History won't be kind to Obama, or any other recent US Presidents, if this NY Times evaluation of the Iranian takeover of Iraq is any guide. No President (or anyone else) is named and associated with any decision.
Iran Dominates in Iraq After U.S. ‘Handed the Country Over’
By Tim Arango July 15, 2017
...
When the United States invaded Iraq 14 years ago to topple Saddam Hussein, it saw Iraq as a potential cornerstone of a democratic and Western-facing Middle East, and vast amounts of blood and treasure — about 4,500 American lives lost, more than $1 trillion spent — were poured into the cause.
From Day 1, Iran saw something else: a chance to make a client state of Iraq, a former enemy against which it fought a war in the 1980s so brutal, with chemical weapons and trench warfare, that historians look to World War I for analogies. If it succeeded, Iraq would never again pose a threat, and it could serve as a jumping-off point to spread Iranian influence around the region.
In that contest, Iran won, and the United States lost.
That's bad but is anybody to blame? Not really - instead we get weird passages like this:
Some are seeing an American troop commitment as a chance to revisit the 2011 withdrawal of United States forces that seemingly opened a door for Iran.
When American officials in Iraq began the slow wind-down of the military mission there, in 2009, some diplomats in Baghdad were cautiously celebrating one achievement: Iran seemed to be on its heels, its influence in the country waning.
“Over the last year, Iran has lost the strategic initiative in Iraq,” one diplomat wrote in a cable, later released by WikiLeaks.
But other cables sent warnings back to Washington that were frequently voiced by Iraqi officials they spoke to: that if the Americans left, then Iran would fill the vacuum.
Ryan C. Crocker, the American ambassador in Iraq from 2007 to 2009, said that if the United States left again after the Islamic State was defeated, “it would be effectively just giving the Iranians a free rein.”
But many Iraqis say the Iranians already have free rein. And while the Trump administration has indicated that it will pay closer attention to Iraq as a means to counter Iran, the question is whether it is too late.
“Iran is not going to sit silent and do nothing,” said Sami al-Askari, a senior Shiite politician who has good relationships with both the Iranians and Americans. “They have many means. Frankly, the Americans can’t do anything.”
One might have mentioned the prioritization of Obama 2012 and noted that the most qualified Presidential candidate in the history of forever was then Secretary of State, but why annoy the readership?
However, the most mysterious passage is this:
But after the United States’ abrupt withdrawal of troops in 2011, American constancy is still in question here — a broad failure of American foreign policy, with responsibility shared across three administrations.
But which three administrations? Bush 41 exhorted the Shiites to rise up against Saddam and then abandoned the southern Iraqis; he did establish the no-fly zone over the Kurds that led to the de facto Kurdish state we see today.
Clinton is probably the guy getting the pass here, although his approach to Saddam was certainly criticized from the right as weak,
Bush 43 invaded Iraq with no clear plan for managing the post-liberation occupation. On the other had, he Persevered and handed off to Obama a winnable (or at least, non-lost) war, or so said Obama and Biden as they pulled the plug prematurely in 2011.
Well. There is plenty of blame to go around but the Times doesn't serve up any at all. Weird.
Nor do they blame Trump. Double weird.

Pretty much EXACTLY what CTH says. Never in all my born days spent in an OR--coming here on 40 soon--have I ever heard anything remotely like that statement.
Routine physical/blood clot/ "minimally invasive" CRANIOTOMY????
Nope, never have those words been used in sentences together before.

anonamom,
THANK YOU! I am glad to see someone I know verify what CTH said, and what various commenters pointed out.
My mother had brain surgery for a large meningioma when she was in her late 50's. It left her unable to walk and took her months before she could speak intelligibly and even then, she had no sense of time passing, so someone had to be with her at all times, or she would think she had been left alone for hours.
When I saw "craniotomy" and "routine" and a 5 cm. blood clot "sent to pathology" my radar went ALERT!
Thanks for commenting about that!

