The truth is leaking out. Someone is a "Lying, corrupt B*tch"

In multi dimensional chess world one has to wonder if Trump was picking Haley as much as he may have been sacrificing her to move Henry McMaster into the Governorship of SC.

Haley will work at the pleasure of the POTUS, and South Carolina makes a slight turn to the right.

Hopefully McMaster isn't an alt-righter...

Yes Jane,Kiwi will fit. We might try bringing Scout, but I'm still mad at him about getting away from me and running into traffic. I'm going to Petco to find a doggie life vest.

Haley for UN ambassador is not a move that anyone would have predicted. I have no idea if she would have a clue on how to serve in that position. (Haley seems to get mixed reviews on her service as SC governor.)

As a move on a chessboard, however, it feels like a good move. A potential opponent has been moved out of a position where she might be able to become the attractive leader of a loyal opposition, a Trump ally moves into her old seat, and the UN types will likely have to be mollified that the US is represented by one of our many epitomes of diversity.

Captain Hate

I'm the human GPS in our marriage,I love to navigate and read the maps.

Unpossible. Less than 50% of what she told me to do yesterday was accurate. A few of those times I just ignored her, thinking "intuitively that is wrong". The bad thing is that she thinks she's the reincarnation of Lewis and Clark.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Richard Grenell would be more valuable at State, because he knows where the bodies are buried. Maybe not Secretary, but assistant Secretary.

I have come to value him as one of the most astute commenters on Twitter. He often pointed out how things operated in the State Department and called BS on some of their excuses.

Also, the guy I linked at 9:32 has an online spreadsheet with the updated vote count.

He seems to have a bit of an agenda, though I have no reason to doubt the numbers. My one objection is that he defines "swing states" after the fact as those that flipped from 2012 or were within 5%. From a polling perspective you need to define those states beforehand. There are a bunch of states that as of October were viewed as 'in play' but don't make the list, and vice-versa. In any case, in his 13 swing states, Trump wins the total vote by almost 3 percentage points.

Beasts of England

Considering our current UN Ambassador, it's not like the job requires any expertise or hint of intelligence. Haley sounds like a perfect choice...

Old Lurker

Bingo, Beasts.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Captain Hate,

I love map reading and hate GPS. One of the classes I took for my degree was "Maps and Aerial Photos."

I love maps of all types: road maps, topographic maps, political maps, etc.

I detest the little map-thingy on the phone as I like to look at the big picture and check out alternate routes as well as seeing if there are side trips I want to make along the way.

My grandkids aren't very good at map-reading. They are too dependent on the phones.

Act10 strikes again. Racine teaching assistants union decertified.

I never rely on Mrs. Buckeye for navigation.

She literally has a problem getting right and left mixed up. Some kind of mental block. She knows the difference, but gets the words mixed up. Go figure.

She also has a very difficult time with symbolic spatial relationships. Maps look like gobbledy-goop to her.

Google Maps/Nav has made travel with her slightly more tolerable.

And don't even ask if she can make heads or tails of an aviation sectional.

Captain Hate

Hopefully McMaster isn't an alt-righter...

What does that mean? Is alt-right the term du jour for Tea Party or is it just a bunch of keyboard commandos of indefinite origin and philosophy? Or is it some term DU and Kos came up with to stereotype people like most of us? I don't recall hearing alt-right rallies like I did Tea Party ones which is the source of my confusion.

I used to rely on my inner GPS, but there's no way to anticipate an accident and traffic jam 20 miles ahead. The 'lady' has saved me hours of aggravation.

On the inner GPS, my Mrs K (not KK's) likes to tell the story of how we were driving around Italy, headed to Florence. I insisted I could figure out my way to the hotel in the middle of Florence and refused to stop for directions, even though we didn't even have a map. I would have made it, but her bladder didn't hold out, so we stopped at a different hotel, and w/o my permission she asked for directions to our hotel (which was only a few blocks away).

Captain Hate

Buckeye sounds familiar with my situation.

It was sarcasm of sorts, CH.

The charge of racism comes in many shades and "alt-right" seems to today's pick.

We took I-95 when we drove to Florida, because we stopped one night to stay with the daughter and son-in-law. We had to avoid a portion of 95 in NC because of the hurricane road damage. I figured out a route thru NC and SC that eventually got us on I-75 south of Atlanta. Ha. We drove about an hour thru cotton fields in Georgia. Hubby wasn't amused. I kept saying,we could have gone thru Atlanta (nag, nag). Trust me!

Or is it some term DU and Kos came up with to stereotype people like most of us?

I think this is most likely explanation.

"Knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing Neanderthals" uses more than 25% of the character space in a SMS text message, so they agreed on an abbreviation:)

Old Lurker

I think it is a male-female thing.

Males have built in GPS skills and Females simply do not.

My directions for Potomac to Nantucket are "take I95 up to the Del Mem Bridge then the NJ Tpk to the Garden State to the Tappen Z to the Merritt then back to I 95 until Providence then head east to the Cape.

My wife prints out detailed directions that begin "Turn left out of the driveway then right at the first light...and so on through about 150 steps."

And I agree with RG about letting Capn's wife read this board...

When the simple request is, "keep your eye out for such and such stret," my wife usual response is, "how should I know where such and such street is, I've never been there before."

That is followed by, "it is probably another mile away."

When she calls me for directions I ask the same thing everytime. "Did you pull over or are you still driving? I can give you directions from a stationery point."

Her response? "I cant pull over! We are already late!!"

This is What Fake News Looks Like: NYT Tries to Silence PizzaGate

Old Lurker

I rest my case, TK.

James D.

I missed the recipe sharing yesterday, but better late than never. This is one of the two regular stuffings at our family Thanksgiving (I don't have the recipe for the other one)...

The night before, take 2 lbs white bread and 1 lb whole wheat bread, break/cut it into coarse pieces and let it dry out.

The morning of, melt 1.5 lbs butter over low heat. Once it's melted, add in 1/5 cups chopped celery, 2 cups chopped onions and 1 cup peeled & diced apples. Cook all that over low heat for 5 minutes.

Then, add in 3 cups of chicken broth and bring it to a boil. Once that's done, turn off the heat, add in 30 cut-up sage leaves, 8 springs of thyme and 1 cup of dark raisins (I personally use craisins, but either way is fine), salt & pepper to taste (I don't think that's really necessary), and mix together with the bread.

Cook, covered with tin foil, for 30 minutes t 375 degrees, then remove the tin foil and allow it to crisp up for a little while longer (how long depends on your oven and how crisp you want it).

Beasts of England

Men have built-in GPS skills? I could get lost walking to the bathroom... :)

Old Lurker

It's a Bell Curve, Beasts.

Agree with RG completely re Haley at UN. Speaks very well of Trump that he chose her.

MM's menu sounds pretty much like mine except, instead of a relish tray, we'll have the required Southern favorite - "jello salad".

Beasts of England

Some guy has to keep the left side of the soundbow warm, OL. ;)

Mrs. Buckeye would reject that recipe in a heartbeat!

"I have no idea where to buy a 1/5 cup measuring utensil"

I swear to God.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Captain Hate,

Alt-right is the non-traditional right news sources, like Infowars, Breitbart, etc.

Within the alt right there is a very small subset of neo-Nazi types like Stormfront.

We have all been lumped into the basket of deplorables and dubbed alt right because it sounds like a hip scary term.

On the left, they have stuff like the Black Panthers, communists, etc. but don't you dare lump all of those in with the democrats.

It's just another way to attack Trump supporters and Trump. I sincerely hope one of the Trump kids eventually buys a network. Maybe not while their dad is president, but eventually. Almost all of cable news has degenerated into propaganda and shouting, and offers very little actual content.

For example, where is the in-depth study of why we can become energy independent and what value that would have for national security and foreign affairs?

Why not a practical story for those who are scraping by on how to economize and cut costs?

How about feature stories on small towns and how they operate?

The world has so many interesting things to that it seems like watching 2-4 people chat and tell us their opinions seems pretty lame, even if I happen to agree with them, which I usually don't.

Old Lurker

BTW Lurkersusie re those stories about recounts and flipping electors and all the rest...

My guess is dangling the prospect of not jailing Hillary together with the "softer" moves MM pointed out are a way of saying "if you come at me with those stunts, you damn well better kill me because if you try but do not prevail, I will truly bury you and everyone in your family and your inner circle..."

Smart move, that.

Jim Eagle

One of the problems with in-car GPS (at least on our Merc) is that when you run into traffic and all it tells you is that it is chock-a-bloc for miles but offers no alternate routes. Then you have wife pull out her iPhone and the map app. It doesn't care that you are stuck but you can scope out alternates more quickly with that than relying on the in-car GPS who will continue to send you back to the stopped traffic if you keep it on as you divert.

This has been especially true whenever we drive NYC through CT. on I-95 to Boston or beyond.

Are you paying attention, OL?

Old Lurker

Beasts, I started to mention that in all things Bell Curve, you seem to always prefer the tails, but this is a family blog sometimes...

Old Lurker

Jack, my GPS problem on that run is it always selects a route that might save a mile or two and while it always looks shorter to use the Cross-Bronx, that is almost always a mistake.

