I think Gibbon would have been shocked to be thought of as a lefty. He was a Tory, a big fan of Burke, and refereed to revolutionary France as "A nation of slaves is suddenly a nation of tyrants and cannibals."

That said, today's left, with its worship of the environment and concern about keeping everyone in their place, do look awful much like the Torys of 1792. "Even in this country has been tainted somewhat with the democratical infection, [but] the vigilence of government has been exerted; the malcontents have been awed; the misguided have been undeceived; the fever in the blood has gradually subsided..."

North Korea is looking for trouble. If China decides to help, that would be great. If not, we will solve the problem without them! U.S.A.

You are exactly right. He is not going to be predictable; that is a huge advantage, especially in geopolitics. He TOLD us that during the campaign, discussing the element of surprise and how he wants to be unpredictable. Apparently she wasn't paying attention.

For the longest time Ingraham has been an advocate of curtailing illegal immigration, which was a major reason why she backed Trump. One would think she would be happy with Trump's efforts on that score.

Now, because of one incident (in which I think Trump was exactly right) she gets all sarcastic and insulting. AND she doesn't even know the entire strategy, so why not wait and see?

She will never realize that this personality trait of hers, petty and backstabbing, is exactly why she didn't get the press secretary position. Trump didn't want the face of his administration to be a bitter and spiteful woman.

I've often wondered what Gibbon thought of the relationship between the colonies and England as he was wandering the world reading original texts in preparation for his huge work. It wasn't unusual for anybody with a functioning cortex to be alarmed by the French Revolution as Jay Winik's The Great Upheaval makes clear.

Like many educated folk of that era, he wrote a gazillion letters which, of course, got published. It's probably not hard to find out his thoughts.

Today is the home opener:

Jim Eagle

Happy Birthday, Teddy. Look forward to seeing you and your cake on FB.

Beautiful weather here in The Hammock. Dunes restoration going good. Started native flora plantings but all the walkovers are still closed, so you need to go all the way down to the public access in order to walk the beach. But at least they are expediting the environmental redtape and making great progress.

Remember that kerfuffle about a Long Island Chabad being the access point for Trump to work with Putin? Well here is their rabbi's response: More fake news but this time made up fake news.

Captain Hate

Using an iPad makes it rough to switch between browsers without losing the text here for multiple c&ps. Listening to Crewe kollidge radio a listener pointed out, accurately it sounds like, that the horn lines in my 8:59 were based on this:

Appalled, so many books and so little time.

Man Tran

Re the flying and WX comments yesterday, I spent 12 hrs getting home last night. Picked the best moment to punch through that T-storm line crossing Indiana in the morning and only had about 10 min. of stark terror. Hate the double bind of having to slow down to keep from having the wings ripped off while that causes you to spend more time in the gauntlet. Managed the timing so the first fuel stop is above freezing and no longer gusting to 35 kts. Then the second stop leaves me with a tire just holding the rim a half inch off the runway. Not sure what happened, but it may have been a slight lateral push at touchdown popping it off the bead. Luckily they had the (unlikely) tube and tire combination on the shelf so I didn't even have to refile for the last leg home. Boy that Grey Goose tasted good.

Ron Estes is running TODAY for Congress in the Great State of Kansas. A wonderful guy, I need his help on Healthcare & Tax Cuts (Reform).

This side of Ingraham's personality is likely the reason Trump didn't want her.

Captain Hate

Politico loved the Final Solution.

Man Tran, that is some real flying adventures.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

That's one of the reasons I quit posting most stuff from Politico. I also have dropped The Hill.

The news from most quarters is so unreliable, if not downright loony, that I have sort have made up my own intelligence agency with a few people on Twitter plus the President, Press Secretary, and cabinet officers.

I read Conservative Treehouse but they sometimes dive into conspiracy so I am cautious with them. I have quit listening to almost all talk radio because they absolutely do not understand what's going on and are simply ginning up controversy for ratings.

I might as well live in 1950's Moscow and have my ear to Radio Free Europe. THAT is how bad I think our news companies have become.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

From the Reddit site, an absolutely fascinating picture taken by Sean Spicer election night, just as Trump and his peole got the news they had won:

NPR is hopeful of Repub trouble in KS "This is a heavily Republican district that includes Wichita. It's one that Trump won by 27 points in 2016. But in a low turnout election, almost anything can happen."

