DebinNC: People outside education have no personal experience re the burdens placed on teachers and all the hoops they have to jump through now that have taken the joy out of teaching.

True dat.

And too many, after having run the gauntlet, simply should find another line of work.

one of the things I've noticed (and the piece is in the same vein as Lanier's work) is how ungrounded in economics much of technologicalism is.

I'm sure there are some tasks that can be automated, and with enough time and money they could be, but it would be an incredible waste of resources to do so.

The Senate Inquisitions must stop. Appointments are partisan. Period.

So let's fortify our nominees and make them into mini-Bannon's.

I'm picturing infantry riding into the battle zone on tanks rather than through mine fields and shelling.

Go on offense.

Defensive candidates get gored and sometimes slaughtered like Robert Bork and others.

I've been through inquisitions at lower levels for lower level jobs where politics determined who was going to get the job and the operating budget to control.

I never played "defend my record." I made the inquisitors defend their's by tying it to their questions.

The Inquisitors all live in glass mansions.

Would Marco Rubio want to be on tape getting his skivvies pulled over his head, diplomatically of course, by Rex Tillerson?

Sen Cool Arrow her knickers wedged so far up ... you get the point.

If I was on the hot seat and Senator Sanders made reference to my net worth or socio-economic status, my reply would be prefaced with a clear reference to his wife's $5 million payday serving on a board of local college she sacked; and, I'd refer to his recent acquisition of a 3rd home on a public servant's salary.

"Shirley making money to live well and have influence isn't a character issue in and of itself, eh Senator?"

And then I'd answer his fockin' question with a smile.

"No, I don't think it will be an obstacle that would detract from my performance in my role as...."

Even opposition Senators might enjoy watching the prima dona "minority leaders" and RINO sellouts being neutralized by nominees.

Knowing your Inquisitors, who they are and what is important to them can go a long way to determine whether one will actually get to be part of a fighting team....no matter what level that team is playing on.

As much as we make fun of Chucky Schumer and his pals in the Dem leadership (and deservedly so), they are not idiots.

They rose to high positions within their party, they've won elections, they know how the game is played.

With that in mind, they have to know that they are in a crappy position. On a national level, the GOP isn't going to lose the House in 2018, and with 25 Dem seats up in the Senate compared to 8 for the GOP, there's no way in hell they're taking the Senate, either.

They're stuck in the minority until 2020 at the soonest. In the states, their position is, if anything, even worse.

Their hold over the MSM is as strong as ever, but the MSM itself is becoming less important every day - Trump's election is proof of that.

And they have to realize by now that Trump is not going to roll over and play nice the way W eventually did, or the way his father did right from the start in 1989.

So what is their game? Is this all just to keep their base riled and rake in the money? They're not idiots - they can't really believe they're going to stop any of Trump's nominees or his policies, can they? They have to know that if they keep pushing, at some point McConnell will be forced to go nuclear, right?

Obama and Senate Democrats used the nuclear option to shift the ideological tilt of the nation’s second-highest court. And if Democrats had controlled the Senate last year, does anyone doubt they would have hesitated to use it to put Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court over Republican objections? Of course they would have. And the next time they are back in the majority, they will not hesitate to use the nuclear option to overcome Republican opposition to a liberal nominee. It is only a matter of time before the nuclear option is invoked. The only question is whether it will be invoked by Republicans now, or by Democrats later.

So why wait?

Yeah, McTurtle. Now that you got your wife confirmed you've got bigger fish to fry.

As I said last night, I believe the left is testing the water for a coup. The lawmakers are fairly impotent, but between the press, Soros money and Hollywood, I don't think it is off the table.

rse

Jane-that would, unfortunately, be consistent with what I am seeing on network news coverage last night and over the weekend.

It also fits with what I am hearing from certain parts of the country.

Old Lurker

The problem, James, is that the left's nutcase bedrock is not going to go anywhere so Chuck can only improve.

Trump supporters took a big gamble with the Hail Mary of giving all the levers to the Reps, obviously hoping for turning the ship away from the iceberg. Many of them have been derided and abandoned by friends and family and cannot watch, listen to or read anything that does not tell them they were fools.

