It has been clear for a year that looking for logic in TrumpWorld and feeling outraged by its absence is a game for fools. OK, and for those who have given up salt and feel a need to supplement their blood pressure.
Eric Boehm of Reason reprises some reactions from left and right. I especially love this from ardent and partisan lefty Josh Marshall:
Here's how Marshall puts it [link]: "There is only one reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the decision to fire Comey: that there is grave wrongdoing at the center of the Russia scandal and that it implicates the President. As I write this, I have a difficult time believing that last sentence myself. But sometimes you have to step back from your assumptions and simply look at what the available evidence is telling you. It's speaking clearly: the only reasonable explanation is that the President has something immense to hide and needs someone in charge of the FBI who he believes is loyal."
Or, "I can hardly believe I believe what I desperately want to believe." Really? Most people find that pretty easy. More difficult is conjuring explanations when you don't want there to be any.
Just for example - might Trump be firing Comey to maintain a cover-up? Absolutely. But isn't it possible that Trump is firing Comey because he has zero credibility on either the left or right at this point? An "exoneration" from Comey in the form of a no-action press conference clearing Trump and his associates from any Russian collusion will never silence or satisfy Trump's critics. That could be it! And just to give that notion a chance to breathe, might we want to wait and see who is tapped to replace Comey at the FBI?
Back to Boehm:
It will take days, perhaps weeks (perhaps longer) to understand all the ramifications of Tuesday's firing of Comey. Much will depend on who Trump appoints to lead the FBI and who, if anyone, he (or Congress) appoints to continue the investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.
In the short term, though, this looks very, very bad for Trump.
Yes it does, but just how bad really does depend on what happens next.

Ummm, I hate to disagree with our host, but I don't think it looks bad for Trump at all. You had the entire left side of the aisle howling for his blood right up until the time that he gave it to them, them all of a sudden, OMGWTFBBQ!! Trump is the worst president since that last very very very bad president! (Take your pick of George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, or Adolf Hitler, depending on your beliefs. Of course, maybe they are all the same person to you. Not that there is anything wrong with that.)
The reality is that EVERYTHING and NOTHING looks very very very bad for Trump. The media and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) have been beating this drum since the inauguration. Then they turned it up to 11. By now, it is around 16 and a half or something. How can anyone take a single thing they say seriously without falling over laughing? I would have hoped that our host wouldn't fall for the shell game that the Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) have set up, where there is a pea under every single shell, and they point and screech when they lift, "See! He is guilty! Impeach him!"
Yawn.

Wow, that was clear as mud. The second sentence, which read:
You had the entire left side of the aisle howling for his blood right up until the time that he gave it to them, them all of a sudden, OMGWTFBBQ!! Trump is the worst president since that last very very very bad president!
SHOULD have read:
You had the entire left side of the aisle howling for Comey's blood right up until the time that Trump gave it to them, them all of a sudden, OMGWTFBBQ!! Trump is the worst president since that last very very very bad president!
That's what happens when you write quickly.

Can you imagine the outcry from the Left and their media accomplices if President Trump had not fired Comey following: (1) his testimony last week and (2) receipt of the memo from assistant AG Rosenstein, a man of impeccable integrity who served in the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations? This episode provides yet another example of the hypocrisy of the Left and demonstrates they will oppose anything our President does.
Yes, ™--had he not fired him, the same people screaming "Russian collusion" would be saying he deliberately kept in place a man as head of the FBI already proven to have been compromised.

In the short term, though, this looks very, very bad for Trump.
It depends on the lens you're looking through. I see President Trump as an aggressive savvy businessman who is not afraid to say just what he thinks and who pursues a goal without any fear. He's not one to sit around strategizing like some recent leaders. He confronts a problem straight on as he did with former Director Comey.
I don't believe for one minute that he was concerned about the so called Russia investigation. Comey danced around that issue as a means to hold on to his job. After Comey's testimony this past week, I believe the President had enough. Comey wasn't pursuing an investigation into the surveillance scandal or the persistent leaks coming out of the White House. In fact, Comey refused to follow up on the President's concerns. That was reason enough to fire him. It was supplemented by the damning information forwarded by the Attorney General.
What this really comes down to is whether the President can withstand the inevitable firestorm by a media that has been chomping at the bit to bring down his presidency and a squishy GOPe that fears he will destroy their comfortable country club with all the perks at the taxpayers expense. Trump has survived other media attacks before and come back stronger. I don't expect anything different with this issue especially after McCabe's testimony today.

