What ever happened to private sector bathrooms... oh right, we didn't build those.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--So Trump's suggestion to leave it to the state and local governments answers nothing about the issue.--

Since he's running for Chief Executive of the Federal Government why should he be expected to answer a question that should not be in his jurisdiction?
Would that everyone would provide the same answer.

Oh but wait, I forgot there is nothing that is not a Federal civil right anymore, including entering the country illegally and being a terrorist.

The only things not actual Federal civil rights are the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th amendments.

Update from Maine GOP convention: Gov. Lepage will be a delegate to the national convention, despite opposition from Cruz supporters. LePage said that Cruz's northeast political director reneged on the unity slate, he "stabbed us in the back." The remainder of the delegates will be elected this afternoon.
Big surprise,Susan Collins told reporters after her speech that she will stay neutral until the national convention. There is no doubt that the GOPe is praying for a contested convention.

I don't like to disagree with our host, but I think he's completely wrong, as is the Hot Air piece he links. It's not about bathrooms. It's about normalizing this transgender madness and making it something taught in schools as early as kindergarten. Even private religious schools. It's about undermining families and traditional valies.

It is poison.

It's termites in the foundation of the house.

The damage will be invisible for a while but ever growing and by the time even the most blasé among us can no longer ignore the harm done, it will be far too late.

This issue is a damn good hill to die on, from where I sit.

Buckeye

There is no doubt that the GOPe is praying for a contested convention.

I challenge Theo to take his lawn chair to the Convention. Find a good spot outside the entrance/exits.

When we get to the second or third round, when we are about to get a tomato can shoved down our throats, Theo gets to wave a sign with said tomato can's name on it.

After that experience Theo, come back and report about our democratic process.

That is my understanding as well, Marlene.

LePage's daughters were born on foreign soil to a US Citizen parent and a non-US Citzen parent and they aquired their citizenship through a naturalization process. He told Howie Carr that he researched this subject and that Cruz is not eligible.

Cruz should sit down with LePage and show him the settled law and remove this burden LaPage has lived with since his kids were born. That is what a man of good conscience would do.

OT

In my business a lot of the young guys I came in with are now the crusty old dogs like me on the way out. Last week I bumped into the guy from Philly and I mentioned the story of the home made hand grenade and his dad the cop catching him. He had a ton of other funny and serious things he related and I had urged him to tell them for the benefit of me and for the new guys coming on board and they loved it.

3 nights back in Hong Kong met another great old friend just about to retire---Chesapeake Bay type, couple sailboats, ex-Navy, known him and played hard with him since 1980. The story I got him to tell for the benefit of the newbies sitting around, was that his roommate in Flight Training in 1980 was body surfing in San Diego, and by one of those awful 1 in a million accidents, landed on his head like DrK, and was paralyzed from just below the elbows all the way down.

My buddy hung with him for the weeks in the Naval Hospital when he was unbearable and even the nurses couldn't stand dealing with him, until amazingly he accepted the hand he was dealt and began living again.

My buddy has stayed very close with his friend for 35 years now, helped him get a car he has since driven up and back to Alaska twice, has had him out Halibut fishing on his boat, and other stuff I won't go into, but what a story to hear. Davy finished by saying something like that when he used to get peeved by little things like having to park way away from a stores entrance due to all the close parking spaces being taken, he realized that his buddy would give everything in the world for the luxury of being able to walk long distance across a parking lot, so he no longer sweats the small stuff, and that lesson has been one my friend has taken to heart forever after.

The next day my newbie co-worker, currently hassling with a divorce, remarked to me that when that statement was made it told him everything about the character of my buddy and really had an effect on him.

Just meeting old friends on the road and getting them to share tales and wisdom and laughs was the highlight of this trip. Sort of like JOM:)

Off to Best Buy.

I'm assuming you weren't hinting at Ginormous Research aka Battelle? We invented a lot of the stuff that brought the nukular industry into the modern era, as well as stuff like yur Alaska Pipeline.

I was only tangently involved, but buddies in the same department did a ton of materials and welding research in those areas.

You are one of the best parts of JOM and I always learn something from your stories.

Jack is Back! (As An Officially Declared Islamaphobe)

Man Tran,

If you are an NDT tech in the nuclear power plant niche wouldn't you run across Bechtel more than Battelle? No one has built as many commercial nukes than Bechtel even Fluor/Daniel.

And it depends on the type of weld and system classification as to the NDT method. Made a ton of money for Xray Engineering and US Testing. I think Penniman and Browne edged into NDT at one time.

Nothing would crater a schedule than having to cut out a critical deep J-bevel Chrome-Moly weld and redo it. Just the reheat can take days.

(Sorry for the snark; a fantastic pic. Thanks for sharing it.)

Buckeye

ManTran/JiB/daddy

Don't think there was any Battelle guys involved either. This was a pretty straightforward project;) 13 articulated motions, dc motor drives with quadrature encoders for position feedback, and a one-off interface to a Krautkramer box that interfaced to the ultrasonic transducer.

I worked on the interface, we probed that beast with o'scopes for days. Good think Dr. Copeland and Azbell were there, I was way beyond my chops for sure.

Can't remember who actually built the robot mechanics, but it was a piece of art. Even had a custom suit that fit over all the parts. They told me that if it got to much exposure they would give it a bath;)

ManTran, it was Mike that ran it at the reactor sites.

lyle

OT, Driscoll at Insty posts about elderly rocker, Joe Walsh, who is spewing BS about Republicans and has cancelled a concert for some vets because of the aforementioned icky Rs but ED also links to one of his own posts at PJM from last year about what led to the Eagles breaking up in '80. Buckeye

Jack is Back! (As An Officially Declared Islamaphobe)

I mean't to add that I don't think Zetec did Xray ndt which is required on nuclear class one. They are mostly eddy current and ultrasound, IIRC. But lots of piping non-Class 1 on a nuke goes eddy current and ultra-sound. In fact, 90% of it when you count the footage.

Even the supports where you have class one over class two systems.

Buckeye

JiB

We also built a system to collect data from some kind of sensor that got pushed down the steam tubes to measure concentricity as I recall.

Does that sound right?

Man Tran

Battelle mostly invented/developed materials/processes, but they certainly were dragged into a lot of production environments. The main issue I recall was the choking down of coolant tubes where they passed through spacer plates. There was a lot of effort in development of inspection probes to detect wall thickness and anular reduction. As I recall, that was one of the worst problems in production operations. (I'm talking mid-70s.)

Jack is Back! (As An Officially Declared Islamaphobe)

Buckeye,

Oh Yeah. We ended up being number one in replacing steam generators on the PWR's including Captain Hate's favorite plant at Davis-Besse. I don't think any PWR ever survived without having the SG's replaced. The planning takes a full year. Sat on a project review team once and they had the schedule down to the hours. No room for error. Everyhting is pre-placed to save on the dosage rates.

FWIW, Cruz got all 14 Maine at large delegates.

He needs to win more states though.

Marlene

Update on delegates at Maine GOP convention: Cruz supporters gained 19 of 23 delegates. The Cruz campaign used majority support to install the 19 delegates, and some will switch to Cruz on second ballot at the national convention. The Cruz campaign was well organized and many of his supporters, the grass roots conservatives in Maine, expressed disappointment that LePage endorsed Trump. The Cruz campaign denied they agreed to a unity ticket that would have given 12 delegates to Cruz,9 to Trump and 2 to Kasich.
If there is competition for the small number of delegates in Maine, the larger states will be interesting!
