The new NY Times stuns us with a surprisingly upbeat depiction of Trump adviser Steve Bannon. They find a few straws in the wind but essentially give up on the "Bannon as racist, anti-Semitic bigot" meme - apparently he has two many black friends, Jewish friends and liberal friends who just haven't seen that.
On the other hand:
Where some perceive racism and nativism, others see a different -ism: opportunism. Whatever may be in his heart, they say, Mr. Bannon was happy to draw a white nationalist following to Breitbart, while denying that was his intent.
Ben Shapiro, a former Breitbart editor who has been sharply critical of Mr. Bannon, called him “a manipulator” who had “mainstreamed” far-right extremists for cynical political purposes.
Ms. Jones, Mr. Bannon’s former film collaborator, who describes herself as very liberal, said, “Steve’s not a racist.”
But, she added, “he’s using the alt-right — using them for power.”
Obviously Trump has played along, and mainstreaming these people is simply not acceptable.
Ann Althouse has more.
Meanwhile, Slate seems to like Shapiro.

Bannon has an amazing resume of accomplishments. My younger Hatette even said he managed the biosphere in Arizona while she was there as an undergrad (she said he did a poor job but I figure she was influenced by a bunch of wacademics whining that he didn't rubber stamp everything).
Posted by: Captain Hate | November 28, 2016 at 11:51 AM
If you're basing "mainstreaming" on Baby Face Shapiro's mewling and puking from his changing table I'd recommend a slightly more credible source like maybe Erwin Corey.

Posted by: maryrose | November 28, 2016 at 01:19 PM
More precisely, the Pope is infallible when speaking "ex cathedra."
http://www.catholic.com/quickquestions/what-does-the-term-ex-cathedra-mean-and-where-did-the-catholic-church-come-up-with-it
Special rundown for the underinformed on matters Catolico...
The Pope is deemed infallible ex cathedra for the believers of the Catholic Church, not "all of Christianity" (whatever that is) which includes historically protestant (Lutheran, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist) denominations.
Protestants reject papal authority. The "christian" moniker is used as a blade for cutting many ways against papal authority; perhaps the most effective is the "I listen to Jesus directly not the Pope" mantra.
Then there is the faux "unified front" crowd who believe the christian label gives their specific creed strength by association; and, it plasters over significant disagreements over dogmatic concerns and administrative profit-sharing (okay the profit sharing comment is from the Isle of Sark).
It's also a fav label by the one-size-fits-all atheists who reject the existence of God.
Ennahow, the bottom line--- whenever Pope Cha Cha Cha speaks to the press he isn't imbued with infallibility just because he opens his pie hole.

One Ohio Mosque Has Been at the Center of SIX Terror Cases
The website for Masjid Omar Ibn El Khattab, just a mile from the Ohio State University campus, proclaims itself "the Muslim Heart of Columbus." And yet the mosque, described as one of the most ideologically hardline in the city, has grabbed the media spotlight once again: former attendees were recently reported as having joined the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

I haven't heard anything TC. The sense from the Gov is Stein is wasting taxpayer funds, the sense from everyone (including the Elections Board) is the recount won't change the results, Hans Von Spakovsky said on the radio now judge would give Stein a hand recount anyway (no harm to her since zero chance of a recounting getting her the electoral college votes).
OneWisconsinNow (the local Soros / OFA group) likes it because they can complain about voter ID (as if the zero people reporting a lack of access to ID as a reason for not voting are compelling somewhere).
The legislature has to tiptoe (assembly districts "unconstitutional" per some hack judge... WI may not have a legislature right now?)

