There are reports that China is massing troops on the North Korean border. The current explanation is plausible:
As concern mounts that North Korea will use a national commemoration on Saturday to conduct its sixth nuclear test, claims the Chinese army has amassed 150,000 troops including medical teams on the border with North Korea have been repeated on the front page of China's state-owned Global Times newspaper.
...
The People's Liberation Army has recently expressed concern that northern Chinese towns were at risk of nuclear pollution from North Korea's tests, and said that contamination would not be tolerated.
"Not tolerated"? Kind of an aggressive tone which is then dialed back:
China's nuclear envoy Wu Dawei met with his South Korean counterpart Kim Hong-kyun in Seoul to discuss the North Korean crisis.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported the two sides had agreed that if North Korea conducts another nuclear test or missile launch, China and South Korea will carry out any future United Nations Security Council resolutions that are passed.
Well, fine - the troops are there for emergency decontamination and the Chinese response will be to work more closely with the UN.
But in my fantasy, the US fires a few cruise missiles at North Korea and China responds by sending in its troops to defend its ally from imperialist aggression. And while they are there, they depose Kim Jong Un and replace him with a saner and more pliable heir to the throne, to wit, the son of the recently murdered half-brother of Kim Jong Un.
Obviously this is a long-shot. As best I recall the Chinese military has not demonstrated a particular flair for moving troops quickly - they are hostile but not especially agile or mobile, unless times have changed. On the other hand, in a year of surprises why not one more?
ERRATA: OK, the Chinese army looked good in 1950. But against North Vietnam in 1979, not so much. Business Insider summarizes a Congressional Research Service report from 2016:
China's ground forces
While China commands the largest ground force in the world, it is plagued by mobility problems.
China lacks sufficient transport helicopters, and still largely relies on trains for transportation across the mainland.
The ground forces mainly exist to deter and manage conflicts with China's borders, and their goal is to increase mechanization by 2020.
The Weekly Standard covered the NoKo version of Game of Thrones.
maryrose,
My good friend here and I in Indiana are 100% in agreement with you.
Through the Clinton years, Lugar, as head (or ranking member) of the Foreign Relations Committee, was the go-to Republican for foreign policy on the Sunday shows. When Bush won and got Powell as SOS, suddenly, no one wanted to talk to Lugar.
It's like the McCain problem, and I believe it is withdrawal from the spotlight which affects them so adversely.
They really do need to retire. Sitting here at age 68, I can honestly say 75 is long enough. Go home to your grandkids, your garden, or take up woodworking or something.
I think Lugar said this to get on TV. Watch and see if I am not right.

Don't know about the condition, but my uncle had a vertebrate fusion in 1969. It was very painful and he had to wear a cast for something like 3 months. He was a vet and just retired 2 years ago.
That was a long time ago and I am sure things have improved.

Dorset
Shropshire
Ramboullet
Hampshire
Southdown
Cheviot
Dartmoor
Oxfor
Lincoln
There are dozens more. I used to raise Dorsets (the BEST breed in my opinion, because they have both spring and fall lambs and an al=purpose wool).
Dorsets have curved horns on both rams and ewes. (Polled Dorsets do not have horns. I like the horns.)
I had a ram who was trained to shake hands and drink from a hose. He also like a sip of my dad's beer.
I showed at the fair for about 5 years when I was a kid. My dad continued raising them because he liked them as companions when he was doing stuff around the farm.

MM-
:) I was yolking about AC in Indiana hotels. My first wife's mom was an heir to the fortune of the man who opened the first Holiday Inns in Indiana (Plymouth IN I believe it was).
And their current cash cow is the airport HI and the one out at the Pyramids in Naptown.
The standing joke in the fam was that Holiday Inns were the only hotels in IN that had "decent AC" (back in the 50s and 60s).
I didn't realize that Dick lived in DC. Serves him right to suffer. All that lobbyist cash and he's on the sidelines. Tough not being a boss, no?

