To borrow a favorite from Glenn Reynolds - why are America's liberal campuses such cesspools of anti-unionism?
Jennifer Klein, a Yale professor writing in the NY Times, lays out the 'unions for the but not for me' attitude at Yale, Harvard and more. In brief, they like the cheap and flexible labor, unlike greedy corporations who are simply exploiting workers shamelessly.
DO LET ME ADD: Early reports described this as a "symbolic" hunger strike - students can eat when hungry, prompting Twitter wags to announce proudly that they, too have been on hunger strikes for decades, for causes as yet undeclared.
However, per Prof. Klein this hunger strike is not all merriment and hot dogs:
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Two weeks ago, Yale graduate student teachers began a hunger strike to pressure the school to negotiate with their union. Eight committed to fasting, planning only to stop if a doctor says their health is at risk of permanent damage. If a student has to stop fasting, another union member takes his or her spot. Four of the students have had nothing but water for 14 days.
...
At Yale, graduate student teachers tried sending letters, gathering signatures for community petitions and holding rallies to bring the school to the bargaining table, without result. So, two weeks ago, union members erected a lofty shelter on Beinecke Plaza facing the offices of Yale’s president, Peter Salovey. They furnished the area with sofas, chairs, tables, lamps, a bookcase, turf and picnic tables. The graduate students who are fasting take posts there each day, wrapped in blankets. Some use wheelchairs as they have become too weak to walk. At night they sleep inside the First and Summerfield Church.
After deep reflection I will take the same view I took when professional athletes unionize and threaten to strike - I don't care how much Derek Jeter or Tom Brady makes, I would rather see the money go to them then the Steinbrenner family or Robert Kraft. Like Harvard and Yale can't afford to pay up? Especially since virtually every faculty member there would back any union against any company or municipal employer?

Tax every college/university endowment worth more than, say, $10 million, at 90%.
I don't even care what the money is used for. Convert it all to $100 bills and burn it all in the world's biggest bonfire, for all I care, just take it away from the progs who run the universities and make them bleed.

Very true TM. This while they churn out more PhDs than the market can possibly bear and operate a placement cartel on the select few to be hired (diverse applicants only since circa 1990).

Momma mentioned yesterday that Caltech in April 2016 launched a Campaign to pull in $2 Billion and as of yesterday they had hit $1.39 Billion.
Posted by: daddy | May 09, 2017 at 05:30 PM
I'm sure Yale and Harvard can afford to pay up but most smaller universities can't.
Graduate student employment is, when done right, win-win. You get experience in the field and a stipend, the university gets your labor (in exchange for letting you in their program, which often is tuition-free for you). You also get a first-hand look at how the sausage is made, and therefore are better able to make good decisions about how you would like to proceed (or not) in your academic career.
If the grad students don't like it, they can quit the program. There are plenty of others who are every bit as qualified who would be happy to take their spots.
Posted by: Porchlight | May 09, 2017 at 05:32 PM
And by the way I hold no brief for American higher education. But these graduate students competed for these spots, which are near impossible to get at the Ivies If they didn't know exactly what they were getting into, I have zero sympathy. Starve away.
Posted by: Porchlight | May 09, 2017 at 05:34 PM
Sorry for my lack of punctuation.
Last comment: I supervise and work with a number of graduate students who are excellent workers and have made substantial contributions to our organization. We depend on their labor. Their take-home salary is not much, but they do get health benefits and in-state tuition, and they are given high-level tasks which they can then include on their CV. Most have gone on to professional positions with relative ease. Again, win-win.

It's amazing to read MSM Headlines blaring that "Yates was Worried Flynn might be subject to Blackmail," yet the story Rich linked about the IT Awan Brothers gets almost zero coverage at all, except from "The Daily Caller:"
Wasserman Schultz IT Guy Threatened Kidnappings For Cash, Court Docs Say
A former congressional information technology (IT) aide allegedly threatened to have his stepmother’s Pakistani relatives kidnapped if she talked to U.S. law enforcement authorities, according to court documents obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation’s (TheDCNF) Investigative Group.
“Imran Awan threatened that he is very powerful and if I ever call the police again, [he] will … kidnap my family members back in Pakistan,” Awan’s stepmother, Samina Gilani, claimed in the documents filed April 14 in Fairfax County, Va.
If you scroll to the bottom you see a list of the Dems these weasels worked for, many apparently who have not yet fired them:
Congressmen have been loathe to address the Awan situation. Meeks, who employed Hina Alvi, Imran Awan’s wife, claimed the family would not do anything wrong and blamed Islamophobia for the police investigation.
Spokesmen for Democratic Reps. Diana Degette of Colorado; Frederica Wilson of Florida; and Karen Bass, Jackie Speier, Julia Brownley, Pete Aguilar and Ted Lieu of California all refused or ignored requests about what they have done to look for data breaches and whether they have fired the brothers
Yet Flynn's who we're supposed to be worried about.

Posted by: henry | May 09, 2017 at 05:55 PM
Smart move firing Comey. If your top cop is getting closer to definitive proof that you colluded with America's enemies then simply remove your top cop.
I wouldn't be surprised if this order came down from Putin himself who apparently despises Comey on a personal level..
It's smart. I almost can't fault it. Put a puppet in place to stymie the investigation and eventually kill it. One thing you have to admire about Putin is his ability to move chess pieces around to ensure his own survival.

CBS is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE !!! Major Garrett and Scott Pelley just hashed over President Trump's letter a few minutes ago, and Garrett reversed the order and read the second paragraph AS THE FIRST LINES of the president's letter dismissing Comey. In Clarice's link to Trump's letter, I read the proper sequence -- and the tone is wonderful compared to the way Garrett/Pelley tried to portray it.
I keep thinking the media and the left can't surprise me, but they keep revealing their utter base and evil natures.

Iggy,
I find this both amusing and profound. This is why the media is focusing entirely on Trump (AFP link at Drudge even drops in a Nixon reference) and not championing Comey (wrongfully fired or what not). They need to see who he's going to hit hardest in the aftermath - they don't want to elevate somebody that's going to hit the Ds.
