Only the American press calls it "The British Open". It is called The Open Championship since the first one in 1860. If you go, all the merchandise is labelled "The Open".

All other "opens" need a modifier to distiguish it from The Open (i.e. US Open, Canadian Open,etc).

In the United States of America that I know it has never, ever been "The Open" and it most definitely isn't today. That title is reserved for the United States Open.

I can relate. I had an experience as blue four early in my flying career in the UK that was essentially a "do not pair" request. After some confused maneuvers of the formation he was leading, I got read the riot act by the flight lead during the mission debrief that was just way over the top. I went directly into the schedulers and told them that if they ever scheduled me in one of his flights again, I would call in DNIF (Duty Not Including Flying, usually some illness that was a grounding event).
