It's Breakfast at Wimbledon so we are prepping for bagels with Roger. As if we didn't get enough Bagels with Boston last night. And just in case no one's dead on their feet the Yanks and Red Sox play another eighteen innings (at least!) today. As the great Ernie Banks never said, "Let's play two times two!".

If he would only retire - not only from the Senate, but from public life entirely, never to be interviewed or quoted ever again - I would wish him a long and happy and healthy retirement. Because I can be kind and forgiving. Sometimes.
But since he won't, I will not wish him long life, happiness or health.

Thanks. I have the ebst research team right here.
Here's an interesting observation from David Goldman (Spengler):
Hostility to Trump is all about Islam. Trump won the primaries by proposing a travel ban which, according to all polls, had the support of a majority of Americans. The Europeans want a great civilizational compromise with Islam, and Trump is a disrupter. The neo-cons want to create Muslim democracy and Trump has tossed them out with yesterday's newspaper. The feigned outrage over Russia is also about Islam: Trump wants a deal with Russia to contain Islamic terrorism; the neo-cons see a democratized Muslim world as an ally against Russia. The CIA had a huge investment in "moderate Syrian rebels" and the Obamoilds had a huge investment in giving Iran a seat at the table. Trump has overturned the table. This is too simple, but it's not.

Clarice,
After watching the melt-down of Max Boot on Tucker's show, coupled with the continuing poisonous comments of Egg McMuffin, Bill Kristol, and Jonah Goldberg on Twitter (also Stephen Hayes, lest I forget), I think that comment makes a lot of sense.
McMullin seems to post based on the idea that Russia is a sinister enemy and Trump is treasonous. He has past ties to the CIA.
Kristol and Goldberg seem to have this idea that Trump is a nascient dictator and also rather stupid. I would put them in the neo-con Islamic democracy camp. (They never did explain how democracy would come to places like Saudi Arabia.)
As you know, I follow Thomas Wictor on Twitter. He has lots of interesting videos from Iraq and Syria, and one thing he thinks is happening is that uniting the various Iraqi tribes and groups to drive out ISIS (whom all groups hate) they are forging in fire a national identity. I hope that's true and time will tell, but it's an interesting thought and runs counter to the rather patronizing attitude many of the pundits (including those I named here) seem to have.

WASHINGTON -- Klaus Eberwein, a former Haitian government official who was expected to testify against alleged Clinton Foundation corruption and malpractice next week, has been found dead in Miami via gunshot wound to the head.
The death was ruled a suicide. Eberwein was 50 and reportedly told acquaintances he feared for his life for his fierce criticism of the Clinton Foundation.

I have both volumes. I think economic history is too much neglected with emphasis being placed on "great men", and not enough on all the details of of commerce and its impact on events.
Now, for example, when too many envision non-existent Russian tanks riding across the Hungarian Plains and not enough on the fact that the country is broke and needs oils and gas to replenish its coffers and to strangle its neighbors who need oil and gas.

Now it's Howie Kurtz, so I am happy to turn him off and head out on the town with the usual suspects.
Posted by: daddy | July 16, 2017 at 11:03 AM
Jane,
If you read down through that talk Bannon gave to a group at the Vatican, you come across this:
"You know, Putin’s been quite an interesting character. He’s also very, very, very intelligent. I can see this in the United States where he's playing very strongly to social conservatives about his message about more traditional values, so I think it's something that we have to be very much on guard of. Because at the end of the day, I think that Putin and his cronies are really a kleptocracy, that are really an imperialist power that want to expand. However, I really believe that in this current environment, where you're facing a potential new caliphate that is very aggressive that is really a situation — I'm not saying we can put it on a back burner — but I think we have to deal with first things first."
This talk was given in 2014. Bannon is the chief strategist for Trump. There is absolutely zero reason to think Trump doesn't have a plan and doesn't know what Putin is up to.