Should we be worried? Just a guess, but I'm thinking "no"

4:00 pm || Meets with National Security Advisor LTG H.R. McMaster and National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn

6:30 pm || Has a working dinner with senior military leaders; State Dining Room

My wife read articles on the United passenger assault. She says the guy was a doctor, Chinese American, who refused to give up his seat because he needed to get to a patient.
Ai yi yi.

A hyphenated American?

That explains the girl-like screams.

Captain Hate

A lot of the Horde were less than completely sympathetic to the bumped doctor, stating that his patients surely had backup caregivers and that he didn't deserve any more consideration than anyone else on the flight. The more I think of it the more I agree with that while thinking UAL really screwed up by doing this after passengers were seated. And not negotiating better by upping the compensation to the bumped.

I don't know if the guy self identifies as hyphenated but, yes, the story is generating red hot outrage in Chinese communities.

Carp. My "link to last page" back on page one doesn't seem to work.
What's wrong with it?
I noticed several times that a couple of posts were needed to get it right. But I typically didn't see a difference between the good/bad links when this happened.

How it should look, Jim

How to feel old... your 12 year old asks "who was Madonna"?

I bookmark a lot of webpages under many categories - meaty editorials, economics, curious, journalism, etc.

Over the last six months, many things I might have filed by subject I have, instead, filed under journalism. Why?

Trump was prescient to realize that to drain the swamp the major problem to be addressed is to disinfect legacy journalism.

Corporate media that should have exposed workaday Washington decided decades ago to sleep with the parasites.

As Trump would tweet: SAD!

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Seems like UAL could have found someone to cover for the one seat they didn't get as well. Might be slightly better advertising than shooting themselves in the head as they did.

OTOH, I wonder if any media will check out the purported doc's story.

Have a good day everyone!

My 9th graders are discussing "One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich" today. Alexander Solzhenitsyn is one of my favorites!

Prayers for our President.

Before anyone gets the idea that I don't side with the passenger I will state unequivocally that I 100% side with him.

Screaming in the face of a goon squad isn't how I role, so that is the only personal beef I have. Reminds me of professional soccer faux-injuries.

As far as I'm concerned the drunk crew that needed this flight should have booked this flight and United, knowing that their next ba5ch of profit depending on these bums should shitcan them for cutting it so close.

Spent too much time in Chicago banging someone other than the person you married? Tough. You are fired.

CH is absolutely right. They spent no effort proposing offers that would have enticed some student off of the plane.

Instead they used a lottery machine?

F' United and the plane their 4 bums rode in on.

Seems to me that UAL could have sent the crew to St. Louis by bus and avoided all this nonsense. This is going to cost UAL BIG money.

Jack is Back!(On his iPhone)

We were eye witnesses to a United forced renewal and baggage weight limit on the same flight from Dulles to JFK in 2000. First they removed a young mother and baby fo 2 deadheader employees and then refused to load all bags including one guy's who was heading to Buenos Aires.

He was livid and a wonder he wasn't removed himself. Later that year using same flight the gate manager who did the removals was back on the same flight removing another pax for the same reason as before. A real witch. Someone called her out and she threatened to remove him. Everyone on board hissed her as she turned and walked away but not before giving us all the finger. True story and everyone just laughed

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Might have already been linked but a truly disgusting witch hunt at the University of Texas based on the false accusations of some homosexual student results in the suicide of the falsely accused.
It's probably wrong to hope UTA is put out of business by the resulting lawsuit.
But I do.

Old Lurker

There is a price at which the supply will match demand. Eco 3. UAL just didn't want to pay it, and they sent in their Pinkertons to get what they wanted for less. Worked for Steel Mills and Coal Mines, right?

That CEO sounds like he used to work for the EPA or IRS under Obama or something.

Enjoy your press guys, you earned it and more.

Clarice Feldman

Is this guy the United passenger?https://scallywagandvagabond.com/2017/04/david-thanh-duc-dao-unites-airlines-doctor-overbooked-flight/

Old Lurker

So what, Clarice, even if true? Nobody says he was misbehaving during boarding or seating in fact until they picked him to get off.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

The entire country has gone nutso.

