdrawing his name in November if Hillary wins (in order to prevent the Republican Senate from confirming him). If Trump or Cruz (or some other Republican) he would not be confirmed and the new President would withdraw his name in January before any confirmation vote.
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 11:58 AM
In the video flag shirt guy is leading the protest including KKK hoody dude with a large cartoon Trump poster held high.
Black guy rips the poster out of flag-shirt's hands and knocks him down.
TK --
What about this "amazing ballot box event" makes you think that because a guy gets 37% of the Republican vote, he is going to win in November?
I think that Rodham is a weak candidate and will not draw blacks, Latinos or young people the way that Obama did. Even mainstream Democrats may be unenthusiastic about her.
But Trump is the worst of the alternatives to capitalize on her weakness. And the worst of the alternatives to actually have as president.
Posted by: Theo | March 20, 2016 at 12:05 PM
boris:
"If Trump had burned out early it would have been Jeb, or Kasich, or Roob. IOW another Romney. The only chance Cruz ever had is to beat Trump fair and square after Trump takes out J, K and R."
I think that's true. Even now, the party's resistance to putting their eggs in Cruz' basket only helps Trump rise.