The OSU slaughter is business as usual under the One and Only Islam.
I've prompted more head explosions here in the San Fransicko Bay Area with information contained in this stellar work of non-fiction about the One and Only Islam and jihad:
Catastrophic Failure- Blindfolding America in the Face of Jihad, by Stephen Coughlin.
Summary: After the events of September 11, 2001, Stephen Coughlin was mobilized from his private sector career to the Intelligence Directorate at the Joint Chiefs of Staff to work in Targeting.
Thus began his education in terrorism. In the years that followed, Coughlin earned recognition as the Pentagon’s leading expert on the Islamic-based doctrines motivating jihadi groups that confront America. He came into demand as a trainer and lecturer at leading commands and senior service staff institutions, including the National Defense University, the Army and Navy War Colleges, the Marine Corps-Quantico, the State Department, and the FBI.
So effective were his presentations that some in the special operations community dubbed them “Red Pill” briefings, a reference to an iconic scene in The Matrix. It’s an apt metaphor: Once the facts and doctrines are properly explained and understood, there is no going back.
This was more than our enemies – and, it seems, our leaders – could tolerate.
Beginning in 2011, the Muslim Brotherhood convinced the White House to ban Coughlin and put an end to his briefings. The move was in keeping with shariah concepts of slander that seek to blindfold America to certain realities that render us defenseless against a threat made existential by the very ignorance it gets our leaders to enforce.
In times like this – when the White House’s former counterterrorism strategist can declare it unconstitutional to allow national security analysts to look to Islam to understand jihad – there’s an urgent need to pull away the blindfold so we can see and confront the threat.
Such is the goal of Catastrophic Failure. The book, drawn heavily from Coughlin’s “outlawed” briefings, is a comprehensive assessment of Islamic law and doctrine known to form the basis of hostile threat strategies directed against America and the West, the challenges they present, and the ideologically induced breakdown of fact-based decisionmaking that is nothing short of professional malpractice by our national security elites.

Not publicly, Appalled. Team Clinton no doubt has been weighing the pros and cons behind the scenes. If Team Hill didn't want this, it could have come out with a strong statement to Stein to shut it down a week ago. I suspect Team Hill was waiting for Trump to fall flat on his face as POTUS-elect. That hasn't happened. This is the last gasp.

TC, I don't believe that report for one second.
Any story that quotes anonymous sources "close to President Trump" is automatically suspect at this point.

I'm not sure how credible the source is, but someone at Althouse claiming to be an attorney (or in Levon Helm's band) said that the recount won't prevent the states from certifying electors. He said federal law superseded same in regard to recounts and presidential elections.
I suspect that's accurate or each candidate would demand recounts in every state they lost, and we'd never have an Electoral College seated...

OL, Trump wouldn't have given Romney a very respectful hearing in NJ and then have Conway undercut him. Trump knows he is going to need Romney GOPers to support or at least not to obstruct his agenda. It's one thing to avoid sucking up to Duke and Duke GOPers. It's another thing to alienate needlessly people when you have at best a 53-47 Senate majority (and that only happens if the GOPer wins Louisiana and Manchin switches).
Posted by: Thomas Collins | November 28, 2016 at 02:40 PM
Also I do not have a clue what Hillary is thinking. If she had planned a Gore, it would have started Nov 9 if not before, and they would have planted evidence in advance.
It's just what they do when the plan is to steal something.
Not having done that, and after waiting for Trump to imply a free pass on investigation and indictment which sure appeared to be a magnanimous peace gesture, to then stick a stick into Trump's face this late looks suicidal to me.
Or she and they are nuts.

Posted by: Thomas Collins | November 28, 2016 at 02:42 PM
This is an explanation, including direct quotes from the pertinent state statute, of the hurdles Stein faces in PA. Short-hand version--the cut-off date for requesting a recount was 5 days after the election, so she missed that deadline. Today's deadline is not for filing a recount, but for contesting the election--basically claiming that the election was conducted illegally. If I'm reading it right, in order to contest the election, 5 voters must assert UNDER OATH that the election was illegal and submit prima facie evidence of such in court. Given that President Obama himself has asserted that the federal government has found no evidence that the Russians hacked the election, I don't know what "evidence' they could come up with to support a claim under oath (and risk five years in prison for perjury) that the election was illegal.

When that sunk in, they may have realized that there's no short-term downside to them trying any stunt.
And they're nuts. :)
Posted by: Beasts of England | November 28, 2016 at 02:48 PM
I'm not so sure about your 2:40 either, TC. I can see Trump being able to get the support he needs from GOPe at a lower price (lesser concessions) than giving the SOS plum seat to Romney and still benefiting by humiliating the most sneaky, namecalling, and disloyal of the GOPe leaders (Romney). In many circles seeking peace from the troops while cutting off the head of their leader is a time honored act of leadership.

Beasts, I just think the Dems and for sure the Clintons always, always have a Plan B for stealing what they don't get fair and square. If so, then the delay from 2:30AM to the next morning, then the extra hour before she came out to concede was spent looking at the Plan B with her thugs and deciding whether to use it or not. In the end, the smart move for staying out of jail and for keeping all the loot was to smile and concede.
Afterall, at 2:30 Podesta kept Plan B alive by shouting "this is not over...get some sleep and come back in the morning".
In the absolute absence of even a single instance of fraud being raised in two weeks, waking from her slumber this late to push the button for Plan B is just, well, nuts.