Beasts of England

lol, OL!! Yeah - not gonna touch that one! ;)

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Old Lurker,

I find your observations on Trump and negotiations very valuable, as yours is a world with which I am unfamiliar. My obs4ervations are solely based on reading Trump's book and watching him over the last 18 months.

I am very interested in the cabinet choices and associated appointments because he seems to have great skill in picking people for appropriate positions.

I look forward to seeing who becomes head of the RNC. I believe that he gets to express a preference, and I imagine a lot of NeverTrumpers will be shut out in the cold with much wailing and teeth-gnashing.

I am thoroughly enjoying watching my granddaughter weekdays while mom and dad work. She'll be 18 months on Christmas Day and she already knows her left from right. Every time I change or dress her I start with left, then right. Hadley grace is a genius!

I hope momma's feeling better daddy.

Mcmaster is old boy, a counterpart to murkowski, I was looking forward to grenell or gabbard, then again, wdik.

Females most certainly can have a fine-tuned inner gps if they grew up in a family where their mother did not. My mom could get you to mexico while concentrating on directions to canada. So I learned to read maps so we could actually make it to canada.

When we took the diva to college she and my hubby used gps and thus had no idea how to actually get from the airport to the college. I knew if I ever had to come back in a hurry I would have to know how to get from airport rental to college and back again just by memory. I think some of that comes from all the due diligence business trips I did alone back when I was younger.

Already had one cooking mishap and hopefully it is the last. Trying to brine turkey overnight so it could dry today as mario batali suggested that and it made sense. When I added brine to ice last night the cooler was clean but the drain was not sealed so my homey, molasses, soy, two heads of garlic cloves etc. went all over the kitchen tile floor. Luckily I keep old towels in cabinets in laundry room and we used those to mop up brine.

Remade brine this morning and turkey was not all submerged. Red got gallon bags and filled with ice and turkey to displace some of the brine until turkey was all covered.

Her dad will be so pleased his history major not only got a real job with that degree, but also knows how to engineer a problem.

Just got finished talking to my young UCF graduating senior. She has a best friend in Jax, a gay white male, who did high school with her.

He's all up in arms about the Dakota Access Pipeline situation. Sigh. I didn't specifically know anything about the entire #noDAPL thing.

I do know, however, we're in position to make serious advances in American energy independence and that may be crucial in us collectively digging ourselves out of this economic bind we find ourselves in.

This, in fact, may be single greatest beneficiary of a Trump presidency; increased energy independence and efficiency.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Gina McCarthy said Benito Obama already made that train run on time...I think.
Something about trains anyway.

It should be 1.5 cups chopped celery, not 1/5 cups.

Figured something like that.

it always looks shorter to use the Cross-Bronx

To paraphrase Yogi, nobody uses the Cross-Bronx, it's always jammed up.

Talking about maps and such, The British Library has an exhibition on "Maps and Drawing the Line" through March of 2017. We may go over during our trip for New Year's. Nothing about "Red Lines" be drawn but for map lovers it looks like worthwhile expenditure of time if you are in London.

daddy, easy for you down from Cambridge into Kings Cross and its then next door.

Screw that.

The one appointment i dont get is Carson for had sectetary, that would be woodson's wheelhouse.

Yeah,yeah,yeah...picking Niki Haley was 3d chess...sure...keep telling yourself that.

Haley led the fight against the Confederate flag in SC. She's a secret progressive and that's why he picked her because he's a secret progressive too.

He allowed Hillary to walk and wants to help her heal, he believes global warming is manmade and is not pulling out of the international climate agreement, he's not building a wall, not building a muslim registry, not deporting 11 million immigrants
not pulling out of Iran nuclear deal and if his views from 8 years ago are anything to go by....he's pro-life.

Guarantee you he leaves roe v wade intact.

I like him. So, let him have his massive tax breaks and his conflicts of interest. That's cool. This isn't going to be as bad as we thought.

that would be woodson's wheelhouse.

You mean Robert? Love the guy, but he's going on 80.

I'm a museum association member. Pay nada anytime I go. Plus I have a research badge for the library and rare book room. Their exhibits are always well done and curated. Last year we did the Magna Carta with my FIL. Very well done.

The main issue at the UN is inevitably the Arabs going after Israel (like the ridiculous UNESCO resolution a few weeks ago calling Israel the "occupying power" in (East) Jerusalem, as if the Temple Mount area is historically Muslim/Arab. No idea where Haley stands on those issues, but I presume she'll follow Trump and stand up for Israel.

Not criticizing the Library, but it never ceases to amaze me were the prog mentality can take you.

