Gunman Claiming Allegiance to ISIS Kills 50 at Orlando Nightclub
ORLANDO, Fla. — A gunman who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State killed 50 people and wounded 53 in a crowded gay nightclub here early Sunday. The gunman, identified as Omar Mateen, had been investigated twice by the F.B.I. for possible connections to terrorism, the bureau said, but no ties could be confirmed.

President Obama Expresses Outrage Over Massacre at Nightclub
I should STFU right now but here I go. Obama's remarks included a call for prayer:
In the coming hours and days, we’ll learn about the victims of this tragedy. Their names. Their faces. Who they were. The joy that they brought to families and to friends, and the difference that they made in this world. Say a prayer for them and say a prayer for their families -- that God give them the strength to bear the unbearable. And that He give us all the strength to be there for them, and the strength and courage to change. We need to demonstrate that we are defined more -- as a country -- by the way they lived their lives than by the hate of the man who took them from us.
First, of course every true Christian will pray for these people.
Second, my guess is that the original draft read something like this:
"I would like all you bigoted haters whose religion does not endorse gay marriage to say a prayer for these victims and their families..."
Cooler heads prevailed.
TM, thank you for calling jihad jihad. It balances the ignorant "assault rifle" and Obama nonsense of your last two links.

Wikipedia says that an assault rifle must be capable of selective fire. Are the police sure that the terrorist's weapon was so configured?

From the last thread:
Burns has apparently entered a state of dementia; he obviously has mistaken Mr. Trump (for all his warts) for some scary monster in his fevered imagination.
You could substitute practically anyone in the MSM, Hollywood, and the Democratic Party (but I repeat myself) for Burns and that statement would work. Not to mention quite a few Republicans, sadly.

Following up on Beasts' post in the last threat re: the latest reports on all the red flags raised by the shooter...
So it's like the Boston bombing all over again. Jihadi who does everything short of putting a neon sign reading "Terrorist at Work" in front of his house, but somehow nobody in the FBI or DOJ or Homeland Security can connect the dots and prevent a massacre.
So when will there be some accountability? Anyone in the private sector who let such a horrific disaster happen on their watch would be looking for a new job right now, and their employer would already be busy interviewing good liability defense lawyers and going through their insurance policies with a fine tooth comb.
But we all know that nobody in the federal government will be fired, demoted, reprimanded or even spoken harshly to, despite the deaths of 50+ citizens at the hands of someone they knew was a threat.
And yet, somehow, according to the President, WE are the ones who need to change, to be reeducated, to have yet more rights taken away.

Obama would never do any such thing. It is a religion of peace and the whole throwing gays off of roof top thing is just a form of "compassion."

I noticed something similar at the pressers, James D. Six different agencies each talking about how hard they worked and interacted, thanked each other for their cooperation, and had such a fine response, but the dots that would have saved lives had they been connected were never discussed. I assume that these agencies are hamstrung by protocol - or worse - but eventually someone is going to break ranks and inform of how they were told to look the other way.

"Assault rifle" is just a crafted term that the Progs cam up with for the purpose of their agitprop. It is no the order of calling abortion "women's right to choose", or calling those who disagree with them on their climate change scam "deniers".
They have been very successful with this legerdemain, but it is completely bogus.

Good point, Rocco, but I think that 9/11 and Orlando are somewhat apples and oranges events, both in scope and in victims. IOW,9/11 was an indiscriminate attack on all Americans, with major infrastructure damage, and Orlando was, as far as we know, the work of a cell or a lone gunman targeting a single segment of the population.
Don't get me wrong, I thin both attacks are equally reprehensible, but I also think it takes a 2x4 to wake a lot of women up

