Chinese leaders undoubtedly have a strategy with respect to North Korea and the West, although it is also likely they have hard-liners and moderates creating dynamic tension.
This piece describes the North Korean strategy, with the familiar point that the North Koreans have an ongoing crisis of legitimacy and believe they need their nukes to stave off a US overthrow (Libya and Qadaffi are mentioned here, although She Who Must Not Be Named is omitted as the architect of that venture.)
But a key point is made in the discussion of what it might take to soothe the fears of the North Korean rulers:
The High Costs of a Deal
Any agreement that North Korea would be likely to consider minimally acceptable would come at huge cost to the United States and its allies. North Korea would be likely to require:
■ A tacit acknowledgment of the country’s right to retain its existing programs.
■ A declaration that the United States considered the North Korean government legitimate and would not seek to topple it.
■ The lifting of sanctions.
■ The withdrawal or reduction of the American military commitment to South Korea.
“They want to see the end of that alliance,” said Joshua H. Pollack, the editor of the Nonproliferation Review, suggesting that North Korea has drawn inspiration from the way that the United States broke with Taiwan in order to normalize relations with China in the 1970s.
Mr. Pollack emphasized that North Korea probably saw this as a long-term goal to be accomplished over many years, rather than something to demand up front and all at once.
Still, he said, North Korea may see this as the only way to reduce the existential threat that its weapons program is meant to curb.
Any partial or full American withdrawal would risk sending the American relationship with South Korea and Japan into crisis, empowering North Korea and weakening American influence in Asia.
Hmm, breaking the South Korea/Japan/USA alliance and booting the US out of that part of the world... who else might benefit from that? China, maybe a bit?
Which suggests that as much as we exhort China to bring Kim Jong Un to heel, there are surely Chinese hard-liners arguing that in the longer run, North Korean and China have a broad overlap of interests. Troubling!
But then again, in what is presumably a signal to those North Koreans, the Chinese leadership has allowed some moderate dissent:
Criticism of Beijing’s North Korea Policy Comes From Unlikely Place: China
By Chris Buckley
BEIJING — When China’s best-known historian of the Korean War, Shen Zhihua, recently laid out his views on North Korea, astonishment rippled through the audience. China, he said with a bluntness that is rare here, had fundamentally botched its policy on the divided Korean Peninsula.
China’s bond with North Korea’s Communist leaders formed even before Mao Zedong’s decision in 1950 to send People’s Liberation Army soldiers to fight alongside them in the Korean War. Mao famously said the two sides were “as close as lips and teeth.”
But China should abandon the stale myths of fraternity that have propped up its support for North Korea and turn to South Korea, Mr. Shen said at a university lecture last month in Dalian, a northeastern Chinese port city.
“Judging by the current situation, North Korea is China’s latent enemy and South Korea could be China’s friend,” Mr. Shen said, according to a transcript he published online. “We must see clearly that China and North Korea are no longer brothers in arms, and in the short term there’s no possibility of an improvement in Chinese-North Korean relations.”
Whoa! It's hard to imagine that China would be willing to accept a re-unified Korea under South Korean leadership as part of a Western alliance. On the other hand...
China’s “traditionalist view that views the U.S. as a much greater threat than North Korea is deeply entrenched,” Bonnie S. Glaser, an expert on Chinese foreign policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said in an email. “But the proponents of change are vocal, too. They argue that North Korea is a growing liability.”
What China really wants is stability and calm:
Mr. Shen has gone much further than other scholars in calling for a reset.
“The fundamental interests of China and North Korea are at odds,” he said in his lecture. “China’s fundamental interest lies in achieving a stability on its borders and developing outward. But since North Korea acquired nuclear weapons, that periphery has never been stable, so inevitably Chinese and North Korean interests are at odds.”
With Obama in office the Chinese were never really worried that the US would do something daft, so placating North Korea and annoying the US was the lower-risk path. George Bush, of course, was mired in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bill Clinton had his own distractions, some in Iraq and some closer to the Oval Office.
But Trump? There is a guy who can play the 'crazy' card with as much gusto as Kim Jong Un (I always thought that was a modest talking point in favor of the McCain Presidency, for what that was worth).
If - yuge IF - forced to acknowledge that their current path leads to a potentially disastrous confrontation China might yet try to walk a different road. My ongoing hope is that they try to preserve North Korea as an independent buffer on their border under sane new puppet leadership provided by the son of the recently-poisoned legitimate heir. Such a great deal can be worked out!

Science Guy Bill Nye says "there's a movement to replace science."
And there's a March for Science this weekend in DC. To be followed by yet another useless protest next week on whatevs.
So, let me get this straight, Bill--- the climate change obsession, is that the movement to replace science or is there a cabal of snake handlers in lower Mississippi who are going to start getting DOEnergy grants to study the Divine healing power of serpents?