Daddy, do you have reentry shock when you arrive home after a long trip and discover that nobody in your house including your dogs cede to you that same autonomy?
Funny you should mention that OL:)
Currently in my world puppy dog Nelson is in the situation of the son of Themistocles, from his famous comment to his wife on "Who Rules the Greeks."
From Plutarch's Life of Marcus Cato: (Chapter VIII)
[Once, in discussing petticoat government, he observed: "All men rule their women; we rule all men; but our women rule us." This remark, however, is a parody of a known saying of Themistocles, whose son one day persuaded his mother to obtain a number of favors from his Father. Themistocles said to her: "My Wife, the Athenians rule Greece, I rule the Athenians, and you rule me. But the son rules you; so let him be sparing of the authority which makes him the most powerful person in Greece despite his want of sense."]
ergo, Nelson rules the world.
On a related note, thank goodness Baron Trump currently rules today's planet instead of Malia, Chelsea, or Amy Carter.

If you live here, you sort of get used to people on the coasts thinking we are some sort of 3rd World Country, populated by rubes and meth addicts.
Most of the time it serves us well, as people leave us alone. I call Indiana "The Stealth State."
I figured you probably knew better, but I posted what I did to let lurkers know the true state of affairs.
However, I did gro up without AC. My parents bought a farm when I was in 5th grade. It had an Italianate house with tall arched windows and brick construction. (I mean that the walls were also brick, not just the facade. 2 1/2 bricks thick.)
No A/C. In summer that sucker would heat up like a kiln. I spent many a summer night sleeping on the picnic table outside.

If UAL gives in completely it will be at the mercy of every a-hole passenger who thinks he can disobey instructions, including would-be terrorists
I don't think so, because the unique (I hope) factor was bumping people after they'd boarded rather than before. If everything played out exactly the same, except that it happened at the gate rather than on the plane, as it should have if the employees in question had the slightest good sense, there would have been no blood, no ugly viral video scene, nothing at all memorable.
Bumping somebody already on the plane shouldn't ever happen (excepting the plane being over the weight limit or something equally freakish), and if the airline's employees were competent, it wouldn't.

Lou Dobbs has on General Keane. Here's some of that.
Missed much of the initial question answer part:
General Keane:...and this talk about moving Assad out, listen, the reality is that what Putin has done is assured the Alawite Regime is staying in power, and no one is going to force them out. Now if Putin believes that Assad is a liability, certainly he'll change out the Leader, but the Alawite Regime, it's infrastructure, will definitely stay in power.
Lou: Stepping back from that, the fact is 59 Missiles striking an undefended Airfield, from which BTW, the attacks were mounted against the very same town that was hit with those chemical weapons. This is not...a "Game Changer." It is not a moment of "Inflection" in the relationship either between Syria and Russia, or the United States and Western Nations and Russia. Why are we expecting so much to come of this?
Gen Keane: Well the back drop is the Obama Administration had such reticence to ever use even limited military action. Secretary Kerry I know for a fact recommended on multiple occasions limited Military action to force a Political solution. Always rejected. So I think what has happened here, is the signal is being sent by the Trump Administration that at times we are ready to use Military force, and also to help get Political solutions. And I think that is the loud message. it's not going to be a Geo-political Sea Change as a result of 59 Cruise Missiles to be sure, but remember this, in 1995 Bosnia/Herzevgovina, war raging there, Milosevic pounding the people there. We, a reluctant President Clinton, fired some Air Strikes in there. As a result of that we had the Dayton accords and the War stopped. So limited Military action does have a place, and we'll see if something comes of this. We want something to come of it, but you have to maintain a healthy skepticism about that as well.
---------------
Lou:...Now we look to North Korea. The Carl Vinson Strike Force in the Sea of Japan. Ahhh, where are we headed here? There doesn't seem to be any clear outline of either an agreement or even the suggestion of one about what to do with North Korea between the Trump Administration and President Xi. Are there Red Lines in North Korea?
Gen Keane: What I think that the Carrier Strike Group is largely about is the anniversary of Kim Sung Il, the Father of the modern North Korea's Birthday Anniversary Weekend. Most Intel analysts believe that what's going to happen is Kim Jung Un will fire his 6th Nuclear test. And I think the Carrier Strike Group is going up there to reassure our Japanese and particularly our South Korean allies, that the United States is here. This is not the Obama Administration with strategic patience. It's not by accident that General Mattis made his first visit, days after taking his Office, to South Korea and Japan. Rex Tillerson followed that up a few weeks later, and for the same reason also had a visit with China. I think President Trump has made a decision to do what 3 other Presidents have done and failed at---and that is try to leverage China to coerce North Korea to de-Nuclearize. That is what Florida was about. However he had a little stronger hand in Florida because of the Syrian Cruise Missile Attack. That didn't go unnoticed certainly by President Xi. He knows he's dealing with a different President than when he was dealing with President Obama. How much impact that will have, I have no idea, but we all want it to have some impact. The Strike Group is not going up there for confrontation. This is about reassuring our allies primarily, and obviously to send a message to the North Korean's about the kind of capability we do have.