Beasts of England

Had a quick martini with my Mom the other night before I went to happy hour (makes sense, right?) and she spends the whole time staring at my head. Of course, I know what's coming next -

'You are getting a haircut before Thanksgiving aren't you, Beasts?'

'Yes, Mom...' :(

Be back later.

"So, I met with [retired General James Mattis], who is a very respected guy.... I met with him at length and I asked him that question. I said, 'What do you think of waterboarding?' He said -- I was surprised -- he said, 'I've never found it to be useful.' He said, 'I've always found, give me a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers and I do better with that than I do with torture.'

Add that to the list. Jeese,at this rate we should flip all of his campaign promises to get an idea of the kind of executive we're going to get which............is........a Progressive Liberal executive????????

No idea where Haley stands on those issues, but I presume she'll follow Trump and stand up for Israel.

No idea where most Jews in the US stand on this issue either, sad to say.

My dad, now 76, remembers every address and phone number he has ever had and can remember how to get to places in cities he hasn't visited in decades.

When he gives directions he says things like "at about this point you're going to feel like you want to turn left" - and by gum, you get there and it's true.

I miss the old days of giving/following directions.

Pet peeve: multiple cars are going to the same destination but some drivers don't know the directions. Lead guy says "don't worry, just follow me." This is foiled when followers hit the first light and a car or cars separates the drivers. I refuse to participate.

TK and Appalled are correct on Haley. Lightweight critic sidelined into useless position, McMaster moves up in SC. Win-win.

I really thought I would get some reaction to that 11:09 link.

Seaboard is an international company which is the largest producer of Butterball turkeys in the United States, according to Fortune magazine. It is now being investigated by the Justice Department after allegations that the company has business relationships with senior figures blacklisted by the US government for financing the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah."

What would be the advantage of bringing this news out the day before Thanksgiving?

pagar, who is Butterball's closest rival, and does it donate to Democrats?

Jim Eagle

It is really a cultural and societal shame that our traditional Thanksgiving has evolved from a Norman Rockwell visualized production to a Jerry Springer family food fight.

My thought is with bringing the story out the day before Thanksgiving. I would be really surprised if there are many who still plan to go buy their turkey this afternoon. It is the Justice dept. It's not like it is a fast breaking story that hits the air waves as soon as it becomes known.

Porchlight, I have your answer.
You will need to scroll down a little.

To the best of my recollection, I have never seen a turkey from the number 2 producer.

JM Hanes

Here's my secret sauce for Thanksgiving Turkey, because gravy is the absolute heart of the holiday, and having enough of it is a theoretical impossibility. Seriously, don't turn up your sophisticated noses, because there's a method to this madness:

 photo Brown Gravy Mix_zps0uptqpj7.jpg

It has to be the Brown Gravy mix, not Turkey Gravy, and not Brown Gravy with mushrooms, though you might be tempted. The Morton's is basically like a fail proof thickener; the trick is what you add to it.

Just before removing your turkey from the pan, prick the skin between the thigh and bird, and let the juices flow into the pan with all the drippings. When I'm cooking Cornish Hens, I actually do this about 3/4s of the way through the cooking. Then do whatever you need to do to get every last luscious bit of those drippings out of the pan — use as much water (or your favorite deglazing liquid!) as it takes — and then scrape it all into the gravy.

If you want to get a head start, or don't have much in the way of drippings, you can sauté all the giblets till they are carbonized images of their former selves — the point is not the giblets, but leaving as much as much beautifully browned goop on the bottom of the pan as possible. You will never want that boiled down gray giblet gravy again.

You add your favorite herbs or spices, although it probably doesn't really need it, or try using orange soda instead of water for the liquid. Maybe throw in a few dried cranberries if you accidentally made it too thin. By the time you're through no one will ever suspect the secret behind that gallon of gravy you whipped up.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Beasts! Here is the persimmon pudding recipe. (My eye is better, by the way.)

1 pint persimmon pulp
3 Cups sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 quarts milk
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon soda (which will be dissolved in a portion of the milk)

Stir sugar, salt and eggs until blended. Add persimmon pulp.

Add soda to a portion of the milk (1/2 cup or so) and stir in.

Add portions of flour and milk alternately, blending each time, until all is mixed.Butter a large crock. (We use a large stoneware bowl which is oven--proof.)

Bake mixture for 3 hours at 300 degrees, stirring every 15 minutes for the first hour.

Serve with whipped cream.

pagar, I've seen lots of Jennie-O ground turkey and other turkey products, but never a whole turkey.

I admit it is very odd to see this news at this time.

At an intersection about three blocks ahead they found "chaos".
