Appreciate that, Porch.

James D

Appalled, that approach is a reaction to the GOP punching back on nothing at all.

I've said this many times before, but it's still true. Had the GOP shown any backbone, had they drawn a little blood against Obama and the Dems over the last 8 years, things might look very different now. And there would likely be a different GOP nominee running against Hillary today.

When you ignore people's wishes, when you don't listen to them, when you allow the other side to attack them and screw them over, time and time again, and you don't lift a finger in their defense...sooner or later they will get tired of that, and they will flock to the person who looks like they will fight for them.

It's not complicated. It's fairly basic human nature, the kind of thing that's generally learned in grade school.

Captain Hate

Obama said he found it “really strange” that “there was big cheering by Rush Limbaugh and various Republican factions that America had lost the Olympic bid.”

It's because you didn't make it about America, Junior; you made it all about yourself, about which you can't help yourself because you're so mentally ill. So we were applauding a victory over mental illness and throwing money away on a bunch of worthless deadbeats.

Beasts of England

How do you test the theory, re: 'punching back twice as hard' when the last two tomato cans got shellacked? Tell me more, please!!

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Just got home and this popped up as a live feed. It's a question and answer session with the Retired American Warriors PAC. Questions about VA and military readiness.

If you wait a few minutes, this will recycle as a video and you can start from the beginning. From what I saw he seemed pretty knowledgable and spoke in a nice conversational tone.

Porchlight:

I have come to accept the fact that Trump knows what he is doing on this campaign. He won't be president as the result of some cosmic accident.

I think he does have a problem restraining himself sometimes. But, being a media guy, he has figured out a way to incorporate that personal failing in his persona, and that mitigates against some of the negative effects.

sbw

To suggest otherwise is just unthinkable.

. . . and the administration and media will help you unthink it.

The Portland paper just announced that Trump has canceled his Thursday event at the Portland Expo. A spokeswoman said that the cancellation is due to a "campaign routing issue."

Porchlight

Appalled, I think one could say the same thing about LBJ (combative and impulsive), and yet the media tend to spin him a bit differently.

I guess it could be seen as a personal failing. I think Trump would say that it's part of how he gets things done. He makes it clear that those who attack him in the public arena will be made to feel the sting. Viewed in this light, his actions are quite consistent.

Marlene

The spokeswoman for the city of Portland said she was contacted by the campaign. The report in the paper implies that the release of his tax forms has something to do with the cancellation.

Not punching back is what is wrong with 90% of the elected Republicans now. Look at how Trump's strategy has transformed Priebus and Pence.

Hitting back at Bill's women seems rather reckless to me also.
The question is will she have to pay for being that hypocritical and venal?
Will it cost her in the polls?
Do we give her a pass on ruining these women's lives because by golly that would be sooo unseemly.

RG and Porchlight, 3.2 differential to final RCP average is tough to explain, at least for me, in any manner other than GOTV. By the way, I include fraud in GOTV. If Dems can get the dead and illegals to be recorded as votes for them, that's GOTV in my book.

My overall attitude is cheerful. It's October, and, as clarice b. for Brainiac's 11:05 AM link shows, Five Thirty Eight's Polls Plus has Trump an underdog with a realistic chance of prevailing. Pravda Media has abandoned talk of a landslide and is all in, along with Clan Bush types, Clean Toga Conservatives who apparently are happy to cede the federal courts to a Lawrence v Texas framework for the next forty years, and people such as Dorothy Rabinowitz who are otherwise fine thinkers but have gone temporalily insane, on dragging Hill and Bill and Huma and El Sid across the finish line to 1600 Penn. Not an ideal situation, but hardly gloom and doom in early October.

Captain Hate

From MM's 11:48 link:

She does not smoke and drinks alcohol occasionally,' Dr. Bardack wrote. 'She does not use illicit drugs or tobacco products. She eats a diet rich in lean protein, vegetables and fruits. She exercises regularly, including yoga, swimming, walking and weight training.'
According to Dr. Bardack, Hillary had recovered completely from the concussion and the blood clot in her brain.
But there were several problems with Dr. Bardack's letter. According to interviews that I conducted with several of Hillary's close friends, she drank wine or beer every day, had no interest in yoga, did not use a personal trainer to do weight training, and got most of her exercise by strolling around Chappaqua or walking in Rock Creek Park near her home in Washington.

clarice, were there any BigFoot in a pantsuit sightings in Rock Creek Park?

I've never really bought the "GOP GOTV fail" story for 2012. I think the big post-election story about Romney's ORCA system failing at the last minute was a "blame Romney for his loss"/excuse-making exercise by the GOP establishment who was trying to walk away with clean hands.

