The Times helps Obama contemplate his climate change legacy and our energy future. The results are predictable - disturbing the Upper West Side readership is a no-no, so there is no mention of fracking, which has put more coal plants out of business than any Obama initiative. Also unmentioned (but you know this) is nuclear power and Obama's role, with Sen. Reid, in putting the kibosh on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
Yeah, it's all anti-science Republicans bought out by the Koch brothers. Whatever.
As a diversion, they do offer up this bit of political analysis about Obama's inability to bring along his own part when he had a mere 59 Democratic Senators and control of the House:
Eight years ago, when Mr. Obama ran for president against Senator John McCain of Arizona, both men had essentially the same position on global warming: It is caused by humans, and Congress should enact legislation to cap greenhouse gas emissions and force polluters to buy and trade permits that would slowly lower overall emissions of climate-warming gases.
But in the summer of 2010, a cap-and-trade bill Mr. Obama had tried to push through Congress failed, blocked by senators from both parties.
“One would have hoped for transformational leadership, in the way J.F.K. would have done it,” said Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany.
Hmm, when your go-to guy for a quote on JFK's leadership is coming from Germany, that might be a red flag. Kennedy's civil rights initiatives were roughly as dead in Congress as Obama's cap-and-trade, but were eventually muscled through by Lyndon Johnson.
Oh, its the Times - let their readers have their fun.

Heh, I've said for a long time that you need to worry when they quit talking about 'carbon footprint' and start investigating your 'energy footprint'.
Back when Erlich first started up his fearmongering I calculated what the theoretical maximum population of Earth would be if all of the Sun's energy that reaches the Earth were dedicated to sustaining humans. At 100W/human, the number is in the low quadrillions, approximately a million times more than are presently sustained. Of course this is theoretical, utterly impossible to attain practically, but it does illustrate that even a small increase in our use of the sun's energy, a la Norman Borlaug, would sustain many times our world's present population, and in a style to which we would all like to become accustomed.
We cannot warm the Earth enough for the consequences to become net detrimental. Our greening of the Earth is a tremendous cornucopia, perhaps already feeding a billion extra people.
Sea level rise is not accelerating; we do need to worry, and a lot, when the sea level stops rising.
There is no man-caused weather weirding. If anything, the last few decades have marked a lessening of the severity of storms, droughts, floods, tornadoes.
The idea that a warmer world has more extreme weather is intuitively easy, more energy in the system, etc. However, what determines severity is the equatorial/polar temperature gradient, and in a warming world that decreases since the tropics can't warm anymore. The ice ages were windy and dusty with horrific storms, there was a greater gradient, poles to equator.
I could go on and on and on and on, and have.

I'm getting a chuckle from all the old code talk. My first intro in 63 convinced me that my brain was wired orthogonal to whatever made code interesting or challenging.
Manny T,
I'm just to the point in the McCullough History Book where Morse is inventing his telegraphic invention and coming up with Morse code. Hope it's covered in some detail and is as interesting as the rest of the book so far. I had no idea that Morse was a painter before his Telegraph invention, and apparently so driven and possessed by it that when he lost the opportunity to be selected to paint 4 huge murals in the US Capitol in 1836 or so, he contemplated suicide, but mentions that his religious belief would not let him take that option. Fascinating.

OL,
That's good information. If Trump can bring home anything close to those numbers, he will win the election. Hillary needs to achieve Obama's record numbers with African Americans to win. I don't see that happening.
The GOPe #nevertrumpers may go Libertarian, but I'm willing to bet that more of them will come home to the 'designated' Republican candidate - Trump. As Hillary is forced out of her safe zone more and more, she'll lose ground at the margins just like she did with Bernie. My hope is that as the election date nears, voters will become more engaged, will vote against the equivalent of Obama on steroids, and thereby reject the sour grapes coalition (Romney, Bush, Cruz and McCain's surrogate, Lindsay Graham).

"President Obama flew here to swim with Hawaiian monk seals...."
Don't know what Monk Seals has to do with anything. When we used to take the kids for vacation to the recreational cabins on Barking Sands Naval Base on western Kauai, there were monk seals on the beach. Yes they were endangered and we were not supposed to disturb them of any kind, so we didn't. My daughter drew a beautiful picture of one with colored chalk that we always loved. Very cute creatures.
Point is that if Obama wanted to see Monk Seals, all he had to do was go to Kauai and he could have saved the planet another 200,000 pounds of gas in the process.

