Garbiñe Muguruza Wins Wimbledon, Defeating Venus Williams
...
Williams, as she so often is, was gracious in defeat. “I know how hard you work, and I’m sure this means so much to you and your family,” she said to Muguruza during the trophy ceremony. “So well done today. Beautiful.”
Victory would have meant a great deal to Williams, as well. This was her 20th Wimbledon. She last won a singles title here in 2008, and three years later she announced that she had Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder.
The condition sapped her energy, forced her to alter her diet and curtail her training. But it did not curtail her desire to continue competing at the highest level even when she failed to advance past the fourth round in singles at any major tournament in 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014.
She endured deep frustrations and retirement questions but continued to maintain that she still had the talent and temperament to contend for the biggest titles.
This season, she is the only woman to have played in two Grand Slam singles finals, but she is still chasing another Grand Slam title.
Howdy!

Robin - I knew when I read that you probably were familiar with what's happened to 4-H. I'm no longer involved in that part of it so I was quite shocked and dismayed.
I can testify that at our little local camp this week, we will NOT be discussing any of that. Our kids will canoe, swim, have shaving cream battles, tie-dye t-shirts, make biscuits, ascend the climbing wall, zip down the zip line, and get very little sleep!

Miss M,
An easy trip on paper. All we do is sit here for 50 hours, then do the very fun and short 40 minute hop to Paris. I am with one of my very favorite co-pilots, a Tulane ME major, 1st generation Irish Immigrant, funny and opinionated Ant-Pope Che Catholic boy, and he is visiting his Irish Cousin and her hubby in London tonight. In Paris we only get a day but we are at the Montparnasse Hotel which is near The Falstaff, our fav bar in Paris bar nine, where we will be welcomed as long lost friends upon entrance. Then 24 hours later we do the 2 legged back they Stansted to my favorite current American layover, Indy. Where are we going for lunch😀

In K-12 it is called SEL standards, life skills, Competencies, or Positive Education. Same focus after school with a different name. An academic name is simply the context for the activity.

rse and Mom...
the " indoctrination" in education is mind-boggling. The report on Powerline last week, documenting the terror elementary school children (who by genetics via God are 'white'.. not environment of white racist' parents) the Adult teachers, administrators, isolated-bullied-demoted-chastised them..IF they were not properly following their teachings( Maoist, Marxist BS). I believe it was a suburb of Minneapolis.
It's all parallel to the leftist media Russia/Trump propaganda, pushed to excuse their rejected political views. Another example of " hear, believe, teach, promote--ONLY what *I* say--not what I do. Division of the "haves and the have nots" by class, race, religion always leads to chaos.
And why I believe my grandson's Autism Spectrum DX, was not a tragedy.
He had to adapt, learn life lessons and store "knowledge" differently. Yes, again --it's not a preferred choice one would want for their children to struggle amongst "normals"--but in Colin's case, he soared, excelled and never judged other's misunderstanding of his differences. He says.." I'm unique--I work well, alone"..my gift from God, he is 😇

I was home for 2 days in the interim. The previous trip was modified and extended on the road for 2 or 3 days, but I was still legal FAA Rules-wise to do this trip, and since it is with a very good buddy whom I like a ton and we had a planned 4 day layover in England, I was glad to go. But since stuff broke and we got rerouted I've just been posting about the interesting changes more than normal. So I'm legal, having fun, and I get a good break off after I get home from this trip. FWIW, If I wanted I could easily bid to sit at home on Reserve and almost never go to work, but I love my job and momma is happier to have me on the road than pulling couch duty month after month:)

Good afternoon! The retirement conversation is interesting, because hubby is almost officially retired from the business he started in 1979. His business was bought by 40 year olds (one who went to high school with the daughter) and let me tell you,the transition hasn't been easy. Thank goodness he has lots of projects here in the woods. The most recent project has been putting power and water in what we call the "rustic cabin." That has kept him busy while I recover from foot surgery. Now he wants to buy the lot next to our property. By the way,he has a beer fridge in the garage. We call it the "magic fridge." :)

On retirement: If you're the " like to stay busy" or enjoy (thrive) on the responsibility--camaraderie--of your chosen (hopefully) career.....Do NOT retire early...if physically, financially feasible.
Mr. glenda retired at 54...because he could. He's now a young, moderately healthy 71, bored --antsy "wished he hadn't" guy. About two years after he retired, " life happened" and we became responsible for our grandson, DX w Autism--and for the next 8 or so years, actively threw everything we could into providing the support, consistency, opportunities needed to assure he would thrive.
He helped start a school program called "Watchdogs" for middle schoolers to assist kids in need or struggling with bullying, no-Dad-at home to shape a firm dependable child of hope .
Then, he hunted, we traveled, he helped everyone fix things that needed fixing (not at home, I had to hire that out).
We've been "accessory grandparents" for about 5-6 years, and the boredom sometimes makes him wish he was busier, maybe -- and after a day of yard&spool maintenance--running errands with the grandson, walking 3 miles, "consulting" with friends/associates on hunting/lease management..he popped a "top"--asked "what's for supper?"...and forgot he retired "too early".

Should have gone to the Sox-Yankee game today. It's in extra innings and the sun is setting. 1-1 with a controversial decision on interference at 1st. Is there a better series of rivalries?
Drive by it all the time on 90 going to Wellesley. Wonder if anyone has hit one over the green monster onto the Turnpike?
BTW, half of Asia is in Harvard Square sizing up where junior is going to school with his 2400 perfect SAT score and daddy's guaranteed $65K a year tuition. No bats an eyelash. Better if she is a she.

Get it on Netflix, MM, but if you do you need to do the moves.

I bet I am one of the last people to have never seen "The Rocky Horror Picture Show."
Now is probably not the time to start.
I went to SF conventions and enjoyed the dancing in the aisles. In the meantime, I have found out who Susan Saranwrap really is and would rather not see her again.
btw I saw "Godzilla meets Bambi" at a midnight showing at a Chicago World Con. Today, I am not really awake at midnight.

Oh, I meant to mention I need to make a correction. There are 3 comic book stores in Harvard Square. Forgot Newbury Comics. Stopped in after dinner so Frederick could peruse. (natch). Damn good jazz CD selection. Some pretty rare for me. Used but sounded good.

Love the Jubal E(arly) touch at your link. A twofer: the Confederacy and "Firefly."

JiB, better to see the game at Fenway than to listen to the POS color dude on Fox Sports. Too much about him. Too much about Boston.

For Catholics, Raymond Arroyo has a quote from a message Pope Benedict sent to a friend's funeral.
At least I know we are not crazy.

So now we have Good Pope and Bad Pope as if it wasn't obvious to all?
Isn't that the same quote we saw before, Miss M?

Lived in Dallas in my younger years. 4 dudes in a house and as result we did 'cool things'.
There was a theater that showed only RHPS and Mommie Dearest.
We went to the Mommie Dearest screening on night and it was a blast.
I did almost lose an eye to a wire hanger though.
'No more wire hangers, ever!'
