My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.

And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:

Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.

Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.

They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.

Many people have urged that I call the Nation into a single day of special prayer. But because the road is long and the desire is great, I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.

Give us strength, too - strength in our daily tasks, to redouble the contributions we make in the physical and the material support of our armed forces.

And let our hearts be stout, to wait out the long travail, to bear sorrows that may come, to impart our courage unto our sons wheresoever they may be.

And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.

With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. I posted this after a new thread had started, so am bringing it here. Useful things here if you are afflicted with multicultural relatives.

It was a refreshingly politics-free day (until I got home and read the news, etc) at Awesome Con yesterday. Well, except for my own t-shirt ("Palpatine/Vader 2016" and one other shirt I saw ("Chewbacca/Solo 2016") and one "Make Gallifrey Great Again" sign.

No autographs for Capaldi or Coleman - the line was insanely long for them. But the event was a blast. It was wonderful to be around so many happy, excited people enjoying stuff they love. All I saw were smiles, even on the ridiculously long food lines (that was especially disorganized).

Oh, and costumes. Lots and lots of costumes.

I may bite the bullet and sign up for a table in the Artists Alley next year to sell books. I med a few other indie authors (and bought their books to show support). It's not really that expensive, and I would have done it this year except I wanted to attend the event, not man the table for 9 hours every day. Maybe if I can talk a friend into sitting with me and spelling me for an hour here and there...

Well at least James is realistic about THIS season. I project based on the statistics so far that the Yankees will lose 90 games this year. Their fans will moan and wail, but they do not know true suffering.

And it looks like this sad abberational century plus is going to come to an end with many teams having claimed an illegitimate World Series title and the championship will return to its rightful place on the north side of Chicago. One hundred and seventeen wins for the Cubs this year, or so say the soothsayers.

Appalled, it's just the opposite.

It's the Make Baseball Great Again viewpoint. Baseball was greatest in the 1950's, when the Yankees won 8 American League Pennants and 6 World Series.

That is normality. That is the world we need to return to.

Or, more broadly, 1949-63, in which they won 14 of 16 A.L. Pennants and 9 World Series.

Or if you want to go multi-generational, 1921-65, in which they won 28 of 45 A.L. Pennants and 19 World Series. Including winning 3 or more consecutive A.L. Pennants on SIX different occasions.

The world championship really DID live in the Bronx back in the golden era of baseball, so obviously baseball can only be great again when that status quo is restored.

In all (semi)seriousness, I really would like to see baseball go back to the 50's or at a minimum the late 60's in a couple of ways at least:

Abolish the designated hitter.

Get rid of the Wild Card and multiple rounds of playoffs. If there absolutely MUST be two rounds, then go back to 28 teams, 14 in each league, 2 divisions of 7 teams each, the winners play a best 3 of 5 games league championship series.

But I'd really prefer to drop down to 24 teams, 12 in each league, the winner of each league goes to the World Series.

It's tradition!

Just called Marriott 301-380-3000 to express my complete and utter disgust with the San Jose Marriott response to the woman being assaulted under the roof to the entrance to the hotel.

The male customer service representative felt it was a good time to argue with me regarding my premise that ignoring woman being assaulted as she clings to your front door afraid for her very life, is not a good thing to do.

I asked if it were his mother or sister or daughter would he feel the same way? (He did not answer.)

He said it was not Marriott's fault, the local authorities had instructed Marriott not to get involved with the demonstrations. He spoke about a Marriott that had been damaged in Baltimore by rioters.

I said we as men had a moral obligation to render assistance to any woman in distress, to not do so was contrary to the very idea of manliness.

I said Marriott had a duty of care to help the woman and as long as Marriott cannot help keep women safe, then as far as I am concerned, Marriott was not a safe place to stay.

The conversation went down from there.

What happened to the yankees?

They've got three guys in their starting lineup who should be collecting Social Security rather than playing in the major leagues every day. Yeah, Carlos Beltran is hitting, but he can no longer realistically play in the field every day, and they've already got a full-time DH with A-Rod. And Mark Texiera winds up on the disabled list anytime someone looks at him funny.

Their young prospects are not living up to the hype (their first basement of the future is out all year; their outfielder of the future can't hit AAA pitching; their ace starter of the future got demoted to AAA after a disastrous first month and a half).

The youth isn't performing, the veterans are all 90 years old and showing it. That is not a recipe for success.

I appreciate FDR's words quoted at 0954--his prayer to the nation and Almighty God that the soldiers landed in Normandy prevail. He was absolutely correct that the soldiers would be sorely tried.

Army war planners had made estimates of the number of infantry divisions they would need to train and ship to Europe to fight in WW II. They were actually a couple of divisions short in their estimate. Queen Moochie's uncle was in the last division shipped to Europe--which was the last of the trained divisions. It arrived in Europe in February 1945.

I've been reading a history of the US 30th or "Old Hickory" division. It was fed into Normandy on June 7 and 8. The infantry divisions that arrived in France in June 1944 fought through the end of the war. Like most such divisions, the 30th suffered almost 100 per cent casualties (KIA, wounded or captured as POWs) by May 1945. A few individuals made it all the way from June to May 1945--but the average combat life expectancy of a US infantryman in Northwest Europe that year was 90 days--or less. Averages are just that "average". Some replacements sent to the front from "repple depples" [Replacement Depots} died before their squad mates learned their names.

I agree with JamesD's analysis of the Damn Yankees.

