I like the plain statues best, too, but it is probably because that is what I am used to.

The painted statues remind me of my old neighbor, who bought concrete garden statues of angels, animals, etc. and then painted them all in bright colors and gold paint.

However, I am thinking my feeling that this was in bad taste is because I have been trained to think the plain statues are what is classical and in acceptable taste.
