Many conservative sites have taken note of the odd appearance of the Russian lawyer at a House hearing on June 14, days after her famous Trump Jr. meeting [link 1; McFaul link 2]. She is seen seated behind Michael McFaul, Obama's former Ambassador to Russia, who is describing and defending the arc of the Russian reset. So what is her tie to Team Obama and does it mean she was a lure sent to ensnare Team Trump?
Ahh, maybe, but probably not. Let me start on my own Russian novel. From the Times:
Natalia Veselnitskaya, Lawyer Who Met Trump Jr., Seen as Fearsome Moscow Insider
...
In recent years, she [Ms. V] had become the public face of Moscow’s efforts to reverse international travel and financial sanctions on key Russian figures linked to an alleged $230 million tax fraud.
Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who exposed the fraud, was arrested by the same prosecutors who he suggested had organized it. He died in jail in 2009 amid accusations of beatings and medical malpractice.
In 2012 Mr. Browder, who had been Mr. Magnitsky’s boss, successfully campaigned for the United States Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act, a collection of sanctions naming Russian officials linked to Mr. Magnitsky’s death. An outraged Mr. Putin responded by banning Americans from adopting Russian children.
Ms. Veselnitskaya has also met with members of Congress and helped to establish a Delaware nonprofit group that lobbied against the sanctions. She submitted lengthy testimony and organized a screening of an anti-Magnitsky film at Newseum in Washington in June 2016, just days after she met with Donald Trump Jr.
She also attended a congressional committee hearing on American policy toward Russia a day after the screening, taking a front-row seat.
The Russian lawyer was here as part of a very controversial screening of an anti-Magnitsky film [NY Times, Guardian]. The film producer had done other films criticizing the Russian regime and thought this would be one more (i.e., pro-Magnitsky), but new evidence changed his mind. From the NY Times:
Mr. Nekrasov is an experienced documentary maker whose work has sometimes been critical of the Russian government. He made films about the Russian crackdown in Chechnya and the poisoning of Alexander V. Litvinenko, a former intelligence officer.
Speaking from Berlin, Mr. Nekrasov said he had not begun the project intending to undermine the account of Mr. Magnitsky’s death. He said that he viewed it more as a docudrama about Mr. Magnitsky’s last days, and that he had consulted Mr. Browder, whom he envisioned as the film’s narrator. But as he began scrutinizing original documents in the case, Mr. Nekrasov said, he began to doubt Mr. Browder’s version of events.
“It’s difficult to pin down the moment when I thought it was a lie, it’s a made-up story,” he said. One clue, he said, was that “there was no sign of whistle-blowing” on the part of Mr. Magnitsky.
He changed his mind after "scrutinizing original documents". That could describe the sort of prosecutor's files being lugged around by Ms. V, who had to have the American premier of the film uppermost in her mind.
So, my theory: The Russian lawyer has the "crown prosecutor" files that changed the director's mind about Magnitsky. She wants to show them to any influential politico who might listen.
Goldstone, a music promoter and tabloid journalist, knows that introducing her as the woman with a box full of dusty police files will be a snooze. But no problem! He re-brands her as the woman with a box full of files proving Hillary and Obama were dupes, fools and frauds when they supported the Magnitsky Act in 2012. And maybe some Hillary or Obama donor was somehow involved with the Magnitsky legislation or activity in Russia so there was a campaign finance angle to market. Snooze.
DJT Jr.'s "I love it" response reflects his long association with Goldstone, who he knows to be an effervescent promoter (i.e., normally fully of hot air and BS). In their relationship "I love it" was understood as "Not as absurd as your usual, you get ten minutes". C'mon, Hollywood producers, real estate developers and music promoters all speak mogul-ese, where nothing is ever just more of the same. For examples just listen to our current President - whatever is on his mind is the BESTEST EVER! Or the worstest, but certainly an outlier demanding YOUR ATTENTION NOW! "Good", "Bad" and "OK" are not for winners.
So - if this line of speculation is correct there was not, behind these emails, a serious Russian government attempt to undermine the Hillary campaign, other than as it related to her support of the Magnitsky Act. So that is good news for Team Trump.
As to the bad news, however hyperbolic DJT Jr.'s "I love it" response may have been, it looks dreadful in hindsight.
But there won't be indictments this weekend.
JUSTONEMINUTE AT THE MOVIES: I am betting that a whiff of Ms. V's files can be drawn from the movie, possibly available on YouTube. A good character-building opportunity for someone!
Re the film, The Nation denounced what the author described as "privatization of US foreign policy" by an aggrieved hedge fund manager. A Magnitsky colleague denounces the film as phony.
MORE: The Hill has more on Ms. V.
STILL MORE: The Hill talks with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican who was offered dirt on Magnitsky in April 2016. The Russians were peddling this to anyone with ears, one might conclude.
Just re-stating the idea from the last post. Maybe shorter is sweeter.

MM,
I am definitely no computer expert, but just as an FYI, the longer you have your computer on and running the more cluttered its memory gets until at some point you can get a warning your "virtual memory is too low" and your computer will effectively not work.
Turning it off [and letting it stay off] sets everything back to zero and clears out the memory from whatever open programs you had.

Ignatz,
That is a good suggestion because I tend to log off of the iternet but still leave the computer on.
I will try your suggestion which seems like something I should do.

I had stumbled into the comment section one early morning and posted that before. I'm still trying to find the collusion. The timeline would be the meeting was in the interregnum between the primary and general campaigns, planning for the convention (later in July), and a staff shake up. Foer was peddling the Russian stooge narrative as early as July (about the time Comey tried his Lieberman Pivot for Clinton).
What a shitty and confusing story.
Clinton Gore '96 got bags of cash delivered to the White House-literally-from Chinese agents and the worse that happened was the Thompson Commission. It didn't even rise to the level of Misdemeanor when the house reps put on their show.

