Free James D!

Ryan is laser focused on the general for his House members.
He doesn't have time to nursemaid Trump.<\i>

But he somehow finds the time to seek out microphones and audiences to criticize and condemn Trump.

All most of us are asking is that Ryan and other GOP leaders not actively work against their party's Presidential nominee. They don't have to agree with his every word or become a cheering section with no will or thoughts of their own. Just begin with not picking apart his every speech and comment in front of a gaggle of reporters. That's it.

Behind the scenes, they can make voodoo dolls of Trump, they can trash him at their private gatherings, and they can plan to write "why he lost and destroyed the party" articles the day after Election Day if he does lose.

But in public, just stay quiet if they must, but don't attack him, and especially don't attack him using the same language the Democrats do. Is that really so hard? Is that really so much to ask?

Porchlight

maryrose, you regularly push buttons and then play the victim. That is the behavior being described as trollish. But you are insightful and kind, too. I wish you would choose the latter over the former more frequently. You're better than button-pushing.

This blog hasn't changed at all. It's every bit the thoughtful and engaging place it used to be. We always had arguments; we just have them more frequently now that the stakes are higher.

It doesn't help that the GOP is self-destructing in front of our eyes.

Theo

maryrose --

Keep talking sense and ignoring the name callers.

In my opinion, it is up to the nominee to win each and every vote (s)he gets. That includes inspiring opinion leaders to go out and assist in winning votes from the general public. If the nominee cannot get the opinion leaders he needs to back him or to back him enthusiastically, that is on the nominee, not on those who are not motivated to vote for or work to elect the nominee. No one owes a nominee support or a vote; the nominee must EARN it, every time.

A whole lot of people have this backwards. They seem to think that if Ryan or others are not working hard for Trump, that is their fault, not Trump's. This is absolutely wrong.

If Trump loses, that will be because Trump failed. It is his task to get people to vote for him, including by getting people with the ability to persuade others, to work for his election. If he fails at that, HE is the cause of his own defeat.

Free James D!

But his wife works at Goldman Sachs so there is that albatross around his neck.sarc.

DebinNC

Trying to remember the last time we had a Speaker from a state the R candidate won. Newt? Iirc not Hastert, Boehner, Ryan, or Ryan's underling Kevin McCarthy (CA). Maybe the problem is the R Speakers have very little familiarity with the R base.

boris

"You don't get to be Speaker of the House because you lack accomplishment"

Apparently getting to be Speaker of the House doesn't require accomplishments either.

Nothing I said about Ryan was untrue.

I certainly have DebinNC. The nature of the, uh, beast.

Try reading it again, maryrose. One more time. With comprehension.

cheerleader

JCB,

I don't have access to Mr. Trump's roadmap, and I don't need it in order to trust his leadership.

Mr. Trump often says in his speeches, that when he's the CIC, he's not going to let his generals go on tv and blab about their military plans. As a leader, he's doing exactly that.

He said during the primaries that he'd get far more than 1237. When he said that, I was doubtful that he'd win even the 1237, but what he said would happen happened.

Now he's saying that "We're going to win bigtime in November." I'm taking what he says about winning in November very seriously and am willing to let him win it his way.

Jane

TM's views on Trump are clearly different than mine ... but he has not been concern trolling the "general politics" of commenters here.

Oh I see, if you own the place, but shut up about your opinions, that's fine with you.

This used to be a place where we welcomed different opinions and talked about them. Not any more.

Now it's all projection - "Ryan believes this", "Trump thinks this", "Kevin Williamson believes this".

The trumpets have turned this into the Trump version of Daily Kos on steroids.

A round of applause.

maryrose

I was insulted by your condescending and boorish comments toward me.

Beasts of England

You can't refute my arguments, so it's bring out the non sequiturs? Maybe we're identifying another problem, maryrose...

Miss Marple

Jane,

I am not projecting what Kevin Williamson believes.

He has written it down for all to see.

I just disagree with it and find it insulting.

Theo

Jane --

I certainly agree that this place has changed and not for the better. One reason it has deteriorated is that a lot of good reasonable people like yourself, Jeff and others are not around too much any more.

The biggest failing is that there is not all that much actual argument any more. A lot of people now here do not seem willing or able to actually argue for or against a proposition, which is stimulating and enjoyable. Instead, the main effort of many people seems to be to engage in name calling and harassment of anyone who expresses a view that they do not like.

Jane

Yeah, MM, you never project anything. I'll take that to the bank.

I will help Mary Rose out

The sum entirety of every bill ever introduced by Paul Ryan that was passed into law:

Paul Ryan's legislative achievements in his 14 years: renaming a post office & lowering excise taxes on making arrows

Coincidentally, the new name for that post office is the Ted Nugent Post Office, and you can buy discount arrows there.

lyle

Welp, that's a tidy finish so that golf doesn't interfere with roundball.

Beasts of England

Are we ever going to get a list of Ryan's accomplishment(s)? lol

Miss Marple

Jane,

I readily agree I might project on other issues.

Kevin Williamson, however, speaks for himself.

Will work on my liberal friends this week.

So you will be leaving your conservative friends alone?

A relief...

Beasts of England

Theo's 8:01 pegged my ironyometer at '12'. Priceless.

Wow, LS, that's some rib-rocked "conservativism" right there! Burnished, even.

We are not around anymore Theo, because there is absolutely no value to having your own opinion. I'm in contact with many of the people who left and everyone feels the exact same way.

Well, JOM now has Theo which certainly makes for a change. Jane is here hardly ever, and that makes for a change. You need to decide whether that is good or bad.

lyle

I sure hope so, Theo!

sbw

maryrose, many years ago, when I first posted at JOM, someone -- it doesn’t matter who -- took offense at something I said and came down pretty hard on me.

