A comical blend of common sense and BS from yesterday's failing NY Times. The author's gist - don't get shot, and especially, don't get shot by an assault bullet. (That's a bullet fired from an assault rifle, don'cha know?):
What Bullets Do to Bodies
By LEANA WEN JUNE 15, 2017
...
Early in my medical training, I learned that it is not the bullet that kills you, but the path the bullet takes. A non-expanding (or full-metal-jacket) bullet often enters the body in a straight line. Like a knife, it damages the organs and tissues directly in its path, and then it either exits the body or, if it is traveling at a slower velocity, is stopped by bone, tissue or skin.
This is in contrast to expanding bullets, especially if shot from an assault rifle, which can discharge bullets much faster than a handgun. Once they enter the body, they fragment and explode, pulverizing bones, tearing blood vessels and liquefying organs.
...
On Wednesday, four people were shot in Northern Virginia, including Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who remains in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the hip. A bullet to the hip is less likely to be deadly than a shot to the head. Unfortunately, the shooter in Virginia reportedly used a semiautomatic assault rifle. I once treated a patient shot in the pelvis with a similar weapon. The bullet shattered the hipbone into hundreds of pieces. It shredded the femoral artery, causing life-threatening bleeding and destroyed whole portions of the bowel and bladder.
This was the kind of damage inflicted upon victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando and other mass shootings including Newtown, San Bernardino and Aurora. Trauma doctors and nurses who treated patients in these tragedies, and medical examiners who investigated the aftermath, all commented on the unbelievable devastation resulting from the bullet wounds. Indeed, this is the intended consequence of assault rifles. When they discharge expanding bullets, the bullets don’t follow a straight line through the body; they fragment and explode, destroying as much living tissue as possible.
A certain "Why bother?" feeling settles over me when the Times runs howlers like this. Yes, rifles can deliver a higher speed, more powerful bullet and yes, deerhunters and the like will be encouraged to use fragmenting bullets to have a better chance of a quick kill. In fact, the Hague Declaration of 1899 bans the use of easily fragmenting bullets. From a military perspective this is not absurd since a wounded enemy consumes more opposition resources than a corpse. In any case, one might conclude it is better to be shot by a soldier than a hunter.
But as to whether the rifle is a semi-automatic or bolt-operated? Please.
So just what does this passage mean?
Indeed, this is the intended consequence of assault rifles. When they discharge expanding bullets, the bullets don’t follow a straight line through the body; they fragment and explode, destroying as much living tissue as possible.
First, "assault rifles" used in actual war ought not to be using banned fragmenting bullets on human targets. Secondly, what, one wonders, is the intended consequence of hunting rifles?
Key takeaway - don't get shot.
1099 is both a post number and IRS form.

My father couldn't stand the retro PT Cruiser
I kind of liked them because they reminded me of the late 40s Ford Anglias that used to run at the dragstrips in the late 60s.

I end up driving my wife's handed down old cars, and before the '04 Volvo I'm driving now I was driving an '02 PT Cruiser. I liked being able to remove the rear seats and get a small panel truck to run to Home Depot with.

The takeaway from him should be don't go to a hell hole like North Korea
I simply cannot understand it.
People can make dumb, dangerous choices - teens and clllege students especially. But you have to go through so many steps to travel to NK. Sign up with the tour company, get your passport, get a visa, get a plane ticket, and a dozen more things. And at each step there are massive flashing neon warning signs and deafening alarm bells.
You can back out at any of these steps, and it's impossible for me to see how anyone with even the tiniest shred of self-preservation and sanity can ignore all the warnings and actually get on the plane,

James D.,
I cannot even figure out why one would want to go to North Korea. What landmarks are there? What natural wonders? Cuisine? Art?
To me it is just a big gray prison camp. Not interested, even if it was an all-expenses paid thing.

His last two series, the by order of the president and the top secret series are a little more farcical, they read like mash in the early days of what would become the CIA in Berlin, officially it was the cig since they are set in 1946.

I don't think that is how Prime works. You pay for Prime and you get expedited shipping. The books won't be free. I pay $99 a year for Prime but I use it for more than books.

Clarice, exactly ....and if any member of Congress ---starting tomorrow, that have a desire to remain in office--need to subpoena every single Obama administration employee, w authority to " unmask".
Call every single one to stand before the American people, hold their right hand up, and SWEAR to tell the Truth, nothing but the Truth. Have the record show every bead of sweat, shift of their eyes, etc , while claiming the 5th amendment--or "Presidential privilege ".
It will destroy all credibility to the"but...but...it's allowed" for me, but not for thee Trump witch hunt. Must-See TV for Soros sheep

Posted by: pagar, a bacon, ham and sausage supporter | June 19, 2017 at 08:51 PM
Go and take a look, Pagar--the books are in several formats. You don't have to be a prime member to buy them--just to avoid shipping fees. If they are in kindle versions and you have a kindle there's no delivery fee for anyone I think.
Posted by: Clarice Feldman | June 19, 2017 at 08:55 PM
Pagar,
To get access to the free books, you have to sign up for Kindle Unlimited. That costs about $10.00 per month.
If they have the titles you might be interested in, it would be worth it. I like it because I'm able to find new authors as well as new books.

