The social justice wars rage on at Harvard. Today we learn that Harvard is too exclusive for its own students and faculty, or something:
Harvard Panel Suggests Ending a Tradition: Exclusive Clubs
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard University’s social scene may be in for a dramatic change.
A committee of faculty and staff members and students has suggested that numerous exclusive social clubs — including the secretive “final clubs,” fraternities and sororities — be “phased out” over the next five years. If enacted, the recommendation would end a centuries-old tradition of rarefied clubs at a university that have been criticized as deeply exclusionary.
A preliminary recommendation circulated to students and faculty members on Wednesday would bar students from joining “final clubs, fraternities or sororities, or other similar private, exclusionary social organizations.” Since Harvard has not recognized the groups for decades, the committee’s suggestion would, if enacted, try to eliminate the clubs by punishing the students who participate in them.
"If enacted", but these proposals won't be. The pre-rejection scuffling might be entertaining though. As a preview of the fun to come, I do like this:
“Dean Khurana has clearly abdicated any position of principle with respect to freedom of association,” said Aaron Slipper, a senior who is part of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, which is affiliated with the Hasty Pudding Club and puts on an annual drag show.
“He’s moved the principle under which he can subject membership in organizations to administrative censure from gender exclusivity to exclusivity at all,” Mr. Slipper added. “It’s particularly rich coming from one of the most exclusive universities that exists.”
Harvard may need a new motto: We Do The Excluding So You Don't Have To.
First!

I looked at this story this morning.
It is exclusive, but it is also quite squirrelly in who among the 5% of applicants it admits it lets in. Going after these clubs, fraternities, and sororities is saying that we do not want any places where having family money or just being wicked smart can let you gather with like souls.
Period.
All students should define themselves by being among those who got in and ape whatever attitudes and beliefs the profs tell them to advocate for.

By the way, it is a center at harvard that is creating the template for what knowledge to keep and what knowledge to jettison in k-12 education globally.
This is from a conference last fall: "They have been doing the heavy lifting in terms of sifting through the knowledge domains and content that does and doesn't make it onto the majority of national curricula, and asking the important questions about what should stay and what might go. [***] asked us what kind of criteria we would use to make these kinds of decisions. For example, is there a systematic way of identifying and meta-concepts within each discipline that have the most transfer?"
With that kind of power, fraternities, sororities, and clubs are just additional institutions in the way of circumscribing what it means to know and specifying what we are all to believe and value.
They are simply the wrong kind of mediating structures for the 21st century.
Dont you just love fiat power?

Am I the only one who is stunned at President Trump's diplomatic chops? I could hardly believe Miss Ms description of the joint press conference. It seems that wherever President Trump goes abroad, it results in better relations with America, even with countries you wouldn't think it would apply to. I would have expected France to be a tough nut to crack, especially after the unilateral withdrawal from the Paris Accords. But instead, everyone is obviously disappointed about the American attitude to the climate change thing, but everyone seems to be getting down to brass tacks about other areas where our mutual interests closely coincide.
It is telling how badly we Americans have been served by the previous bunch of spoiled children running things during Obozo's era. Here we have real adults with goals that will benefit America executing our foreign policy, and it is so strange that we all stare in astonishment.
Obama and company really were feckless clowns.

henry,
There has to be a pony in there somewhere!
Here is what I think really happened. The dems were positive Hillary would win. They had pulled every trick (lies, fraudulent voting, out-right cheating, etc.) They were absolutely convinced they would win.
What they didn't count on was the huge swell of support for Trump, especially in the Rust Belt. Therefore, they are convinced some cheating was done on our side, so Russians.
Trump is right, though. From a pragmatic standpoint, Putin would have rather had Hillary to push around. It seems unlikely to me that he would have meddled in the election to get Trump elected, despite his personal distaste for Hillary.

Not me but I'm sure there were a lot of people who saw his media personna as the total picture. Back from the vet.
Momto2, thanks for asking. I took Maggie 3 weeks ago because the over-the-counter flea medicine wasn't working and she was driving herself crazy with scratching (me, too).
She had fleas, an allergy to the flea bites, and a skin infection. He also noticed she was a bit arthritic so he gave me some donated anti-inflammatory from an owner who had had to have their dog put to sleep. It's an excellent medication (Cardoprom, or something like that) but you have to have blood work done because in some dogs it damages the liver.
Today she got a check-up and blood test. Fleas are gone due to using an oral medication, and her allergy and infection is gone as well. Next week after I cash in the rest of my IRA I will go back and get another month's worth of flea meds and some more allergy medicine. I still have a month of the free antinflammatory left.

