Have you punched a Nazi today? Or even someone with a political vision that differs from yours? Hollywood and the NY Times are down with you! Here is Cara Buckley pretending that political violence is OK if the cause is just:

Any doubts that Hollywood would take sharp aim at President Trump’s immigration order were swiftly vanquished at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. Amid upsets, winner after winner lashed out at the policy, pleaded for acceptance of differences in a bitterly divided time and, in the case of the cast of “Stranger Things,” adopted the stance of political firebrands.

“We will get past the lies, we will hunt monsters,” said David Harbour, a cast member of the Netflix series, which won for best television drama, as the audience roared its approval. “And when we are lost amid the hypocrisy and casual violence, we will punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak and the disenfranchised and the marginalized.”

Well, now. Who among us is not in favor of protecting the weak, the disenfranchised and the downtrodden? I am Batman! But there are a couple of problems - first, Batman was a vigilante and that is not how we like to do things in this country. But perhaps more interestingly, that is not what David Harbour originally wrote, if I can believe the Mediate presentation and my lying ears. Roll the tape [Youtube version here], my emphasis [and I am switching sides here after listening a few more time. My bad. It's easier to hear correctly when NOT reading along, as students of confirmation bias will know.]:

And when we are at a loss amidst the hypocrisy and casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy what we have envisioned for ourselves and the marginalized.

As written, "what we have envisioned for ourselves" can go well beyond protecting the weak, etc. and can easily encompass all manner of political differences. Perhaps Mr. Harbour envisions stronger gun control, just at a guess, and would like to punch some NRA people in the face. Their policies are getting people killed, amirite?

Of course, Mr. Harbour may not be feeling lucky so NRA backers might be safe, for now anyway. But how does he feel about those pro-lifers limiting a woman's right to choose? Is punching them OK? What about folks who don't want to raise the minimum wage - are they oppressing the weak? Are people who don't favor an amnesty for our undocumented friends from south of the border harming the disenfranchised? Hey, punch 'em out! Per Ms. Buckley, that is merely "the stance" of a "political firebrand".

David Burge, as Iowahawk, had a classic tweet noting masked thugs breaking windows during the Inaugural demonstrations in order to protest the imminent arrival of fascism. Just what sort of threats of political violence would actually prompt the NY Times to express concern? Sorry, silly question. Let me rephrase: just what sort of threats of political violence from the left would actually prompt the NY Times to express concern?

MORE: The Times runs the full speech in the story titled "The Best Speeches from the SAG Awards" with the same quote as above. My guess is that Mr. Harbour, who was clearly reading from a prepared text, had his publicist pass that along but improv'ed the lines in question. Or Mediate had hearing lock. Either way, my current view is that the NY Times quotes are accurate. Other listeners welcome.

JUST WHAT HE WANTED: This is the new political order Mr. Harbour advocated and for which the SAG crowd cheered. From the Portland Airport, a Trump supporter knocked unconscious. Although he may have been sucker-punched in the back of the head, not the face.

Interesting. My new home has "water saving" dishwasher and clothes washer. They take about twice as long for a cycle as older ones, so assume use more electricity. Not sure why we are trying to save water in Florida as the stuff oozes out of the ground and they keep giving permits to bottling companies for millions of gallons per day

windansea, I have been making that water argument ever since my kids came home from elementary school and convinced their mother that Dad wastes water. I counter with two points:

1. All the water we drink comes from the Potomac River just upstream from the Great Falls which are a short dog walk from our house. I invite them to go see how much water still flows over the falls even as I am wasting the water. I them show them a map that proves that any water in the Potomac River I do not waste ends up in the Bay then the Ocean in about ten minutes.

2. Now I know that the company which takes the water I waste from the river, cleans it and pipes it to my house so I can waste it, and they charge me for each gallon I accept from them. I pay that bill with my own money and I never ask for help from anyone.

So why is it their business if I let the water run while I brush my teeth. Huh? Huh?

The house I am in now has a shower set up for invalids in the main bath. NO pressure! I have got to do something about this as it takes me forever to rinse my hair.

(Yes, it was set up for invalids. It has an extra-large shower stall to accommodate a shower seat and hand rails.)

I am waiting to see if daughter replaces this shower with a tub. Right now we have two showers. The one in the main bathroom (the one I use) takes up the space of a tub and was designed for the people who used to live here, who were invalids.

She wants TUB as she is used to that (says she needs it for mental health - lol). She is going to get a fairly big tax refund and wants to see if she can afford to have a replacement tub put in. if so, the pipes and showerhead will be replaced at that time.

If the toadies are concerned about job security then the pressure to get serious and take direction from POTUS' appointee, then it may be less of a concern over time.

windansea, I guess the water saving appliances are for the California market which is so big, restrictions there seem to persuade appliance makers they ought to make them nationwide rather than making different models.

The last dishwasher I bought was a Bosch. The sales guy went to great lengths to make sure I was aware of the fact (so he said, but maybe it was an "alternate fact") that only American dishwashers have heating coils.

He said lots of people complain when the get their first German or Korean dishwasher and it doesn't get things dry. But they clearly use less energy than one with a heating coil.

I wanted quiet, and the Bosch fit the bill, but it does leave some water on certain items.

Bring back our light bulbs!

Actually no, forget incandescents and cfls, I go LED all the way. LED bulbs are now a no brainer if you do the math and are now affordable and you get two benefits, lower electric bills and no pulling out the ladder to change the suckers.

Last two homes I change out every bulb to LED, outside LED bug light, overhead PAR 20s and 30s, regular lamp bulbs, even the microwave bulb over the stove. Find them all here also check Homedepot they have some good deals
