Dave (in MA) I❤️KF

Just in case.

Happy 4th TM :-)

In about two weeks my future includes a family road trip to Yellowstone. I assume one mosies around the various highlights.
But our schedule also includes being in Salt Lake City for a couple days. I wonder if JOMers can recommend attractions in SLC?

Love this from Miss Marple's link on the previous thread about Trump's White House Staff being way smaller and way cheaper for the Taxpayers than Obama's bloated Staff.

Another key difference between the Obama and Trump White House is the first lady’s staff. Michelle Obama retained 24 staffers in the first year of the Obama White House. Melania Trump currently employs four — a chief of staff who is also listed as advisor to the president, a deputy chief of staff, a communications director, and a scheduler.

Obama warns Americans about too much patriotism — on July 4th weekend!

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Good morning!

daddy, Great photo examples of a picture saying it all.

Don't you just love that comparison of staff between Michelle and Melania? I assume the extra 20 were to make Michelle semi-presentable. When does her diatribe manifesto harangue book come out?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

This editorial was tweeted by Secretary Sonny Perdue. The beef deal was really important to the states which are beef-producers:

Miss Marple, here's more on Michelle Obama's Staff

First Lady Requires More Than Twenty Attendants

As of July 7, 2009:

1. $172,2000 – Sher, Susan (Chief Of Staff)

2. $140,000 – Frye, Jocelyn C. (Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Policy And Projects For The First Lady)

3. $113,000 – Rogers, Desiree G. (Special Assistant to the President and White House Social Secretary)

4. $102,000 – Johnston, Camille Y. (Special Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the First Lady)

5. Winter, Melissa E. (Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)

6. $90,000 – Medina, David S. (Deputy Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)

7. $84,000 – Lelyveld, Catherine M. (Director and Press Secretary to the First Lady)

8. $75,000 – Starkey, Frances M. (Director of Scheduling and Advance for the First Lady)

9. $70,000 – Sanders, Trooper (Deputy Director of Policy and Projects for the First Lady)

10. $65,000 – Burnough, Erinn J. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)

11. Reinstein, Joseph B. (Deputy Director and Deputy Social Secretary)

12. $62,000 – Goodman, Jennifer R. (Deputy Director of Scheduling and Events Coordinator For The First Lady)

13. $60,000 – Fitts, Alan O. (Deputy Director of Advance and Trip Director for the First Lady)

14. Lewis, Dana M. (Special Assistant and Personal Aide to the First Lady)

15. $52,500 – Mustaphi, Semonti M. (Associate Director and Deputy Press Secretary To The First Lady)

16. $50,000 – Jarvis, Kristen E. (Special Assistant for Scheduling and Traveling Aide To The First Lady)

17. $45,000 – Lechtenberg, Tyler A. (Associate Director of Correspondence For The First Lady)

18. Tubman, Samantha (Deputy Associate Director, Social Office)

19. $40,000 – Boswell, Joseph J. (Executive Assistant to the Chief Of Staff to the First Lady)

20. $36,000 – Armbruster, Sally M. (Staff Assistant to the Social Secretary)

21. Bookey, Natalie (Staff Assistant)

22. Jackson, Deilia A. (Deputy Associate Director of Correspondence for the First Lady)

Note: This does not include makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, 49, and “First Hairstylist” Johnny Wright, 31, both of whom travelled aboard Air Force One to Europe.

And according to this Hill Story President Trump is going to save us $22 Million by working with a leaner White House payroll

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Notice no one ever really mentioned that staff in the mainstream press, except in passing.

Michelle's Mirror would tell you she probably had one staffer just to keep track of her wigs.
(Which no one ever mentioned, even though it was obvious with the abrupt changes in hari styles.)

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Interesting post from over at CTH:

The New York Times mind-bending double standard.

Re: President Trump’s CNN wrestling tweet:
“I think it is unseemly that the President would attack journalists for doing their jobs, and encourage such anger at the media,” said Dean Baquet, executive editor of the New York Times.

Re: the staged the assassination of President Trump:

“As an institution that believes in free speech for the arts as well as the media, we [theatre sponsor New York Times] support the right of the Public Theater to stage the production as they chose.”

Body slam? Nit pickers so claim it was a clothesline. So even the "reporting" on the tweet is fake news.

