While I can, I wish all a Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for the insight, information, and support that JOM provides, and grateful that TM gives us the opportunity to gather here.

I am headed north, to the gray and cold that is conducive to gathering and cooking and eating and drinking and cards and football...

My young friend went back to her duties yesterday at work. Thank you for holding her in your heart and prayers.

Tom's second quoted paragraph is comedy gold, Jerry! Gold!!

It melds nicely with my assessment of Friedman earlier this morning: do they write this stuff sincerely? Is their nominal readership stupid enough to fall for this? Did they really take the word 'gullible' out of the dictionary?

PD

that is nevertheless based on some level of mutual trust

How much trust did they extend to GWB?

How much will they extend to Trump? None, if past coverage is any indicator.

Still loving that he completely sidestepped our media gatekeepers by posting his transition message on FB yesterday.

fdcol63

The problem, as I see it, with any attempt by Trump to do an end-run around the MSM gatekeepers to get his message directly out to the people is that he will need to use social media to do this.

And of course, the problem there is the Leftists who control those social media and internet outlets, like Zuckerberg/FB, Twitter, and Brin/Google/YouTube, etc.

Make no mistake, the Left may be imploding ... but they still have considerable power and money, and can still put up many roadblocks to any Right-leaning messaging they really want to.

Momto2

Sometimes when I read things like this (below) I wonder if it is some parody site, fake news, etc. Sadly, the truth is sometimes as bad or worse than the imaginations of "fake journalists!"

Beasts,

Isn't Friedman just toeing the Alinsky line: “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

That's all he does in all of his narratives.

J. Fred Muggs

Sorry to hear about Ernie, JiB.

I too am off to northern locales specifically KY so still part of the great South. Can't wait to talk to inlaws about KY which now has all Republican state offices and the Cowboys & Cubs. They are all fanatics like me. A Blessed Thanksgiving 🦃 to all. We have much to be thankful for don't we 🙏 Especially thankful for all JOMers. . And safe travels to all who will be traveling!

Beasts of England

To a degree, JiB. I suspect it will take them some time before they recognize that tactic has lost its efficacy.

Beasts of England

You're right, fdcol63 - which is why they've pushed so hard with their 'fake news' narrative. If it were anyone other than Trump trying an end-around, I'd be concerned. He can handle it. Yugely. :)

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

That "mutual level of trust" they count on is exactly, and I mean egg-zactly, the same trust Lucy counts on when ever she coaxes Chuck to give it the old college try just one more time.

The Lucy left is shocked and saddened that Charlie Brown hired some big creep named Donald who runs up, and just when they pull the football away, he kicks them in the head.

Suddenly the little game isn't nearly as fun as it used to be.

les nessman

"And of course, the problem there is the Leftists who control those social media and internet outlets, like Zuckerberg/FB, Twitter, and Brin/Google/YouTube, etc."

Too late. The intertubes have matured enough that people are catching on to their games. They are already being exposed as subtly redirecting traffic away from undesirable topics. If they try that crap with the highest-profile person in the world, they will be busted cold on it.

And that highest-profile person just happens to be Trump. He will blast back with both barrels if they screw with him. If they actually do anything illegal to deceive the public, the FedGov will start to turn it's gaze their way. They won't want that.

Bring. It. On.

Let's take a trip down memory lane and review the relationship of the Obama Administration to the media.

Obama lectured reporters on what stories to cover and how to cover them.

Obama's political staff regularly demanded and received editing rights on stories about them.

Obama's Justice Department prosecuted reporters for doing their jobs.

Obama's NSA (and other agencies) bugged, tapped the phones, and read the email of reporters.

Obama's State Department sat on its hands for four years while reporters were held prisoner by Iran.

Obama personally sat on his hands while ISIS captured, tortured and eventually beheaded reporters.

In return, reporters by and large treated Obama and everyone in his administration with a level of deference that was (and remains) breathtaking. They simply did not care that he dictated orders to them, prosecuted them, wiretapped them, and allowed their colleagues to be tortured and murdered by terrorists.