Lately the news of the Muslim invasion of Europe makes me nauseated, and I mean in a sick way, not outrage. Since the summer we saw the torrents of Muslim men (think 2014) I've been angry and puzzled about this, but now I'm truly just sickened, just watching and envisioning the future. And, wondering, WHY so many fools-- welcoming fools--across this globe don't see the danger either. Reading this Roger Simon column, plus the Cheryl Benard National Interest article continues to confirm my outrage.
https://pjmedia.com/rogerlsimon/2017/07/16/i-have-seen-the-future-and-its-miserable/
"Oslo in particular is a bizarre experience. The port is super modern and gorgeous, splendid apartments of the most up-to-date architecture overlooking the cruise ships and yachts. The streets are lined with smart cafes and shops you might see on Rodeo Drive or the Via Condotti. There's a modern opera house to rival Sydney's.
"But walk a little further and it's a different story. Heading up hill toward the Munch Museum, you begin to enter the Third World. The faces stare at you with hostile looks as you pass, as if you are intruding on their territory. Yesterday, according to someone traveling with me, a group of Muslims started chanting in a local park and attempted to raise an Islamic flag over the city hall. It was pulled down immediately, she said.
"I wondered what Norway's renowned painter Edvard Munch would have thought. Was this worth a silent scream, like his famous painting? Was a combination of guilt from World War II and North Sea oil riches destroying his country, now one of the wealthiest in the world? It certainly looked that way. What happened to those marauding vikings, forever at war with each other? At least they were willing to protect their own cultures. These days they are objects of curiosity, or simply tourist attractions, their boats preserved as museum pieces in both Oslo and Stockholm, yet another similarity between the two cities."

joan,
Europe has very little time to reverse things. Italy is overwhelmed, Germany is in denial, and I think France is fed up but it remains to be seen if Macron will act or acquiesce to Merkel's wishes.
It may be that the Sons of Norway and the German-American societies and such end up preserving European culture here, as a relic of a civilization past.

So, this morning Instapundit links to a piece where Andrew McCarthy, wearing his concerned face, concernedly strokes his chin, and in a deep, concerned voice, intones, "This whole Russian thing is very concerning."
Why does anyone ever listen to Andrew "Fitzpatrick is an honest prosecutor, not a partisan hack, swearsies!" McCarthy ever again? His track record on the declarations of the goodwill and honesty of nakedly partisan prosecutorial shills is so poor as to be laughable. For awhile when I cared what NRO actually said, I would try and take the time to sign into the comments of his articles and remind everyone of his hilariously wrong-headed championship of so many Democratic operatives with law degrees and ask why we should listen to a single word the fucktard said.
Once NRO revealed itself to be just as deep into the swamp as anyone else, I stopped bothering, but really, why would anyone give Andy McCarthy, in particular, the time of day. Didn't he recently opine on the goodwill and general solidness of Mueller and Comey? In general, a totally idiotic person whose views are worse than a waste of time.

I just read the transcript. If I followed correctly what that ghoul said, he wants people who develop a condition to be able to not have health insurance until they find out they have something serious, then get it while paying the same amount as everybody else. That destroys the concept of insurance risk pools. The only way that could be actuarially sound would be to have current rates reflect the present value of the cost of adding all those future people but just spread out over current participants. Current participants would be grossly penalized while the deadbeats, who are the only people Kevorkian Junior seems to care about, get off scot free.

We had coffee with A(bub)'s doctor son over on Whidbey yesterday. Great meet up. He doesn't read JOM, but would fit right in. He's an ER specialist and mostly gets stuff like balled up motorcycle riders given the NAS next door. (Noticed a lot of hot cars rolling by, as well.) Used to work in Motown where several bullets had to be extracted every night.
BTW the airstrip over there is nuts. We'd ridden in there on local commuter flights a couple times years ago, but first time in our bird. It was gusting down the runway abut 20 kts, but the strip is about 2 ft wider that our gear stance and that made for a fair pucker factor.
