"He was soundbite-ed."

So what, it worked.

Unless he can show his words were sliced and diced into an order he never said, the take away was that he was surprised at how hard the job is and how difficult dealing with congress is.

That does not inspire confidence. I don't think Hannibal said, "wow those mountains are high. I wonder if these elephants can make it over them".

Clarice Feldman

Iggy, As I went to sleep last night it occurred to me that you are probably the brightest person of my acquaintance. I wish I could persuade you to write longer works for at or elsewhere.

Old Lurker

SBW, this town buries enemies by soundbites ... always has. The good ones never utter a phrase that requires reading the whole paper to get it because most people don't. Ditto, clarifying speeches the next day.

Old Lurker

It is not an accident that Rush precedes ANY statement that he knows might be used out of context against him with "I know some people are going to try to quote this next sentence out of context to try to twist my meaning, but...", then he follows the sentence with something like "OK my friends, now wait and see what the MSM is going to twist that into then remember I warned that they would..."

Threadkiller

So what, it worked.

Maybe with Jindal's preferred percentagers that he hopes will join his big tent.

It didn't work on me.

Old Lurker

Clarice, Iggy is not only that bright, but he is very very well read and even more impressively, he digests what he has read and applies that to the next thing he has read, then he distills it all into some post here which has sent me off to more hours of googling and book learnin than just about anybody else.

Threadkiller

"wow those mountains are high. I wonder if these elephants can make it over them".

The equivalent of what he said would be "wow I've crossed over mountains much, much taller than this one, but this one is taller than the shortest mountain I've crossed over."

rse

iggy-the national think tanks that are purportedly conservative and their state policy affiliates like maciver to henry's link or pacific inca or independent institute or tppf are now pushing esas that do ensnare homeschoolers in the template too. the required assessments look at the internalized neural constructs students use just like public and private are now forced to do.

jimmy-the way out is to grasp that it's a trap just like federal budgeting. teachers in privates and publics tell me they would still be able to focus on subjects if parents objected. instead parents hear that the organized lies and believe them.

henty-that plan proves several points i had grasped but can now prove as to how the supposed return to state and local is a lie. by the time i finished with the provided links i was looking at a resilience center in stockholm.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Old Lurker,

I expect better of you than to take a quote out of context, get depressed, and then when you are told that it wasn't the full quote you say "it worked."

Come on! It didn't work with TK or me. The minute I saw that I thought "not the full quote."

That may be why the Dickerson interview had no edits. I think he's done with the games they play.

This morning Maggie Halberman of the NYT has started dome flapdoodle about a book he's reading on Jackson. I have already seen pushback on her distortion.

You HAVE to know they are going to twist what he says. That is why I try to watch the actual videos instead of reading the Washington Post (spit) or reading "reports" of what he said.

All is not lost. Cheer up! You will see.

Maybe it is time to look at some of the permanent staff that is working for elected Republicans.
IMO term limits won't work because lots of power is with the staff & they stay or just get shuffled around when someone new comes in. They are the ones with institutional knowledge about the process.
It was a free-for-all to get Kennedy's staff when he died.

Anyway...I don't want to make excuses for Republicans, but maybe they're getting some crap info & advice on the process & what all is possible.

Old Lurker

You two are not the problem. And ever since Kill Fill arrived, nobody else at JOM is either.

We had dinner last night with friends from Houston who know the Bush family well. Some of my gloom above is not that the progs or Shumer are saying it, but that GOPe is moving into "we told you so" territory. DC is not for amateurs, I was lectured over steaks. I fought them back just fine, but should not have had to.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

That is likely true, especially with people who have been there a while.

However, do not forget the power of the Chamber of Commerce and K Street. They have a lot of input into legislation.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Old Lurker,

Yes, well, we were told that Jeb Bush was a shoe-in and that Trump couldn't function as a viable candidate without a huge campaign staff.