Trump has proven a fairly stout fellow on his campaign promises. However, regardless of whether there is a backstage feud, his promotion of Ivanka and Kushner is troubling.
If they are successful in getting him to back off important promises like backing out of the idiotic climate accords he will have a serious problem. If he remains his own man and ignores them on important issues so much the better but it is pretty worrying. Nobody fires their kid and that's a bad thing in any employee.

Caps v. Leafs, game 5 tonight. Must win. They really have to get over playing down to inferior teams. Pens have 2-3 nights off since they are done 4-1 against a very competitive teak who I thought would give them more trouble than they did.
Getting past Leafs is least of their worries, then they get a super rested Pens team who give them nothing but fits every year in the playoffs.
I am not going with choke this year but then I really don't what kind of leader Ovenchin is and how he can charge them up. Hoping he has fire.

Jenner is a sad case, and will become more pathetic as he does more and more to get attention. If he were my father, I would get a court order for commitment.
Miss Marple, can you envision that scene?
"Mr Mason, I see that you're representing the children of Mr Jenner in the hopes of having him committed. Will you please identify the family members you're representing who have filed the petition with this Court?

"I can, your Honor. Here are my clients:

"Mz Kim Kardashian,"
"Mz Khloe Kardashian,"

"Mz Kendel Jenner,"
and Mz Kylie Jenner."
"And what exactly are the reasons the errr, Jenner daughters are recommending for the incarceration of their father, Mister Mason?"
"Moral turpitude, your Honor."
MORAL TERPITUDE?
"Moral Turpitude, Mr Mason?"
"Perry's really stepped in it now, Della!"
"Yes, Your Honor, Moral Turpitude. His children believe he is not fit enough morally to be either their father or their mother."
"I object, Your Honor. Mr Mason is making a mockery of this Court, and of the Law.
"Objection sustained Mister Berger, and I have to say I agree. Case dismissed."
OMG!, OMG!, OMG!!!

A philosophical question -- one I will never see the answer to, I expect, but it interests me. If there were a pill that made one happy to be one's own sex -- as opposed to pretending one were the other sex -- could our society deal with that? This is a very identity politics world we live in now, and transexuality is becoming yet another identity that must be *PROCLAIMED* or *CONDEMNED*.

Rod Serling's Twilight Zone did a great examination of pretty much that exact question in Number 12 Looks Just Like You

In a future society, all young adults go through a process known as "The Transformation," in which each person's body and face are changed to mimic a physically attractive design chosen from a small selection of numbered models. The process gives everyone a beautiful appearance, slows deterioration due to age and extends a person's lifespan, and makes the recipient immune to any kind of disease.
The motive of the Transformation is social harmony. According to Professor Sig (aka Sigmund Friend), a psychologist with the Transformation service, "Years before, wiser men than I ... saw that physical unattractiveness was one of the factors that made men hate, so they charged the finest scientific minds with the task of eliminating ugliness in mankind."...
An excellent episode.

Just got back from Kroger. Daughter went with me because she needed to get stuff for lunch and weird stuff for breakfast, like carrot juice and organic apple juice which she mixes half and half.
What luck! Since this is "Earth Week" all of the organic and natural stuff was on sale, so she got a bunch of that. Even after coupons the bill was still $160. Organic stuff isn't cheap.
One of these days we are going to find out that most of it is exactly the same as non-organic only in different packaging. However, it's a small price to pay to keep the peace.
I did get a 1pind package of Russell Stover chocolates for 70% off because it had an Easter over-wrap. So there's that.

From the deep state:
The CIA had an opening for an assassin. After all the background
checks, interviews and testing were done, there were three finalists:
two men and a woman.
For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large
metal door and handed him a gun.
"We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what
the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in
a chair. Kill her."
The man said "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife."
The agent said, "Then you are not the right man for this job. Take
your wife and go home."
The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and
went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. The man
came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife."
The agent said, "You don't have what it takes, so take your wife and go home."
Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions
to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots
were heard one after another. Then they heard screaming, crashing,
and banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The
door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping sweat from her
brow.
"The gun was loaded with blanks," she said. "I had to kill him with the chair."

When news of the Aurora shooting first broke, ABC made a judgment call that has since become arguably the low point of journalism pertaining to the shooting – namely, ABC correspondent Brian Ross concluded that, based solely on the shooter’s (fairly common name), he might have had connections to the Tea Party.

A bunch of head shrinkers diagnose Trump as paranoid delusional.
Most acknowledge they violated their conventional professional ethics to do so, but I'm sure most support the March On Science, er sorry, March For Science also.
Hey what good are professional ethics if you can't violate them for your politics?

