I agree, narciso. That whole part of the book had a "been there, done that" feel to it. It fit, though and provided a predicate for the "revanchists" referred to in the article who seem to populate that area of the world.
but it's the only way, the audience that reads flathead, (its suggested he's the columnist that saladin is targeting) since kristol no longer works for the times, and scott shane and joby warrick, would ever consider an alternate reality,

I suppose if one stays in that business long enough there are bound to be physical and mental consequences.
Re: Gulf War I & II
There are those who say we should have left well enough alone with Saddam running Iraq and keeping the Iranians in check. Everything would be lovely if only we hadn't invaded Iraq after 9/11.
Tampering with the Middle East has always been tricky. Obama and Clinton made the situation much worse. No matter what Obama says, he and the red witch let loose a problem that will not stay contained.
In retrospect, the purge may not have been the best idea in the world, but as kyle orton, who isn't often published in major publications, because breaks all the rice bowls at any one time, the baathists were not the great secular guardians ofthe regime, by 2003, they were making alliances with the stronger horses, who were the salafi, and they in turn worked with hamas and al aqsa, like saladin did, with hezbollah and the egyptian jihadists, this is how they were able to gin up an insurgency in weeks,
Some say, the revelation about philby unhinged him, but even robert littell floats the notion, in a backhanded way, that angleton was right, I guess churchill's aphorism about 'a mystery, wrapped inside a riddle, inside an enigma' isn't just about russia,