Breitbart: "Orlando Terrorist: The Most Gun Control-Compliant Shooter in History?
Florida resident Omar S. Mateen was registered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a private security officer with an additional Class G Firearm License. Compared to a standard civilian concealed carry permit issued by the same Department, Mateen was required to undergo the full battery of common gun control measures floated after mass shootings.
Before acquiring a Class G permit, Mateen completed the requirements for the prerequisite Class D protocol. The Basic Security Officer Training process requires the completion of a 40 hour course over four consecutive days by a school or instructor licensed by the State of Florida. Mateen had to clear a criminal background check to satisfy the requirements and be legally able to work in the United States.
Mateen’s Class G firearm license was far more detailed. The gunman completed an additional 28 hours of guided instruction focusing on legal statutes governing the permit and responsibilities therein (12 hours); operational safety and firearm mechanics (8 hours); and a firearms qualification exam in a shooting range for eight hours. He passed a 96-round shooting proficiency battery. Thereafter, Mateen’s criminal background was reviewed again pursuant to the application and submitted to a separate medical evaluation that certified he had no conditions that “would preclude [Mateen] from performing duties in an armed capacity.”
The .223 caliber assault rifle and 9mm pistol used in the mass shooting were confirmed to be legally purchased by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in a tweet published Sunday afternoon."

"Assault Rifles" are banned in Chicago. Illinois law required a firearm card, FOID, to purchase and possess a firearm (background checks run on all cards daily). A permit is required to carry a firearm. 100% of shooters caught in Chicago have no firearm card or concealed carry permit. And I am guessing they are not NRA members. Shootings in Chicago are basically 100% handguns.
Chicago stats 1/1/16 through 6/11/16:
Total # of people shot & wounded: 1,674
Total # of people shot & killed: 253
Total # of people killed by other means: 31

The Hamilton cast did a Town Hall on Sirius’ On Broadway, that was well worth a listen.

A liberal friend at church today was saying much the same thing about Hamilton, sbw. How it makes historical characters seem like real people even though it was 200 years ago. I resisted pointing out that the Lesson, the Epistle and the Gospel we had just heard were about real people 2000 or more years ago. :)
She was also excited about the multicultural cast, because historical accuracy (all white guys) wouldn't be authentic or something. And she said that the creator is Puerto Rican so without nonwhites he wouldn't have been able to relate. (? I didn't quite get that. Are black people unable to understand Shakespeare?) Also the music being hip-hop influenced.
I confess I didn't come away with a great desire to experience it for myself. But I defer to JOMers.
Personally, I have a deep love for the film of the musical 1776. Even though it, too, was obviously made by liberals. I recommended it to her and she said she'd check it out.

Porchlight,
I've been listening to the Hamilton recording (free on Amazon Prime radio) with my 9 year old daughter. She is obsessed with the cast of characters and it's led to some very good discussions about the founding of our country.
We are not alone. I know so many kids and teens who are also consumed with the music. You have to know that the clever lyrics are sinking into their subconscious. This is a seminal work that will, I think in these dark times, offer a new way of celebrating and protecting our history. There is no question that the creator understood the value of a man like Hamilton.

It is exceedingly strange that a response to this attack today would be to not use muskets.
Of course, in Hamilton's day they would have distributed more of them. They would have not merely protected the lives of their countrymen, but the honor of their country.
This is how emasculated we are. This latest assault is an act of war, and yet the left sees it as another moment to virtue signal about guns.
I am exceptional that a multicult, "diverse" musical can really convey the essence of our forefather's legacy, particularly with this bit of of nonsense. It may well be that it is just another liberal co-option of the past; the young today may not see through this.

Porch, that's the book I linked up thread. Charles Leehrsen gave a speech at Hillsdale on his book which was mailed out with the college's Imprimis mailing.

Robin, I haven't been at all interested in "Hamilton" but I'm very intrigued by your comments. Is there a cast recording?

Thanks, Robin. As long as the history is accurate, it can only help, I hope.
My kids (13, 9, 6) really like 1776. Perhaps yours would, too. We watch it every Independence Day. The DVD is very inexpensive on Amazon - it may even be streaming.

I listened to several portions of Hamilton today and didn't really heart the hip-hop segments. The staging was good.
Today's Sunday supplement wrote about "Hamilton fever" and what to do until it arrives in LA. "1776" was suggested, Porch.

Frau, sorry I missed your link. The Imprimus issue inspired me to read it!
