You struck on something, McCain, Romney, Ryan always looked and acted guilty. That was their starting point. Trump not so much:)

Even to engage with some of the leftist nutcases validates their position.
Cruz got praise for stopping & explaining a point with some Code Pink nuts at a small Stop Iran rally I went to. I couldn't stand that. He broke off speaking to supporters to answer grievances from a disruptive mob. That doesn't seem right.

The left has Alinskyed “conservative” to mean reactionary when it really follows proven processes of science  “to mine experience for what works and discard what doesn’t.”

Leftist and progressive political romantics dream up narratives to support unworkable fantasies.

from a guardian profile, after his nobel prize,

In 1990, Vargas Llosa sought to express his political commitment in something other than fiction. He ran for the Peruvian presidency with the centre-right Frente Democrático coalition, advocating neoliberal reforms, or that dismal neologism "Andean Thatcherism". He lost the election to Alberto Fujimori, a Peruvian of Japanese descent who capitalised on fears among the poor of Vargas Llosa's proposed austerity measures. The novelist's opponents used to read out the more sexually candid passages of his novels to shock potential voters into opposing him. But whence the Thatcherite drift of a man who had been an enthusiast for Fidel Castro in his youth? Salman Rushdie detected it as early as 1984 in the novel The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta (1984), deeming the book Vargas Llosa's "first overtly right-wing tract", but in truth he had drifted rightwards long before then: in 1971 he broke with his earlier enthusiasm for the Cuban revolution and mocked García Márquez as "Castro's courtesan".

I receive a Garner's Usage Tip of the Day (Smarter Words) -- my lawyer son recommended it years ago for tenses, definitions, etc. Anyway, the quote for today made me wonder, what would Richard Grant White think of our language usage today:
“Language is made for man, and not man for language; but yet no man, no number of men, however great, can of purpose change the meaning of one monosyllable. For, unless the meaning of words is fixed during a generation, language will fail to impart ideas, and even to communicate facts.”
—Richard Grant White, Words and Their Uses 15 (1870)

And, as far as that Yuri Kochiyama and her hate after losing her father, internment, etc. -- the Japanese murdered/slaughtered lots of dads at Pearl Harbor, they interned Americans and Brits when they invaded Manchuria and starved and humiliated their prisoners everywhere. To hell with her grievances and every other minority who can't let go of the past and pisses and moans instead of building a good life for themselves and their 'people.'

RattlerGator --

No need to apologize (at least not to ME) for the length of your post. Pithy and brevity are nice (at least so I have heard) but some ideas require some serious explication.

I do not entirely agree with all that you wrote, but I think it was thoughtful, intelligent and constructive.

I do generally agree that Obama probably got more benefit from being black than he lost votes because of it. White guilt is real but there was a lot more to the Obama phenomenon than his race (and I don't think that you suggested otherwise).

I was struck by this sentence -- "We desperately need a Democrat Party that is not warped by identity politics..." That is absolutely true and, sadly, at this moment in time, virtually inconceivable. A small group of elite Democrats push an ideology that the rank and file Democratic voters are only vaguely aware of much less in line with, but they get votes to fuel their power by naked and unrelenting appeals to the check the box identity groups -- blacks, Hispanics, Asians, women, gays, youth, etc.

Without such identity politics the modern Democratic party would be a powerless husk of its present incarnation.

Great point by Rush in Hour !.

Reads from the Charlotte Observer about girls having to "get over" their problem with a man walking into their bathroom and dropping his trou. Rush says, for the last 7 years women have been told by the MSM and everyone on the Left that they have a 20 to 80 percent chance of being raped on any College Campus in America, so be very, very afraid.

Now they are being told to "get over some naked man being in their bathrooms."

Nice contrast. Really brings the Left's insanity home, and also Rush explains that this is all just the Left breaking down the Cultural norms we live by that the Left wants to destroy.

The little twinkette at the Washington Post was careful to note that FDR ultimately sent this Southern California born Japanese American to an internment camp in Arkansas in the "Jim Crow South".

Frankly my dear, I don't think those snaggle toothed, chicken choking, sister poking, corncob smoking unredeemed Confederates in Arkansas in 1943 gave a damn about a bunch of "dirty Japs" plunked down in some Arkansas rice field. I do generally agree that Obama probably got more benefit from being black than he lost votes because of it. White guilt is real but there was a lot more to the Obama phenomenon than his race (and I don't think that you suggested otherwise).

No, I don't think there is very much more to it than his race. If Obama were white, he would not have gotten into Columbia for graduate school, or Harvard for law school.

Assuming he had the same beliefs, same (lack of) work ethic in high school, college and graduate school, he would likely have ended up an untenured poli sci teacher at a state college. And I think that's a best-case scenario.