Now you and I are not budging an inch, but there are plenty of Trump supporters who are paying a lot for voting the way they did, and unless the ship can visibly steer away from the iceberg, they might slip back into the easy way of the left.

That is the risk and damage that can be done when a Ryan says, Tax Cuts? New ACA? Well maybe before our August recess but if not then next year sometime. Or McConnell gets his wife approved for her cabinet check but the rest of them can swing in the breeze.

Optics, of course.

But we have a very short period of time to show that the voters did the right thing.

matt, deplore me if you must

I wonder if the Dems boycotting committee meetings is similar to when the Russians did it in, I think, 1950 when the UV voted to go to war in Korea. That didn't work out too well for the communists.

Imagine for a moment that you are Schumer. You want to have a chance at the majority in 2018. Now game this out.

The donor class and the base of the Dems are in full rage at the moment. The government worker contingent of the Dems is alternating between fear and rage. The press is in full rant.

In the meantime, you have a bunch of Dems who are running in Trump states, and who are probably scared to death. All of them are facing a vote that -- if it's pro-Trump, kills their financing in 2018 and guarantees a primary,. If it is anti-Trump, they stand a shot at losing the general.

So, what would be Chucky's dream come true? Forcing Mitch to go nuclear early. That way Mitch has the problems (McCain, Murkowski, et al) of keeping his coalition together for the go nuclear vote, and the vulnerable Dems get to escape casting a meaningful vote.

Mitch, like Chuck, is not stupid. He's gamed it out, too. Which means, unless the President makes it impossible for him, he is not going to rush to nuke option.

Old Lurker

Jane, I agree completely with your 1:33 about a coup test. And they can look to their own bedrock nutjobs, their previously entrenched government, but also the entrenched GOPe players and yes the NeverTrumpers for cannon fodder for their fight.

Unless the ship starts showing that it is in fact turning, then the coup, under cover of a Pence & X post impeachment POTUS become less and less of a long shot for them. There are plenty of self aggrandized players in the GOP who can dream of being the X on that team and who have the power to prevent the ship from looking like it might turn.

Democrats are already recalibrating to prepare for what’s next….

Democrats are now looking at new ways to delegitimize Trump, including a likely mass boycott of his address to a joint session of Congress Feb. 28, which takes the place of an official State of the Union in the first year of a presidency. Lieu said the goal needs to be building momentum toward the midterms with the hopes of taking the majority, and “I do believe that if we win back the House of Representatives, impeachment proceedings will be started.”

Johnson quite reasonably adds:

Well, of course. It’s good to plan ahead, but what about the next two years? I will simply observe that they can’t wait until 2018 and their act is getting old already.

The world is larger than the EmoCrat pirhana pit in DC.

There are many things beyond the reach of EmoCrat death rattles.

Spitballing here.

For example:

One lobe of the national mindset seems completely unconcerned about another terrorist attack.

Another lobe seems to be taking the fight to our enemies overseas (Mad Dog et al).

Our apparent disarray and inaccurate EmoCrat projection that POTUS is making us less safe plays into the strategic hands of terrorist sleeper cells here in America.

In the event of a terror attack that could create a wet-assed hour for Ground Chuck and Pelosi Galore to "rally around Big Daddy Trump" to protect their miserable hides, for at least six months.

How much traction could POTUS gain in the wake of another terrorist hit, one that would be called a terrorist hit, which the Swamp Media would be forced to acknowledge as such?

Captain Hate

sit out committee meetings, sit out the speech. That just shows the undecided middle that you aren't showing up for work

Their strategies behind that extended tantrum in Wisconsin had laughably bad results even without judges really throwing the book at them. I know that oaf Strickland showed up to try and kickstart his political comeback which is still off the rails.

If they were smart, which they obviously aren't, they'd be playing nice nice now and saving their powder (gun, not blow) for the fight against dreamers, which is their only demographic salvation in their abortion loving cult.
