Padres Apologize to Gay Men’s Chorus for Error in National Anthem Recording
The 100 men, in black dress shirts and pants, formed two rows in center field at Petco Park in San Diego before the Padres played the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.
The men, members of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, had been invited by the Padres to sing the national anthem. In keeping with the team’s request, the chorus would not sing live but would perform to an amplified rendition it had recorded.
The group waited for its cue, and after a prolonged pause, a recording began — of a young woman singing, said Bob Lehman, the executive director of the chorus.
Before a near-capacity crowd announced at more than 40,000, the men awkwardly waited for the song to finish. There was no announcement or attempt to stop the recording, Mr. Lehman said. The men were then ushered off the field as fans taunted them with phrases like “You sing like a girl” and “You never sounded better,” Mr. Lehman said.
“They just kind of let us stand there,” he said, describing the moment as surreal and devastating.
The Padres tried to figure out what went wrong and clearly, if this had been someone's idea of a deliberate prank it would have been a job-ender. However:
In a statement on Sunday night, the team said that it had found no evidence of malicious intent and that what happened was an “unintentional mistake.”
As a result, the team said it had ended its relationship with a contractor and disciplined an employee who was responsible for the game production on Saturday. The Padres accepted full responsibility and expressed deep regret, the statement said.
Mr. Lehman said he had spoken with Mike Dee, the team’s chief executive, whom he described as sincerely apologetic. Mr. Lehman said he had been told that the regular technician was in a car crash the night before and that a substitute was in the control room.
“Somebody didn’t know how to press the stop button?” he asked. “I couldn’t believe a professional organization like that didn’t know what to do.”
It's not a professional organization, it's the Padres.
MORE: Ambivalent coverage here - some laughed it off, some not:
Instead of their voices over the PA system, fans of the Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers heard a recorded voice of a woman singing the anthem. When the group stepped off the field at the end of the song it was to taunts such as, "You sing like a girl," according to a statement on the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus Facebook page, but also to clapping and apparently good-natured comments from fans, according to a video from one attendee.
On that video, one fan jokes, "It was all in unison, it was perfect, one voice, it was amazing."
One of the singers replies on video, "We're so insulted," but it was hard to tell by his tone if he was joking or seriously upset. The man whose brother took the video wrote on Twitter, "There was maybe 1 guy who was upset. Most understood it was an honest mistake."
OTOH:
The Padres apologized on Twitter during Saturday's game, but the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus called Sunday for Major League Baseball to investigate the incident to see if someone in the Padres control booth "intentionally engaged in anti-gay discrimination or a hate crime" and for the City Attorney's Office to determine if anyone "engaged in activity in violation of the San Diego Human Rights Ordinance or engaged in any deliberate hate crimes based on sexual orientation."
As to what may have gone wrong:
Union-Tribune sportswriter Kirk Kenney reported that a taped version of the anthem "was to be played with the performers on the field" Saturday and that the woman's voice was believed to be that of Friday's anthem singer.

I can understand why the Padres have gone to a taped version of the National Anthem with lip syncing from the "performers" on the field.
A few years back somebody in the Padre organization invited Rosie O'Donnell --the fat talentless bag of goo who has persuaded some folks that she might be a comedienne-- to sing the National Anthem at the start of a Padre game. Midway through the song, Rosie forgot the lyrics (that is if she ever knew them). Faced with music, but no words, Rosie simply grabbed her crotch. I dunno, maybe she thought she would find some cue cards in there.
Anyway, the Pads subsequently went to pre recorded versions of the Anthem. No more crotch grabbing by singers on the field (otoh, the Padre players are still known to occasionally adjust their jockstraps on the field).

Maryrose,
From this story, Take Me Out to the Ball Game I learn that that the song was written by some guy in 1907 or 1908, Frank Norworth, and that he wrote 2,500 songs in his career, including "Shine On Harvest Moon."

Who knew?

David Jenkins, president of something called “Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship”
Regarding Robert Bryce’s “An Ill Wind: Open Season on Bald Eagles” (op-ed, May 16): Wind power is one of the best ways to protect eagles and other birds because it combats their biggest threat—climate change.
True,
But if we used DDT to kill Zika and it destroyed Eagles egg before the chicks hatched, then they would never have to grow up and suffer from Climate Change, so just imagine the total amount of Eagle suffering we would have prevented by using DDT---its an astronomical number!
If there's no flaw in his logic, there's no flaw in mine.

FWIW, the last I heard about Roseanne Barr was that she ran for President in 2012 with her running mate, the "ultimate" moral authority on the war in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan.
Sheehan was something else herself. The left wing media loved her when she was complaining about Bush and the war. Then she ran against Nancy Pelosi for her House seat. Suddenly the media had nothing to say about her.
As someone said, when useful idiots are no longer useful, they are just....well, you know.