Oh, I don't know about that A'MoM. I thought that was the standard diagnosis and procedure for the Incans:

[From the interwebs, and the previous page] subdural haematoma treatment: Surgery involves either making holes in the skull (called burr holes) or an operation called a craniotomy.
Burr holes are small holes that are drilled through the skull over the area where the subdural haematoma has formed. They allow the blood to be removed or sucked out through the holes. Stitches or staples are then used to close the incision.
I suspect we are not talking craniotomy.
Posted by: sbwaters | July 16, 2017 at 09:13 PM
henry, no, doctors do what the patient wants them to do, which may include talking with their family--
but patients make the call on their care.
Posted by: anonamom | July 16, 2017 at 09:14 PM
Sbwaters,
The word "craniotomy" was used in the press release. Assuming that they got info from Mayo and did not improvise, that word has a particular medical meaning.
And if they DID improvise, why would they use such a word?
I smell something fishy here, myself.

As you all well know from your own "routine physicals", evacuations of blood clots in the brain are not a part of that visit.
Somebody getting on their high horse--like Mayo is wont to do at times--might call Burr holes a "minimally invasive craniotomy" instead of what they are commonly known as.
But Burr holes are most certainly not part of a routing physical either.
Now, he may well have needed a scan as part of his follow up for melanoma, and this blood clot was found "incidentally" as they say on that scan. It can happen, and may explain his weird decision making of late--increased intra cranial pressure, decreasing cerebral blood flow and oxygenation.
Posted by: anonamom | July 16, 2017 at 09:29 PM
What is burr hole craniotomy?
The smallest type of craniotomy is referred to as a “burr hole,” also known as trephination. The process involves drilling a small hole into the skull, revealing the underlying dura mater, the outermost of the 3 meninges covering the brain.Sep 17, 2015

McCain had no business running for reelection at age 80. Of course the voters ultimately chose, but once he chose to run it would have been hard for a Republican to oppose him. He could have had a hand in choosing his successor. Instead he'll probably be carried out horizontally before the end of his term.
And if it hasn't been reported, in AZ the governor appoints a senator's replacement if the seat is vacated, and it has to be someone from the same party as the previous senator.

Bush 43 invaded Iraq with no clear plan for managing the post-liberation occupation.
Yeah, well, Zarqawi and people like him had been using Iraq as a home base and we killed them there, and Saddam and his kids were world-class human rights abusers, so who needs a steenkin' clean-up plan? Omelettes, broken eggs.
The somewhat shady Larry Johnson says something I've been thinking lately, i.e. if Trump had truly been colluding with the Ruskies he wouldn't need some info from Jr's entertainment buddy's buddy. He'd also be able to pick up the double top-secret batphone to the Kremlin and verify the meeting attendee's bona fides.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/16/donald-trump-jrs-meeting-with-russians-undermines-/?utm_source=onesignal&utm_campaign=pushnotify&utm_medium=push
The entire collusion fever is no doubt predicated solely on the shoddy setup of this meeting. And there's every reason to suspect that Mueller's focus will be on getting some Trump official to fudge a detail of what happened when so that he can Scooter Libby that official and watch as the Dems try to take that to town, impeachment-wise. Crazy world, but Donald Trump is not one of the crazed.

Doing catch-up and just got to Clarice's link from the previous thread to this: McCain and the Trump-Russia Dossier: What Did He Know, and When?
McCain is exactly the right person for a "What did you now and when did you know it?" question under Oath.
A British spy. An Arizona senator. And one inflammatory dossier on Donald Trump. The connection between them is starting to unravel...
That link led me on to this unexpectedly from McClatchey: John McCain faces questions in Trump-Russia dossier case
Now, two lawsuits — one in the United States and a second in the U.K. — are being brought by lawyers for Aleksej Gubarev, a Cyprus-based Internet entrepreneur whom Steele’s Russian sources accused of cyber spying against the Democratic Party leadership.
According to a new court document in the British lawsuit, counsel for defendants Steele and Orbis repeatedly point to McCain, R-Ariz....The court document obtained by McClatchy confirms that Sir Andrew Wood, a former British ambassador to Moscow and a Russia adviser to former Prime Minister Tony Blair, discussed the 35-page dossier with McCain....
I have zero faith in our US Courts to do any legitimate investigation, but I do have hope that the Brit Courts may not be as totally corrupt as ours therefore something may ultimately come of this.
As for McCain unexpectedly being in the Hospital undergoing brain surgery, it brings to mind that scene in 3 Days of the Condor where Max Von Sydow unexpectedly assassinates Atwood, and Redford asks the proper question:
Redford – 'You're working for the Company again?'
Sydow – 'Yes. I am.'
Redford – 'Jesus, they took you back...'
Sydow – 'Just for this. For Atwood.'
Redford – 'How... he's with the Company – why?.'
Sydow– 'I don't interest myself in 'why',
I think more often in terms of 'when',
sometimes 'where' -
always 'how much?'.
I suspect he was about to become an embarrassment.
As you are.'
Redford-(Removes glasses in final acceptance)