Momma tells me that she thinks Hillary intentionally bought the used Blackberry's on E-Bay so that they could not be traced. She made the point that if you buy any device from Apple or wherever brand new, that the exchange is recorded and the serial number is tied into some account that can be easily traced. Momma thinks that buying them used off of E-Bay avoided that step, and made them much harder to trace and essentially invisible---not to the bad guys, but to people in our on Government who might want at some later date to do oversight and track what she was saying on them.
Does that sound reasonable to you tech types?

Having said that, the scam has well and clearly permeated the educational system BIG TIME. I have dinner with some friends frequently in SV and interact with their son who's early twenties. He believes every lie he's been indoctrinated with. Just last week he casually mentioned how Florida will be under water due to rising sea levels. I asked him just when this would happen. Didn't know but didn't care. I laughed and said get back to me when real estate anywhere on the coast in that state starts plummeting in value due to rising seas.

If Trump can bring home anything close to those numbers, he will win the election.
In all modesty I predicted early in the year, or maybe late last year, that Trump would do better than people thought among blacks. That was entirely based on a random encounter on a subway in the Bronx, overhearing a couple of 20-something black dudes talking about Trump. The fact that they were talking about him at all seemed to me a big deal (as opposed to talking about Lebron or Dr Dre), and the fact that their tone was neutral to positive--like they might sound if talking about one of those other guys--even more so.
Yeah, it was a sample of two, but it resonated with me.

Kim,
I finished reading Tom Wolfe's latest, "The Kingdom of Speech", last night. I had never read anything of his and was hoping it would be good. It is savagely anti-Darwin in an ad hominem way. Obviously I am biased towards my man Chuck as you guys know, and I can take plenty of criticism toward him without batting an eye, but I was utterly disgusted at the straw men he erected and the disingenuous cheap shots he took in this sneering screed towards Chuck. A colossal mess of a book IMHO and without question I am done with ever reading anything again from Tom Wolfe.
Whether you like or dislike Darwin, my only recommendation is that if you do decide to read this book, please do not pay for it. Instead simply get it out from the Library or via free Kindle downloading etc. What a disappointment and what a shame he did not or could not make his arguments, whatever they were, without resorting to so many pages of hate filled diatribes.
Oh well, every once in a while it's probably good to read a terrible book in order to appreciate how wonderful it is to have really excellent reads like David McCullough's at hand to enjoy and learn from.

Clothes!
When this divorce mess started 2 years ago, (and I am STILL not divorced due to evil soon-to-be-ex stalling now that we are on to his secret bank accounts) I had my sister come over and help me clean out my walk-in closet.
I had gobs of expensive clothing left from when I worked for an up scale furniture store back in the NINETIES! I just couldn't make myself get rid of them because they had been expensive.
So I got my sister, who works in fashion, to come over and advise me. General culling of stuff I hadn't worn in years got rid of 7 large trash bags full of clothing. SEVEN!
I am working on this again, as my house is much smaller and I have a small closet. Now I am getting rid of most of my dress clothes, keeping only one summer and winter dress outfits for weddings or funerals. I do not attend ritzy parties so don't need them. I will probably take another 4 bags out of there today.

d, of course I'm also a fan of Chuckie, but I am amused that the so far inexplicable things, like the clotting cascade and motility, are faithfully assumed to have come through selection. I suspect the error is in not understanding the value of those two, in preserving the internal milieu and in changing the external milieu, and neglecting the immense amount of time over which selection occurs.
The biochemistry convinces me, though nothing is excluded in the great realm of philosophy, that Darwinian natural selection, ie evolution, has determined our present biome. I've just had a recent understanding of the foundational role of RNA which was once the mainstay of genetic information storage and of enzymatic action. Genetic information storage has been delegated to DNA and enzymatic action to proteins. All tres interessant.
Too bad I can't read anything but internet commentary and books printed before 1980.
Posted by: One small cripple for the great challenge. | September 08, 2016 at 02:17 PM
daddy,
Kudos to you for finishing a book you didn't like and for reviewing it honestly.
But I'll be candid. I'm a Tom Wolfe fan. I don't have any personal opinions about Darwin.
However, the fact that someone on Wolfe's level published an anti-Darwin book in 2016 makes me want to go out and pay full price for it right now.
Why? Because you're not allowed to write anti-Darwin books in 2016, and you're certainly not allowed to publish them. The leftists that run publishing and all the other cultural institutions won't permit it. Because to be anti-Darwin, in their eyes, is to be among the most knuckle-dragging, Bible-spanking, unevolved Neanderthals alive.
So if Wolfe has managed to pull this off - and especially considering the man is getting up there in years and this could be his last book - I must support it.
I hope you'll consider reading another of his works someday. He was the original counter-countercultural icon. He saw the preening moral idiots of his time for what they were, early on, and skewered them joyfully, and resisted their attempts to flatter him into becoming like them. And he has remained the same ever since. He's one of the most unlikeliest conservatives alive, and he's a mensch.

