Students who free ride on others will suffer on the exams

Only if there are exams.

Remember, standards have been lowered so severely that universities can't make the bottom line if any real testing is allowed to occur. Gotta collect those dollars.

MUST-READ-> Why the ‘Trump’ State Department still loves George Soros | depressing but true.

And six Republican senators who asked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to probe whether foreign aid is promoting a progressive agenda around the world just got an abject lesson in how.

They got their answer not from Tillerson or anyone around him, but from a mid-level career official at the Bureau of Legislative Affairs, Executive Secretary Joseph E. Macmanus. He pretty much told the senators to take a hike.

They’re right. Of 553 key positions in the executive branch that require Senate confirmation, only 22 have been confirmed so far, according to the Partnership for Public Service. And it’s not just because the Senate is dragging its feet. There are 44 nominations awaiting confirmation and a whopping 488 awaiting nomination.

K. T. McFarland has been asked to step down as deputy National Security Advisor to President Donald Trump after less than three months and will
become U.S. ambassador to Singapore, according to a person familiar with White House personnel moves.

The departure of the 65-year-old former Fox News commentator comes as Trump’s second National Security Advisor, Lt General H.R. McMaster, puts his own stamp on the National Security Council after taking over in February following the firing of Michael Flynn.

"Would we have bombed Assad, if he had merely used conventional explosives delivered by either artillery or aircraft to kill 80 civilians? Are those killed by gas more dead than those killed by explosives? Last July, vacationers in the beautiful French city of Nice were attacked by a jumped up jihadi driving a large truck; he killed over 80 persons. I saw no visible French retaliation against the Muslim world or truck makers."

Kristol: what Trump did in Syria was a clear improvement over the JEF. McMaster inspires confidence. Juan Williams: there is no Trump doctrine. Kristol: Kushner/Bannon feud isn't good because Kushner is in the driver's seat. Boothe: this feud is no big deal.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Assad SAID he had gotten rid of the gas. He had not.

The question, as Tillerson said, is whether Russia was complicit or incompetent.

The other thing is that we have troops over there and if there is MORE gas in other places, they are at risk if ISIS or al Nusra get their hands on it.

And should ISIS get its hands on Sarin, it very probably would wind up here, especially is we keep having to take in refugees due to the ninth District Court now thinking it runs foreign policy and immigration.

Setting up safe zones in Syria is the solution to the refugee crisis and the security that the Gulf States and the Saudis and non-lunatic Europeans are worried about.

"Only if there are exams."

Yes, though maybe even more important, since there are usually exams, is whether anyone can fail. One mustn't upset the little snowflakes with anything less than an A-, you know.

sbw-as a 21st Century Skill, collaboration has roughly the same purpose ultimately as what is laid out beginning on page 5 of this pdf. http://omega.cc.umb.edu/~sociology/journal/Vol62PDFS/Zalanga.pdf

Group work at this point is not about teaching a subject and it is also tied closely to the explicitly declared desire of elite colleges and universities to no longer have their entering freshmen classes be majority white.

jimmy still gives exams but in many majors now that is very uncommon. Under the Universal Design for Learning in K-12 that was part of Common Core and is now part of the fed ed law, exams delving into a body of knowledge are viewed as discriminatory. It's certainly not what the Engage NY curriculum is pushing nationally.

The Rockefeller F is pushing a technique called CFSC--Communication for Social Change in all its philanthropy work. I have written about it, but CFSC and collaboration as a 21st century skill are very close in technique.

henry is right that the mind is not a computer processor, but that doesn't alter the current aim to create the internalized mental maps that will act like software guiding predictable behavior.

That freire quote fits with cfsc and Collaboration and also what Communication as another of the 4 Cs of 21st Century Skills are getting at. Remember Disney is a big pusher pf P21 as is Lego.

That is super-interesting.

I grew up reading Marvel comics, which I pretty much forgot about until the movies started coming out. I have been very distressed to read all of the bizarre things they have been up to, like making Thor a woman.

I see in the comments that there has been a shift in leadership and as usual, what was a pro-American cultural format has become leftist and of COURSE hired a Muslim who is now spreading hate messages.

At least a mystery I hadn't understood has been solved.

"But, you do admit that it is interesting?"

She agreed that it was interesting but irrelevant.

Like it or not, there's a gossipy component of history that is inescapable. The book I'm reading on Elizabeth would be tediously dull if it didn't have vignettes about what a spiteful biznotch she was to her bang toys and their wives.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

It is my understanding that Tillerson has spoken of a POLITICAL change in the governing of Syria. That would be an election or an abdication by Assad to someone acceptable to interested parties (not counting the terrorist groups).

Therefore, we do support regime change but not in the Libya or Mubarak in Egypt type.