The Dem-Media machine HAVE to come up with some "show". This is the 'Russia Show'.
It is Democrat 'bird-dogging' except on a bigger scale.
It's all planned, produced, & executed with giant headlines & screaming TV talking heads.
There are thousands of other issues that are important to Americans but the lousy MFM go on & on & on & on about Russia. Russia? Really? It doesn't even make sense.
It is like Bush's 'Plame Show' except on an even bigger scale. What non-news junkie American cared about Plame's name being in a paper? It just gave the MFM a vehicle to endlessly bash the Bush Administration.
A relentless barrage of 'the Bush administration is corrupt' & 'everyone hates the Bush administration'.
I don't know how to end it except for Americans to abandon the old MFM in huge numbers. Turn them off.

He's cooked!
Our Congressional friends on the right, their legislative agenda stalled, simply "aren't there" yet. But they see the writing on the wall and they know what they have to do. When a horse is lame you have to do what you have to do. It's sad but that's life. Life is tough. They know that.
BTW, I asked my wife three times if she suspected me of fucking Brenda at work and three times she said she didn't. So, you know, that's good news for me. I mean if she for a second did suspect me of fucking Brenda that would be bad. I don't think that would be good. Thank God. I'm in the clear. Phew!!!!

The problem with the media attempts to create "drama" where there is none is that when President Trump screws up (eventually he will, as we all do), we will not hear about it in all the noise.
Granted the "drama" narrative fits the day time TV soap opera watching couch potato intelligence of current media stars. Further granted that understanding, let alone reporting, important policy disputes or events is beyond their mental capacity. The surprise is that the media owners (e.g. Disney execs, Bezos, etc) want this to be their face to the world. let me restate that... the surprise is that I expected different behavior from these corporate posers.

Speaking of dogs, I've run across a couple "designer mutts" in the last couple days that were really attractive dogs. One was a poodle/Bernese mountain mix that was all black and looked like a Newfoundland retriever with curly hair. The other was a Lab/St Bernard mix that looked like a black St Bernard complete with the obligatory string of drool; his name of Bear was very appropriate. They were both friendly and playful so it seems like both science projects were successful.

Not sure why the cone isn't working. If you can put a collar on him you should be able to do likewise with a cone. Yes, I know they'll try to scratch it off but the noggin is bigger than the neck.

Captain Hate,
For some reason your story reminded me of an incident that happened when I was about 5 years old.
If you walked behind two homes adjacent to my folks', you got to the back of an ice cream store. I was allowed to walk over there and get a cone when I had completed chores. (Yes, this was Indianapolis in the 1950's, where, when I was 10, I was allowed to take the bus downtown with my friends.)
Anyway, when I came home, I saw a BEAR! Scared the heck out of me, went screaming into the house to get my mom, asking her to make sure house was locked, etc.
Turned out it was a standard poodle who hadn't been groomed, so he had all of his curly coat.
The funny thing is, in my memory, I still see a bear. LOL!

narciso...you could also check Petco or Pet Smart for a soft collar. Our kennel owner recommends Bach Rescue Remedy. It is a natural, herbal sedative.
I don't remember using a cone for either of our cairns,so I'm thinking maybe a mild sedative was used. Good Luck!

Buckeye,
The press briefings are ridiculous. The only news out of them is whatever announcements Spicer or Sarah Sanders read at the beginning.
Then we get 1/2 hour of attack questions about Flynn/Russia/Comey garbage, with accusations of racism by April Ryan. Major Garrett has become a complete tool, and even John Roberts of Fox is participating in the feeding frenzy.
The only one who is polite and asks decent questions is the old guy who represents Newsmax.