One thing I'd take exception to is that the author falls into the trap of using the left's language, which is in itself ceding part of the battle.
Why grant them any legitimacy by using terms like "cis" or "gender fluid" etc. Letting them rewrite the dictionary is a huge mistake.

Since I listen to a lot of Talk Radio, the station that has Glenn Beck lately has been running an ad clip of his where he emotes desperately, saying something like "Everything I have been saying behind this microphone for the last 10 years is coming true before our eyes and God is moving to save the Republic and..."
Not to diminish religious individuals and their belief that God acts within history, but Beck strikes me as more and more totally nuts. I can't even stand listening to his ads anymore, much less his show.
Does anyone know what his audience numbers are? I have to imagine they are below "in the toilet."

Harry Reid says "not only no, but hell no" to Liz Brown as VP
"Do you think it's wise to even consider pulling somebody like a Sherrod Brown (D-OH) or a Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) out of the United States Senate at a time when Democrats are trying to win the body back," MSNBC's Joy Ann Reid, no known relation, asked the senator.
"If we have a Republican governor in any of the states the answer is not only no, but hell no," Reid replied. "I would do whatever I can and I think most of my Democratic colleagues here would say the same thing."

The reason I bring this up is that we used to go the Brompton Oratory in Knnightsbridge for Sunday Mass. They had a terrific choir. No one has ever sung the Credo like them since I left London.
None of the choir was Catholic. Hired. Paid. But forever on all their CD's that sell out to all the tourists, they are a Catholic choir at Brompton Oratory.

Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department's public integrity unit, U.S. officials briefed on the probe say.
The investigation dates to at least last year and has focused, at least in part, on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law, the officials said.
McAuliffe wasn't notified by investigators that he is a target of the probe, according to the officials.
"The Governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it," said Marc Elias, attorney for McAuliffe campaign, in a statement to CNN.
As part of the probe, the officials said, investigators have scrutinized McAuliffe's time as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, a vehicle of the charitable foundation set up by former President Bill Clinton.

Going to my 35th college reunion this weekend, and just filled out the "class survey." I was relieved to find that under the "Your gender" question, the choices were M, F, or "Other, please specify" with a box. I'm not sure that would pass muster with the current administration, as it seems to treat the non-M or F genders differently, analogous to having those single-person restroom options that were specifically rejected the D of E.
There were also questions asking your opinion on global warming, availability of guns, global terrorism, etc., with answer options ranging from something like "Catastrophe/End of the world" to "A good thing." Very happy to show some diversity in this.
On the other hand, they asked about what "green products" I own, with options like solar panels, electric car, etc. Unfortunately two of the options were "No Car" and "Bicycle," which, being the honest person I am, I had to check. We'll see how the results turn out.

This is the first I've ever gone to. I don't expect to enjoy it, but I guess there's a small chance I will.

Lou Dobbs opens his show with a contrast between Hillary's willingness to debate Obama in 2008 and her unwillingness to debate Bernie now.
FOX Reporter: Clinton was noncommittal yesterday about participating in a FOX News Debate in California, which Sanders has agreed to do. (Plays clip of Hillary yesterday)
Hilary: "I haven't thought about it. We'll consider it."
FOX Reporter continues: This cycle there have only been 9 Democratic Debates so far. Clinton debated then Senator Obama 19 times during the 2008 Campaign, and sounded open to more of them.
(Plays clip of Hillary in 2008)
Hillary: "I just believe that this is the most important job in the world. It's the toughest job in the world. You should be willing to campaign for every vote, you should be willing to Debate, anytime, anywhere."
FOX Reporter Late in the day Bernie Sanders called on Clinton to keep her word here in terms of participating in a date here in California. He says the people of the Nations most populous State deserve a "serious Debate." Lou...
Lou smiles:)

I must not be the sentimental sort. I've never gone to a reunion for any education level.

Lou: ...Potentially more serious trouble for the Clinton Campaign, specifically Hillary Clinton. The infamous Romanian hacker Guccifer, who said he easily broke into Clinton's Private Server, is now close to a Plea Deal with the Justice Department...Last month in a JailHouse interview he said he wanted to cooperate with the Government, and now he is apparently doing so. He is now expected to reverse course, plead Guilty to some of the charges in a Hearing that will be held Wednesday morning...He was the first source to expose Hillary Clinton's misuse of a Private E-mail server while she was Sec/State.

Thanks for the prayers for my momma. She was successfully cardioverted at 3:00. How long will she stay in sinus rhythm?
"Maybe ten minutes, maybe til she dies."
Gotta love those experienced, no bologna cardiologists.
She's hungry. Always a good sign.

Hillary's unveils her New Slogan:
WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!
Lou thinks a better slogan for her is:
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

My 35th reunion was the first I ever went to & I had a really good time. I didn't remember hardly anyone, but everyone was so nice that it didn't matter. Very fun.