I replied that perhaps I had phrased my post poorly, because I had not intended to upset. I took some more heat, which I did not let provoke me, because it did not matter.

Someone jumped in to suggest that by my responses, I did not mean anything by my remarks.

I am grateful both for the manner in which I demurred in my response and for the acknowledgement that ideas matter more than who says what.

buccaneer morgan

they finally got around to censuring koskinen, for his offenses against the tea party, four years after the fact,

Beasts of England

No shit, lyle. This place used to be a tribute to rational argument and facts. Now there's a demand for a kaffeeklatsch.

JMHanes

maryrose:

"Third from the presidency- but hey he is just mediocre in his accomplishments Sarc!"

LOL! Look at the guy who made it all the way to the White House.

buccaneer morgan

does theo forget that's what was responsible for obama's 'unexpected' victory,

Theo

sbw --

"ideas matter more than who says what."

Exactly right. We do not always have to agree. We are not always going to agree. But if we focus on the IDEAS being expressed and explore them from different perspectives, the disagreements (or arguments) are stimulating and useful.

The name calling just because someone holds a different opinion is not helpful to anyone. It hurts the feelings of those being called names and shows that the name caller has run out of logical arguments to make.

lyle

I've decided I don't like Lebron OR Curry. Can't wait for football season.

Beasts of England

Exactly, sbw. Two nights ago I left a comment that Beester took as an offense. He asked about it and I further explained - cleared it right up immediately. No harm, no foul. How hard is that?

Jane

Well it is certainly better for you Holly, isn't it?

Threadkiller

Me too, sbw. My first post had a formatting problem and I was dismissed as a "cut and paster."

It was awful.

Obama's victory was hardly unexpected. And I recall precisely the cause for it -- he got the most votes.

Yeah, just look at the accomplishments of who's second in line to the presidency!

Beasts of England

Theo: I tried to explain data, data normalization, predictive statistics and more to you the other day. Did I call you any names? No. You know why? You were advancing your argument. We ended up disagreeing, but there was no acrimony.

I am not actually sure we ended up disagreeing all that much. I respected your thoughts and input and am sorry if I was unable to convince you that we were mostly talking past each other. (For example, I was not attempting to PREDICT anything.)

In any event, for sure there was no acrimony.

Beasts of England

Who is Holly? Have some resorted to doxxing?

Very big tornado in central MN. They got whacked by storms last summer too. Praying it's not too bad.

Theo

buccaneer --

You left out the complicit media.

The task of winning elections involves overcoming obstacles, not complaining about them. This is why I say that Trump needs to win over the Ryans and McConnells rather than -- as many here would do -- simply complain that they are not doing what Trump wants.

Beasts of England

At the risk of pedantry, election polls are often used to predict, Theo. But again, we just have different methodologies and statistical tolerances. I enjoyed the discussion. Not the end of the world...

Jeff Dobbs

One reason it has deteriorated is that a lot of good reasonable people like yourself, Jeff and others are not around too much any more.

No, no, it's a good thing I'm gone. I'm glad to be gone. I don't want to be not gone. I have too many anti-social tendencies that I suppressed for way longer than should have been possible.

I hate everyone.

Except you know who. I'm not saying, but you know who you are.

DebinNC

Verdict in Freddie Gray van driver's trial tomorrow morning. I'm a long-time trial junkie, so I've followed some doozies. But I've never seen the level of venality and incompetence shown by these hack prosecutors, except perhaps Mike Nifong. If there were justice in this world Marilyn Mosby would be similarly disgraced and disbarred.

Beasts of England

When's tip off this evening?

Theo

Jeff -

EVERYONE here is anti-social. Why else would we spend so much time typing to strangers?

Please stop being gone. You can still hate us all. Just hang out with us.

well sanford, anchorage, chicago, madison, washington, need I see anymore, the first is indicative, what crump/julian thought as a fillip, is now state policy,

JMHanes

I'm someone who left for a couple of years, myself, and finally decided to come back, and I have to say, I'm sick of hearing how great JOM used to be.

If you want it to be great, stick around, take your lumps, and make it so. Don't hang around basically insulting everybody here by complaining how about how bad the place has gotten. Sheesh.

buccaneer morgan

well maybe we're part of a computer simulation, has elon musk had a concussion recently?

That has happened to me as well and I have followed your path of least resistance.
The lack of respect and willingness to acknowledge another viewpoint is what is so troubling to me.There seems to me to be this over-riding sense of superiority that certain posters opinions have more value than others.

In addition when hostility is pointed out by another poster the originator completely denies doing it ,infers a lack of comprehension and then tries to spin his way out of it with the some lame comment of that being the nature of the Beast yuk yuk.
Jane is right and it saddens me that it is so.

Beasts of England

Ryan renamed a Post Office and did something for our critical arrow industrial complex? Boy, do I feel bad now for criticizing such a dazzling legislator!! I'll be sure to say five GOPe's and pray my NeverTrump rosary before I go to bed...

Beasts of England

Eat shit, maryrose.

Unlike the GOPe elites, the USGA elites know how to STFU and let Johnson win without any controversy. Good for them. Saves my rant.

Bad decision on the part of the USGA. He never grounded his putter behind the ball. Another anal retentive decision by the stupid fucking elites of golf. No wonder I don't officiate anymore. You should see them in local tournaments. They get their nuts off if someone is a few minutes off schedule so they can penalize them.

Believe me the USGA is the GOPe in a nutshell.
