It was har de har day at the Times as some hayseed libertarian humiliated himself before a national radio audience:
‘What Is Aleppo?’ Gary Johnson Asks, in an Interview Stumble
Gary Johnson, the former New Mexico governor and Libertarian Party presidential nominee, revealed a surprising lack of foreign policy knowledge on Thursday that could rock his insurgent candidacy when he could not answer a basic question about the crisis in Aleppo, Syria.
“What is Aleppo?” Mr. Johnson said when asked on MSNBC how, as president, he would address the refugee crisis in the war-torn Syrian city.
Well, yes, he shoulda known, as all regular Times readers do. But not all Times writers and editors! Check this Correction-palooza:.

Yet another Beasts medical question. I got two spider bites on my forearm last night. I initially thought they were mosquito bites, but they didn't itch. Now, twenty hours later, one of them is encircled by a slight reddening about the diameter of a dime. So, is this something that I need to go to the Doc-in-a-Box for? If so, can it wait until after my date tonight? I'm being serious. Much thanks!

From the end of the last thread:
That instantly struck me because as I recall from last week, FOX's Chris Wallace very specifically said his job as moderator was to not challenge any of the lies that came out of the mouths of the Candidates. Instead he said his job was to ask questions and get them to say whatever, and it was our job to then determine if they were lying or telling the truth.
I actually prefer that to these grandstanding lefty "moderators" pulling a Candy Crowley as if they have some special pathway to Truth, like all those phony "fact checkers" at WaPo and Snopes. The more robot-like and passive the moderator the better, since the aggressive moderators are invariable acting on behalf of the Democrats. In fact, as I've said before, there doesn't need to be a moderator at all, just someone to read questions and a timer to cut people off.
Posted by: jimmyk | September 09, 2016 at 05:11 PM
Common question, Beasts. The ticks you and I think about are Dog Ticks which are hard to miss. The ticks we worry about are Deer Ticks and they are literally about the size of a grain of sand and are really hard to find.
Nobody leaves Nantucket after visiting us without the lecture to look for a circular rash, a fever, or any flu like symptoms during the week after they leave us. Any of those and we automatically start the antibiotic pills. There is so much of that sort of thing here, we never wait for the blood test results.
Posted by: Old Lurker | September 09, 2016 at 05:15 PM
Trump should offer to dump Wallace in exchange for his getting to dump the other two. How's that for art of the deal?
Posted by: Old Lurker | September 09, 2016 at 05:18 PM
Don't know about you boys down south, but up here in the north east Beasts, that would be a mandatory Lyme Disease alert.
For sure, and you can get Lyme outside the NE. 20 hours seems a bit too soon for a tick bite--usually takes a week or two (I believe) for symptoms to show, and definitely for any tests to be informative, but you should consider going to a doctor. It's not an emergency, but you'd want to go on antibiotics within a couple of weeks if they suspect Lyme.
Posted by: jimmyk | September 09, 2016 at 05:20 PM
Besides Beasts, given my fantasy imagination of your love life, periodic rounds of pills probably are not a bad idea, right?
Posted by: Old Lurker | September 09, 2016 at 05:20 PM
And Beasts, to answer your other question: "wouldn't I have seen a tick on me?" Maybe since it was your arm, but not necessarily. I had Lyme last year and never saw a tick, but the bite was on my back.
Posted by: jimmyk | September 09, 2016 at 05:23 PM
Jimmy is right, Beasts, I looked at the "Lyme Card" posted in the pantry and it says the rash, IF appears at all (sometimes there is no rash or it is hidden in the hair), is seen between 3 and 30 days after the bite, so 20 hours is probably too soon.
Posted by: Old Lurker | September 09, 2016 at 05:24 PM
Be nice, OL!! ;)
But seriously, there were a bunch of little critters about the size of a grain of rice all over my boat last night and this morning. Crap. I guess I'll see what the bites look like in the morning. And I guess I won't be taking her for a boat ride tonight. Sheesh. Hallmark probably doesn't make a 'Sorry I gave you Lyme Disease." card...

I am going to give a bit of a break to Gary Johnson and here is why. In my job I am required to listen intently and to speak distinctly because misunderstanding is deadly in my job. I listen hard and speak loud and distinctly, especially when dealing with the Brits or the French or the Germans or the Chinese or anyone else outside of the states because misunderstanding will kill.
So that said, I am not a fan of slovenly, indistinct language if someone is trying hard to be understood. What Barnicle did, if you listen to him, is ask quite indistinctly, in very much the same tone as the dick Charlie Gibson asked Palin about "The Bush Doctrine," something, something, Aleppo, not "What would you do about the situation in Aleppo,Syria?" so that there was no possible confusion about what the question was about. Barnicle was inviting misunderstanding. Simply saying Aleppo, and not saying it very distinctly or as if he gave a damn about it, Barnicle scored one for the interviewer by making Johnson looked stupid. If Barnicle had asked "What would you do about the situation in Aleppo, Syria?" and asked it like he meant it, Johnson would not have been intentionally placed in the position of being a scrambling dum ass, but would have known instantly what the question was and could have answered accordingly.
So tho' Johnson came off looking stupid, I blame Barnicle. He is, in my view, another "gotcha'" media hack, and he deserves a blanket party. If he was an air traffic controller or my co-pilot I would give him max s%^* for being such a verbally lazy f#%^, and intentionally so.
Geez, I sure am ornery lately😁

No, you're not, daddy. You're right. The question was softly spoken and the look on Barnicle's face was just like the spider's as he invited the fly in to tea.
Johnson probably should have said something like, "In what respect," to get Barnicle to be more forthcoming. I'm sure he won't make that same mistake again.

So the French have no problem using the word "Islam" when demanding that their citizens welcome and embrace "Islam," but they're not allowed to use the word "Islam" when those very same Islams they have to welcome and embrace engage in rampant murder and terrorism fueled by...you guessed it, "Islam."

Dan Balz of the Washington Post was on Charlie Rose tonight touting a poll recently conducted by the Post with SurveyMonkey. The survey which is referred to as "massive," "expansive" and a "rare opportunity for voters to express their opinions" was focused on "voter attitudes" in the 2016 election (e.g. "Where do you stand on current events?").

According to Balz, Trump is not doing well in traditional Republican strongholds like Arizona and Texas (?). Clinton is doing well with the usual suspects as well as white college educated voters - especially white college educated females.
The massive survey highlights a critical weakness in Trump’s candidacy — an unprecedented deficit for a Republican among college-educated white voters, especially women. White college graduates have been loyal Republican voters in recent elections, but Trump is behind Clinton with this group across much of the country, including in some solidly red states.
Clinton also holds a slim lead in the electoral college according to Balz. According to the Post, this election is redrawing the traditional red and blue lines in the country. The poll samples varied from 500 to 5,000. The methodology was as follows:
"[it was] conducted online as part of SurveyMonkey’s 2016 Election Tracking project, which recruits respondents from the large number people who take polls on the company’s do-it-yourself survey platform, roughly three million each day....From Aug. 9 to Sept. 1, the survey asked the sample of 74,886 registered voters about their presidential support, including between 546 and 5,147 respondents in each state.
I haven't gone into the wording of the poll questions yet. Balz, the Post and Charlie Rose seemed excited by these results on-line from "registered" voters. They also believe that 3rd or no-party candidates might do well.