Barbara, the influence peddling is OBVIOUS. If everyday American citizens see how OBVIOUS it is, how on EARTH can all of our CREDENTIALED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS NOT SEE IT. Hurricanes have always existed, and LIBTARDS have screeeeeeeeched like silly bitches that HURRICANES would be BEEEEEEEGER, MORE DESTRUCTIVE and MORE FREQUENT.
Wrong ALL ALONG.
MM-my understanding is that is on top of coming in at high tide. From watching dennis come in in 2005 and other tropical storms, my greatest surprise is that the waves come in with such momentum that they then go vertical, shearing the supposedly solid natural dunes of 30 feet or so.
Dennis took the crests all along 30-A and moved back about five feet. It really gave a sense for how repeated storms could change a coastline, but as others have noted it had been a decade since one hit.
I guess ol is shuttering up at least a bit. Red had a friend want her to come visit, but she looked into the logistics of traveling over Labor Day weekend and then trying to get back for a tuesday morning meeting. She stayed home.
This is not about a hurricane, We'll be honest, friends, we're PANICKING. Dems worried about turnout & polls. I expect more lawsuits on early voting hours and voter ID as this sinks in.
Scary enough for me to think about testing the diving boards on the Ledge:
The gist is, and all my Dem friends here on Nantucket take it as gospel, that Hillary has an iron clad in the bag firewall of 249 Electoral Votes so she only needs one or two more states to cinch the election. Since that is easy-peasy for her, they see a landslide for her.
I have heard that for months from all sorts, including Dana Perino who is just SO concerned that we are getting our hopes up for nought.
Well, maybe so. And maybe they are way over confident.
I was a registered democrat who voted for Jimmy Carter. After 4 years of Carter misery and alternately being disgusted and then trying to go back to being a loyal democrat (my dad and mom were yellow dogs) I threw in the towel in the summer of 1980 and decided to vote for Reagan.
My exact thought (I remember this like yesterday) was "Reagan can't be any worse, and he at least won't be embarrassing." (I did not know much about him other than he wasn't Jimmy Carter, he spoke well, and his wife dressed nicely. (I didn't follow politics that much as my children were small.)
The short answer is that the polls and conventional wisdom pundits just really do not know. If Hillary loses 25% of the black vote, she loses. If the democrats in the rust belt throw in the towel like I did, she loses. If we win on new voters, she loses.
I don't think any other candidate would have had a shot. Not Cruz, not Jeb, not any of them. All would have been destroyed by the attack ads after the convention. Trump was not, and is remaining a strong contender.
You also have to remember that your democrat friends here this type of stuff from the DNC and the Clinton campaign because they want to keep the money flowing. If dem voters think she might lose, they might be inclined not to donate.
This would be analagous to the call I got from the RNC on election day, 2012, when I was asked todonate last minute money to help get out the vote because it was looking like a landslide and Minnesota was in play. Of course, as we know, that was a lie and they were just trying to vacuuum up whatever money they could get before the disaster.
This is why I do not donate to the RNC, ever. My sole contribution this cycle was $25 to Donald Trump on his web site. That was really money I couldn't afford, but I wanted to help out a bit.
If Hillary steals this election, the Trump people aren't going away. Their anger will be volcanic, and the GOPe will feel their wrath as well as the dems.
Thanks for that link. Nieto's spokesman confirmed Trump's statement there was no discussion of payment for the wall. Nieto said "we're not paying for it," Trump didn't respond, therefore no discussion. MSM doesn't understand what words mean and so thinks "mention"="discuss."
My secret dream remains a Trump landslide and an American Renewal.
I sailed yesterday with a guy who was so certain of a Clinton Landslide that I almost jumped ship to swim home, not caring that there was a Great White in the 'hood. Since my host is "connected", it was depressing I must admit.
Hillary's campaign people are probably afraid to tell her anything other than she's got the election in the bag, for fear of getting clonked in the head by a lamp. Too bad there isn't a feminine version of those "Hitler finds out about..." parodies.
OL, I can understand being depressed if the source is "connected." But the top 5 DNC people have now resigned and Brazile is reportedly spending all her time reassuring nervous donors. Hillary is literally doing nothing but fundraisers and debate prep while Trump dominates every news cycle that isn't dominated by fresh Clinton scandals. And he's gaining on her in both state and national polling.
Why not spread a few comforting rumors to the wealthy Dem gentry that it's in the bag?
Well, if she does win it is profound mark of just how corrupt we have become--corrupt in the sense of a tyrannical, self serving political machine, but also in the sense of broad moral corruption.
Hillary is running what to me is absolutely the worst campaign I have ever seen. It is in a real sense not a campaign at all. She has lately put out what for any other person would be consider downright looney bit of paranoia: Trump is in league with Putin to hack her, that absolutely bizarre "Alt Right" speech, and the strange and almost indecipherable speech about "American Exceptionalism". She now is claiming that hacks on email are acts of war and she will respond accordingly. She has given but one press conference in 200+ days and does not answer questions but instead hands out candy. She looks absolutely dreadful, and yet no one is supposed to notice. On top of all of this is the snotty air about her that she is entitled to be POTUS so can we just get on with the theater so that she can claim her right to rule us. All in all, it is a pathetic and truly bizarre campaign.
It appears to me that she is relying on the MSM, voter fraud and indoctrinated numbskulls (some, evidently, quite well off) to put her over the top, and this despite the sort of open corruption that would not only throw anyone else out of politics but at the very least land them in front of a judge. OL's gilded Liberal friends are literally out of their minds not to see this.
If she does get in it will be a watershed in American History.
We at the very least see two things: 1) half of the nation, and I do mean half, will lose all faith in its institution, public and private, and 2) we will see the US government openly come out against the population as an oppressive and tyrannical force.
"I sailed yesterday with a guy who was so certain of a Clinton Landslide that I almost jumped ship to swim home, not caring that there was a Great White in the 'hood. Since my host is "connected", it was depressing I must admit."
I have that sensation all the time--not out sailing, of course, but the sense that anything would be better than another second of listening to this idiocy. Better to hop out of a moving car in the middle of a bridge than take another second.
Squaredance, "It is in a real sense not a campaign at all."
I was thinking that she is running a Soviet style campaign where she knows the outcome so why bother getting out of bed...or a N Korean thing where she assumes 105% of the vote...
The great fear we share, of course, is that that might be exactly where we have arrived without knowing it. This election will answer that question.
Why not spread a few comforting rumors to the wealthy Dem gentry that it's in the bag?
So which is the better strategy, trying to make the Dem operatives complacent, or the donors nervous? It would be great to see the donor rats fleeing the sinking ship, but that is probably a fantasy.
Happy Birthday Frederick.
Sorry I missed him yesterday.
I concur Potch.
After I saw that Vitginia poll I knew the media has been lying all along.
Hil is raising money because blowing through 100 million has gotten her to a tie with Trump.
She is going to need every penny.
OL, it's good to start with the presumption that it's tough to beat an incumbent, and tough for a party to stay in power after two terms of a not wildly popular president. That gives some ground for hope this time around.
You know if she really does win in a landslide, it will be the political end-of-a-nation equivalence of that old line about going bankrupt being "slow at first and then all at once".
It is even worse than a Soviet "campaign"--at least they had to fear their peers in the state apparatus. I can tell you that one could not escape the droning broadcasts of ritualized speeches.
As to arriving there, well in a way it is worse. For a great many Americans it is the case that one cannot freely speak their mind, and this is enforced not by Secret Police but almost solely by their fellow citizens acting in "free will". That was not the case in Russia, at least not after the war. All the fear came from the State apparatus.
People do not seem to realize that in some very real way the USA has become more tyrannical than the USSR was in the daily lives of regular people. It is more subtle, and the cost is not an actual gulag, at least not yet, but the intrusions into our private lives are deep indeed. Moreover, the nature of what they are pushing against us is far beyond what the Soviets ever tried. Criminalizing Bakers for not serving homosexuals, trannies in the military, the notion that it is OK for a football player to wear socks like that but another team cannot put logos on their helmets to support cop. The Soviets would not have dared to try that, and indeed would not have wanted too. They pushed that sort of nonsense in the West, but never at home.
I have concluded that if my secret dream of a Trump victory comes to be, I assume all of my Dem friends' heads will explode as they die of strokes. I mentally reviewed the list of said friends and decided I will not miss them at all.
SqD: "For a great many Americans it is the case that one cannot freely speak their mind, and this is enforced not by Secret Police but almost solely by their fellow citizens acting in "free will"."
And in that, the historical parallel is the French Revolution. All that is missing is the mass willingness to simply exterminate those with whom the mob disagrees and the willingness to take all their assets as the trundle down the lane. And the seeds of both have been sown, you must admit.
Frederick thanks all for the best birthday wishes.
Last night we went to Yappy Hour at the Southampton HIstorical Museum. Beth Stern (Howard's squeeze) was hosting our annual BYOD (bring your own dog) cocktail party. Frederick brought his 3 beagles and had a caricature done of them:)
Oh, JIB - I LOVE beagles. We shared 16 years with our girl Nacho and although she passed in 2007, my heart still aches each night when I go to bed just thinking about her. Frederick's Bandit looks just like our Nacho. We can't bring ourselves to get another dog especially now that my children are grown and the pup would be home all day alone. The picture of your three little beauties made my day - thanks so much!
I think this paragraph pretty well sums everything up perfectly.
JIB - great caricature of the beagles! I put my foster bluetick on an airplane this morning - she's flying from Atlanta to her new adoptive home in Lincoln, Nebraska. I had her for six months and miss her already.
The only solution = another foster! A very gray day here in Georgia - has RG checked in with anyone yet? I hope all is well with him. My friend just returned from helping with the flooding victims in LA. She posted such heart-breaking photos. She said people were reluctant to let go of their things, even though they were clearly ruined and covered in mold and mildew. I cannot imagine such a loss.
We have much to be thankful for and these disasters put things in perspective, don't they?
So which is the better strategy, trying to make the Dem operatives complacent, or the donors nervous?
I don't think Hillary actually has a money problem. She has shown for eons that Clintons can funnel money wherever they want whenever they want. That's part of the problem.
I think Brazile and the fundraisers Hillary is doing *are* part of the "calming the nerves" strategy among the Dem elite. They're not calming donor nerves because they need more money, but because the "nerves" are over the obvious disaster of a campaign, and they want the rumors to be positive rather than negative.
What one thinks about The Hill's campaign depends on one's view of The Hill as a whole and her health. I happen to have concluded that The Hill is corrupt virtually beyond comprehension, and compromised to Val and Xi also beyond comprehension. In addition, although I don't think she has seen the Grim Reaper yet, I think the state of her health is precarious. In light of this, I think her handlers' run out the clock campaign has been brilliant.
I blame Hillary. She blames Trump....Trump takes credit.