32% tax increase for IL. No spending reforms at all. No pension fixes. But you do get the Obama library agitation center.

This will be fun. https://wordsmith.org/words/today.html

This week's words are real people who become verbs. Garg gives the example of a real person named Boycott. Today's person and word are Grimthorpe, which I had never heard of.

Reminds me of the time I went to look something up and about 5 minutes later a staff attorney and my paralegal came in my office looking sheepish. I asked what's up. They said they were curious about what word I didn't know. Hah.

I used to tell my kids that a good word has a sentence full of meaning in a single word.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

This has a link to his Periscope video, which I watched yesterday and is quite good at gently convincing the viewer that Trump's tweet was deliberate and strategic. You can skip the last third of the video, which is just advice on how to get dates and stuff like that.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

As you all know, the video that President Trump tweeted originated at The_Donald Reddit site.

I was just over there and ran across this post:

[–]varikonniemi 1 point 46 minutes ago

Congratulations guys, well memed. The CNN video was blasted on all main news channels several times during the day in FINLAND.

That is really important, because one of the evil forces undermining American policy in the Trump era is CNN International.

I am not only impressed that the video has had that wide a reach, but that The_Donald has a member in Finland.

Zerohedge is reporting thata King Salman of Saudi Arabia will not attend the G-20. No explanation was given.

What I do not know is if the Crown Prince will be attending. I also don't know if there are military developments with ISIS or Iran which require him to be at home.

Nor do I know if there is trouble with the guy who used to be his heir.

So, something to watch.

I don't know if this is the same column by Kathleen Parker since I can't access it at the WaPo, but here's the last graph from one I can access, titled Indecent Overexposure:

Mika Brzezinski is wonder woman -- smart, strong, wealthy -- and engaged to marry her best friend. I seriously doubt she's been wounded by Trump's pathetic second-grader taunts. But I get it. The most one can hope for these days is that enough Republican men can be shamed into defending Brzezinski, a woman many of them know personally -- and who has thumbs-down power over potential guests on the show everybody in Washington watches.

Parker seems crazy to me, but it's probably because she's stupid enough to watch that show.

As for the Trump CNN "Wrestlemania" tweet, I don't know what's playing in Finland but within the last 5 minutes I have seen it on French 24 in English, and on BBC. Both play up the claim that it is Trump urging violence against reporters.

De-lurking from Lake Placid, current temperature 58.

From CH's K-Pork link:

Plenty of physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists think so and have written me volumes in off-the-record diagnoses. A group of them have joined forces to co-write a book due out this fall.

As Miss M has pointed out, it's a breach of professional ethics to diagnose someone without an examination. Apparently psychologists, like journalists, have decided to abandon professionalism for the greater good as they see it.

And for all the clucking by journalists about Trump being unpresidential, how quickly they forget the shameful behavior of one Democrat after another--Kennedy, LBJ, Clinton, for a start--tarnished the office, by their behavior, not just words. But of course Democrats get a pass.

A reminder of what a pig LBJ was:

But he launched "The Great Society" so all is forgiven.

James D.

And for all the clucking by journalists about Trump being unpresidential, how quickly they forget the shameful behavior of one Democrat after another

They also forget how crappily Democrats treat THEM. Obamacare sat on ha hands while the Iranians held a WaPo reporter for 4 years, and while ISIS tortured and behaved journalists. They sat there and took it when Obama launched into off-the record profanity-laced lectures against them. They laughed it off when Hillary had her people herd them around with ropes as though they were below-average kindergarteners on a field trip. They were silent when Obama's justice department jailed and prosecuted a Fox News reporter. And on and on and on.

I'll start to get upset over what President Trump tweets about reporters just as soon as reporters themselves get upset over Democrat presidents putting them in jail or letting them he murdered by terrorists.

Actually I won't get upset even then. Femall.

James D.

Also: when folks at MSM outlets start showing some concern or care for the ordinary, average citizens whose lives get ruined when they make mistakes or join in on a sensational story (that ultimately turns out to be overblown or totally wrong) like sharks smelling blood, then maybe I'll start to give a damn what mean horrible things the President says about them.

