Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah, although the First Petulant may have dimmed that a bit.
The WaPo editors criticize Obama and implicitly endorse Trump, who tweeted in support of Israel. The NY Times editors take a pass on this topic, presumably because they are still puzzling out what truth to speak to which power.
The Times coverage by Somini Sengupta and Rick Gkladstone (B-teamers?) is amusingly schizophrenic. The lead is all "Go, Barry!":
UNITED NATIONS — Defying extraordinary pressure from President-elect Donald J. Trump and furious lobbying by Israel, the Obama administration on Friday allowed the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution that condemned Israeli settlement construction.
The administration’s decision not to veto the measure reflected its accumulated frustration over Israeli settlements. The American abstention on the vote also broke a longstanding policy of shielding Israel from action at the United Nations that described the settlements as illegal.
Oh, how can we not admire a guy who defies "extraordinary pressure" from Evil Donald? And who among us supports "furious lobbying"? Stand up to that as well!
Much later, down in paragraph fifteen, we learn there is a bipartisan consensus here:
A range of senators and congressmen from both parties also denounced the resolution, a reflection of the deep loyalty to Israel shared by Democrats and Republicans. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said, “It is extremely frustrating, disappointing and confounding that the administration has failed to veto this resolution.”
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who oversees a subcommittee that oversees United Nations funding by the United States, threatened to take steps that could “suspend or significantly reduce” that financing.
Reaction to the resolution also illustrated fissures among American Jews regarding Israeli policy. Some, like the World Jewish Congress and American Jewish Committee, called the resolution a one-sided measure that would not help the peace process. Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, said in a statement: “It is also disconcerting and unfortunate that the United States, Israel’s greatest ally, chose to abstain rather than veto this counterproductive text.”
Other groups that have grown increasingly critical of the Israeli government’s approach to the peace process applauded the resolution and the Obama administration’s decision not to block it.
J Street, a Washington-based organization that advocates a two-state solution, said the resolution “conveys the overwhelming support of the international community, including Israel’s closest friends and allies, for the two-state solution, and their deep concern over the deteriorating status quo between Israelis and Palestinians and the lack of meaningful progress toward peace.”
The Times editors will no doubt pick a side in due course.

In retrospect Obama was perfect for the role he was destined to play. The man to shut down the bar, put away the glasses, hang up the sign. The aimless positioning of the props, the disconnected snatches of dialogue. He wasn't opening the scene but ringing down the curtain.
He seemed to have grasped the truth in his final days in office, as he contemplated the ruins of his legacy. His parting shot against Netanyahu was rage mixed perhaps with self reproach. But he must have sensed its futility. For it to work he should have done it at the dawn of his term, not at nightfall. Even revenge was a dud.
History was cruel to him. It handed him the car without telling him it was nearly out of gas. He packed it with his friends for the ride only to have it give out embarassingly miles from nowhere.
His mentors were to blame. They readied him for a race that was already over. He came ready for a time, but it was the wrong time. He was set to fulfill a dream but the dream was already in the past.
In this Obama was not very different from most figures in history. Generals are always re-fighting the last war and politicians are always reliving the last generation's revolution -- the one they lost and are determined to belatedly win 50 years later.
1968 was a such a glimmering, romantic might have been that it cursed some of those who lived it or read about it forever. But such magic doors are opened only once and for a moment. Obama forgot it was 2016 and that once upon a times never come again.

Let me emphasize that this guy in my post @1:39 was the highest paid employee of the EPA, was absent from his job for 18 months and was doing nothing but puttering around his house and his second home on Cape Cod, took 5 trips to California that the government paid for which had nothing to do with his job, lied about being on assignment for the CIA so he didn't have to work, and is considered a foremost climate expert.
Also, a liar.

Seems like another loose end. Failure, maybe planned. UN just redefined and rebranded indigenous people globally and their 'traditional territories-' it's all theirs. Last month he (I think it was immigration) rebranded and redefined the 'origins' of people in ME, Europe, Africa, etc. Looks as clear as recent events, pardons, loose ends. Failures. Scorched earth, Clinton and the double coup commie vote brainwashing...🐸

I used to be a BIG Timothy Cardinal Dolan fan...
But, more recently I have observed his capitulation to the homosexual lobby RE St Pat's parade, his yucking it up at the AL Smith Dinner with democrat-abortion-industry honchos, and to be honest, for me, the luminence of his eminence has dimmed considerably.
If those actions are what we see in public, imagine his behaviors and decisions on matters not open to public scrutiny.
Alas, I increasingly see his pastoral sheparding to be not entirely dissimilar with that of el Papa, a man who seems completely muddled in his thinking.

Agree to some extent but I refuse to look on this as anything but a plus for President-elect Trump. Dolan, whatever his internal politics with the Vatican and his archdiocese, still leends an aura of authority to the proceedings, and for that I am grateful.
Plus, perhaps his genial nature will calm a few more of the democrats who are causing such dissension.

Not to strike a discordant note on Christmas Eve,
but...
I see no need to calm the dems, nor for that matter the conventional repubs, ie the uniparty, not the media and others.
DJT crushed the media, crushed Rs, crushed Ds.
This is a change moment, the old guard needs to be vanquished thoroughly, the ground sown with salt.
Or, in other words:

Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.

Sandy,
Talk to me on December 26th. Right now I am getting ready to go to my family Christmas Eve which includes a sister, a brother, a sister-in-law, a nephew, a daughter, and a granddaughter who voted for Hillary. They are slightly outnumbered but this election has caused real angst for them. mostly because they are not on the internet much and believed the MSM.
Because of my family, I would like things to settle down and for actual democrat voters to accept Trump as the legitimate president. He's taking on a difficult job and there are traps around every corner. I think calming the waters a bit would make his task easier.
Have a Merry Christmas!

Pats locked up a first round bye with the win over Denver, JiB. If Oakland wins today and next week, and the Pats lose next week, Oakland will be seeded number 1 and Pats number two. So the Pats have the bye, but still could end up in Oakland in the AFC Championship Game.

daddy,
Left my comment at the paper but Jeebus Crust what an ordeal. Evidently, they are a left wing paper who get lots of harrassing comments because of that and have set up a fence.
LOL.

I'm like Kev. Gotta comment when it tickles me.
Hard to believe watching the Raider's game but can anyone believe there are any Hillary voters in that crowd?

"Obama causing the Senate to defund the UN?
Merry Christmas Eve"
We've been babying these little Israeli bitches for far too long and in doing so enabled their worst, most ruthless instincts. That policy that has ironically made a partition(peace) solution impossible and prolonged the carnage. Overall,we haven't helped Israel...we think we have but we haven't.
There's an ebb and flo to global domination and the U.S, this is going to be difficult for some of you to hear, is on a downward trajectory in terms of military and economic might.50 years from now Mandarin will be our second language. That's just a fact.
Israel is on it's own and the sooner it grows the fuck up and moves toward the partition solution with major concessions given to Palestine, the better. The Trump presidency will write right-wing Zionists cheques it won't be able to cash 50 years from now and the new world powers will not treat Israel kindly. They need to move now while we're still able to give them some bargaining power.
Obama did good dishing out political tough love on this one. This is why I hate the right.....their inability to play 3 dimensional chess and to see 56 moves ahead.