I am very happy ignoring most of it. And people wonder why I am perilously close to being a hermit.

"It's probably wrong to hope UTA is put out of business by the resulting lawsuit. But I do."

Not wrong at all. But let's also remember the complicity of the Obama DoE that pressured universities to set up the kangaroo courts, not that the unis needed a lot of encouragement.

While I'd rather there be no DoE at all, Trump's DoE needs to do more than just rescind the Obama policies, it probably should have a policy of punishing universities that take Kafka's "The Trial" as a blueprint.

Old Lurker

None of this would have been big news except that flying these days is like walking through a room of hypersensitive power hungry wannabees who are armed and looking for someone to abuse. You had better not dis the baggage guy at the curb or you might never see your bag again. You had better not dis the human check in person, if you have waited long enough to see one, or else you will certainly not get to the gate on time. You had better not be one pound over the weight limit or UAL will charge you an extra hundred bucks or something for the crime. You damn well better smile when the thugs at security feel up your wife or you will be led off in handcuffs. Don't bother asking the gate attendant if the plane is on time. Better smile at the over the hill flight attendant or she/he will make you pay. And now, you'd better smile when you discover that the fine print on page x of some contract of passage means that while you thought you paid for a full fare seat, in fact all you have until the flight takes off is a Standby Seat giving the airline the right to boot you off but send your bags on. And if your bag is not on the carousel when you land, then go have a word with the nice people in the baggage service office and take a number and read the fine print.

The Chicago lottery software randomly picked a couple and was 1/2 way to their goal. Up next? A ballerina-like frail doctor.

I don't buy it.

Sounds like the manager sized up the crowd.

Old Lurker

UAL Market Cap down $675 million this morning.

Captain Hate

I think the only person in this whole UAL dustup I'm sympathetic with is the security muscle who got suspended. First, he has to go on the plane to remove somebody because the gate crew acted like idiots. Second, the guy acts like a whining vag and makes his job as difficult as possible. Frankly I'd have probably tuned the guy up too.

Everybody else @ UAL needs to get off my lawn.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

As I said, the whole country is acting squirrely.

One thing about the UAL thing; it had daughter and granddaughter as angry as Old Lurker, so it's nice to know that some things will still unite the country!

Old Lurker

Old Lurker is not angry about UAL, MM. OL is angry at Libs, GOPe and most all of government. But OL is fed up with corporate arrogance when it rears its head.

Basically, OL is just tired of everybody telling him what to do and what to spend his money on so others can have it!

Old Lurker

OL is reminded that tax week is not a good time to find him in a good mood.

I told Mrs. OL that we would be writing all those checks on Friday so that we can feel crucified too.

Janet 🚬

I'm sure many good people work for United. I hate seeing an entire company get ruined.

Imagine if the MFM covered the PP videos like they are covering this story.
Planned Parenthood was caught selling baby eyes, brains, arms & legs, & nothing happened to them. No MFM screaming. The people that caught PP are in trouble.

Perhaps the people that should be prosecuted in this United story are the people that filmed what happened.
That's how it works now, right?

Captain Hate

Speaking of taxes, I strongly suspect that my state taxes got cranked to pay for Johnnycakes Medicaid expansion; the one that he said would "pay for itself by Washington returning money to Ahia". I can't wait for that whiffle headed goof to be gone.

Old Lurker

Janet "I'm sure many good people work for United."

Flown lately, Janet?

Name three.

Just kidding!

Imagine how upset people would be if they found out that United was getting huge amounts of money from the US government. (For all I know, they are.)

I always thought that the entire PP thing should be frames as since it is obviously a business, why is the government funding them?

It's obviously a money-making source for the upper level employees. Cecile Richards makes a high 6-figure salary.

It is no different than Jese Jackson's scam charity or the Clinton Foundation of government social work programs. The object is to get lots of money from taxpayers in order to live a lavish lifestyle.

The poor, or unwed pregnancies, or climate change are just the excuse to divert all that money into their pockets.

If they are so concerned about abortions being available, let's see them work for free and pay a fee to the government for each abortion performed. I would bet THAT would stop abortions quicker than anything.
