TM, thank you for calling jihad jihad. It balances the ignorant "assault rifle" and Obama nonsense of your last two links.

Beasts of England

Wikipedia says that an assault rifle must be capable of selective fire. Are the police sure that the terrorist's weapon was so configured?

Beasts of England

Military roots. Scary!!

Beasts of England

Maybe they meant 'assault weapon', which can be categorized by a flash suppressor or a bayonet mount? Scary stuff. Probably has military roots.

jimmyk

From the last thread:

Burns has apparently entered a state of dementia; he obviously has mistaken Mr. Trump (for all his warts) for some scary monster in his fevered imagination.

You could substitute practically anyone in the MSM, Hollywood, and the Democratic Party (but I repeat myself) for Burns and that statement would work. Not to mention quite a few Republicans, sadly.

Frau Eichhörnchen

Pres. Leads-from-Behind now "expresses" outrage... how will we know if he is really truly outraged?

Perhaps Spokes-Churl Earnest will tell us tomorrow.

jimmyk

And the Tony Awards are tonight (just a stone's throw from my home). What's the over-under on remarks that (1) are anti-2nd Amendment; (2) are anti-Trump; (3) use the I or M word. I'd say 10, 5, 0.

Captain Hate

The sooner everybody realizes what a taxpayer funded pile of [Redacted] Ken Burns is, the better.

jimmyk

I should amend my '0' in my 6:38: That refers to using the I or M word in connection with the attacker. Positive comments about Islam being a peaceful religion will no doubt be pronounced.

Rocco

My gut tells me this is going to wake up a lot of people in the middle, especially women.

sbw

Headline s/b:

Gunman Claiming Allegiance to ISIS Kills 50 at Orlando Nightclub; President feigns ignorance

Roots, roots, such musical shoots; the truth is off without its boots.

Military roots, trunked violence, branching mayhem, itchy-fingered twigs, and leaves in bloody fall color. I've never seen such a ferocious tree, but I can tell you anyhee, I'd rather be than see one.

Free James D!

Following up on Beasts' post in the last threat re: the latest reports on all the red flags raised by the shooter...

So it's like the Boston bombing all over again. Jihadi who does everything short of putting a neon sign reading "Terrorist at Work" in front of his house, but somehow nobody in the FBI or DOJ or Homeland Security can connect the dots and prevent a massacre.

So when will there be some accountability? Anyone in the private sector who let such a horrific disaster happen on their watch would be looking for a new job right now, and their employer would already be busy interviewing good liability defense lawyers and going through their insurance policies with a fine tooth comb.

But we all know that nobody in the federal government will be fired, demoted, reprimanded or even spoken harshly to, despite the deaths of 50+ citizens at the hands of someone they knew was a threat.

And yet, somehow, according to the President, WE are the ones who need to change, to be reeducated, to have yet more rights taken away.

Captain Hate

I don't think he's faking it, sbw; Zippy is 100% ignorant.

MaryD

Rocco, my gut says that most of the "women in the middle' are unaware that this attack took place

Theo

I have no doubt that no draft of Obama's speech contained any reference to "bigoted haters whose religion does not endorse gay marriage," because someone might have thought he was calling out Muslims.

Obama would never do any such thing. It is a religion of peace and the whole throwing gays off of roof top thing is just a form of "compassion."

buccaneer morgan

Yes, imam musri who had a captain Renault moment some years ago, re that father and son pair in Miami would agree.

Rocco

Now now, let's not be so quick to condemn the FBI, they're really really busy investigating the Democrat's Presidential nominee.

Beasts of England

I noticed something similar at the pressers, James D. Six different agencies each talking about how hard they worked and interacted, thanked each other for their cooperation, and had such a fine response, but the dots that would have saved lives had they been connected were never discussed. I assume that these agencies are hamstrung by protocol - or worse - but eventually someone is going to break ranks and inform of how they were told to look the other way.

Free James D!

Maybe, Beasts. But it'll be one lone whistleblower who will be studiously ignored by the MSM and retaliated against by Obama and company, and nothing will come of it. As always.

Rocco

MaryD, I was just thinking that after 9/11, support for the GOP from women increased significantly IIRC. Wishful thinking perhaps?

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

What's the over/under on more than five people watching the Tonys?

Beasts of England

I don't disagree, James D.- rather hoping that the next administration will be more amenable to the truth.

Janet

Say a prayer for them and say a prayer for their families --

I'll have to get off my high horse first.

henry

Ignatz, a certain subgroup will tune in to the Tonys for community reinforcement. I expect an over compared to whatever the normal audience is.

buccaneer morgan

Yes a Phil haney type will have been tracking this, as it stands now the imam was isna which really aren't good eggs.

buccaneer morgan

One he does seem to have been a well connected fellow, wrangled board seats with the Medici through governor author.

