Oh, well, this time of year it's better to be driving the southern type routes. You never know about snow and ice.

If it was the fall she could drive here on Rt 80, then take 71 to see Buckeye or Ann, then jog over to you, and then angle down through St Louis to eventually Oklahoma City and then hit 40 west (too far north for Porch). The weather here is supposed to be above normal from Sunday through Wednesday if she's feeling adventurous...

KK,

Ikea's market is younger urban people and their market skews lefty.

Mainly kids who need furnishing for their small apartments or miniscule homes. Their decor is Scandinavian design mostly, but lower quality. Most furniture is assemble-it-yourself.

Because of their target market, I am not surprised at the ad.

Wiki shows while in school Ryan worked awhile driving a Weinermobile and being a waiter, but other than that nada outside of politics. He's a policy wonk with little real world experience but with complete confidence in himself. Ugh. Just for comparison purposes, here's TN Sen. Bob Corker's varied and very successful business career pre-politics. No doubt imo there are multiple House Rs better than Ryan for this moment.

Just saw a quick clip of Ryan leaving Trump Tower today.

And he met with McConnell to strategize (or maybe arm-twist) over confirmation hearings (that are scheduled so close together Chuck Schumer is complaining members have to run between meetings).

I heartily approve of both.

Copy that, MM.

The largest IKEA out in these parts stands over a large Indian burial ground.

The vibe is so bad from the centuries old burial site being covered by first a large amusement park in the 19th century, then metal plating factories during the 20th century, and finally an IKEa in the 21st.

Bones were very close to the surface (as is the water table) would push up through cracks in the factory floors back in the day.

Cal stopped relocating them or archiving them. There are many remaining over a 2 square mile plot.

The burial mound was constructed out of thousands of years shellfish harvesting by local tribes. Bones were buried beneath these. At one point in 1924 the site was excavated by UC Berkeley but covered back over.

Now an IKEA and a huge shopping center sits on the mound site.

It has the strangest vibe for a store. When you walk in you want to get your business done and get out. The behavior of shoppers is aggravated and irrational. The staff is cranky and unhelpful....more than one expects at a Target or WalMart even.

It's bizzaro. But they sure do produce a nice catalog and lovely shopping displays. (ick.)

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Picked up something interesting on Reddit regarding the Jack Ma-Alibaba thing.

Ma said the big thing would be agricultural stuff. I was thinking maybe apples and such.

Reddit says the Chinese have a huge problem with foodstuff being adulterated to increase profit, as well as using unsafe pesticides. Said Chinese middle class would pay a premium for ag products with American standards.

I hadn't thought about that, although I should have, given the past scandals of using lead paint, lacing dog food with ground up melmac, etc.

Willy

I feign surprise. But Trump is getting to me.

KK,

Now that fair creeps me out. I would never build over a burial ground!

This is what happens when a country (and thus a business) goes all secular and doesn't think there is anything to "superstition."

Been talking to people on Twitter about this stuff. A lot of them are convinced that Kek and Pepe are real and control events. I am trying to use Biblical stuff and recent prophecy to show them that it's real, but they are using the wrong names.

You have to be careful, though. So many of them are searching but have been brought up in the non-spiritual way.

At least they are nice to me because I am a grandma. HA!

Joan

Watching 13 Hours was shattering. I kept whispering to my sister, 'They lied to us. They didn't tell us how long this lasted.'

The reports in the newspapers and other places I read didn't give any idea of the distances between the embassy and the compound. They didn't tell of the attacks in the street. What I read was about a few number of rockets that landed on a roof. They didn't report on the length of the battle. All of the mainstream noise was about the riots in Egypt and the video, the damn video being the reason or cause of the attacks. I guess I didn't do any in-depth reading and feel guilty about that, but I never believed it was a video. I believed that the men fighting could have been given help -- by our magnificent Mediterranean armed forces -- I never believed the lies, but, honestly, I was stunned by that movie and wish I'd read the book. If any of you haven't watched it, you should. You'll fall in love with our patriotic fighting men (and any women) all over again.

The defense of the annex was as super-heroic as the loss of Ambassador Stevens was despicably negligent.

The Ambassador never had a chance with a security force of two?

Good lord.

That had nothing to do with Republicans welching on embassy security worldwide according to the "narrative."

"Warriors never retire." And, "It's hard to think about dyin in a place like this with another man raising your kids." Those are two haunting lines that will stay with me for a long time.

Hillary and Obama should be hung. Flat out hung for starting that war and then selling all that ordnance to the skinnies with the black flags.

My sincere hope is that the long arm of the law will eventually grab The Bath House Rat by his rat throat and incarcerate him for this crime in Benghazi. Only too good if they get Hildo Clintoona for it as well.

The lie was brazen. The misrepresentation ludicrous. And the NDA the survivors were coerced to sign..... someone has to break those. Heads need to roll in the interest of national *INTEGRITY*.