The best tort you can bring is one with a video and lots of emotion the jury can identify with. Right now United is deciding how many millions it is willing to spend, and how much he can get the police people to kick in. (There is probably a cap on their damages - none on United).

me·lis·ma (mə-lĭz′mə)

A passage of multiple notes sung to one syllable of text, as in Gregorian chant.

Cleo Fartlion was flying coach to Charlottesville and shortly after takeoff decided to go sit in first class. He finds an empty seat and settles in. The flight attendant notices and tells him he’ll have to move back to coach.
So Cleo Fartlion tells her “The space time coordinates you refer to as coach are continuously overtaking the space time I occupy with a velocity approaching 600 mph. It's just your limited perception and lack of mental capacity that prevents you from appreciating that here and there are actually the same place in the universal frame of reference all occupy.”
The attendant mentions this to the steward who goes over and tells Cleo Fartlion that since he is not ticketed for first class he will have to leave. So Cleo Fartlion tells him “Arbitrary class distinctions are historically discredited social constructs used to oppress the less fortunate and as self respecting vanguards of modern enlightenment enlightened by redemtive self awareness we are morally obliged to disregard such offensive, harmful conventions.”
The steward mentions this to the captain, who tells the copilot “take over for a minute; I know how to deal with this”. He makes his way over to Cleo Fartlion and politely whispers something in his ear. After that Cleo Fartlion meekly gets up and returns to coach. When the captain returns to the cockpit the copilot asks “What did you tell that guy?”
The captain replied “I just told him that first class wasn’t going to Charlottesville.”

Its actually pronouced "cleek" like in the old golf irons.
French is not that difficult because the words are pronouced as they appear. Everyone overdoes the pronuciation to sound "french" when if you just pronounce them correctly you will sound french.
Does that make sense? I don't think so. Everyone thinks there is a special French accent but in reality there isn't. More confusion, I know.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | April 11, 2017 at 08:25 PM
Jane,
I don't think it's that simple. UAL foolishly decides to boot the passenger after boarding. Passenger then understandably becomes upset. Passenger then foolishly resists the lawful orders (I'm assuming their lawful authority since I haven't followed this closely) from security personnel to deplane. Security controls and removes passenger from plane (I agree their method of removal was not the best choice).
The one video I watched didn't clearly show the interaction between passenger and security. I'm sure there are others out there, but I don't really care. Plenty of idiots involved.