What Tillerson is looking at is an ordelry transition down the road.

Assad cannot be trusted, since he kept the sarin gas. He will have to go, as security of the region depends on not having that stuff lying around.

Israel, by the way, hasn't taken Assad out because he is propped up by Iran, which would use an attack on Assad to attack Israel.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Captain Hate,

I think your "gossip" component of history is why I am more interested in English history than American history.

Until writers like David McCullough (which I only discovered in adulthood) most histories of America are written more as studies in movements or events (at least in high school) and the knowledge of character interaction is left out.

English history, until at least WWII, is more like a giant soap opera especially when the monarchy had more power.

Very good point, Janet. We've seen how our comparatively hasty and ill conceived departure from Iraq left a vacuum that was filled by ISIS. Syria must be handled delicately and in conjunction with our allies in the region. This is the approach that President Trump is using, and I believe it will be most effective in the long run. There are no 'quick and dirty' solutions.

Iran will also get the Trump treatment.

While I reject every tenet of the Muslim faith, if you wall them up, they will never be converted.

Have you ever heard a president say he was praying for the souls of the dead, who happened to be Muslims.

President Trump did. Sisi has talked about the faith reforming at a speech at their big Imam-training university. That was a brave thing to do, along with him visiting the Coptic churches a year or so ago.

All life is precious and we should be praying for conversion, in my opinion.

Janet 🚬

Praying for the souls of the dead is a waste of time. They are dead. They had to make their choice while living.

Islam is the problem. Shia, Sunni, ISIS, & all the rest....Islam is the problem.

It is about time some of the Islamic leaders explain which parts of the Q'u''ra'n are true & which are not. Which parts are not to be obeyed anymore?
Let's hear the King of Saudi Arabia renounce the violent teachings in the Q'u''ra'n.

Some years ago I told a story about the posse that we could expect to follow the pimps around in Dayton (where I spent my "formative" years:)).

They were front men who worked to "drum up" business. I referred to them as Jive Ass Mofos, and commented that Obama was exactly like them.

Not claiming that it only came from me, but I remember sharing that story.

We made our forays into some rough neighborhoods because the liquor stores didn't care if you were not of age:)

The second book of Maccabees records:

12:39 On the next day, as by that time it had become necessary, Judas and his men went to take up the bodies of the fallen and to bring them back to lie with their kinsmen in the sepulchres of their fathers. 12:40 Then under the tunic of every one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was why these men had fallen. 12:41 So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous Judge, who reveals the things that are hidden; 12:42 and they turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out. And the noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen. 12:43 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the resurrection. 12:44 For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead. 12:45 But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.

Frau Reistafel

Pres. Jive Ass has many fathers!

When I started being a Spanish teacher in the Public school system cooperative learning was gaining steam.
The French teacher had all of her classes in that mode and tried to convert me.
I combined traditional teaching with some group work.
In one class which had freshman and seniors with some who had failed the class before I divided the class into two groups and passed those with a more limited curriculum and advanced those learning at a faster speed.
I only failed one student for absence and my 19 year old basketball player
did manage to master the basics.I never fully embraced cooperative learning because everyone learns a language in their own way.
Some of the smartest students had trouble with pronunciation and accent while others could roll their R's beautifully.

The Sunday shows are basically just propaganda and spin for both sides. Senators pontificate and talk through their hats; admin officials such as Susan Rice blow smoke up our kiesters.

The only real value is to see what flavor of BS is being sold today.

Rice propagated the Benghazi lie; the Clintonistas propagated their own brand of BS; and Trump for the most part was not invited and simply mocked. Oh well, tough on the networks now.

Now that we have Rice by the throat it is time to squeeze. Who directed her? Who else at the top was involved? ValJar has been very good at puppetry but it is time to nail her ass to the floor. Same with her boss.

The Obama administration was a criminal conspiracy and Rice is a tremendous example of their egregious use of the state for political ends.

Instead of hiding in their districts, I would hoe Gowdy et al would be combing records, correlating dates, reviewing the phone logs and connecting dots for the next month in order to put on a Grade A Number One hanging in May.

Summon Barry Choomer back from Tahiti and put him in the hot seat. What did he know and when did he know it. Compel Koskinen to testify. Compel Kerry to testify on WMD's and the Syrian nerve gas inventory.

They need to be publicly named and shamed. The Left has been doing this for the most trivial of reasons at our universities. Let them see how the wheels of justice actually turn. This is what treason, conspiracy, and graft really look like. Wanna protest that, snowflake?

I often wonder if there is some sort of language skill gene.

During WWII, my dad won a Bronze Star for organizing the street people of Naples (petty thieves, some women of less than sterling reputation, beggars, etc.) into a repair shop for the Army. He was able to do it because he taught himself Italian. In fact, when he had a stroke, his first language came back as Italian. My youngest sister was the only one who could talk to him because she had lived in Italy for a year. (He eventually got all of his English back.)