"Washington isn't for amateurs" is to me a particularly elitist attitude. It's like when I saw Congressional staffers speaking derisively about "civilians" who didn't know how things work. It's very good I wasn't at your dinner, because I would not have held my tongue.

There are plenty of people on Trump's staff who understand how things work just fine, and I am pretty sure he does as well.

I keep saying this: look at his cabinet. The WORST cabinet member is Elaine Chou, and she has plenty of experience plus she's Mitch McConnell's wife. You think all of those people like Ross, Mnuchin, Mattis, Kelly, and Tillerson, not to mention Jeff Sessions, would have gone to work for an amateur?

Don't you think that it's quite possible that he has a strategy and a method to what he's doing, explained his plan to them, and they signed on board?

As far as I am concerned, people like your friends are hoping to be able to say "I told you so" but are going to end up with egg on their faces.

Frau Justitia weint

Iggy? Hear, hear, Clarice and OL.

"In California consent of the governed is going down the drain"
For CA readers (and others who are glad they don't live there), here is Susan Shelley who is a bright light placed in the back of the Perspectives section. The courts have said no to the legistators and they are back with the very same scam.

Old Lurker

Now, OF COURSE I know that the POTUS cannot ignore the rest of the world so he can focus elsewhere...it is the nature of international problems that you have to deal with them in real time.

But as important as having Hammas pretend to make nice with Israel, or China with NK, or, or or...

The fact is none of it will matter to us if we don't return this country to the Constitutional basis and the moral consensus which made us.

That's where the shock and awe was needed, and swallowing yet another CR with prog poison in it is neither.

Hey! Did you guys know how well stocked the bar is on the Ledge?

James D

OL, I think President Trump is doing about as well as he possibly could, given the obstacles he's facing:

Deeply entrenched bureaucrats with civil service protection.

The complete madness and totally irresponsible behavior of the Dem party and the MSM.

Dishonesty, sabotage and treachery from the GOPe (including most of the Congressional leadership).

Considering all his enemies, I think it's remarkable how much he has accomplished, and how popular he is. I agree that it's not enough, but it's better than I expected him to be able to do, and far better than any other Republican would have accomplished (if any of them could have won in November, which I question).

henry

We can cheer Pres Trump onward from the ledge. Not a problem.

Old Lurker

Fact is, James, they are less afraid now than they were 100 days ago.

They should be more afraid, not less.

Perhaps some guy in a mail room could be charged with a crime?

Captain Hate

Iggy likes my jokes so he's obviously brilliant.

I know that they plan on taking that role, but talk about elephants and high mountains..

Clarice Feldman

I had a clue that the ledge was well-stocked,OL. Are you going to be bartending all summer?

Old Lurker

I come back to two simple helpful declarations that might have been made on Day One if they had been made and if they had been meant:

1. I want a short bill that announces the repeal of O'care and all of its regulations and taxes, but which delays the effective date for six months, on my desk in seven days.

2. I am giving fair warning that under no circumstances will I sign a CR for any spending in the future, neither for the half year dumped on me by my predecessor starting May 1, nor for any Fiscal Year during my term as POTUS. If Congress cannot present me with Bills they are willing to pass and I am willing to sign consistent with the mandate given me by the voters, then this government will be allowed to close and that will be on them and not me.

Old Lurker

Iggy.

henry

Now reports from Madison suggest the delays in Obamacare repeal are causing weak Rs to not vote for "self insurance" for the state employees. They would rather raise taxes (on this and other matters). Time to get more ammo.

Posted by: Old Lurker | May 01, 2017 at 10:46 AM

OL -- please, please quit underestimating the man. You are *not* the target, OL. That line from Trump reads like manna from heaven to me because it says he is purposefully feeding the hubris of the DC crowd.

He's telling them what they desperately want to hear and, more importantly, what they desperately *need* to believe. I suspect this is a setup line. For instance:

Some of my gloom above is not that the progs or Shumer are saying it, but that GOPe is moving into "we told you so" territory.