One of the arguments the professional declutterers on youtube say, to get people to part with things that were costly (but are not currently serving any purpose in our lives), is that keeping the object doesn't bring the money back.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/294914-powell-told-clinton-how-to-bypass-state-security-measures
So this makes it ok for Hillary? I suppose if there were surveillance video of her shooting Vince Foster that would be ok because Aaron Burr killed Hamilton?
Important differences:
1. Everyone knows if you don't want a record you use the phone or in-person conversations. If that's all she'd done, this would be a non-issue.
2. Powell also used some personal e-mail. Hillary *only* used personal e-mail.
3. Powell didn't delete his personal e-mail, and didn't have his own server, so therefore had no way to wipe the servers had he been subpoenaed (and was aware of this).
4. Powell isn't running for President.
MSM take-away: Powell did the same thing, Hillary is just being unfairly singled out.

A colossal mess of a book IMHO and without question I am done with ever reading anything again from Tom Wolfe.
I wouldn't judge Wolfe on this. Try "The Right Stuff." All the non-fiction I've read by him has been great, and the fiction at least good. Though if you were a big fan of modern art you might not like "The Painted Word," or if you love Bauhaus architecture "From Bauhaus to Our House" might make you mad as hell.

Don't write what you can speak.
Don't speak on the phone if you can speak in person.
Don't speak in person if you can gesture.

I suppose if there were surveillance video of her shooting Vince Foster that would be ok because Aaron Burr killed Hamilton?
jimmyk,
That's their rationale in a nutshell.

Janet, that is some guy NBC selected to ask Trump a question last night.

Porch, Thanks for your Tom Wolfe comment. Appreciated.
It's too bad I had not read anything else from Wolfe so I could have been impressed by him, but as I said above, he lost me early on and just kept digging. Oh well. 2nd Half of the book is hammering Noam Chomsky. It's great to be able here at Salon JOM to have different opinions about this or that etc and still be good buddies:) His anti-Darwin schtick struck me, as someone who knows Darwin about as well as you can from reading his Beagle Diaries and Letters Home etc, like Kevin Williamson's disingenuousness in going after Trump supporters and that small town America city he wanted to die.
If you do read it I'd be interested in your opinion.

Back when the baseball players union was suing the owners for collusion, the owners began making notes on napkins during some meetings, because napkins couldn't be subpoenaed.

Two guys busted for dumpster diving their way into Clapper's accounts. Well, unspecified social engineering. But they did hack him into the stone age.

I have no reason to believe Darwin wasn't a careful classifying critter and a key player in the development of evolutionary biology. What frosts me is the proposition that evolutionary biology undercuts monotheism. Gödel's incompleteness theorems should have blown that claim to bits for once and for all.

Wow. Typepad automatically put the umlaut thingie over the o in Gödel. More amazing than Darwin's studies. :-))

from the heavy link - After a protest outside of Trump Tower -
"“Then, reached by phone after the event, McCoy acknowledged that the Clinton campaign organized the conference call bringing together possible attendees to the protest,” the Daily Beast reported.
McCoy appeared on CNN and said, however, he was not working for the Clinton campaign:"

"Wall Off Trump"?
As political slogans go, do they get any lamer?
Lean forward[and cough]?
Stronger...together?
OK, I guess they do.

Thanks for the link TC. Will get to it when I wake up later. Good night for a couple hours.
BTW, If I didn't make myself clear, I wasn't upset about the disbelief or disagreement with anything Darwin came up with, whether Geology, Botany, Evolution, Sexual Selection, Coral Reefs, Worms, Earthquakes, Plate Tectonics, Venus Fly Traps, Megatherium Fossils, Volcano's, or Darwin's 10 years devoted to becoming the worlds expert on Barnacles. What repulsed me was the unnecessary over the top ad hominem animus aimed at what I consider straw man caricatures of Charles Darwin. It felt like I was reading about a slimy guy with the character of Anthony Weiner or Bill Clinton, but certainly not Charles Darwin.

McCoy appeared on CNN and said, however, he was not working for the Clinton campaign:"
No...he was just on a conference call with them organizing a protest.