If a white stoner from Hawaii who'd been raised by a Communist single mom somehow did manage to get get himself to Harvard Law School, he would certainly not have ended up with a teaching post at a prestigious law school after graduation, nor would he have been of any interest to the Chicago political machine, nor would he have any connections to get him his first elected office.

If he somehow did manage to make it to the Illinois legislature, there is no way on this Earth he would have been run against a popular Congressman for the Senate in 2002, and he would not have had the political team around him who uncovered sealed divorce records to wreck Jim Ryan's campaign and win the seat.

If he did somehow manage to make it into the Senate in 2002, there is no chance in all the universe that a junior senator from the Chicago machine with no record to speak of, and nothing else to distinguish himself, would have been given a prime speaking spot at the 2004 convention, which is what put him in the national spotlight.

If he did somehow manage to win that speaking spot, as yet another young white leftist hipster, his speech would have been just more of the same in a convention full of such speakers, and that would have been that for his window to bigger things.

If he somehow got attention for his 2004 speech and tried to parlay that into a 2008 Presidential run, his message of being a blank slate promising each listener his or her own ideal of "hope and change" would have gone exactly nowhere, and Hillary Clinton would have been the democratic nominee and almost certainly would have won the Presidency against John McCain. He would have won reelection to the Senate in 2008, but then likely lost his seat in 2014, and we would never, ever hear his name again.

Remember it's only racism if you're a white non-democrat:

The problem in 2008 was the racial tinge to [Mrs.] Clinton’s last-ditch defense: that Obama was a doomed candidate because of his alleged inability to win over white voters. On May 8, she argued that “I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” and cited an article whose findings she summarized thus: “Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.” The contrast between Obama’s base of black voters with the “hard-working” white Americans supporting Clinton, made on the eve of a primary in West Virginia, carried clear racial overtones. . . .

[Mrs.] Clinton’s rhetorical strategy of insinuating that Obama was too black to be president was echoed by her campaign. . . . Perhaps the most disturbing comment . . . came from Hillary Clinton herself, who in late May 2008 justified staying in the race by saying, “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.” This came after months of worry that Obama, as the first black candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, would be a target for assassination. Two weeks later, on June 7, she finally suspended her campaign.

I lifted this quote from here:

Also re: the idea of a white Obama...

Forget all the alt-history I posted. Just picture a 45 year old white hipster whose resume was:

A couple of terms working on the boards of nonprofits where a few million dollars were squandered to no purpose.

Ten minutes or so in the Illinois legislature with no accomplishments to speak of.

Half a term as a junior senator with no bills to his name.

Two autobiographies despite not actually doing anything of note or overcoming any life obstacles.

I don't see how anyone could seriously think he would have lasted past New Hampshire in the 2008 primaries if he were white.

He would have had no special "authority" to talk about race, so that would be out as far as an appeal.

He would not have been a "first" anything.

He wouldn't have stood out for his youth with Edwards in the race. He wouldn't have been remarkable for his anti-war stance with Edwards and Kucinich in the race. Nobody would have cared how "eloquent" he supposedly was.

What exactly would have made him appealing either to the Democrats or to the nation at large, were he not black?

glasater

Lyle,

I've never heard of Minidoka ID but that's what History Link sez..

Beginning on August 10, 1942, most Seattleites were sent to the "Minidoka Relocation Center" near Hunt, Idaho, about 15 miles from Twin Falls and 150 miles southeast of Boise. This was one of 10 inland concentration camps filled with Japanese who had been evacuated from the West Coast.

I used to play golf years ago with one of the local caucasian 'glamour' gals from WWII who married a Japanese fellow, darling man, who fought in Europe during the War.

Again. As much as I will disagree with anyone here, I've never once implied anything even slightly disparaging about their spouse or family or their marital status. Including you. So kindly GFY.

Momto2..

I truly believe "Beautiful Joe" should be required reading by every junior high kid in the country. I'm positive it would reduce animal abuse by a ton in this country.

MaryD - thank you. All I do is feed them, vet them, and love them. The hard part is saying goodbye but even that is easier knowing they are going to great homes.

Secret Service shot somebody near the White House. But don't worry, Zippy's safe.

It's Friday, so ... he's golfing at Andrews!

Thanks to whomever linked to Surber, re: George Will. I read bowtie on occasion, but missed quite a few of his anti-Trump screeds. Will was perfectly and spectacularly wrong about Trump, and Surber correctly paints Georgie as a little man who hasn't grown an inch this election cycle. The comments to the article are almost JOM-worthy.

glasater - A wonderful book! It is one of the most disturbing things to see a child or young person who abuses an animal. It usually leads to other criminal behavior.