I would add the following: The alleged Bronx Bombers are 14th in the American League in runs scored per game and 8th in the league in run prevention per game.

In other words, the pitching and defense are middle of the pack and the offense is just awful.

I had originally thought that they would make the wild card game again this year. At this point, I think a .500 season is an upside possibility and they are more likely in line to finish around 72-90.

They will shed some big contracts in the next couple of years (Beltran, CC, A-Rod, Tex) but until they do they are going to scuffle.

I think that everything that Paul Ryan does these days has to be viewed in the context of his desire to run for President in the future, probably in 2020.

He has sort of endorsed Trump because he does not want to appear disloyal. But he is not going to drink the Trump Kool Aid either. He wants to be able to distance himself from the worst of Trump's outbursts (like the "Mexican" judge thing), so that he cannot be saddled with a lot of Trump baggage if Trump turns out to be an unpopular loser.

I think, like all politicians, he cares more about his future than about his party's chances in this particular election. Unlike some here, Ryan definitely believes that there will be other elections after this one, even if Rodham wins this one.

Narciso, the cap (well, "luxury tax" really) is part of it. Some of it is bad luck. Greg Bird looked great last year and he'd probably be the starting first baseman this year if he hadn't injured himself and landed on the DL for this whole season.

Some of it is probably the usual New York hype about their prospects when they probably didn't merit it. The can't miss prospect they traded for Pineda two years ago, the best player in their farm system, has been a total bust with Seattle, for one example.

And what will his odds of winning be, after four more years of lawless Democrat rule?

How many millions more unassimiliated low-income immigrants will be ushered in? How many of them will be voting in 2020, thanks to Hillary's DoJ undermining Voter ID efforts, and executive orders for amnesty?

How many conservative groups and individual conservative donors will be harassed by a weaponized IRS and other federal agencies under a Hillary presidency, drying up financial support for GOP candidates?

How much will it hurt GOP campaigns if Citizens United is overturned by Hillary SC appointees, while Dem fundraising from unions continues unchallenged?

With four more years of a corrupt Democrat run Department of Education, how badly will the next crop of 18-21 year old voters be indoctrinated when it comes time for them to vote in 2020?

And even if Ryan was able to overcome that, what sort of country would he be President of?

Four more years of a continually weakened military, frayed alliances and emboldened enemies abroad.

Four more years of economic stagnation (at best), no wage growth, tax hikes that depress growth still further and drive more companies and jobs out of the country, more un and under employment and more broken, ruined neighborhoods and communities.

Four more years of social transformation, enforced by the DoJ and federal funding mandates blackmailing the states into going along.

Four more years of an unserious approach to terrorism and jihad, leading almost certainly to more horrific attacks both here and abroad.

four more years of a totally lawless executive branch, eroding trust in the rule of law still further.

And all that is a best case scenario. That's if everything goes as well as a sane person could hope under Hillary.

Yes, there will be another election in 2020. But there will be a tremendous human cost if Hillary wins. The world will not end...except for the people whose worlds DO end thanks to the policies we know she and her administration will enact. And we know there will be a lot of them.

I guess I'm kind of simple-minded (though I did get 97% on that quiz:).) Either the country is better off with Hillary as President the next four years, or with Trump. If it's Trump, as Ryan seemed to have decided, then one should do everything legal in one's power to help him win. End of story. Wishy-washy support serves no purpose whatsoever other than to increase the likelihood of a worse outcome.

Suppose that Paul Ryan honestly believes that no matter what he does, Trump is going to win or lose on his own. Suppose he further believes that some of Trump's statements, like the thing about the Mexican judge, are not good for the party and does not want to have to defend them now or in the future.

If you start with those assumptions -- and I believe that they are quite reasonable -- I think what Ryan is doing makes sense. He is supporting the party's nominee but not drinking the Kool Aid all the way to the bottom of the cup. That way, if Trump loses badly, in four years he cannot be tarred with the brush of having gone the full Trump.

Now, if you think that Paul Ryan turning into a version of our cheerleader will make Trump win when he would not otherwise, then what Ryan is doing is helping Rodham. But in all likelihood he will not have that much impact on this election. I think it is smart of him to keep his distance from Trump's less appealing outbursts while supporting him in general terms over Rodham.

Theo, Ryan needs to ask Jeb! if one can win the nomination without any actual voters voting for him. If Trump loses, his supporters are going to blame Ryan to a large extent for the loss, meaning they won't support his own run in 2020. (Trump wasn't my first choice, but I will now absolutely never, ever vote for Ryan in any future GOP primary) And the nevertrumpers will hold it against him that he endorsed Trump, even if luke-warmly.

As my WWII vet dad used to say, Ryan should have learned a long time ago "to s**t or get off the pot."

I think Ryan is in a tough spot to be sure. He is trying to steer a middle ground between the die hard Trump fans and the considerable number who are uneasy to worse about Trump. Obviously, this hurts him with people such as yourself. But I think if he went full Kool Aid on Trump and Trump loses big (not saying it is going to happen, but if) it would hurt him in the next election.

I am sure that he has done the calculations and figures that this gives him the best chance for the future. He certainly cannot please everyone and he just needs to figure out which voters he can most afford to alienate. Apparently he thinks that voters like you are it.

As far as blaming Ryan for a Trump loss, I think that is silly. Trump is either going to win or lose on his own. Paul Ryan will make at most a very marginal contribution one way or the other.