Free James D!

Beasts @ 6:58

I hope so. But the next administration will have to go to war with the bureaucracy in order to get at that truth.

And just as Romney and his fellow GOPe'ers will fight harder and nastier against fellow Republicans than against Democrats, the bureaucrats will fight harder and nastier against fellow Americans than against jihadists and other foreign enemies.

squaredance

BTW, nobody in the military calls any rifle an "assault rifle", or at least they did not until very recently. "Assault rifle" is just a crafted term that the Progs cam up with for the purpose of their agitprop. It is no the order of calling abortion "women's right to choose", or calling those who disagree with them on their climate change scam "deniers".

They have been very successful with this legerdemain, but it is completely bogus.

Frau Eichhörnchen

CH, you've probably heard/read Charles Leerhsen's Ty Cobb biography, "A Terrible Beauty."
LUN NYT review (sorry)

Burns did no research of his own on Ty Cobb. Pfui!

Frau Eichhörnchen

I'm not impressed when BHO tells me to pray for fellow Americans.
IIRC former presidents actually led the country in prayer.

MaryD

Good point, Rocco, but I think that 9/11 and Orlando are somewhat apples and oranges events, both in scope and in victims. IOW,9/11 was an indiscriminate attack on all Americans, with major infrastructure damage, and Orlando was, as far as we know, the work of a cell or a lone gunman targeting a single segment of the population.

Don't get me wrong, I thin both attacks are equally reprehensible, but I also think it takes a 2x4 to wake a lot of women up

Stephanie

Y'all must have missed Gurka early this morning...

he said on F&F before he was cut off that he was doing a security training seminar with approx 250 mid western city cops and after he went through all the things to look for for terrorists some idiot from Justice who was monitoring the seminar told them to ignore Gurka as the #1 problem of terrorism was from militias and the white patriot movements.

On my way back from Biloxi and almost drove off the road.. both at the stupidity of the statement and how quickly F&F shut him down on that.

Janet

An interesting bit about the Imam that was lecturing on killing homosexuals.
Here is the lecture he gave in 2013 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRRsCtJLTQo

Published on Apr 26, 2013

A discussion delivered at the University of Michigan in Dearborn by Sheikh Farrokh Sekaleshfar focusing on the sin of homosexuality from an Islamic perspective. Presented by the students for Academic Awareness.

Then in 2016 he was invited to speak at the The Husseini Islamic Center in Sanford, FL.

I wonder how many other places Sheikh Farrokh Sekaleshfar has been invited to speak at?

Janet

I don't see a group called Students for Academic Awareness at UM-Dearborn.

There is a Students for Islamic Awareness though.

From wiki;

The term assault rifle is generally attributed to Adolf Hitler, who for propaganda purposes used the German word "Sturmgewehr" (which translates to "assault rifle"), as the new name for the MP43, subsequently known as the Sturmgewehr 44 or StG 44.

Breitbart: "Orlando Terrorist: The Most Gun Control-Compliant Shooter in History?

Florida resident Omar S. Mateen was registered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a private security officer with an additional Class G Firearm License. Compared to a standard civilian concealed carry permit issued by the same Department, Mateen was required to undergo the full battery of common gun control measures floated after mass shootings.

Before acquiring a Class G permit, Mateen completed the requirements for the prerequisite Class D protocol. The Basic Security Officer Training process requires the completion of a 40 hour course over four consecutive days by a school or instructor licensed by the State of Florida. Mateen had to clear a criminal background check to satisfy the requirements and be legally able to work in the United States.

Mateen’s Class G firearm license was far more detailed. The gunman completed an additional 28 hours of guided instruction focusing on legal statutes governing the permit and responsibilities therein (12 hours); operational safety and firearm mechanics (8 hours); and a firearms qualification exam in a shooting range for eight hours. He passed a 96-round shooting proficiency battery. Thereafter, Mateen’s criminal background was reviewed again pursuant to the application and submitted to a separate medical evaluation that certified he had no conditions that “would preclude [Mateen] from performing duties in an armed capacity.”

The .223 caliber assault rifle and 9mm pistol used in the mass shooting were confirmed to be legally purchased by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in a tweet published Sunday afternoon."

"Assault Rifles" are banned in Chicago. Illinois law required a firearm card, FOID, to purchase and possess a firearm (background checks run on all cards daily). A permit is required to carry a firearm. 100% of shooters caught in Chicago have no firearm card or concealed carry permit. And I am guessing they are not NRA members. Shootings in Chicago are basically 100% handguns.