I saw the other day that Andrea Mitchell was damning this Administration as liars. That reminded me of Andrea Mitchell spilling the beans in an interview, much like Evelyn Farkas did, that she knew all about Valerie Plame being CIA, but then, realizing she had stepped in doo doo, lying about it when being grilled by Don Imus as to her evident lying. So here, with elaboration from TM, is refresher from 2006: Andrea Mitchell
Murray: Do we have any idea how widely known it was in Washington that Joe Wilson's wife worked for the CIA?
Andrea Mitchell: It was widely known among those of us who cover the intelligence community and who were actively engaged in trying to track down who among the foreign service community was the envoy to Niger. So a number of us began to pick up on that. But frankly I wasn't aware of her actual role at the CIA and the fact that she had a covert role involving weapons of mass destruction, not until Bob Novak wrote it.
---------------------
So if Andrea's looking for liars all she has to do is look in the mirror.

daddy, Regarding Andrea Mitchell, I offer the following.
Back in the 80's, when my daughter was small, I used to keep the TV on all day while doing chores. (This was before we had cable TV and talk radio.)
Reagan had a press conference. Included were his tax returns. (A recurring theme amongst democrats). Andrea Mitchell asked him why his charitable donations were so low.
Reagan replied that many of his charitable donations were to individuals as opposed to organizations, and thus were not deductible; and that he didn't worry about the listing on the tax return because Scripture says to give in secret.
I heard this live while I was dusting.
Then, Tom Brokaw came on at 6 PM and they talked about the press conference.
Andrea Mitchell said that when Reagan was questioned about charitable giving, "He had no explanation."
I stood in my family room with mouth agape. I have hated her ever since. She is a liar.

Tell me Andrea's BFF Colin Powell had not told her about Plame. Remember that odd bit where the judge saw a name in her interview diary and said he really thought he had to call her to testify and then the NBC lawyers really went full throttle to keep her off? Remember that bit about "what one of us (Andrea, Russert and the 3d clown whose name I'm forgotten) knows all of us know".

3d clown
Judith Miller?

GentleJim,
It may not be that simple but that is precisely what it will be settled on as the risk is a jury will decide it's that simple.

Fitz, Poweel and especially should all be strung up by their gonads when all is said and done Clarice.
BTW,
I thought I heard heard earlier the FBI is refusing to turn over to the Intel Committees documents they requested related to Susan Rice.
2 Questions:
1) Anyone have a link to a story on that, and
2) Who does the FBI work for?
Posted by: daddy | April 11, 2017 at 10:04 PM
Fitz, Powell, and especially Armitage...
Grrrr

Looks like Slavery is making a comeback in Libya:
BBC: African migrants sold in Libya 'slave markets', IOM says
Africans trying to reach Europe are being sold by their captors in "slave markets" in Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.
I don't doubt that slavery is occurring, but I can't trust the messenger here since I can't put it past them to be spreading the "Slavery" meme to coerce Europe into taking in millions more refugee's.

For those who followed our bizarre story of the gunman at Beluga Point who went on the lam and then the Cops closed the Highway a second time for President Xi's site-seeing visit with our armed gunman still on the loose, the story is over. They just found the gunman's body washed ashore at, you guessed it, Beluga Point.
Guess that means the dogs and I can head down toward Beluga for tonights walk.

This turns out to be a true internet meme. Now 127 years was 124 at the time of the post.

"Through this inscription I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic party I have watched it closely since the days of Jackson and know that all the misfortunes of our nation has come to it through this so called party therefore beware of this party of treason."
The backstory is interesting.

Slavery was going on in Sudan recently; there has been some non MFM coverage of US Christian groups purchasing freedom for the enslaved. The MFM steers clear of stories that make Is-slum look bad compared to the Unpeople of Jesusland.

In the America I live in, it's pronounced "click" and not cleek. I've always thought of it similar to the split in pronunciation of caramel (in my family: carmul=wrong, care-uh-mel=correct).

It is similar, RG. but not identical.
In the latter the split is correct.
In the former, less so. :)

that gunman was one of ours, daddy. A former paratrooper from Ft Richardson. Not sure where he served but the likelihood was both Iraq and Afghanistan. Will be learning more over the next couple of days. Poor, broken men who gave their all for naught.
