I am not looking for quite this level of energy and commitment from my family, but I admire this wife's spirit:
Colorado mother saves son from mountain lion attack
PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. (AP) -- Authorities say a mother fought off a mountain lion that attacked her 5-year-old son in Colorado on Friday night.
The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office told ABC-7 that the 5-year-old boy had been playing outside around 8 p.m. when the mountain lion attacked.
The sheriff's office says the boy's mother ran outside when she heard screaming and removed her son from the animal. The boy's face, head and neck had been injured.
Authorities told the TV station the boy was being transported to a Denver hospital in fair condition.
The mother hurt her hand and legs but has been released from the hospital.
The cat was then sent to its final resting place by LEOs.
For myself, a nice omelette and a stroll in the park will be fine. No mountain lions.
Ryan is laser focused on the general for his House members.
He doesn't have time to nursemaid Trump.<\i>
But he somehow finds the time to seek out microphones and audiences to criticize and condemn Trump.
All most of us are asking is that Ryan and other GOP leaders not actively work against their party's Presidential nominee. They don't have to agree with his every word or become a cheering section with no will or thoughts of their own. Just begin with not picking apart his every speech and comment in front of a gaggle of reporters. That's it.
Behind the scenes, they can make voodoo dolls of Trump, they can trash him at their private gatherings, and they can plan to write "why he lost and destroyed the party" articles the day after Election Day if he does lose.
But in public, just stay quiet if they must, but don't attack him, and especially don't attack him using the same language the Democrats do. Is that really so hard? Is that really so much to ask?

maryrose, you regularly push buttons and then play the victim. That is the behavior being described as trollish. But you are insightful and kind, too. I wish you would choose the latter over the former more frequently. You're better than button-pushing.
This blog hasn't changed at all. It's every bit the thoughtful and engaging place it used to be. We always had arguments; we just have them more frequently now that the stakes are higher.
It doesn't help that the GOP is self-destructing in front of our eyes.

maryrose --
Keep talking sense and ignoring the name callers.
In my opinion, it is up to the nominee to win each and every vote (s)he gets. That includes inspiring opinion leaders to go out and assist in winning votes from the general public. If the nominee cannot get the opinion leaders he needs to back him or to back him enthusiastically, that is on the nominee, not on those who are not motivated to vote for or work to elect the nominee. No one owes a nominee support or a vote; the nominee must EARN it, every time.
A whole lot of people have this backwards. They seem to think that if Ryan or others are not working hard for Trump, that is their fault, not Trump's. This is absolutely wrong.
If Trump loses, that will be because Trump failed. It is his task to get people to vote for him, including by getting people with the ability to persuade others, to work for his election. If he fails at that, HE is the cause of his own defeat.

Trying to remember the last time we had a Speaker from a state the R candidate won. Newt? Iirc not Hastert, Boehner, Ryan, or Ryan's underling Kevin McCarthy (CA). Maybe the problem is the R Speakers have very little familiarity with the R base.

JCB,
I don't have access to Mr. Trump's roadmap, and I don't need it in order to trust his leadership.
Mr. Trump often says in his speeches, that when he's the CIC, he's not going to let his generals go on tv and blab about their military plans. As a leader, he's doing exactly that.
He said during the primaries that he'd get far more than 1237. When he said that, I was doubtful that he'd win even the 1237, but what he said would happen happened.
Now he's saying that "We're going to win bigtime in November." I'm taking what he says about winning in November very seriously and am willing to let him win it his way.

I certainly agree that this place has changed and not for the better. One reason it has deteriorated is that a lot of good reasonable people like yourself, Jeff and others are not around too much any more.
The biggest failing is that there is not all that much actual argument any more. A lot of people now here do not seem willing or able to actually argue for or against a proposition, which is stimulating and enjoyable. Instead, the main effort of many people seems to be to engage in name calling and harassment of anyone who expresses a view that they do not like.

maryrose, many years ago, when I first posted at JOM, someone -- it doesn’t matter who -- took offense at something I said and came down pretty hard on me.
I replied that perhaps I had phrased my post poorly, because I had not intended to upset. I took some more heat, which I did not let provoke me, because it did not matter.
Someone jumped in to suggest that by my responses, I did not mean anything by my remarks.
I am grateful both for the manner in which I demurred in my response and for the acknowledgement that ideas matter more than who says what.

"ideas matter more than who says what."
Exactly right. We do not always have to agree. We are not always going to agree. But if we focus on the IDEAS being expressed and explore them from different perspectives, the disagreements (or arguments) are stimulating and useful.
The name calling just because someone holds a different opinion is not helpful to anyone. It hurts the feelings of those being called names and shows that the name caller has run out of logical arguments to make.

The task of winning elections involves overcoming obstacles, not complaining about them. This is why I say that Trump needs to win over the Ryans and McConnells rather than -- as many here would do -- simply complain that they are not doing what Trump wants.