We shall see but is it really hard to see how that setup could work to Trump's advantage? I am reminded of some here who were extremely doubtful that Trump was disciplined enough to have thought through and developed a winning Presidential gameplan and, in the event he *did* have that particular skillset, even more doubtful he was disciplined enough to properly execute said gameplan.

But . . . against all odds, he has routed his opposition in magnificent fashion, has he not?

Patience, patience, patience. Finally, OL, it's a continuing thought for me but I think you *seriously* underestimate the separate branch of government thing. [1] The genius of the Founders should not be dismissed so easily, and [2] Congress is first among equals among the three branches. President Trump is extremely smart to not have done as you advised at 11:59 a.m. He has to go forward with a certain amount of patience and I am thrilled that he *is* doing so though I'm sure they are driving him freaking crazy.

It's impressive as hell and speaks well for the success of his first term.

Old Lurker

Oh RG. You are no fun!

If I want to be a grump, I will be a grump.

Jack is Back (Again)!

What is the name of the famous pizza place in Providence. Went there a couple of times when working but can't remember its name. TC mentions it at times.

Off to get a doc notorized. Back later to check.

Old Lurker

But I did think that both ideas in my 11:59 were fully supportive of Congress. In the first, it merely reminds R's that they were awarded control of both houses in no small part because they passed seven bills in the past to do exactly that and this would give them six months to work out the details. The second about CR's simply goes on record that the laws and constitutional requirements for spending and borrowing money is a legal process which his and their predecessors ignored which contributed bigley to the mess we are in.

So I am confused how either of those Day 1 statements would have been damaging.

henry

OL, those statements wouldn't hurt anything if he made them today.

sbwaters

More important than Trump saying the job is more difficult is me telling the RNC on the recorded phone call that, so long as Ryan and the GOPe remain obstructionist, they are not getting one penny of my political contributions.

Old Lurker

Let the record show that I vented my Eeyore thoughts before Rush came on the last 41 minutes to say much the same things.

pagar, a bacon, ham and sausage supporter

Didn't copy that SPAM recipe everyone talked about and I see we have a can of SPAN. Can anyone kindly repeat the recipe? Thanks

Miss Marple the Deplorable

The thing that bugs me about Ryan and the rest of them is that while Trump is being a team player, doing robo calls for special elections, lending his name to fundraising letters and attending a fundraiser in Atlanta, Ryan et al are pulling this passive-aggressive BS and ARE NOT ON OUR TEAM.

I didn't elect Tom Donahoe or any of the other lobbyists. Why do they get more sway than me, except for $$$?

And where in the heck is the concern for the citizens of this country? The only one who actually seems to be concerned is the President. Ryan gets on with his power points and little videos about the Better Way and he sounds like a complete phony.

Bah.

Not on our team!

OL,I was just going to credit you with giving Rush his talking points. :) I'm listening to Rush and thinking, OL has been saying the same thing all morning!

RattlerGator

OL, remember the Landing Teams motif -- okay?

Trump is mounting the greatest invasion of DC ever seen, similar to D-Day. He has "allies" that do not love him, don't trust him, and in some cases are actively working to stab him in the back.

Right?

He has to be extremely smart with how he manages these early days. And he has been.

I don't have a problem with you being a grump, I just think you should be having much, much more fun making your friends who don't believe in what this man is doing -- make them grumpy!

I'm getting much satisfaction by resolutely insisting to acquaintances just how well Donald Trump is doing. Beaming and smiling with extra glee just to drive them more freaking crazy.

Patience is our friend because Trump has shown he is no rash and uncontrollable narcissist -- that's just a role he plays on TV or twitter. And his adversaries just can't quite wrap their brains around that fact.

Old Lurker

No, Gentlejim, I think the gloom is not the arbitrary passing of 100 days, rather from how pulling O'care out by the roots morphed into O'care Lite and even that can't find the votes. Then the CR that not only continues bad spending but denies Trump funding for any of his own (and our) priorities.
