After shrugging off a period where Do futures were down over 500 points, the Dow is now down a mere 375. The S&P 500 is down, but only about 2% to 2067, so well off the overnight lows.
Sterling is getting pounded, down about 7% from yesterday's levels. Eurostocks are faring comparably poorly - Vanguard's FTSE Europe ETF is down 9% in dollar terms.
And what does it mean? You tell me.

Obama's BREXIT statement:
The people of the United Kingdom have spoken, and we respect their decision. The special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom is enduring, and the United Kingdom’s membership in NATO remains a vital cornerstone of U.S. foreign, security, and economic policy. So too is our relationship with the European Union, which has done so much to promote stability, stimulate economic growth, and foster the spread of democratic values and ideals across the continent and beyond. The United Kingdom and the European Union will remain indispensable partners of the United States even as they begin negotiating their ongoing relationship to ensure continued stability, security, and prosperity for Europe, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the world.

An explanation from our favorite lurking unit:
To correct Theo(11:43 PM yest.), $/¥ is not a "Safety Trade". The flight to the ¥ is the forced unwind of every Carry Trade based on ¥ borrowing. Currencies trade only in pairs, like a seesaw, where one gains, another suffers. These movements are ALL due to forced unwinds of leveraged trades, so far.
Let's hope it doesn't lead to a cascade effect.

Frum has had some good articles in The Atlantic on immigration.
"Donald Trump’s noisy complaints that immigration is out of control are literally true. Nobody is making conscious decisions about who is wanted and who is not, about how much immigration to accept and what kind to prioritize—not even for the portion of U.S. migration conducted according to law, much less for the larger portion that is not."

Iggy-Red has always loved churchill so when I took her and the diva to london when they were 10 and 7 we toured the war rooms. They were the only kids there (it was march) and she ended up being interviewed by british radio on what children could learn from the then just opened exhibit.
Great quote always reminds me of what she told the interviewer that day. She also told the tour guide at the horse parade that charles i wore two shirts that cold day of his execution so that no one would think he was shaking from fright at his fate.
We take away the moorings when we fail to teach the stories of the past to inspire how to best deal with the present.

I have been absolutely appalled to read the FB comments from my British writer friends this morning about the surprise vote in the UK. They are angrily condemning everyone who supported Britain exiting the EU as ignorant and prejudiced. They're not simply expressing their disagreement with the result, they're sneering at the morality and intellectual capacity of all those people who supported a different result. Their arrogance and sense of personal superiority is simply overwhelming.
There was a time when writers saw themselves as among the most intellectually bold and revolutionary of people. But now that we are witnessing a moment in history, a genuine populist revolution sweeping the Englsh-speaking world, what part are writers playing?
They've become Mitt Romney with a laptop...
Posting for that last line alone....

Holy shades of Mohamed ElBaradei! We all remember him, right? Back in 2007, the IAEA director (along with the whole Thomas Fingar crowd) decided that Bush/Cheney, not the Iranian mullahs, were the chief threat to world peace:
ElBaradei popped up again in Egypt, of course, where Obama gambled on Kerry, ElBaradei partnership and lost America’s credibility in 2013:
I had forgotten about the very “special relationship” between the two of them:At various times both ElBaradei and Hans Blix wondered aloud why Iran and Iraq, respectively, would even want nuclear weapons, anyway.... The IAEA is not our friend.

48% of the British population are not all writers or leftist hippies. Geez!
There were some compelling interests at stake in the vote to Remain. The problem is that this EU is not a cafeteria, although some countries, like the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece and France have all cut their own deals like in Fisheries, agricultural, etc. Cameron did try to get the EU to soften up those crazy regs like for Kettles and hair dryers. But once you start pulling that thread the whole sweater is at risk.
This is not a result of one British class versus another British class (ie. income, education, employment, age and race) but rather an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with the experiment. My family there are all college educated (Oxbridge), work in professions and voted to leave simply because their quality of British life has diminished severly under the heavy hand of Brussels without any force of defense by the UK government.
It was the British flyover country from the midlands to the downs up to the moors and along the rivers that voted to leave. The most vulnerable to EU intrusion into their lives. The Irish and Scots chose to stay because the EU membership is socialistic just like they are and they feel part of it versus being with those English fags. Nativism on display versus an United Kingdom. So, it was the English and Welsh who made the vote.
You can bet they are dancing at Windsor Castle.

Looking at some of the reaction to the Brexit vote from the more hysterical/elitist/insulting quarters, it's clear that they still Do.Not.Get.It.
At all.
Had they made any effort, even a token one, to address the concerns and fears of those who have not benefitted from EU membership and EU policies and large-scale immigration, there might never have been a Brexit vote.
But they couldn't be bothered to even pretend to care about those silly little people. And this is the result.

The civilian federal government now has more LE officers authorized to carry guns than the Marine Corpse.
Think about this for a minute; our lovely Dem bastards fight hammer and tong to deprive us, the citizens, of the semi auto AR-15 but fight to make sure the IRS, supposedly a tax collection agency, is armed with expensive, improved versions of the M16/M4 full auto selective fire military rifles that only the Delta Force carries.
They are revolting, so we are revolting.