Anyway, I am good at SOUNDING like I know a language. My German pronunciation is pretty good. I, however, have a terrible time with vocabulary. In other words, I can read off a page and sound like I speak the language. I just have no idea what I am pronouncing. LOL!

Amyway, that's my language skill. I have one sister who is a complete zero on foreign languages and even has trouble dealing with British accents.

My son, however, is self-taught in Spanish which makes him a premium hire in the landscaping business. I am constantly amazed hearing him talk - jokes with the guys and everything. Very fluent and never had a class in it.

I often wonder if there is some sort of language skill gene.

I've read that skill at language, music and math are related and if you're good at one you're likely good at all.

Personal experience doesn't fit with that theory, though. My wife is a whiz with language and is very talented musically, but she's terrible with math; I am great wit math, but dreadful at languages and to say I have no musical talent would be crediting me unfairly.

"Abu Ivanka!" Gotta love it, even though I admit to real ambivalence about seeing her being given a seat at the table as though she were a principle official. Part of it may be that its been so long since since we had a president with adult children in the White House, it takes some getting used to. The Trumps have always been a family operation, which may be a big piece of the president's strength.

Also on the plus side, the familial presence at Mar-a-Lago, with daughter Arabella reciting chinese poetry and lessons from the Confucian primer for Xi Jingping & Peng Liyuan, may well have been of incalculable diplomatic value. It's my impression that the whole visit is getting high marks in China, if the Hong Kong papers are anything to go by. They were apparently a little nervous before the fact, but pleased that the niceties were observed.

It's fascinating that it was the Chinese who opted for Mar-a-Lago rather than the White House, presumably to maximize their face saving option should any improprieties occur. Xi has got to be pleased that Trump also paid him the respect of making his own Secretaries of State, Treasury, and Commerce available to work with the senior officials in the Chinese delegation. What a difference an election makes, indeed! For the first time in a very long while, the Chinese did not attempt to formulate an embarrassment of some sort for the U.S. President in the run-up to their scheduled talks, which is one of their favorite tactics for setting the other side off balance at the outset of negotiations. They even laid such traps for GWB, so this is almost a first. I believe The U.S. comments on China & North Korea seemed pitch perfect to me too.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

James D.,

Granddaughter is good at math, music and French.

So of course she wants a poli sci major and law school.

She is able to function as a translator for African immigrants. She plays 5 instruments. She is now acing statistics.

I am hopeful someone at college will lure her away from political science, which I think is a dead-end major exceot if you are going to law school. And the market for liberal lawyers is rapidly shrinking.

Agree with JMH, IRT to Ivanka and even Jared being counsel, in light of their lack of apparent expertise, but I would not be the least bit surprised to learn that Trump is severely dyslexic, and they well may essential to his functioning if that is the case. Many dyslexics are extremely successful in business, because they develop all kinds of skills to compensate for their inability to read quickly.

We lived through eight years of Val Jar leading JEF around by the hand. I can learn to live with Trump's adult child and spouse helping him keep this all under control. I have the feeling they advise, not command.

He seems to do ok reading from teleprompters and written pages at meetings. I have seen this watching multiple videos.

What I think more likely is that they are "watchers" who pay attention to body language. I have often noted that they are looking at other people in the room rather than their dad when they are in meetings.

I also think Jared is a courier. Trump doesn't trust email, cables, or phone calls on super-secret stuff, and rightly so given what we have seen.

I am also glad they met the Chinese at Mar-a-Lago. The Chinese may have also taken the hint that conversations might be more secure there. HA!

I am terrible at math but have sang in choirs and took Latin ,French and Spanish and did very well. I minored in History and loved British and American Literature.
The sciences were my downfall which is why I am in awe of DrJ and JIB for their abilities in those areas.

Thought my previous post was getting a little long, so on a separate note:

WRT to the Russia/Syria front, via one of your links, I ended up noticing this article at Al Masdar News, which I haven't seen covered elsewhere: Russia, Iran and Hezbollah military leaders release joint statement, threatens the U.S.. Among a whole number of interesting features (including their forthrightness about the joint "allied" operations, in which Hezbollah is accorded its own military leadership slot), this caught my attention:

The statement released in Arabic states that the allied operations room recognizes that the US is supporting the separation of northern Syria and Iraq from their respective states.
This seems like an unmistakable reference to the Kurds. I'll have to do a bit more digging, but I'd be interested in what folks make of this, and of the fact that the document was disseminated in Arabic. Perhaps Erdogan was too busy denouncing European "oppression, violence and Nazism," to join in the condemnation.