The one place where TC might have a point is if Trump is preparing for hand recounts to deny them both 270 votes on Dec 19 so the House and Senate are forced to pick. If that happened, having Romney already on his team and nice words having been exchanged between them, would take any wind out of the sails in the House to elect anyone other than Trump.

Public humiliation is one approach.
There are others...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If stien were really interested in a true vote, she might be demanding recount in states that were barely won by hrc.. As it is, only going after states won by PE45, she exposes her obvious agenda, being a shill4hill.
Did someone here link this earlier: http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2016/11/the_democrats_real_strategy_in_launching_recounts.html
Deplorables: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
GOPe: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Conway: Crush your enemies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their women.
Deplorables: That is good! That is good.
FWIW, here is my guess about Rodham and the recounts:
She was dragged into this. Her people have checked this out and know that there is zero chance of overturning the election. They have said so, basically. Obama is totally against the recounts as he does not want this on his legacy. So Rodham never wanted this and has done nothing to push this.
BUT, the more unrealistic dead enders of the left are willing to grasp at any straw and throw money at it. Stein is perfectly happy to take their money.
This put Rodham in a tough spot. She wants to "keep her options open for 2020." She cannot afford to look to the loony left that she abandoned the fight. She cannot afford to piss off Obama and the sensible Democrats who know that this is a waste of time and money. So she is playing it half way all around. She did not start this, but since it is happening anyway, she is joining in while making it clear that they think nothing is going to change.
She is trying to be the Freddie Krueger of politics, constantly arising from the dead.
I'm in the "seek peace from the troops by cutting off the head of their leader" here, and I don't have a problem thinking this is all theater on their part.
Trump has Romney return for a second visit, then says "sorry, my supporters just can't tolerate you after your disloyalty."
No doubt after that of what is expected from his Cabinet and administration.
She has no 2020 option--she's dead dead dead. She went along with this to poop on Trump's parade and undermine his claim to a mandate--just as her freakazoids keep raising the popular vote--knowing full well only the loonies think that means anything.
Trump v. Conway is good cop-bad cop kabuki imo.
Hillary's options for 2020 are embalming or cremation.
I was living in the SF Bay Area during the 2000 election--the day the Supreme Court stopped the re-re-re-recount in FL was the day that the liberals there completely lost their minds. It was the day they went from disagreeing with conservatives to wanting to round us all up and put us in re-educaton camps.
I think this whole current recount thing is simply a means of convincing the useful idiots that the Russians stole the election for Trump. When the recount efforts either fail to take place or fail to change the results, the meme will be that the Russians got away with it. It's nothing more than a means of keeping the anti-Trump hatred that dwells within the breasts of the Leftists' foot-soldiers and professional agitators alive and boiling.
Also, it undermines people's faith in democracy, and that is always an end-goal of the Left.
Fresh Air. You forgot the leaf grinder option.
I would be content if romne were offered a spot heading the VA or the business guy (number 2) at the pentagon. Let him work his business turn-around skills in either place (my pref is for VA) and then, after four years, if he is a team player and actually, you know, gets the job done, he could, just possibly, be officially rehabilitated and offered a position more to his self-perceived station in life.
Dues, he's gotta stay in the wilderness for awhile before I'd let him in.
The GOP is dead to me. If PE45 gives romny a plum position, the master who crushed the opposition will not have solidified his tremendous victory over the GOPe--similar to Gulf War One, he will have failed to close the door, and will have allowed the GOPe to escape to Baghdad, that they might live to fight another day.
The Highway of Death should have no exit for the GOPe. I want KAC in the Apache taking care of business.
I really can't believe I read someone say something about "keeping her options open for 2020." Good gawd, utterly deranged.
Where some perceive racism and nativism, others see a different -ism: opportunism.
So the Times is feigning shock at opportunism among political operatives? They never saw that with the Clintons and their gang (Carville, Podesta, et al) or Obama and his? In any case, Bannon seems much more idealistic in his own way than the Clinton/Obama crowd, especially Hillary who seemed to be entirely about personal enrichment for the past 20 years.
As I noted on the previous thread, both Kaine and Kasich deplored the gun violence in the OSU attack and called for steeper controls.
Now they want to take the guns away from our police forces.
The only gun used was by the cop who shot Mahommed dead.
Any story that quotes anonymous sources "close to President Trump" is automatically suspect at this point.
Probably the same sources that two weeks ago described the transition as a 'knife fight.' No agenda there, nosiree.
