My take is that Clinton didn't even have to offer Machado real money.

She was offered citizenship instead.

Buckeye

The people that are hung up on what Trump thinks of overweight women should instead be worried about what Clinton thinks of them.

From James D comment that "leftists think all wealth comes from government". I would add one way or another, I.e. The Clintons sell future access to make hundreds of millions. The Sanders sell a dream of free stuff for every one to get another fancy house. How many fancy houses does one family need?

Wasnt that a profiled covert immigration 'rock star' 🌠 program? This is why we have all this war planning and wars and discriminatory lock step compliance and perceptions. Trump needles the propganda media like this. Obviously a russian chinese foreigner anti homeland spy terrorist trainor who will fire all government employees and ruin military. Wait, didnt clinton and obambi already do this secretly, but obviously americans agree with the profound righteousness...

But blackmailing the enemies of the state leveraging covert cia programs is so much more profitable. So, who do they pay off now? If they stop paying americans start coups and wars and unrest....🎫

This is one of those odd reads I occasionally (and surprisingly) run into from Wretchard or Spengler. An acceptance, quite casually, of things *not* demonstrated about some American topic. "To a British audience, this sounds rather quaint." Yeah, sweetheart, I bet it does.

anonamom; formerly adorable, now deplorable

Thanks porch. Glad he's got that wiggle room you made happen.

Where's maryrose, CH and Buckeye? It's a lock that Injuns and Red Sucks will battle in the second round of the MLB baseball playoffs. If I bet another tat on the outcome, what are you betting? :-)

anonamom; formerly adorable, now deplorable

RG, that is an eye-opening article!

To a British audience, this sounds rather quaint. We may have our own concerns about benefit dependency and the moral hazard of creating a lifestyle in which welfare pays better than work but the debate about this is within the parameters of acceptable political possibilities. Those on the Left present a case for comprehensive welfare provision designed to eliminate inequalities between the employed and unemployed, which is widely accepted in the mainstream discourse. If anything, it is the critics of such policies who are on the defensive: the argument that you should always be better off in work than living on benefits is a radical and contentious departure from received opinion. In the US, this is certainly not the case. For many of the people we met, it was deeply shocking (and positively wicked) that in many states of the Union it was entirely possible to earn more on welfare than in a paying job, and that work had become optional to an acceptable adult life.

I had NO idea that it was entirely acceptable to think being on the dole should be equivalent to working a full time job in the minds of the English. Though I guess calling it "eliminating inequalities between the employed and unemployed" somehow dressed up "money for nothing and chicks for free."

Thomas Collins

The 9:20 AM post by anonamom shows why Destiny and Tatiana should rule the world. If their policies were implemented, chicks would never be for free!

Moving away from whimsy for a moment, it looks as if the Clinton/Obama Russian reset isn't working so well for Aleppo's residents.

Great Pieces, clarice; how appropriate that some clueless dunce from State is named Blinken to go along with other sleepy time clowns, Winken and Nod, reporting to Lurch. And again Jeh Johnson needs to be kicked in the nuts until he passes out and then kicked out of the country to one of the third world shitholes he admires because fuck him.

I'm not betting against a team with a roided up POS like Big Papi because MLB refuses to reject chemical enhancement i.e. cheating. Plus the Indians have become the walking wounded.

Thomas Collins

I subscribe to the Jose Canseco view that most players cheat, CH, so I don't get all exercised about Ortiz (perhaps he is better at covering up his juicing, but there are plenty of players at a Methuselah type age who couldn't do what he is doing at the end of a career). Although I will be rooting for the Flops, I wouldn't be at all all teary about Terry Francona getting his revenge on Werner and Henry.

Lisa Booth: Trump's tax situation won't hurt him. Neither candidate is "of the people". Michael Needham: there's plenty of tax revenue that is spent foolishly by the Feds. Julie Pace: Trump's argument isn't bad but he should've been more transparent early. Bob Woodward: Short Circuit is way too smug and has no humility and should dial it back. Booth: Curb Dive is the status quo in a change election. Trump didn't do himself any favors on temperment in the debate and should stop reacting to Rodham and go after her.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

MeAgain?

Captain Hate

Needham: emails can still be a major issue if Trump hammers it. Booth: both candidates need to be equally scrutinized and Rodham's attacks on Slick's victims belies her advocacy but Trump might not be the best messenger. Woodward: Trump should've been more transparent as should Curb Dive. Both candidates run their own shows. Rodham's email situation is terrible. Needham: Trump at his best addresses issues that resonate with people. Pace: Trump now has a team that focuses him but he can be distracted. The race has been steady for months and Trump is not currently doing what he has to to win. Needham: Trump can still win if he concentrates on the right issues. Woodward: the voters want honesty and the next debates are huge.

The idea that being on the dole is an acceptable (maybe even praiseworthy) alternative to work is sadly widespread here, too.

You can trace so many of today's problems back to the encouragement of that idea (and the idea that having kids out of wedlock, often by multiple partners, is OK; and the idea that drug use is A-OK too).

Thanks, progs. Thanks ever so much.

that is the type of thing that gets through the media fog. It is something that everyone can understand ... yeah, those two grifters looted the White House before they left.

Even the media had a hard time covering for that bit of grossness.

Janet S.

a better article on O'Donnell - http://dailycaller.com/2014/02/28/christine-odonnells-irs-case-reveals-more-than-just-a-smidgen-of-corruption/

"The IRS then wrongly attached an $11,744 tax lien to a property O’Donnell no longer owned, and political opponents speciously used the after-the-fact lien to damage O’Donnell’s standing and manufacture a tax scandal just as she launched her Senate campaign.

On top of the improper lien and the illegal access of her personal tax records, the IRS relentlessly audited and nit-picked O’Donnell’s personal finances."

Beasts,

I agree. Some compelling golf and I am surprised that they actually scheduled a Ryder Cup in Minnesota end or September first of October.

I remember one year in the Upper Peninsula we had snow (lots of it) around September 25th. But then we have had more global warming since then so No surprise that the gods of golf would understand all that dynamic. Looking forward to the next Cup in Paris where the spectator's wear high heels around the courses. Your kind of sporting event:)

James D

I'd sort of like to hear Trump or a surrogate say re: the NYT tax story:

"Clearly the documents the Times received are fake. We all know that the IRS is completely honest and above-board and every employee there is a law-abiding professional. And we all know that the federal government guards the private information and documents of every citizen zealously. So obviously there is no way anyone could possibly have gotten hold of my tax returns."

that O'Donnell case should have been the red flag ... it was the IRS making up fake liens and sending information to the so called conservative press. No a single person that was involved in that lost their job or went to jail (both possibilities if I understand the law correctly).

The NYT quotes some professor:

Mr. Rosenfeld offered this description of what he would advise a client who came to him with a tax return like Mr. Trump’s: “Do you realize you can create $916 million in income without paying a nickel in taxes?”

So he would advise a client to lose $916 million so as not to pay taxes in subsequent years? He doesn't sound very bright. The entire focus of the story is the supposed "benefit" from the tax system, simply from the fact that you don't have to pay income taxes if you don't have any income. I do wish Trump in his response would also say something like: "Entrepreneurs take risks, and sometimes those risks pay off, resulting in huge benefits for workers, investors, and in lots of tax revenues. And sometimes they do not, and there are losses, such as those experienced by the NY Times Corporation this year. The NY Times deducts those losses from any profits, as did I. People who bought NYT stock in 2004 at $45 have suffered greatly now that it is down to about $11. They have my sympathies. But I don't expect the NYT to pay more taxes than it owes, and I'm puzzled as to why they think I should."
