My only disagreement is "always interesting" in regard to Ross Douthat. I'd say the odds of anything he's got to say being interesting are probably closer to 1/100 or so.
One or two good columns a year is the best you can expect from him.
Oh, you read the New York Times as well? Gee, so do I! Did you see how horrible that Donald Trump is? He hates (name your passive/aggressive special interest group here), you know. Isn't Hillary just wonderful? She's really talking truth to power!
The most cosmopolitan people I knew were an aunt and uncle who ran a deli on 74th and 1st in Manhattan. They understood their patrons, including the bums who would try to mooch cold cuts off them, the mobsters who threw a brick through their window for not paying protection money, the international lawyer with a pretty mistress, the playboy QB who lived in the neighborhood, and the homosexuals with the exotic monkeys as pets, among others. Neither had a college education. They were both Christian Armenians. The uncle was taken care of by Kurdish Muslims after fleeing Turkey. The aunt saw relatives, after escaping the Turks, go back, only to be slaughtered. They preferred a gun for store protection over politicians' platitudes. They were cosmopolitan enough to realize that borders are essential, and they loved the US, although they didn't like parts of it such as the IRS. Most important to cosmopolitanism, they understood one needed a center of gravity in family to be able to "cosmopollinate" with the outside world.
Tom Maguire, Tom Maguire, Tom Maguire. I presume the beginning to the first sentence alone qualifies as interesting, doesn't it? Surely the sentences that follow do so but this:
NOW that populist rebellions are taking Britain out of the European Union and the Republican Party out of contention for the presidency . . . .
Yeah, that.
Interesting as hell.
Conclusory as hell.
Most importantly, it seems to be at odds with the remainder of the column. Cognitive dissonance, anyone?
Hey Ross Douthat! Yeah, you. Wade back into the water, bruh. Liberal Christianity without Christ is not the way to go (forgive me if I am presuming too much here, Ross). Come on back home. It'll be okay.

Tim Blair finds a silver lining in the cloud of the Australian Election:
The best part of this election for all genuine conservatives is that for the next few days, and possibly longer, Australia basically has no government at all. No new legislation will be passed. No new rules introduced. No new restrictions considered.
Instead, Australians will be able to sit back and enjoy the spectacle of politicians viciously attacking each other instead of attacking us.
CNN and MSNBC hope that wishing will make it so.

Just got to reading Clarice's fine Pieces. But this quote of Mukasey puzzled me: "No criminality can be charged against Mrs. Clinton in connection with any of this absent proof that she had what the law regards as a guilty state of mind...." Can someone translate that into English? What happened to "Ignorance of the law is no excuse"?

That Oren Kessler tweet is about a story from 2 July 2015. Thats when the BBC head said he thought it was rude to ISIS for David Cameron to be calling them Daesh. Back then ISIS had just done the mass murder on the Beaches of Tunisia, but they had not yet done the 2nd round of mass murders in Paris, the mass murders in Brussels, the German Christmas rape-fest, the mass murders in San Bernardino, the mass murders in Bangladesh, the mass murders in Orlando, the mass murders in Turkey, many many mass murders in Bagdad and Syria, the mini-mass murders in Australia, and the probable downing of the Egypt Air Flight.
I wonder if the BBC Head guy is still upset at David Cameron and John Kerry for calling them Daesh?
I remain livid about it of course but for different reasons.
-----------------
You know what's sad? What's sad is that I am able, just off the top of my head, to run off a list of Islamic mass murders around the world as long as my arm, and I bet everyone of us here could do it as well, yet still we've got leaders bickering over what words to call these Islamic monsters while wondering if we can win them over with "Love."
My only disagreement is it's a meritocracy.
It's a cronyocracy and merit is usually a contraindictor of cronyism.

I am always so satisfied seeing those aliens blow up. Independence Day is one of my most favorite movies.
Stephanie, I saw that said FBI guy said Flynn would be VP.
That would make me very happy.

No game, JiB. I just thought daddy had a quiet, good thing going. Hawaii is bigger than Obama and I bet Southampton is bigger than Bloomie and Slo Joe.

I read Porch's link and found it interesting, but I'm wondering why this guy would have any inside scoop about Trump and his potential appointees? Did I miss something?
The thought of Christie as AG is delicious. Can you imagine that raging bull strolling into your office with the full force of the federal gubmint behind him? Uncle!! I suspect he has a few ideas about where to find the dirtiest and most vulnerable political crooks...

Sorry that excuse isn't going to cut it.
Even if you don't know the traffic law you get a ticket.
"Ignorance of the law is no excuse is what will get her in the end.
She signed an agreement .We have her culpability in writing.

Guilty state of mind?
She did everything she could think of to cover it up forcing FBI guys to seize her illegal server.

of course, it's ridiculous, she should have been put in cuffs as soon as the interview was over, and bail assigned,

A few days old, but:

Narciso,
That Oren Kessler tweet is about a story from 2 July 2015.