Chicago stats 1/1/16 through 6/11/16:

Total # of people shot & wounded: 1,674
Total # of people shot & killed: 253
Total # of people killed by other means: 31

I was out picking up some food and the guy doing the Sox postgame on the radio was talking about trade possibilities and Verlander's name came up, and a caller mentioned he's engaged to Kate Hudson. The host joked that he'd "kill everyone in the building" to get a chance to stand next to Hudson, then in his next breath he realized what he'd said and started apologizing. He apologized 4 times by the time I got back.

Captain Hate

I wish someone would do a Ken Burns-style documentary exposing all the shoddy work that Burns has done.

He pretty much let Stanley Crouch and Wynton Marsalis be his sole references for his "Jazz" crockumentary which ignored anything done from the mid 60s and the entire avant garde. He turned the genre into a museum piece. I'd be surprised if he even listened to any of the records released from it, much less enjoyed them.

Burns's "Baseball" was essentially the Yankees vs Red Sox, plus racism and Jackie Robinson. And of course he completely fictionalized the Central Park Five into innocent victims rather than perps who pulled one of the tax-hustling scams of the century.

Lin Manuel Miranda, winning a category for Hamilton, read a sonnet he wrote today for his acceptance. Very well done.

The Hamilton cast did a Town Hall on Sirius’ On Broadway, that was well worth a listen.

The producer sells some premium seats for $849 to undercut scalpers. Then takes the extra fund to hold a nightly lottery for a section of tickets for the masses each at $10 -- a Hamilton, of course.

A liberal friend at church today was saying much the same thing about Hamilton, sbw. How it makes historical characters seem like real people even though it was 200 years ago. I resisted pointing out that the Lesson, the Epistle and the Gospel we had just heard were about real people 2000 or more years ago. :)

She was also excited about the multicultural cast, because historical accuracy (all white guys) wouldn't be authentic or something. And she said that the creator is Puerto Rican so without nonwhites he wouldn't have been able to relate. (? I didn't quite get that. Are black people unable to understand Shakespeare?) Also the music being hip-hop influenced.

I confess I didn't come away with a great desire to experience it for myself. But I defer to JOMers.

Personally, I have a deep love for the film of the musical 1776. Even though it, too, was obviously made by liberals. I recommended it to her and she said she'd check it out.

Robin Surrounded by the 10 Sq. Miles of Crazy

Porchlight,

I've been listening to the Hamilton recording (free on Amazon Prime radio) with my 9 year old daughter. She is obsessed with the cast of characters and it's led to some very good discussions about the founding of our country.

We are not alone. I know so many kids and teens who are also consumed with the music. You have to know that the clever lyrics are sinking into their subconscious. This is a seminal work that will, I think in these dark times, offer a new way of celebrating and protecting our history. There is no question that the creator understood the value of a man like Hamilton.

Buckeye

Hmmm, I think I will buy a crossbow.

Not on Tom Brokaws radar.

Robin Surrounded by the 10 Sq. Miles of Crazy

There is a charming "break up" song that King George sings to the colonies after receiving the Declaration of Independence - it's my daughter's favorite. She likes that it drips with sarcasm.

sbw

”I am not throwing away my shot!”

Is so individual, and so anti-prog.

squaredance

It is exceedingly strange that a response to this attack today would be to not use muskets.

Of course, in Hamilton's day they would have distributed more of them. They would have not merely protected the lives of their countrymen, but the honor of their country.

This is how emasculated we are. This latest assault is an act of war, and yet the left sees it as another moment to virtue signal about guns.

I am exceptional that a multicult, "diverse" musical can really convey the essence of our forefather's legacy, particularly with this bit of of nonsense. It may well be that it is just another liberal co-option of the past; the young today may not see through this.

Frau Eichhörnchen

Porch, that's the book I linked up thread. Charles Leehrsen gave a speech at Hillsdale on his book which was mailed out with the college's Imprimis mailing.

Maryd

Robin, I haven't been at all interested in "Hamilton" but I'm very intrigued by your comments. Is there a cast recording?

Porchlight

Thanks, Robin. As long as the history is accurate, it can only help, I hope.

My kids (13, 9, 6) really like 1776. Perhaps yours would, too. We watch it every Independence Day. The DVD is very inexpensive on Amazon - it may even be streaming.

Frau Eichhörnchen

I listened to several portions of Hamilton today and didn't really heart the hip-hop segments. The staging was good.
Today's Sunday supplement wrote about "Hamilton fever" and what to do until it arrives in LA. "1776" was suggested, Porch.

Porchlight

Frau, sorry I missed your link. The Imprimus issue inspired me to read it!
