The failing NY Times reports on the shooting at a NY hospital by a disgruntled doctor and discovers a disturbing problem with the NY State gun control laws - it is still legal to comply with them.
Despite Strict Gun Law, Troubled Doctor Was Able to Buy Assault Rifle
After 20 children and six staff members were gunned down in a Connecticut elementary school in 2012, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York decided that he had had enough.
In 2013, he introduced sweeping legislation to expand a ban on assault weapons. New York became the first state in the country to tighten its gun laws after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and Mr. Cuomo assumed a leading national role in the fight for stricter gun control.
Yet less than two weeks ago, Dr. Henry Bello, who had a criminal record and a troubled history, was able to walk into Upstate Guns and Ammo in Schenectady, N.Y., and buy a weapon that was for all intents and purposes a military-style rifle. The rifle was modified specifically to comply with New York’s laws — changes such as the elimination of a pistol grip and a flash suppressor, which critics say are more cosmetic than functional.
He used that weapon on Friday at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, where he shot other doctors that he had worked with.
Say again? He bought a weapon in compliance with NY's SAFE Act and and...?
Gun owners have challenged the constitutionality of the law in court, but at the same time, people who want stricter laws are concerned about loopholes that could easily be exploited.
For instance, gun dealers are allowed to receive shipments of assault rifles that are banned under the SAFE Act so they can sell them to law enforcement or sell them outside New York.
It is also legal for these dealers, who have both a federal firearms license and a New York State license, to modify the weapons to make them comply with state law.
...
The law was also aimed at decreasing the damage a gunman could do by limiting the size of a clip to 10 rounds.
Dr. Bello, however, carried three of them, the official said. So, as a practical matter, Dr. Bello “had his 30 rounds,” the official said.
He only used one clip before killing himself, the official said.
So it is legal to comply with the law. Man, they need to close that loophole like, yesterday.
Just to light a candle of hope, do let me note that at times in the past the NY Times has noted that scary black guns known as assault weapons are overhyped as weapons of carnage and that the whole discussion tends to be about cosmetics rather than substance.

You see!! There is the problem. The CRIMINAL only used ONE CLIP. If NEW YORK would limit weapons to ZERO CLIPS, criminals would comply with the LAWS. FIFY, or FIFNY

Almost certainly the good doc used his tenth round on himself because he wanted to avoid violating the spirit of Gov Cuomo's ten round magazine limit.
Numerous studies by half witted prog voles indicate avoiding a probable technical firearms regulation conviction is an effective deterrent to suicidal mass murderers.

I was clearly informed no math would be involved. The better question is what was thus loon doing out on the streets?

Ig, the DEAD PERP prolly had an 11 round clip.
Like Spinal Tap. Eleven is MOAR!!
if TRUTH BE TROLLED, the PERP had no interest in any LAWS. He had 30 rounds FOR A REASON.
The fact that he could kill and wound and SUICIDE before anyone could STOP HIM, indicates that he could have reloaded to his hearts content, and in so doing would have complied with the 10 round per clip law!!! Or he could have bought his weapons elsewhere. What is missing in this saga, is that NO ONE ELSE was PERMITTED to DEFEND HIM/HERSELF. Why?? Because RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS do not carry in GUN FREE ZONES.

He's drinking a PBR yet has a safety pin in his nose. I'm thinking he's maybe had just one too many PBRs. :)

Emanuel Marcon wants to reduce the size of the legislature in France.
I have no idea how that would be done, but there doesn't seem to be any outrage at this proposal.

Miss Marple,
What a horror story; the entire electric system has been turned into "third world shithole" status thanks to the greens. Plus the politicized green dimwit they put in charge has no experience with power systems; what could go wrong? And chasing more unicorns by looking to BATTERY TECHNOLOGY to save them at some nebulous date in the future, like NEVER! This is what happens when you have an industry as highly regulated as utilities and a government hijacked by lunatics. We are well our way to something similar thanks to the embedded imbeciles still pushing green crap at the state and federal level unless they're rooted out. If civilization doesn't survive this nonsense I hope someone leaves a message for any interstellar entities saying "they had abundant energy sources that a worldwide mental disorder made go unused".

Very droll, T M--hilarious Iggy.
From last thread discussion on Justice Thomas: H nailed it in his dissent in Kelo IMO--the worst decision of the SCOTUS in my lifetime. Shows the importance of having a judge with some practical experience of the real lives of the poor.

According to a local coffee quiz, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on July 4.
Have fireworks displays been curtailed in other areas of the country? Shaker Heights used to have a good display until a flash mob of Zippy's imaginary sons put an end to it. I was pretty close to where the main action happened and it was dispersed by the cops pretty quickly, but there were a lot of young children around so families left quickly. Still I have to think that the local pols wanted an excuse to eliminate an expense that didn't benefit their cronies.

"Despite Strict Gun Law, Troubled Doctor Was Able to Buy Assault Rifle"
The "troubled doctor." The argument for gun control rests on a premise that some large percentage of citizens are too troubled to be trusted with a gun, therefore guns must be banned for the sake of public safety.
And doesn't it seem that public education, particularly in the inner cities, is geared towards turning out more troubled citizens? Changing the focus from hard sciences onto social justice is meant to create an army of enraged activists that nobody would trust with a gun.

Clarice,
I don't think representing terrorists would be enough for the Libtards. I believe he would have had to represent animals in an attempt to confer basic civil rights to them in order to satisfy the sick left. Chimps should be able to use whichever bathroom they choose. Who are we to say where a chimp should fling his poo?

I said he says things I wouldn't say or do, but I was glad he had a way around the news cycle determined to misrepresent the actual news.
She nodded. If people ask strangers out of the blue about this just because they appear capable of coherent thought, it's on a lot of peoples' minds and not in a way that aids cnn. Even in atlanta.

Some of the suburbs have pedaled back the activity.
Prog 'burbs have shifted to 5k runs and the like, just not cool to be too patriotic.
Yesterday I helped Mrs. Buckeye find a little, very old cemetery out in what used to be farm country. Only 30 or so markers and many are so old they are barely legible. Almost every one in that cemetery is one of her distant cousins or their spouses. Quite a few with birth dates in the 1700s.
Almost every male grave is marked with a military star. Revolutionary War and forward. Most recent was a LT. Col. who served in WWII. Flags had recently been placed at the graves.
Honoring those who created and preserved this country is what matters today.

First of all there is no such thing as an assault weapon; a scary leftist political name.
The limitations in state law that I know of are cosmetic, period. No pistol grip, no folding stock, no flash suppressor and no bayonet lug in most states having sales prohibitions. A stock that moves in and out to accommodate smaller statured people is not illegal, but the folding stock, making for more easily stored firearms, is. A large diameter heavy barrel AR-15 style, evil looking so called assault weapon, is legal in MD, but not the same firearm with a standard barrel. Also they have magazines not clips as with the M-1 or SKS; a common error in the media.
A Ruger Mini 14 Ranch fires the same round as the AR-15, takes the same magazines and looks like a Ruger 10-22 (a .22 cal rifle). But if the Ruger Mini 14 has a folding stock, it can't be purchased in MD.
According to an international investigator who testified at the MD legislature when I was there, Puerto Rico has more stringent gun laws since the 1950s than MD was proposing and actual automatic weapons abound. He said too many beaches available to land guns. I have said that if we just make firearms illegal they can be disguised as cocaine/heroin and brought into the US so the bad guys remain armed and dangerous.