I agree, narciso. That whole part of the book had a "been there, done that" feel to it. It fit, though and provided a predicate for the "revanchists" referred to in the article who seem to populate that area of the world.

Shoot me now.

Old Lurker,
I have heard that for months from all sorts, including Dana Perino who is just SO concerned that we are getting our hopes up for nought.
I still think Trump will win.

Hillary's campaign people are probably afraid to tell her anything other than she's got the election in the bag, for fear of getting clonked in the head by a lamp. Too bad there isn't a feminine version of those "Hitler finds out about..." parodies.

Posted by: Buckeye | September 02, 2016 at 09:27 AM
OL, I can understand being depressed if the source is "connected." But the top 5 DNC people have now resigned and Brazile is reportedly spending all her time reassuring nervous donors. Hillary is literally doing nothing but fundraisers and debate prep while Trump dominates every news cycle that isn't dominated by fresh Clinton scandals. And he's gaining on her in both state and national polling.
Why not spread a few comforting rumors to the wealthy Dem gentry that it's in the bag?
Posted by: Porchlight | September 02, 2016 at 09:28 AM
Push may just come to shove.

OL, it's good to start with the presumption that it's tough to beat an incumbent, and tough for a party to stay in power after two terms of a not wildly popular president. That gives some ground for hope this time around.

Posted by: squaredance | September 02, 2016 at 09:57 AM