Yes, jimmyk, I remember that.
Speaking of Amazon Prime, has anybody watched Red Oaks? JPod, despite, or maybe because of, being an unlikeable prick is a very good film reviewer (or maybe his tastes dovetail with mine) recommended the series highly. So I'm looking for more opinions.
I watched part of the DVD of the Wrecking Crew last night. First of all I had no idea there were so many of them. Didn't know Leon Russell was one of em and sure didn't recognize him (plus he didn't look in particularly good shape when it was filmed explaining his subsequent demise). Also didn't know they backed up lots of non rock acts.
Posted by: Captain Hate | June 19, 2017 at 08:58 PM
Also, you are limited to 10 books at a time. You can turn in or return a book at any time and replace it with a new one.
The Prime feature works a little differently. I've used it, but am not as familiar with just how it works. Your access to free books is more limited.

I have two Regalo baby gates slated for delivery tomorrow. :)
I have one, and I love it, so I am replacing another old style and adding one to the bottom of the stairs. The Regalos have a door in them so you don't end up climbing over it every time you go from one room to another. The one for the bottom of the stairs actually attaches to the Newel post and the wall. Only gate I know of that does that.
Right now the pups can get through the gates even when closed, but the bigger dogs can't. In another week they will all be too big to get through the slats in the gates as well.
I order my dog food on the subscription plan plus shampoo and laundry detergent and stuff that you buy regularly. Each gets an extra 5% discount and every 4 gets you another IIRC 15% savings.
Another money savings tip:
If you shop Kroger and you eat out fairly regularly, buy the gift cards for restaurants and use them when you go out to dinner. Anything from McDs to Flemings Dunkin Donuts to Bonefish Grill... if you are going out anyways take advantage and get the gift cards. It's 2x fuel points and sometimes 4x fuel points for the gift card purchases. I filled up the Escape for $1.05 a gallon today after getting a buck off for the fuel points. I carry about 6-8 cards in my wallet and can go to McDs, Burger King, Chick fil A, Chilis, Bonefish, Longhorn, Bonefish, Flemings, or Olive Garden and the meal is already paid for. Also, if you get the gift cards with multiple restaurants on them Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Bahama Breeze and few others on the same gift card owned by that parent company (Darden??) , you aren't limited with your choice of where to eat.
PSA for the day...

Today was my 58th -- and what a weird, weird day it was here at JOM. Kev signs out, national records shifted to the Obama Library, who knows what next.

Happy Nirthday, and many, many more. The library thing is really the shizzle--what are the odds that that took place right after comey was fired and no longer there to block access to them?

I do hope you had a wonderful day, RG. You young 'un!

Its hard to find a greater hive of scum and villainy
That was difficult to read. No wonder so many dipshit comedians kill themselves; because they can't figure out how to laugh at what they see in the mirror. Fuck the lot of 'em.
The documentary of The Wrecking Crew was really really good. I just didn't realize that the bunch of them eventually ran out of work starting with the singer/songwriter things of bringing a fully arranged working group in the studios in the 70s. I remember the first time I heard the phrase, around when Carole King started making her own records, and thought "WTF does that phrase mean; do they think traveling troubadour sounds too baroque?" Now many years later I get it.

I had no idea RG was such a young sprout.

Ha! Old enough, CH, definitely old enough. Thanks Clarice / narciso / DrJ.
Now, in honor of Kevlar Kid, I think I shall drink a glass of water with a splash of magnesium and retire for the evening.
Later, Gators.

Bill Dana wasn't a dipshit comedian but I had no idea he was still alive. He was definitely old school comedy like Red Skeleton and Jonathan Winters appearing on shows like Ed Sullivan or Martha Raye.
RIP of course.

Why did judicial watch wait until June 19 to release the letter dated May 23. Everyone is playing to their narrative and I still think Trump holds most of the cards in any upcoming plots.

I hope all is well with KK because I'd like to meet up with him next time I'm in Santa Cruz, whenever that is, and walking through Berkeley shouting his name probably wouldn't have a good success rate.

Pagar,
I am a very infrequent poster (but a long-time lurker) and I wanted to respond to your book question.
If you have a library card check out whether it allows you access to the Digital Downloads Collaboration. You sign in with your library card (number and password) and can sign out Kindle Books, Overdrive Books and audio books for up to three weeks. I only use it for Kindle books - once you check out the book you download it from the Amazon site. The book automatically is returned at the end of the sign out period. No late fees!
I can only see libraries that participate in my area - the website must use the IP address to figure out which libraries you can access in your locality. Both of the Griffin books are included in the collection.
The web address is digitalbooks.moldi.org or clc.overdrive.com
Hope this works for you!

>>>A 22-year-old man accused of killing a 17-year-old Muslim girl in Virginia on Sunday morning is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tells The Daily Caller.
The suspect, Darwin A. Martinez Torres, was arrested on Sunday in the death of Nabra Hassanen, a high school student from Reston, Va. Police say he beat Hassanen with a metal baseball bat in what is being described as a road rage incident.<<<