I couldn't make head nor tails of it so I kept walking."
We're in Salt Lake City on our way to Yellowstone and saw the exact same thing last night walking back to our room.
I had the same response. Just kept walking. :)

July 16, 2014 - 'Maryland Governor And Wannabe 2016 Presidential Candidate Martin O'Malley: Compassion Demands We Let the Surge Children Stay in America, But Not in Maryland. In Other States. States with GOP Governors.'
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/350521.php
"-- But before they hung up, O'Malley told Muñoz not to send any of the children to the facility in Westminster, Md., that the White House was looking at. It’s a conservative part of the state, he warned. The children were at risk of getting harassed, or worse, he said.--
"Or worse, he said." Bear in mind he says that these kids face "certain death" -- but he says don't send them to Maryland.
They'll get worse than that in Maryland, and he's too weak a governor to keep the peace."

"Here is the Rolling Stone List of Death:
Pistols
Revolvers (also handguns)
Rifles
Shotguns and...
Derringers
In other words, all guns. Plus Derringers, just for good measure."

"The Journolist discussion took place nearly a decade ago, but in retrospect, I’m struck by how these three basic approaches—kill it, ignore it, call them haters—seem like media archetypes now."

Another reminder about JournoList - "At one point, their discussions involved a proposed government crackdown on Fox News.
The very existence of Fox News, meanwhile, sends Journolisters into paroxysms of rage. When Howell Raines charged that the network had a conservative bias, the members of Journolist discussed whether the federal government should shut the channel down.
“I am genuinely scared” of Fox, wrote Guardian columnist Daniel Davies, because it “shows you that a genuinely shameless and unethical media organisation *cannot* be controlled by any form of peer pressure or self-regulation, and nor can it be successfully cold-shouldered or ostracised. In order to have even a semblance of control, you need a tough legal framework.” Davies, a Brit, frequently argued the United States needed stricter libel laws.
“I agree,” said Michael Scherer of Time Magazine. Roger “Ailes understands that his job is to build a tribal identity, not a news organization. You can’t hurt Fox by saying it gets it wrong, if Ailes just uses the criticism to deepen the tribal identity.”
Jonathan Zasloff, a law professor at UCLA, suggested that the federal government simply yank Fox off the air. “I hate to open this can of worms,” he wrote, “but is there any reason why the FCC couldn’t simply pull their broadcasting permit once it expires?”

.McCain's diagnosis doesn't make sense?
I wonder if he is in the same hospital the Clinton's and Kerry go to.
Shades of the first Manchurian Candidate movie.

The Pelletier girl was as much a prisoner of the state as little Charlie is. Exposure works though--which is why those hours spent online/writing emails/tweeting are valuable (she tells herself).
I think our POTUS could use a "Hey there, great job guy!" postcard this week--aol leads its daily propaganda to me with "Lowest Approval Ratings EVER" this beautiful morning.
Or a strongly supportive editorial in a local newspaper, if you happen to be in a position to do that. I'm sure that would catch his (or Kellyanne's)_
eye!

Not much news this morning.
Fox and Friends just had a Russia argument and now is going to dissect polls. I turned them off.
Think I will go back to bed since I have been up since 4.

What you say about CBO may be true, but they score what they're asked to score. As such, they're frequently the lipstick applied to various pigs.
I ignore CBO's opinion of most everything.

This is a horrible story. I guess details will come out, but hard to see how it's anything but murder. Had she been black we'd be hearing much more about it.