We cannot continue to allow sychopants to wipe their posteriors with the lives of American families for the sake of black market thievery.

If you are talking about Wiener, my theory is that he is constantly looking for approval.

Back when Clinton was president Wiener was the go-to guy who was a spokesperson whenever anything went down bad about Bill.

I recall him standing in front of a house in pouring rain with no umbrella. At the time I told friends it was "Let's get Anthony to do it!" whenever anything unpleasant had to be discussed. He was never asked to discuss anything positive, which was telling.

Then he married Huma, and was probably glad to have a pretty wife on his arm even if that child is from a surrogate. He just wanted the attnetion.

Meanwhile, in his need, he got on the cmputer and we all know where that went.

Captain Hate: "And that's on a "conservative" network.
And they can't understand why they're held in such low regard."

Someone upthread mentioned trying to watch The Five again and how Juan and Dana turned them off. Dana is why I quit watching early last summer. She irritated me no end how she bashed Trump. She was so, so prissy. I'd always suspected a bit of a liberal bent in her -- she worked in Washington too long. She always wanted to 'see the Dem's side too much'. I thought Juan (and Bob) were ridiculous most of the time, but you have to expect them to be leftists, that's what they are. Being too charitable to a snake, like Dana often was, turned me off.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Joan,

Totally agree.

I remember her in the late summer telling the viewers that "rally attendance doesn't translate into winning, and I don't want people to be broken-hearted."

That sealed it for me. There is a huge difference between having 1 or 2 large rallies at the end of a campaign, and having them day after day with attendance in the tens of thousands.

She was spouting stuff to depress the vote. Made me so angry I quit watching.

Now I don't have cable at all. She was a reason, as well as Megyn Kelly.

13 Hours is both horrific and inspiring in the same breath.
Horrific in that we left men behind for a political calculus, let nothing interfere with the re-election.
Inspiring in that men like that exist, and do the work that those men did that day.

I am surprised that some here have not seen 13 Hours. It is part of the modern GWoT canon.

BHD 2001 was one of the early movies, for that matter you could go back to Rules of Engagement in 2000, a fictional account.
I also strongly recommend Lone Survivor 2013, American Sniper 2014, and Act of Valor 2012.

Those that haven't seen these movies, should.

The Trump effect. People old enough to retire but stymied by the economy to sell and move feel more confident and those resistent to buying (young first timers) also feel more confident.--

Weren't buyers equally as confident in the bubble? Confidence at the peak of a bubble is always sky high and the Greater Fool theory of investing couldn't exist without it.
Prices have been reinflated long before there could possibly have been a Trump effect. Free money jacks up hard assets; always has, always will. Free money also always ends one way or another.
I could be wrong but do not think I will be.
At least we can hope if I am that the rejiggering will be a little more orderly and the policies pursued afterward will be...well sane would make a nice change.

JiB, I missed your question I presume because word was beginning to float that my Jags had hired a new coach. I'm pleased. Doug Marrone is good, our GM Dave Caldwell has done a good job, and Tom Coughlin brings some discipline to the organization that will back up the authority of our head coach.

BoE, it's halftime. I thought Bama had a golden opportunity to put the game out of reach but failed to do so. To me, Sarkisian isn't showing enough trust in Jalen Hurts. Accordingly, the Bama QB is not having a good game. 14-7, Bama, could have been 21-zip Bama.

If they keep messing around, Clemson will get a lucky break and might steal this game.

Thank you all for the good wishes, but we have lived with mental illness and addiction in our children for a long time now. It is not about parenting, we know. It is about the scourge of severe mental illness and self medication sometimes.

In others, bad choices lead to addiction and incarceration and often down that path to reduced mental acuity and into illness.

One becomes matter of fact, but hopefully we never lose our compassion or our sense of humor.

I think Sheriff Joe, now that he is retired, should open up his own chain of rehab centers, pink jumpsuits, baloney sandwiches and all. We really hoped he would get his hands on our daughter, because 6 months of that would scare most people straight.

It becomes something where tough live is necessary, and boundaries. Addiction is a disease, just as is mental illness, but we don't enable people in their delusions either.

Via Prop 47 and some of the other foolish legislation, the streets are now flooded with petty and not so petty criminals. The cops write a citation and take their drugs away and they have to go out and steal to buy more drugs because they hurt so bad.

My idea is to buy one bicycle, and let them steal it from each other and sell it back and forth between them. Sort of like Obamanomics. She has had a dozen or more Obamaphones, which she sells or has stolen by others to sell.

Her condition, as that of her brother who died, is why I do what I do with addicts and the mentally ill and now the homeless. It is amazing how dysfunctional the system is and how billions get tossed around with little to show for it.

But there is hope and there are some answers. Not all, but some.
