Oh, brother.
OK, the Brexit question du jour - can London survive as the leading financial center of Europe (not to mention the world) if whatever is left of the UK is out of both the Euro and the EU?
In terms of current rankings, global finance is basically the old British Empire plus Zurich and Tokyo. Having English as the lingua franca is a plus, because bankers, lawyers and operations staff can flit around the globe relatively painlessly.
A logical long-term successor would be Frankfurt, currently placed at 18 on the global list. But would French, Italian and other European leaders - excuse me, "leaders" - be comfortable with Germany as the financial as well as commercial superpower of Europe?
Proponents of the "English spoken here" theory will note that Dublin (currently 39th) and post-independence Edinburgh (56th) are potential European alternatives.
That said, England will remain a major world economy with a very long history as a financial center with widely understood rules. It's decline would probably take decades.

Here is a fine response to the REMAIN crowd from an MEP at an Oxford Union debate. I recommend that you listen to it--it is brief.
At the end he quotes Tennyson, but truncates it.
This last stanza of his Ulysseskeeps coming up in the media--it was even in a Bond film--but it never seems to get quoted in full, so I will post it here.

There will be no Brit decline. And if EU wants to survive, it will need to change back to Common Market arrangements. The borderless order is ending. It won't be pretty. As rse has documented, the universal therapy state adherents are determined to impose their totalitarian will. But the Brits have taken a necessary step in modulating the excesses of the universal therapy state.

The threat to London is the same as it is to the rest of the world; $100 trillion in bonds outstanding, $500 trillion in derivatives based on them and a world economy crippled by the masters of the central bank universe policies.
Crises usually take a different form than the last one so perhaps it will be more political or several extensions of politics by other means this time instead of a deer in the headlights financial crisis.
But, as night follows day, there is ALWAYS a reckoning for stupid policies which defy mathematics, the real word and human nature.
We are witnessing one of the greatest bull markets in worldwide stupidity in history.

From TC in the last thread;
Seems to me pretty much every data point I've seen indicates the enthusiasm gap and votes this year compared to previous ones disfavors the Dems.
Am I wrong?

Even its opponents admit, that in the UK wages will go up, food prices down. I see the possibility to trade with partners less moribund that most of Europe is. I think much of the downturn is based on uncertainty, but until new tariff arrangements are worked out big retailers are facing uncertain projections on future earnings and the travel industry will be in a tizzy. I'm going abroad soon and wonder what currency to use in each country--I expect some euros and some dollars and American Express for most other things.
BTW about that phony baloney poll:http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/nbc-wsj-poll-clinton-leads-trump-5-points-n598716
It's closer than Reuters and probably much closer than this one shows.

An interesting phenomenon I have noticed on Twitter and YouTube are the numbers of independent videos supporting Trump. I did not notice this in the last election supporting Romney.
Here is one, which I posted on the last thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTWpjrfzUVg&feature=youtu.be
Now, some may think this is too religious or Bible-based, which I fully understand. However, it's well done and speaks to the emotional connection which apparently is bubbling just below the surface, much like that of Brexit.
You cannot buy this level of loyalty. It comes from the heart.

Ig, the enthusiasm gap may depend on how many #nevertrump exist outside of paid talking heads and unemployed campaign drones. Certainly a Reuters polling team knows more in that group than in the hoi polloi in flyover country -- and may be Pauline Kaeling their estimates on turnout. This year is odd, I have no sense of what will happen in November.

In other news, the Western States Endurance Run was held yesterday. The winner was Andrew Miller, age 20, who finished the 100-mile trail race from Squaw Valley (near Lake Tahoe) to Auburn in 15 hours, 39 minutes.

Posted by: Thomas Collins | June 26, 2016 at 11:58 AM
Ignatz, re enthusiasm: primary turnout is not a good predictor of general election results. And the Goldwater and McGovern campaigns show that intense primary enthusiasm is no predictor of victory in November.

Well, it is shameful that she has such a lead, if true. It is up to Trump to educate the electorate; it is up to the GOPe to get behind him. It is that later that may be is biggest challenge at the moment.
Certainly his last couple of speeches hit the right tone--he seems to be finding is voice.
He needs to keep hammering away.

Media has to supply story and narrative and the gop trump divide is the story du jour but is basically b.s. and as Scott Adams says it will be a landslide for Trump in November.
Recall after Cruz won in Wisconsin that everyone was off the Trump bandwagon without anyway looking at the primary road map which had NY, Pennsylvania and NJ coming up. Trump had it sown up before Wisconsin but we were blind to see it.
Right now it is only a negotiation as to how much Trump cedes to the Gope.

RSE: but of course, the Democrat cities are Hell's on earth. Outside of the "creative" conclaves, they are not working at all, so this is really just happy speak for a cosseted community of real and aspiring limo liberals, and is completely disconnected from reality.
As OPM dries up, as all the idiotic "policies"fail, this sort of gobbledygook with become bitter in their mouths.
Sooner or later, minorities in these blue hells will cut the upper class liberals out of the political loop and elect their own people, forge their own alliances, and create their own political machines.
When that happens and the "be happy and love everyone" sing-song will be thrust aside--and when it does we will see how racist the limo liberals really are.

I am surprised that no one brought up the parallel of Obama and Hillary's blasting Mitt for calling Benghazi a terrorist attack hours after it occurred to the way they mocked Trump's comments about Orlando. They fooled the electorate once with the playbook and the Gope has not learnt . Fortunately Trump has fought back and hopefully will remind everyone about the falsehoods this administration has foisted on the public.

