Another important distinction between the two polls, the 2013 poll was about something that might happen, the 2017 one was about something that actually had. People naturally tend to support decisiveness, and to successes already achieved over risks in the future.

>>>A deep recession might explain an extinction-level event for large retailers. But GDP has been growing for eight straight years, gas prices are low, unemployment is under 5 percent, and the last 18 months have been quietly excellent years for wage growth, particularly for middle- and lower-income Americans.<<<

Captain Hate

Porch, is Mr. Porch aware of a drummer in Austin with the last name Sukys?

Also, I was reading the Free Jazz blog when they noted the recent death of Ekkehard Jost, who wrote on the topic. I thought the name sounded familiar and went into my archives where I found a bound Xerox copy of his Free Jazz book that a nutty librarian made for me. I remember trying to read it but not understanding music theory enough AND not having a lot of the recordings he wrote about and provided partial scores for at my disposal. But thanks to Spotify, I can listen to all of them as I'm reading about them, which makes all the difference in the world.

The first chapter dealt with Coltrane from his time with Miles Davis, through the Atlantic recordings and going through the Impulse stuff ending in A Love Supreme. It concentrates on how using modal changes freed up the soloing musicians from not being limited by the standard chord changes, Blues or Tin Pan Alley song structures, and freeing them up to playing whatever they wanted in these very slight chord modulations opening up everything. You can hear it starting with Milestones and Kind of Blue eventually going to My Favorite Things and India, which is where he and Dolphy really took things to the next level.

The reason I mention this is the first time I heard Coltrane, other than some weird one offs like hearing some black art student in my dorm banging it, was an interview with Duane Allman where he talked about being influenced by My Favorite Things. And that really stuck with me. When the Allmans Live at The Fillmore was recorded, that was only four years after Coltrane died. If Gus or anybody else that would know this is reading this would respond: Are the Allmans long songs like Whipping Post, Dreams, and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed built on modal changes?

GUS

Henry!!!!!! I found Dragon's Milk at the new TOTAL WINE, between your office and mine. I walked the MAMMOTH beer area for nearly 20 minutes trying to pick a six pack. I remembered you telling me about the naughty naughty dragon, and........ YUM.

Unfortunately that Henry Threadgill show has to be rescheduled due to Delta flight screwups.

I always loved that Coltrane did something as seemingly bourgeois and pedestrian as My Favorite Things. A tribute of one American genius to another. Didn't know it was an Allman influence - that's cool.

"You can look at any major daily, kev, and do you see that as true or morelikely like iowahawks 'cover it with a pillow until it stops moving."

Junger's statement is in direct and stark contrast to the practice of DeepState Uniparty propaganda at any major daily mediafare.

Iowahawk describes the m.o. of the propagandist.

What's true is that the free press in a free society should abide by that higher standard summed up in Junger's statement. That's a defensible argument.

Putting the Melania Trump story in that post before Junger's statement was an example of how the DeepState UniParty press is not practicing journalism that serves the interest of people who
need to know what's going on.

"Memory of Elizabeth Reed"

One of my all-time fav modal tunes.

Does "Dreams I'll Never See" qualify as a modal tune? Another fav.

All of that explosive recording by Miles and Trane in New York came out of the hardcore ferment in Philly during the 40s and 50s. Knew a coupla cats now gone 10 years who learned to play some sax with Odean Pope. Lots of Bird stories too.

Odean Pope? Now we're talking, KK. Ever hear of Bobby Zankel?

GUS

Capn, short answer. YES. The Allman brothers for the most part were never on my radar screen, UNTIL, I as a musician, recognized what they did DIFFERENTLY and how FANASTIC, their arrangements, modality and musicianship was. They were/are not HICKS. They are EXTREMELY talented and not 3 chord wonders.

Henry, yes, your brother's band is quite good, interesting, but ....NOT LOUD ENOUGH!!

Captain Hate

I sat beside Bobby Z at a Cecil Taylor concert at the Knitting Factory fest in '99. Nice guy; he was surprised I knew who he was. He was in NYC to see his father in a hospital and had to be back in Philly the next morning to conduct classes in a prison; an obscure musician's lot in life. He had a really good release on some dipstick label that sounded like Ornette plays Africa Brass; needless to say it sold about ten copies.

I love Ornette but there's an integral part of his music that gives me a headache. His interviews were some of the most annoying things ever that needed an intervention from Dr. 12 gauge. If you ever get a chance listen (it might be on YouTube but I've got something else to link) to John Zorn's Spy versus Spy; he plays Ornette songs in a thrash rock manner; it gives me a headache so I think he captures the essence. I'm hoping my Free Jazz reading gives me a better appreciation for Cherry because except for Complete Communion, which I loved from the first note, he mostly annoys me.

Happy Easter everyone:

LOL Gus, not sure. They got started by playing together in Baltimore every year for the "Rock the Cure" thing (cure= cure cancer). Nutty stories (PRS was cured by my bro) start there. I think they understand LOUD, as Derek has done a loud stranglehold or two. Fun story, the first year my bro sat in on the Rock The Cure, Derek borowred his guitar for the sound check. Did the swing it around his head by the cord deal.. my bro almost had a cardio event. But is was his intro to BIG CROWDS!

So coooool Henry, I've never owned a PRS, but I have been making offers and some Craigs list phone calls to finally own one. Is that Derek St Holmes???

henry

Gus, yes. PRS gave my bro a PRS guitar on cure... literally the first month my bro had the PRS, Paul asked him to join the ensemble for Rock the Cure. Dereck St Holmes stopped by for the sound check, and did the guitar swing by the cord with bro's brand new PRS. They've been in the band together for the last ten years. The CD is the first thing they have gotten organized (copyright is unforgiving), they have tours planned etc.

I suggest magnesium before bed RG. It's a muscle relaxant, so you'll sleep better too. If you want, soak in an Epsom salt bath, as we do absorb small molecules through our skin. The drop in body temp afterwards helps with sleep too.

And think about some tumeric on those golf days. For me, it's like Motrin cranked up to 11 as far as inflammatory pain relief. Make sure yours has black pepper in the capsule too. Need both to work.
I'm sure KK can add more here.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate the day.

Well, if you were expecting a thoughtful piece, forget it.

Politico has noticed the references to God, but they seem to think that since they don't see him attending church that this is just a nod to the Christian right.

Politico seems to forget that people can change, that the campaign itself changed him, and that he spent a lot of time with Ben Carson and a lot of black pastors.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Clarice,

People say the age of miracles is over, but all you have to do is look at the election and you see the hand of God. How did he win with all of the forces arrayed against him?

The awkward yet heartfelt references to God that President Trump makes (most striking was his blunt statement "We will be protected by God" during his Inaugural Address) seem to me to be coming from a man who wants to express his faith but isn't used to the traditional phrases (unlike how Mike Pence speaks, but he has been a committed Christian for a very long time).

They are blunt phrases, yet are fused with certainty. The actions he has taken seem to underscore this, such as the EO allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood.

Trump's tweet reproduced by Momto2 at 8:44 am is one of the most candid statements made by a POTUS to Americans in my lifetime. How many POTUSes would acknowledge that in the Westphalian jungle, a beef with another Westphalian state (in this case, China's currency manipulation) might need to take a back seat to a greater concern (Xi helping Trump deal with Kim). Trump has recognized that at the moment, there are bigger Szechuan shrimps to fry with Xi than currency.
