That's a lot of stitches! Food is probably a lot less important part of the equation than keeping an active person from doing things that will stretch the wound apart before it knits. Even with the comparatively modest gash on my calf, I was told to stay off my rowing machine and even to be careful about picking up heavy stuff (which, as I'm sure we've all been told a gazillion times, you're supposed to do with your legs not your back). I was pretty good about it, but that may be harder on a good old boy. If white bread and beans will keep him in his seat, I'd say go white bread! Probably best to stick to the dock for the fishing. My brother and I are about 16 months apart too! Coming face to face with the fact that anyone you love is vulnerable is truly unsettling.
The worst part about getting old is having to start being so damn careful about so many things you used to do without thinking twice. Ladders, where both balance and distractibility come into play, can be especially hazardous. It's hard to put off that little chore, just because you happen to be home alone....
I have been fussed at for planting a hydrangea in the back yard because it makes it hard to mow. This sounds just like her father, although I won't tell her that.

On the unfortunate and counterproductive disrespect in the black community for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas:
Damn, RG, that is hard to read. Out of curiosity, how is Ben Carson regarded by those same people?
Posted by: Captain Hate | July 03, 2017 at 11:50 PM
These are personal opinions only, of course, but I'm much less certain how Carson is collectively viewed. However, my suspicion is the he is viewed much, much better because he is essentially a "neutral" personality in the minds of many (as neutral as a Black Republican can be, that is), is strong in his faith, and has a black wife.
Both Ben Carson and Clarence Thomas are credits to the God-fearing individuals who raised them, the can-do nation that inspired them, and themselves. I celebrate them and so much more on this Independence Day.
Do you remember who it was that lauded TM as a "forensic" blogger? That struck me as a real badge of honor. Wolverine's summer camp sounds like one I might actually have enjoyed! Oddly enough, I did not enjoy being sent to the New Hampshire outback, where everything you did, from getting out of bed to getting back into it, either won or lost a point for your "team." I was just not a good little Mohican. After bruising my tailbone in a fall, it took me more than a decade to overcome my fear of horses. They pushed you so hard to make an impressive showing for parents' weekend that you never had a chance to get comfortable in the saddle.
One of the things my daughter has incorporated into her courses is teaching her nursing students how assess all the various "scientific" studies floating around and how to separate the wheat from the chaff. It's the kind of skill that's sorely lacking in so many fields of endeavor these days, isn't it?
From last thread discussion on Justice Thomas: He nailed it in his dissent in Kelo IMO--the worst decision of the SCOTUS in my lifetime. Shows the importance of having a judge with some practical experience of the real lives of the poor.
Posted by: Clarice Feldman | July 04, 2017 at 06:42 AM
Yep, yep. Thank you for this prompt, Clarice. I'm building a brief file on the man and Kelo was a good reminder. I can easily see the day (I suspect it is fast approaching, relatively speaking) where Justice Thomas is universally seen as a giant of the Court *because* of that very persuasive Kelo dissent and eclipses even Thurgood Marshall in the minds of African American legal scholars.
As a uniquely discrete and insular minority in this nation, the Kelo dissent will eventually be championed in the black community -- no doubt about that at all.
I don't remember who said that, jmh--but that's the way I think of him. I did get a text from the wolverine last night and sh'e loving it. It's not all science--after all these classes they have sports and plays and just plain fun. The Johns Hopkins program for these kids are really first rate. Imagine a camp where you solve a murder! She's an excellent writer and I hope this spurs her taste for mystery writing, if not forensic analysis on its own. I bought her "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" to read when camp's over (at Frau's suggestion) so I'll probably get a critique on what the author got wrong now that she's an "expert". %^)
I loved my 2 weeks at camp each summer. For one thing my mother's cooking was so bad, I thought camp food was marvelous--but I loved it all--it was very laid back and the only camp at the time in the area that made room for kids with diabetes and mixed poor and rich kids together. I did get good camper marks for agreeing to ket a bedwetter share by tent on a camp outing--I told her I had faith in her, but I did keep an eye open all night just in case...
Happy Independence Day, all JOMers! The original Brexit. Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful 4th.
Suppose to hit triple digits in Le Bois today and for the rest of the week. Fireworks are normally staged in a municipal park downtown but with the damage done by the huge spring runoff, they decided to move the show west...right across the river from us.
Tomorrow is two weeks from surgery. I'm walking ~4.5 miles a day with a heavy duty back brace and trekking poles. Lost 12 lbs.
Applewood smoked baby back ribs for dinner tonight along with a '10 Shafer "Relentless" Syrah.
And thanks to whomever fumigated this place. I hope it can stay this way.
People say Trump is unstable for tweeting memes but Macron is going around declaring himself a Roman god.
This tweet is commenting on a Reuters story that Macron wants a "Jupiterian" presidency, remote and above the fray, weighing his rare pronouncements carefully.
MM, I saw another article on Macaroon - he's not doing a traditional Bastille Day q&a with the press because his thinking is "too complex" for the common people to understand.
I don't see what's so confusing about "raise taxes even more" and "time for the weekly call to get my marching orders from Frau Merkel."
RG sez: I can easily see the day (I suspect it is fast approaching, relatively speaking) where Justice Thomas is universally seen as a giant of the Court *because* of that very persuasive Kelo dissent and eclipses even Thurgood Marshall in the minds of African American legal scholars.

You're all so darn smart, talented & share informative links so I wanted to thank you all for the many years of laughter, insight & interesting discussions even if I lurk most of the time. Y'all say what I'm thinking without a need to comment much...
A special thanks to the troops serving here & abroad in dangerous territory. May God bless them all free from harm. May God bless President Trump & First Lady Melania. Who would've thought this gift was even possible a year ago?
Have a Happy Fourth of July Holiday everyone!

I am going outside to strip the grass from around the shrub and then will buy some mulch.
Back later.

Clarice,
Do you remember who it was that lauded TM as a "forensic" blogger?

Posted by: RattlerGator | July 04, 2017 at 11:16 AM

I am used to French presidents being arrogant (I came of age during DeGaulle) but really, this guy takes the cake as he has NO accomplishments. At least DeGaulle led the Free French Army during WWII.
As far as I can tell, this guy has been an invisible bureaucrat and no one really knows much about him. Seems to me that we should have a lot of entertainment from his Olympian pronouncements over the next 5 years.