Sen. Dan Sullivan was one of 10 Republican senators who petitioned Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to cancel August recess — the monthlong work period that members of Congress spend back in their home states, holding town halls and appearing at county fairs.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski, also a Republican, was irritated at the change of plans, and said after the announcement Tuesday she thought the Senate would be better served by members who worked at least a full five days a week throughout July.

I chose reverse discrimination (Bakke was in the news and Boston was hiring minority teachers that scored poorly). I concluded that hiring from a pool of less qualified teachers resulted in lower outcomes for all students.
It was probably read by an affirmative action admission officer. Mox nix.

As I see it, the problem is the numerous underlings who are undermining Trump. Comey is gone; fired and I don't see a lot of people rushing to his defense.
If Comey can provide a list of these people to target for removal, that would be a big help. If he has information on McCain, that would be very good.
It's possible Comey was controlled by threats from Obama or Hillary. That is something we have yet to find out.
Also, this rumor of immunity may be a test to see who acts suspiciously.

jib-we spent 3 nights in positano during our month in italy with the kids in the fall of 2002. Went down to paestum to see the ruins. my son tried to teach the parrot where we stayed to say "dude get a dell". The goats scampered around on the cliffs and that odd wind came in the last day. When we left there was a hole in the rock wall on the side of the road so someone had taken a plunge.
My vodka a la penne recipe is from that restaurant. It is in the Gourmet mag cookbook and I remember walking by. With a 5, 7, and almost 10 we kept going to something family friendly.
The uncle I grew up with, who was my dad' half brother went to mit. I was in high school and asked him why he was going to summer school. He said that was when mit taught a 5th semester of calculus he wanted to take. Also something about disproving one of einstein's theories.
Oh my. later went on to work at jpl where he was the first person to ever mention El nino and oceans cooling or something. It was a good fit for his interests that no one else in the family could quite grasp.

No to be missed:
A federal appeals court on Thursday overturned the 2015 corruption conviction of Sheldon Silver, the once-powerful New York State Assembly speaker who obtained nearly $4 million in illicit payments in return for taking official actions that benefited others, according to evidence presented at his trial.
In vacating Mr. Silver’s conviction, the appellate court cited a United States Supreme Court ruling last year involving Bob McDonnell, a former Republican governor of Virginia, that narrowed the definition of the kind of official conduct that can serve as the basis of a corruption prosecution.

Yes. The ones most directly involved in the email bleaching.

*sigh*
I'm afraid that what really is happening is that TM is on vacation, and so has the leisure to read the comments and write new posts, and clean up the troll posts as they come in. And then at some point (Monday?) he's going to have to go back to his paying job, and we will be overrun by trolls again...Posted by: cathyf | July 13, 2017 at 06:50 PM
cathyf,
Clarice did contact TM about the troll problem, and he did then clean up the place. It all went on behind the scenes, and that's all that I will say.

Anonamom,
From a legal perspective I have no idea. It's MAssahusetts which could be bad or good. (Imagine a jury agreeing with that BS)
MM youmay be right, but from my perspective Comey has committed a lot of crimes, and I suspect he is more on the side of Hillary than Trump. I hope I'm wrong.
"Crush the coup, Jane."
I like it Frau! Are you ready to march again?

Ext,
One plugin that helps is killfile. Look into it, if you are not familiar with it.

FWIF, still at the gate in Newark. Boarded an hour ago but haven't moved an inch. No problem since we get paid no matter what happens to us, wherever we wind up, but man does this convince me how lucky I was to get out of the passenger hauling racket. Thankfully they are plying us with wine. The Captain said it was due to ATC flow control clobbered for slots over the pond. I have to admit it is nice to fly at midnight and have the skies pretty much all to ourselves. No Dom Perignon of course, but the red is drinkable😉

Sit there long enough daddy and MadDog will be drinkable :)

rse,
Franco's and Positano is where I go to rinse out the brain. Have to see how the new knee does now. When I did my guest lecture at MIT it was near winter and it was graduate program anyway. We had lot of fun there since I was single at the time and the grad students inundated me with their CV's over wine and beer at the outlier bars around campus