March For Science
I've thought about attending. What do you all think? I'm in the area after a grueling week at NSF and NCI.

So NYC will be the staging area for a war game about a nuclear detonation, are they nutz

Among many reasons that I don't trust reporters like Brian Williams, Chuck Todd, and Jake Tapper, is because they refuse to acknowledge that what goes thru the heads of people as stories are developing is in itself a legitimate part of the story. They act as if only after they have had their opportunity to massage the story to their journalistic satisfaction that it becomes a story that people can be allowed to have opinions about.
For instance, when the gunmen in Fresno last week was reported as shooting random victims I thought immediately it was an Islamic Terror attack. That is a legitimate part of the story, because in this day and age observant people with brains have to suspect that.
When I the heard he was shouting "Alahu Akbar " I knew it was an Islamic Terror Attack. That's part of the story.
When I saw that the Media then censored out reports of him shouting "Alahu Akbar" I knew that they knew that it was an Islamic Terror Attack, but that they don't want people to know that. That's part of the story.
And when I then read that the Police Chief said that the islamic Murderer's sole reason for murdering was "Race," I not only knew the Police Chief was lying, but I am not surprised that he was lying, because like the Media he is interested in trying to keep the Public from having their correct perceptions and preconceptions of Islamic Terror confirmed. That's also part of the story.
Now if it had turned out it wasn't an Islamic Terrorist, just some aggrieved maniac with a suicide wish, I could have handled that too, and that would have been part of the story as well.
So when President Trump says about Paris, "It looks like a Terror Attack," he was correct, whether it turned out to be true or not, because it did look like a Terror Attack, regardless what Tapper, Williams, or Chuck Todd think.
And BTW that's different from Obama saying "I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly.
Obama was an idiot for saying that "the Cambridge police acted stupidly", but the fact that he had that preconceived notion in his head was also part of the story---in fact it was probably the biggest part of the story, because it revealed his latent racism.
To the dogs.

Dr J,
Go and ask random questions about science.
Examples:
Explain what a mole is.
What is the speed of light?
Do you understand the coefficient of friction?
What are the two different types of volcanoes?
Name 3 types of clouds.
Name the major parts of a cell.
Anyway, you get my drift. Maybe you could make up a pop quiz and ask them to fill it out.
I bet most of them couldn't answer more than one of the questions I listed.

MM
Your right, but anybody who was paying attention in science classes in middle school 40-50 years ago would get a passing grade on your quiz.
What does that tell us?

Buckeye,
What that tells us is that the schools are worthless, and that most of the people at that science march don't know anything about science.
It's actually pretty frightening. I learned about cloud types in the fifth grade.

How'd I do?
A sauce made with chocolate and chili peppers. Twice the speed of dark. It has something to do with why the rug ends up bunched up against the wall when the cats are running around after getting catnip. Normal and baking soda. Regular, thunder and fluffy. The door, the bunk and the toilet.Posted by: Dave (in MA) | April 21, 2017 at 11:22 PM

Just stopped at the Trail Paking Lot we walked yesterday and there were red traffic cones blocking the entry with a red Bear Warning sign reading "Friday 4/21 Brown Bear feeding on Moose Kill. Trail Closed Potter to McHugh."
Yikes! I guess they're awake.

Not any more. That was Obama's initial scam and the people who produced it have yet to be punished.

My complaint was about annoying ads with annoying people singing annoying jingles, but I'd go for that too.

daddy, your 10:51: "....For instance, when the gunmen in Fresno last week was reported as shooting random victims I thought immediately it was an Islamic Terror attack."
Yes, it's the way the media controls the news -- on another story last week, think in CA, but it was the shooting where the guy was named 'Mohammed Something', got so mad and almost posted this twice THE LOCAL CBS AFFILIATE NEWS PERSON SAID "THE GUNMAN SHOUTED GOD IS GREAT!"
The gunman shouted "Allah Akbar" or however you spell it. Now, if CBS wants to spare Muslim's feelings (they're real big about being inclusive and sparing hurt feelings of our Muslim citizens in Tulsa) by not using Allahu Akbar -- why don't they worry about Christians out in TVland when they twist the truth and tell the lie?!! I am still so aggravated about it that I am slightly incoherent trying to type it out. I have sputtered all week about the lying jackals of the media.
Posted by: joan | April 21, 2017 at 11:51 PM
:) Should have said "I got so mad" -- my post almost reads like the gunman got so mad.

If the cop was at bataclan he would know the horrors that happened there, he surely though they might have learned a lesson.
Posted by: narciso | April 22, 2017 at 12:02 AM
I'm still sputtering. The media can change Allahu Akbar to God is Great to spare Muslim feelings, but CBS doesn't worry about substituting our God because it doesn't matter to them how we'll feel about our God's name being besmirched.
