Buckeye Jr. is finishing his residency and trying to make decision between a fellowship or pursuing a PhD as next thing he does.
The guy who runs lab he has been involved with (Comprehensive Cancer Center) and a mentor has been encouraging him to consider this and potentially be his successor.

I don't think I am in a position to offer any meaningful advice.
Buckeye, my brother did the PhD step after med school, he does oncology esp prostate cancer... Cancer Research is getting very interesting these days, and seeing patients is a big plus for him.
Generally it depends on whether he wants to do research or see patients. As henry mentions, they are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but often they can be. And if research, what sort of research he wants to do is important.
An MD degree does not really train one to be a scientist, and most straight MDs are pretty terrible scientists. If he's interested in therapeutics, a PhD really is necessary. Clinical trials are sort of on the border -- that is more methodology and statistics than straight science.
I'd be happy to talk with him off JOM. I'm on the list, or Jeff can give you my contact information.
henry, I have to talk with your brother one of these days. I'm looking for a research oncologist, and the local "research" hospital has had a difficult time making the transition from a traditional "see patients" model to supporting research participation. Seeing patients still pays the organization better.
Dr J, I suspect you and my brother would get along well. I would have trouble keeping up, he does help the NIH evaluate grant proposals at times among other things...
I think there is a real need for a shop class in the techie stuff
I completely agree. I heartily approve of shop and all vocational education, which we've sadly mostly destroyed.
Unfortunately at least at my institution, playing with Arduinos is becoming a replacement for real learning. Not in the hard sciences, of course, where Texas still competes and can't get away with faking it, though I'm sure they would if they could. But the "commonmakerspace" (it even sounds commie) I was describing is being sponsored by, ta da, the College of Liberal Arts. That should tell you all you need to know.
It's possible that Rubio could get shut out in the first three states. That's happened to him all to often (he could get some congressional district votes while not qualifying for statewide delegates).
I did not know this. There is NO early voting in MI or MS. One can absentee vote - with a legit excuse (not absentee vote for any reason, like you can here in NC).
In several states, Trump built a big lead in early voting and then Cruz or Rubio closed the gap in primary day voting. Louisiana is the most recent and dramatic example, where the nets called the race immediately after polls closed based on Trump's lead in the early vote - but by the time the night was over, Cruz pulled to within ~3 points.
But no early voting seems like it might be at least in part a counter to the fact that these are open primaries.

Kasich will fall back closer to Cruz. Oakland County is reporting early, which is Kasich's bestest county by far. He's a point behind Trump in that county so far. Western counties are Cruz's best and some polls there don't close until 9.
Trump was almost certain to win Mississippi. Question for the night is by what margin. As Jeff says a big win helps with the narrative. But Michigan is the bigger story of the night.
Theo, you cannot assume that a vote for Cruz or Rubio, etc was anti-Trump. I voted for Cruz in Idaho today, but it was a vote FOR Cruz. If Cruz had not been in the picture and my choices were Trump, Rubio, or Kasich, I would have voted for Trump.
Yes, the show was today. Candidates for each of the three regents positions were “unopposed” because a floor fight would not have changed voting blocks and therefore they were elected without legislators having to, you know, actually vote for the best candidates.
News reports have legislators praising the “quality”, diversity and experience of the candidates.
Oh. I didn’t win.
I have heard back-channel that some in government thought I would have been an excellent choice.
Other excellent candidates in the judicial district were available, but, ahem, were not widely supported. It makes one wonder whether schooling is a priority, a political inconvenience, or a political opportunity.
I don’t feel badly about losing. I feel badly for a process that does not value education. I feel badly for those who do not care about the process.
As we know, Drudge tends to overstate eventual Trump vote. But if those numbers are the final numbers, still good for Kasich. Obviously 34% would have been better. A win for JK would be a yuuuuuuuge upset.
A long time ago I lived in Washtenaw County in Michigan. I do not believe that they had any Republicans then and I would be surprised if there were many now.

I will crawl over broken glass to view for whomever eventually becomes the Republican nominee in the general.
I think it is those who say that they are Republicans, who say that they will never vote for Mr Trump should he be the nominee, who are throwing the temper tantrum.

jimmyk, there were 18 candidates for our regional seat. One voting block of regional legislators had a preferred local candidate. Legislators from other regions defer to the politicians within a region.
Four hours of interviews online, which I don’t advise viewing, make it clear that some candidates were better than others.
Also, with educators composing 70 percent of the current board, one would have thought that some variety would have been valued. No.
The regents talk past issues. Good questions remain unasked. The educational bureaucracy does not have to defend its positions. Look for several more expensive years wasting children.
Eventually, a parallel Khan Academy educational system will develop as people realize passing time in class is official but a waste of good students, administrators, and teachers.

Decision Desk suggesting that Cruz will pass Kasich for 2nd place in Michigan. Rubio disappears off the radar screen.

An American student from Vanderbilt was murdered by a Pali in Israel today during a stabbing spree, in honor of SloJoe's visit.

I thought Michigan and Mississippi both closed at the same time?
Posted by: Threadkiller | March 08, 2016 at 09:02 PM
michigan's in a different time zone, no?
Posted by: narciso | March 08, 2016 at 09:04 PM
I'm reading that MI polls close at 9 eastern. Six minutes ago.
Posted by: Porchlight | March 08, 2016 at 09:06 PM
I dunno. Its a little further east on the map.

Most of Michigan is Eastern - the western most counties are Central

Michigan is eastern time zone.

apparently not, they are in the same timezone,
trump banked his vote early, the late deciders probably went to kasich, but not by a large enough margin,

Screwy, I know. I read a statement of Mr Trump's boarding - school roommate. Being the product of a similar educational experience, what his roommate said resonated with me. Perhaps some here saw, or even posted a link ?
I will crawl over broken glass to view for whomever eventually becomes the Republican nominee in the general.
I think it is those who say that they are Republicans, who say that they will never vote for Mr Trump should he be the nominee, who are throwing the temper tantrum.
YMMV.

Detroit is a different time zone than the Upper Peninsula.
The American student was an army vet with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, apparently a West Pointer that was getting an MBA at Vanderbuilt. (Twitter info, so not certain).

I love the YOO PEE. I fish there quite a bit.
Iron River MI.
Sandy, I have NEVER called myself a Republican, I am as Conservative as anyone here, and I'm not going to give my SOUL to the (REDACTED FOR LENT) who are peeing their pants in fear of losing control of the GOP and all the CA$HI$H and perks.
Never Trump??? If TRUMP loses, THE GOPeePee, wins. Bidness as usual.
Unless Cruz wins. They hate Cruz too.

jimmyk, there were 18 candidates for our regional seat.

They should never report before polls close. Florida 2000 - still makes me furious.

I live southern central Michigan, zip 49242.
Polling locations here closed at 2000/8pm.