Good Morning! The state government in Maine is still shut down, but LePage wasn't seen on any beaches over the week-end. :) The state parks remain open here. The special budget panel endorsed a two year budget last night, which includes a lodging tax increase from 9%to 10.5%. LePage won't sign any budget with an increase in taxes. LePage also wants a pilot program for a statewide teacher contract, which the Democrats (teachers union) have rejected. Stay tuned!

I wonder if Trump has a trick up his sleeve for when he meets Putin in a few days?

My guess is yes. I can envision Trump tweeting something like "I'm doing the work the American Media refuse to do, by actually asking Putin what Obama meant when he said "Tell Vlad I'll be more flexible after the Election."

He could do that in a serious tone, simply pointing out that in this entire Russian collusion hysteria the Media never even bothered to ask the single Russian collusion question Americans want answered---What exactly was it Obama was offering the Russians to be more flexible about, and why would Obama be more flexible after the Election?

Any bets?

As for the Trump CNN "Wrestlemania" tweet, I don't know what's playing in Finland but within the last 5 minutes I have seen it on French 24 in English, and on BBC. Both play up the claim that it is Trump urging violence against reporters.

candy asses.

I would love it if he did that "What exactly was it Obama was offering the Russians to be more flexible about" question, daddy.

And about the spin overseas on that video, they can spin it however they like -- they can't stop its positive effect for Trump.

CBS Sunday Morning had a piece on John Mellencamp Sunday and in one segment he (and Jane Pauley) seemed to lament that on a certain level people tune out what the artist (or presenter) MEANT to produce and turn the product into what THEY see or hear.

So, I doubt if they can turn that Trump/CNN WWE meme into a negative for Trump. It simply can't be done. It's either neutral or positive because anyone looking at it negatively *already* had a negative take on Trump.

Microsoft scammers caught in London. They hired a call center in India and gave them scripts.

Both play up the claim that it is Trump urging violence against reporters.

Yet another example of the left's scam of accusing Trump of doing exactly what they themselves are guilty of. Virtually all the violence that has actually occurred has been against Trump supporters and Republicans, egged on by the MSM and "artists." I don't think anyone outside of the MSM bubble is fooled.

Here's How To Deal With Trump's Tweets: Stop Caring About Them - Kurt Schlichter

If the hyperventilating faux outrage over Donald Trump's tweets about that pair of home-wrecking nobodies on MSNBC was actually presented in good faith, it would be merely be stupid. But it is not presented in good faith. It is a transparent attempt to drag Trump off-point and tie him up in a never-ending discussion about his completely irrelevant personal failings, even though liberals slobber over all sorts of people with personal failings who just happen to support their fascist dreams. It's not working, because Trump cares nothing about what these fussy nannies shriek while clutching their pearls, nor do his voters really care. But it is still annoying.

No, his tweets are not annoying. I don't care about his tweets, so they don't annoy me. I didn't vote for Donald Trump to be a role model or a moral paragon. I voted for him to not be Hillary Clinton, and to incrementally move towards actual conservatism. Like everyone else who voted for him, I knew he wasn't a doctrinaire conservative. But he believed in some conservative things, and that was better than someone who believed in no conservative things, and who wanted to stamp her sensible shoe into our faces forever.

Tom Bowler

From the WSJ

President Trump is having a hard time getting legislation through Congress, but his Administration is moving fast to roll back Barack Obama’s pen-and-a-phone lawmaking. The latest example, which barely registered in the press, is the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision last week to rescind the unilateral rewrite of the Clean Water Act.

So, instead of screeching about the number of babies that are going to die because the EPA no longer regulates the puddle in your backyard, the press talks incessantly about Trump's tweets.

Another example of gains that go unnoticed is the beef deal with China that MM linked above at 4:39 AM.

Ya gotta love it. Trump forges ahead with the dismantling of he Obama legacy and MFM barely notices. They only have eyes for tweets.

Heh, it used to be only the huntress, could drive Parker to distraction,(it was a short trip) yes James d, they belong in the agonizer
Starting with mazzetti, who burned the network ran by claridge (actually division) that helped find their reporter, Rohde.

"Any bets?"

My bet is that stays in his back pocket until after he gets to know Putin, and figures out what we agree on.

So my pet theory, re the British side of the surveillance was actually conducted by a cutout like capital security, where Mr taut hangs his hat.