So, you know what? I'm not feeling very worked up about Trump saying mean things to some reporters and their bosses, and it's really hard for me to see that as a threat to the Republic. They made their bed, and now they can lie in it.

AP mentioned the media meeting in passing, not having any first hand account of what transpired because, as they said, the principal guests were not talking. They certainly didn’t quote the NY Post.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

les nessmamn,

So true. In addition, once he is inaugurated he controls the White House web site, and there isn't a damn thing they can do about that.

I really appreciated the Forbes article on Jared Kushner, which DebinNC linked on the last page of the previous thread.

Here's the link again, if anyone missed it:

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Just an observation; the HIPPA law needs a little tweaking.
My son was hospitalized after his psychotic break last Friday and sent from the local ER to a mental facility in Modesto about an hour and a half away.
Now, I have never sought conservatorship or anything similar. Didn't need to. He did sign a disclosure agreement with the local county mental health people but not where he's at for obvious reasons.
So for me to find out anything I call them and they give him a message that he can call me to let me know anything.

Now, that might work for somebody with a couple of broken ribs and a functioning mind, but how is a guy who is assiduously working with the ghost of Bela Lagosi perfecting Plan Nine From Outerspace supposed to do anything in his own interests?

DebinNC

MM, I appreciated Neo and lurkersusie linking it. It's a must-read imo, because it shows Trump's not alone and rudderless in the tower.

DebinNC

Kudos and keep at 'em, sbw. If they ever did, AP via Julie Pace should no longer be front row center in the WH briefing room.

Jared Kushner will now be the de facto replacement target for the MSM and especially, the NY Times. Watch.

http://justiceforwv.com/president-elect-trump-called-governor-elect-justice-to-discuss-coal-jobs/

I had to get this from a link provided on Twitter in reply to a tweet of Sean Hannity's.

Because the national press doesn't cover stuff like this, you have to keep your eyes peeled for information.

I am very pleased that he called the governor-elect right away and discussed getting the miners back to work. He is not going to forget about those people. Good for hiim!

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Meanwhile, the Reddit people have been enjoying the salt from so many liberal tears, so a bunch of them ordered bags of salt to be delivered to the New York Times offices, which should start to be arriving today.

I amsure this will cause all sorts of overreaction on the part of the Times, including probably "fears" of a terrorist attck.

I am still juvenile enough to appreciate this.

PD

Trump certainly doesn't seem to be waiting around to get to work.

What'd Obama do right after he was elected? Go on vacation for a while?

DebinNC

I hadn't even thought of Trump's message getting out via Republican govs and local news reports. Excellent.

fdcol63

Never underestimate a wounded, desperate animal that is backed into a corner.

The Left is wounded and desperate. And they are violent, authoritarian liars by their very nature, who wish to destroy this country. Nothing they do will surprise me.

Their mask is already off, and they are betting that the 1/2 of the population who voted for Hillary will still have their backs, and will still be susceptible to their lies, innuendos, and manipulation.

Trump, despite his power and YUGELINESS, will still be facing a dividing Congress (even a divided GOP), a divided judiciary, a divided Federal bureaucracy, and a divided electorate .... and powerful opposition from many quarters, domestically and internationally.

So, while I may hope for the best from Trump and his administration, I still think his challenges and obstacles are formidable.

DebinNC

Iggy, I have no advice re John. I'm glad he's under observation in a secure place right now. I pray that something helpful results and that God gives you wisdom and peace.

les nessman

This 'fake news' narrative is going to bite the MSM in the ass if they push it too far.

Sure there are the RightWingBombThrower dot com sites spreading propaganda and wild stories. But there are millions of them, on both sides. Good luck stopping that.

But if they keep pushing it, people will start saying "hey what about all of YOUR fake stories CNN? What about all YOUR slanted reporting NYT?"

They're going to regret starting this fight. The Army of Davids is getting too big to bully now. They're sowing the wind.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

fdcol63,

Of course you are right, but I am comforted by the caliber of people he has chosen so far and his ability to navigate the political world with NO experience.

It's pretty impressive and gives me confidence that he will get a great deal accomplished.