Personal opinion, have no knowledge, but here goes:
I think Trump will make a sincere outreach at the convention to the black community, young people, and unions.
I have detected hints of this in his speeches and in his Twitter feed. Getting a share of those votes would do serious damage to Hillary's chances.
The country cannot continue as divided as we are. There is too much resentment and too many people sowing seeds of hatred for political advantage.
I think the parties are realigning, and it may be that this is what will prove the edge in the fall.
Posted by: Miss Marple 2 | June 26, 2016 at 12:21 PM
Simply stupid, it was a combination of a superior get out the vote effort and old fashioned Dem fraud. The Dems are better than the GOP in applying the fruits of data gathering and analysis with bare knuckles politics. Obama's lost votes from 2008 would have been greater without both the geeky and the crooked.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | June 26, 2016 at 12:22 PM
Personally, I think Trump should invest in a 50-state electronic voting jamming program, so that everyone has to vote with paper ballots like in the UK.
Posted by: Miss Marple 2 | June 26, 2016 at 12:24 PM
There was a realignment in Britain. The working people voted against their party's stated appeals. I think here, too, miners and factory workers, cops and firemen, hunters, fishermen and farmers must be grasping that the Dems have aligned with the bankers and hedge fun owners and goldman sachs against their interests.

Reuters is wishcasting, Ig. The enthusiasm on the center and right is significant. "EXCLUSIVE: Brexit ‘2nd Referendum Petition’ A 4 Chan Prank: BBC Report It As Real
By Louise Mensch | 9:38 am, June 26, 2016
The 4 Chan Bots represent the ultimate failure of the Remainstream Media.
The BBC’s desperate shilling for Remain will come under increasing scrutiny as we exclusively reveal that the supposed ‘popular petition’ for a second referendum – wholly illegal and unworkable, and unprecedented in British history – is a prank by notorious sh*tposters 4 Chan.
The BBC, the UK’s national broadcaster, gleefully reported, as real, with no basic journalistic checks, an online petition that appeared to be growing at a colossal rate. By 1:30 pm, it was one of the fastest-growing petitions in history.
So fast, in fact, that somebody should have checked for bots and scripts. The BBC is failing totally in its Charter Duty to perform basic journalistic research. "

If we are going to stop talking about polls, Ignatz, we might as well stop talking about the horse race aspects of political races entirely. Polls at this point, I acknowledge, often don't reflect the final results. But they provide more useful insights than simply relying on our own gut feelings. The early polls showing Trump was a serious player were ignored or downgraded by the likes of Nate Silver, and they look pretty foolish now for ignoring or downgrading the polls.

As we previously mentioned (several times), a Brexit result would mean the Clinton camp would have to shift their entire election campaign approach.

TRUMP: Among the victims of our late ambassador Chris Stevens, I mean she -- what she did with him was absolutely horrible. He was left helpless to die as Hillary Clinton soundly slept in her bed.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
WALLACE: Now, Mr. Speaker, you can certainly argue about how Hillary Clinton handled Benghazi. But the fact is, the attack happened at 3:00 or 4:00 here in the afternoon in Washington. And she was working late into the night.
As I say, there's plenty to attack her on. But why not stick to the facts?
GINGRICH: Well, first of all, I've had different people say different things about what she did that night and what her instructions were. Second --
WALLACE: She wasn't asleep is the point.
GINGRICH: OK. She certainly --
WALLACE: Maybe she should have been, but she wasn't.
(LAUGHTER)
GINGRICH: OK. I think that on a lot of things people can argue about that Trump says and that Hillary says, but the objective fact is there were over 600 requests for security from Libya. Now, that number came from the chairman of the intelligence committee, not from Donald Trump. They were ignored.
The fact is that in the end, there was no effective effort to respond. The fact is, she clearly lied about why it occurred. And again, you had families of the people who were killed who say she lied to them.
Rupert needs to be flooded with calls about this Fox/Snopes fact checking.

Maher actually said something like the election was a choice about putting your country ahead of hatred for Hillary, so as not to elect a horrible human being like Trump. Ok, I expect BS like that from Maher. But Steele, instead of saying "What?? You're actually claiming Hillary is a better human being than Trump??!?," responded with some mealy-mouth "You have to try to understand where Trump's appeal is coming from," blah-blay. In other words, not disputing Maher's characterization, but just trying to find excuses (as if they needed them) for people voting for Trump.

So true...I would like to know what he has done that makes him so horrible: All I can find is that he is successful, (refreshingly) blunt, not PC and not a liberal.
Maher is a beta make whinging about an alpha, and from all O can tell, a fsr more horrible buman being than Trump. THe very idea of him setting a standard for "human behavior" is risible. They make a perfect couple.

I avoid bill maher, on principle, he's the kind of supporating infection that got us to this place,
yes he hates islam, but he has displayed almost equal contempt for christianity and even judaism,
the world is absurd as the 'duck amuck' pic in the lun,

I take your reply, Porchlight, as confirmation that you don't want a pic emailed to you! :-)
I'll take a pic! I guess I'm just incredulous. Thought the bet was for the general....

This was just in the news - http://legalinsurrection.com/2016/06/judge-upholds-boys-suspension-over-pop-tart-gun/
"You may remember a story we wrote about back in 2013 which detailed the school suspension of a 7 year old boy for biting a Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun. We also covered his first appeal, which he lost.
Now a judge has upheld the suspension. Reason reports:..."