Marlene,
That is a good question. I still say Susan Rice wouldn't have undertaken the unmasking at that depth without orders from Obama. The dissemination of the unmasked surveillance among all agencies was not only to make it harder to point fingers, but also to give allies in those agencies ideas on how to undermine Trump.
This goes right along with Obama's MO, because he has a history of using illegally leaked information in order to undermine opponents. An example would be the leak of the sealed divorce documents from his Illinois Senate opponent Ryan.

As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!....
===========================
This looks to be part 1 of a 2-part tweet.
I am dead certain this will cause another wave of media hysteria. It began at the press briefing yesterday, with all of the "But Sean said last week..." questions.

I still say Susan Rice wouldn't have undertaken the unmasking at that depth without orders from Obama
They would have been wink-and-a-nod orders, and, really, I doubt Obama would have had to do even that to get his underlings to do it. They were all on the same page as far as contempt for the law and willingness to abuse their power.

Interesting.

Aha! I was right!

...Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???

LMAO! Deny them their TV time! Hilarious!

Leaving for a while to help a friend take her dad's glassware to the auction house.

Not just "interesting"", MM, very disturbing.

After watching Jonathon Karl make a complete fool of himself yesterday, I'm all for cancelling briefings until they can act quasi-professionally. Helen Thomas used to be an outlier, an amusing old crank. Now they're all vying for most-obnoxious.

Never would Obama on his own make a decision to spy and unmask without a wink and nod from ValJar.

Barbara, I agree with you. I'm not the least bit worried about Trump and the Comey firing. Maybe that is my weakness. To me, trump keeps his eye on the prize and the press is just an attempt to divert him, which he uses as entertainment.
Maybe I'm nuts, but the way he is operating makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks all,

You are not nuts, Jane. This is exactly how he handled himself in his birther affairs.

I took Kevlar's link to be primarily a warning and because of Ivanka's and her husband's public statements and histories it seems like a pretty reasonable one.
Trump himself has a tendency to wonder all over the political map and he has been sending mixed signals on the Paris Accords so...
So far he has stayed the course but if "we won't be fooled again" doesn't remain our mantra it will almost certainly be our destiny.

Hey Dubllin Dave. Brenda just called. Said you were no good in the sack, and that it was just a charity hump on her part.

From Kev's link:
There is nothing reasonable about a backhanded statement like that. The author included this bullshit because she thinks Ivanka is a prissy dolt.
The rest of her advice is stained by that crap.
YMMV

henry, what a great idea from the chitown lurker!

-- The author included this bullshit because she thinks Ivanka is a prissy dolt.--
She thinks Ivanka, a lib fashion designer, shouldn't be advising her pop on things like chemical weapons usage and responses to it. Ivanka clearly did so since her brother Eric said she did.
If you are concerned about a lib daughter influencing her conservative father then a little snark served up along the fact that she apparently did influence Trump's decision is not so much a stain as a reasonable zinger.
Would you have been as sanguine if Ronald Reagan had given his idiot spawn Ron or Patti Davis an office in the WH and he began soliciting their advice?
If Trump isn't soliciting Ivanka's advice why is she there?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | May 12, 2017 at 10:11 AM
I am concerned with promoting a stupid article that then makes me defend whether or not Ivanka realizes that a bomb dropped in Syria could kill a baby.

First Children, our future!

Ah, memories of the Once and Future Omen sitting in on Palestinian peace talks when she was at Stanford. (That probably gave her a pass on writing a paper that semester.) I bet she took notes which have been saved like her earlier important contributions.

The Omen at five:
“Dear Mr. President, I have seen The Sound of Music. The Nazis don’t look like very nice people. Please don’t go to their cemetary [sic]. Sincerely, Chelsea Clinton.”
Why didn't Pres. Reagan listen to her?