Yes, the left is cornered, but they don't have the backing of the people as much as they think. Their message is one of fear and threats of violence. This is not exactly how you win hearts and minds.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Others have probably realized this before me because it's a bit subtle and I don't perceive subtle too well.
In any event, what I notice is the word "authoritarian" is now being used by the elitist establishment types and the globalization pushing power structure to mean self governance by sovereign nations.
Like being a zek was a badge of honor in the Soviet Union, being labeled an authoritarian is beginning to indicate someone doing the right thing.

Jim Eagle

Jim Justice is the Trump of West Virginia. Owns the Greenbrier and its two championship golf courses. These two are peas in a pod and are probably going to do some good things for the coal industry in West "by God" Virginia.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

TBT,

He doesn't have to. Removal of the block from the DOJ on the NYPD case will probably result in court, as well as various cases against the foundation in (I hear) 5 different state jurisdictions.

By now you should understand strategic thinking. If you don't, then you are going to get yourself upset a lot over the next 4 years.

Neo

Donald Trump's election looms over a U.S. citizenship ceremony in San Antonio, as the judge presiding over the ceremony says if you don't like that Trump will be president, go to another country.
“I can assure you that whether you voted for him or you did not vote for him, if you are a citizen of the United States, he is your president,” Judge John Primomo said. “He will be your president and if you do not like that, you need to go to another country.”

Found another one:

Dear AP:

Burying the lede. Paragraph 25 of a newspaper article is likely to be cut.

Yet paragraph 25 is the first and only mention of substantive news that President elect Trump called the Governor elect of West Virginia to discuss what could be done for coal miners. Even then, AP’s paragraph is meatless:

On Saturday, [Governor elect] Justice said he and Trump talked for 15 minutes about efforts to put miners back to work. He didn't disclose specifics.

Please ask AP editors to try to do better.

The meeting with the oligarchs of the media strikes me as a savvy move by Trump. There are three possible Team Trump reactions and counter-reactions by media oligarchs.

1. Team Trump tries to be nice to the oligarchs, and the oligarchs continue to trash Trump and his policies.

2. Team Trump gets in the oligarchs' faces, and the oligarchs continue to trash Trump and his policies.

3. Team Trump gets in the oligarchs' faces, and the oligarchs decide to be slightly more fair and balanced while continuing to downgrade Trump and his policies.

In other words, Trump has nothing to lose by challenging oligarch media on its bias. Oligarch media will either continue to be no worse than it already is, or will slightly improve to gain some access to Administration Trump,

Re sbw's 10:44 AM post: The most striking thing to me so far about the President-elect is his insistent focus on being true to his campaign promises. This may have the credentialed moronocracy more rattled than his victory itself. That he is doing this from his tower in Manhattan, a favorite if not the favorite location of the credentialed moronocracy, is especially delicious.

sbw

Trump won’t pursue charges against Clinton

He doesn’t have to. Look for an equivalent of Judicial Watch to file a case and initiate discovery. Then, after the RICO is obvious, the DOJ can merely step in to see that justice is done.

Neo

This idea of not continuing the investigation of the Clintons is folly.

I could see a pardon after the investigation is laid bare to the light of the day, but not before.

Trump risks leaving a million conspiracy theories alive that the emails (and Clinton Foundation) contraversy was really nothing.

Jim Eagle

TC,

My money is still on No. 2. From Newt's beat down in 2011-12 primaries to Trump's recent meeting, they haven't backed down but rather doubled up. Look at how the NY Times is trying to set the rules. No, I think he avoids them using social media and lets the American voter decide for themselves who to trust.

Fresh Air, deplorably

I can't see how Trump can promise not to pursue charges against Hillary.

First of all, if Zero couldn't direct the investigation--at least not legally--then neither can Trump. It's the A.G.'s call, not the president's.

Second, there are presumably many e-mails in the 650,000 found on Weiner's laptop that have not been seen or even categorized, much less been read by Jeff Sessions. It is my opinion that somewhere there exists an indelible record of direction to destroy evidence by Hillary and her gargoyles.

Third, as TLG notes, this sounds like a rope-a-dope designed to keep Hillary's enturtled neck exposed to the guillotine by avoiding a pardon from Zero.

Lock her up!