Seems like you have two options to choose from. Either the GOP establishment lied and ORCA did not actually crash on election day or ORCA got hacked/attacked by some outside source and hampered the GOP GOTV operation.

Captain Hate

There was a gorilla at Soldier Field, her hometown NFL team.

That's a mean way to describe Jay Cutler.

There's another option - the ORCA system was never what it was promised to be in the first place, and it failed on election day because it was poorly conceived or badly designed and managed; but the contractors, who were doubtless well-connected with the GOP leadership got paid regardless.

Porchlight

None of LBJ's nasty traits were as public as Trump's, as Trump has tended to live much of the unpleasent elements of his life on TV and the hOWARD sTERN SHOW.

Again, that is in part because the media was LBJ-friendly and is not Trump-friendly.

The other part is that as you say, Trump has lived most of his adult life in the public eye in a very different manner than a traditional politician. So that part is apples/oranges.

Perhaps anyone in LBJ's position as Kennedy's former VP/now president could have won in a walk in 1964. The media after all was ready to canonize JFK and elevate his successor to an elected full term. But what the Doris Kearns Goodwins of the world tend to leave out is that it took LBJ to help steal Texas for Kennedy in 1960 to get both Kennedy and LBJ into scoring position.

Again, the differences in public perception are more about the media treatment of the candidate than anything else.

lyle

I'd love to hear it, JiB!

But what the Doris Kearns Goodwins of the world tend to leave out is that it took LBJ to help steal Texas for Kennedy in 1960 to get both Kennedy and LBJ into scoring position.

It also took Nixon declining to challenge the results in some pretty obvious places in both Texas and Chicago for whatever reason. I'm not sure that it will ever possible to have an objective account of Nixon's political life because he did such an outstanding job of infuriating libs and conservatives. Watergate was the most overblown excuse for a crime foisted on the American public and has already been grossly exceeded by Zippy, LoLy, Koskinen and Comey. Daily events read like something out of the National Lampoon.

Deplorable Momto2

Just did a coffee run and heard a bit of Rush. He is fired up about the media today. He is livid that they lie, twist, distort, etc. and it works!

Latest lie is that Rudy said, "Trump is better for the U.S. than a woman!" They put a period (or exclamation point) here. When in truth he continued...."a woman, and the only thing she’s ever produced is a lot of work for the FBI checking out her emails?”

If you search Giuliani and woman comment you will see they all picked it up and repeated the first version without the rest of the sentence. How many people will hear the entire quote? How many will believe that Republicans are against H. just because she is a woman?

Porchlight

Yes, they do. They are really, really good at busing their living voters to the polls in their extended 30 day windows and doorknocking/dragging and getting illegals to illegally vote and voting on behalf of entire nursing homes and at every other type of voter and election fraud known to man.

Part of the reason Republicans lag is that we respect voters enough to let them make the decisions to come to the polls on their own without excessive handholding. That's why our wins are bigger mandates than their wins.

We only have Comcast on Nantucket but Verizon FIOS at home.

Drives my wife NUTS for paying double.

MY friend solved this and I think I will follow his lead by using his Home TV to DVR everything he likes. Then at his Nantucket house he pays Comcast only for Broadband then uses Slingbox to stream whatever TV he wants from his home TV/DVR.

Plenty of them do, maryrose. My Grand daughter is 19 and she loved Bernie, and will never vote for Hillary.

Thinking more about older SJWs like my brother and SIL. They dumped Hillary for Obama in 2008, but were ready to vote for her then. They would have loved Bernie the Socialist, and gone for Johnson (puff, puff) when he lost to Hill. As Trump looked stronger, they would vote for her as the effective vote against Trump.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Beasts,

It's a tough nut to crack. Granddaughter seems to think that she is "betraying her principles" if she votes for Trump. Daughter is refusing to discuss the election with me. She has bought into all of the vile crap the lefty sites are pushing.

There are, however, reports on the Reddit site and other places that some have decided to support Trump. Mostly, these are the people upset by corruption and special favors given to corporations. Those who are wedded to the social issues (abortion, gay marriage) are having a harder time switching.

What I imagine will happen is that a small but determined percentage will vote Trump, a larger number will go to Stein, and a bunch will stay home.

I have no idea how my brother is voting. He is a retired union electrician who has ranted about NAFTA for 20 years. I imagine he will go ahead and vote for Hillary, though. He is unable to understand the conflict between his position and his candidate.

Bottom line is we don't know, really.

The saving grace this election, Miss Marple, is that the momentum and enthusiasm are on our side. I believe that voting for Cankles is a chore for more than half of the Dems, and that's good.