Repeating from the end of the last thread [and thnx to those who already have answered]:

Dear JOMers,

Your assignment for [today], should you choose, is to recommend titles and authors suitable for one or more of the school grades 1-8, that would nudge a student to develop for him- or herself a greater understanding of civics.

Fiction or non-fiction allowed. Just eminently readable and not doctrinaire. After all, we want students to be able to defend themselves against even teachers.

Please indicate your suggested grade level.

The goal would be to develop course guidelines and subject matter.

I thank you in advance.

WaPo’s Ignatius: Fighters in Syria cheer at mention of Trump name

Ignatius also said that the name Trump was cheered whenever it was mentioned during meetings Ignatius had with Syrian forces trying to take out Assad. One Syrian commander praised Trump for having what Ignatius described as a vulgar term that in Spanish is “cojones.”

DAVID IGNATIUS: I’m going to say something that in some ways is sympathetic to Trump. As I traveled across Syria, meeting with Syrian fighters who were trying to take down the regime of Bashar al Assad, every time the name “President Trump” was mentioned, there were cheers from the audience. One Syrian Kurdish commander used a vulgar term, in Spanish it would be cojones, to describe what President Trump has got and why they like him.

More seriously, the big attacks that have taken place around Raqqa, one in particular, a surprise landing by helicopter, I was told by the top US commanders, would not have taken place if it hadn’t been for President Trump’s decision to delegate military authorities down to the level of command. I mean, under Obama that would have taken a couple weeks of White House meetings and then they still wouldn’t have made up their mind.

In this case there was not one meeting. They just said, General Townsend, the commander in Baghdad, you decide. And three days later, these Kurds who’d never seen an airplane or helicopter had been helicoptered across a lake for a surprise attack that is probably the most daring and decisive of the war. So, do need to put this in perspective. Yes, there are a lot of people around the world who are appalled, but there are some people who say this image of strength that he’s projecting is something that they like.

sbw-are you familiar with the Jean Fritz' books that make early elementary students believe they are there with these famous people from history?

I started collecting them when we were at the chatham bars inn for several days in what turned out to be a noreaster week. I eventually built up a full set of them that is around here somewhere.

I actually really recommend the Redwall books about the Warrior mice that really start at about 4-6 for a fluent reader. My son would get 100 pages from the end and have me track down the next book after he learned the print size in paperbacks makes them harder to read.

You can ask what that has to do with civics, but I know how much of civics now in ed is really about internalizing the required altruism ethos. Books that nurture that right to be an individual to me lay a foundation for who we used to be.

You know, that Egg McMuffin guy is really a case, and why he hasn't been investigated is a mystery to me.

Lots of unanswered questions about him.

I also recommend Not One Damsel in Distress: World Folktales for Strong Girls for anyone with daughters or granddaughters. It makes a good read-to book before they can read and a reader of every other page as they learn to read.

Same reasoning as above on why putting yourself in a variety of situation where doing the right thing matters is actually good preparation for civics.

sbw, Ben Franklin's Autobiography would be good for grades 7 or 8. I don't recall much 'civics' in it, but the model of self-reliance and self-improvement is timeless and quintessentially American.

The shrinks abandoned any concept of professionalism when they took the homos off the list of being mentally ill despite having a higher than average rate of suicide. Doubtlessly there was some self interest involved.

True, though even before that, in the 70s, they contributed to the explosion of divorces by telling parents what they wanted to hear, which was that kids were better off if the parents split up versus staying in an unhappy marriage. Obviously that can be true in more extreme cases, but mainly it served to ease their consciences about the impact of divorce on children.

I meant what I said but you raise a good point. I don't know if any hard hitting gumshoes will ever pursue it but I strongly suspect that there's a good story to be told regarding how Ailes was dealt with. One of the reasons I got into consulting was I grew tired of corporate culture violating every fucking one of their guidelines to reward or punish who they wanted. Obama Meets With South Korean President | The Daily Caller

Former President Barack Obama seems to be feeling nostalgic for his old job, meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in Monday for 40 minutes.

The Korea Herald reported that Moon spoke about his recent meetings with President Trump in Washington and asked Obama for his advice on how to improve that relationship.

The meeting came after former Obama spoke at the Asian Leadership Conference in Indonesia. There he attacked Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate change accord.