Buddy Hackett's plan was to alienate DJT Jr?
If he and Jr's long relationship did not impress upon him that Trumps a)know the difference between silk purses and sow's ears and b)Trumps hold grudges better than Sicilians, then I guess bait&switch might seem prudent.
My bet is that if Buddy was the deceitful member of this transaction it was due to Perestroika having some kiddie porn tapes of him.

"virtual memory is too low" and your computer will effectively not work.
Sorry, this just is not right.
A computer has a limited amount of main memory, RAM. Most computers have at least 4 GB these days, though the amount is going up.
If the programs you are running require memory in excess of your RAM -- say you have two dozen chrome tabs open that require 8 GB of RAM -- the operating system writes a portion of the RAM contents to disk, and uses the RAM for the program (or tab) that you requested.
This is virtual memory -- you expand the amount of RAM you have by swapping contents to disk as required. Disks are so large these days that it virtually is impossible to run out of virtual memory.
Now this swapping from memory to disk and back is slow, as disks are very slow in comparison with RAM. So the computer becomes sluggish, and for some it may seem unusable. But that is only because disks are slow.
The solution? Close some programs (or tabs), or expand the computer's RAM. A solid-state drive (or SSD) helps a lot too, if you page (swap to disk) a lot.
Posted by: DrJ | July 12, 2017 at 12:38 PM
Effectively not working should not be confused with sluggish.
Q:Was the government worker, leaning on the broom, effectively not working?
A:No, he was merely sluggish.
Posted by: Threadkiller | July 12, 2017 at 12:49 PM
"The solution? Close some programs"
Many programs maintain some quick reload presence in the OS even after they've been "closed".
Periodic shut down may result in less crash vulnerability.

If anyone's been following, the anonymous WH insider has been popping up now and again on 4chan/pol/.
Claiming that a whole bunch of happening is going to start on July 27. The concept is the "slingshot" theory or effect (?) and there are hints of a ramp-up in aggressive prosecution of Obama admin malfeasance.
It's 4chan, so take with large grain of salt BUT previous anon post accurately predicted the announcement of the Lynch investigation.
Wray should be confirmed soon, so....?

Well I have a feel good story.
I drove about an hour this morning to get my yearly vehicle check-up. Oil change, check the fluids, and whatever else they do including car wash and inside cleaning. I was told it could take 4 hours. 2 hours later the guy said I was finished and I went into his office to sign some docs. And he said; "You are all set." I said: "Where's the bill?". His reply "I took care of it." Me: "Where do I pay?". Him: "I took care of it".
No charge. I am grateful and clueless.

My knee-jerk is to distrust this guy Wray since he says he knows how wonderful Mueller is and continually reiterates that. He strikes me as another guy on the bandwagon. I suppose thats what he has to say to get confirmed what with this pack of Senatorial weasels playing Judge and Jury.
Oh well, he will be confirmed so we will find out in the long run if he is intent on draining the swamp, or filling the swamp.

Thank you Jane. He certainly is appealing to the Anti-Trump Senators and will win their vote for Confirmation. I suppose he has to do that.
I like Grassley this instant, citing Comey's bizarre answers in previous testimony, asking if it is inappropriate for the FBI Director to give info to the Media and to FOIA guys, but to refuse to give to the Senate that very same info when the Senate has specifically demanded it. Comey said he could't tell the Senate why he did that. So Grassley asks Wray what he thinks about that.
This questions strikes me as the first question I have heard that presses Wray as a real question a Conservative would like to hear answered firmly by Wray, but instead of replying firmly, that it is outrageous etc, he replies "It strikes me as odd." Sounds like a very swampy answer.
Regardless, he will be confirmed.

Not all of us are running brand new gigantor disks.
And when I try closing programs the thing is so slow and useless doing so, it's easier to just reboot and start over.

Just an observation. I consider this Hearing as valuable in revealing the collective mob mindset of the "Witch Hunters."
From listening to all the questions so far it appears to me that the Senate does not have any facts proving any illegality committed by Trump and/or members of his Administration, but they have more than enough collective outrage and collective shared beliefs in imagined illegal acts sufficient to proceed to Impeachment.

Posted by: Ralph L | July 12, 2017 at 02:23 PM
Henry,
We were supposed to fly to Indianapolis and then on for a 4 day layover in Cambridge England. Instead we were advised while in the cockpit on the ramp cranking up, that we were modified and going to Memphis. So we did, then discovered that due to some huge St Jude's Hospital Social hoopla in Memphis, that all the Hotel Rooms in the city were sold out, so calling around the nearest they could find were 2 individual rooms in 2 different hotels in Southaven Mississippi, so I hopped in one cab cab, my co-pilot in another cab, and they drove both of us clean out of the state of Tennessee and dropped me off in a Holiday Inn in Southaven, him in another Hotel not too far off. I was able to stop and pick up a 6-pack since in whichever state we were in the gas station was legal to sell cold ones till 3 AM and I was just under the wire. Yeungling.
Anyhow, at the Holiday Inn, the one remaining room was a "Handicapped" room, so I have convenient monkey bars around my toilet! Now we are told we are scheduled to deadhead to Heathrow via Newark tomorrow, but it's subject to change:)

You should send that suggestion to the White House! Nothing I would like to see more than the look on April Ryan's face when THAT was announced!

It isn't clear to me that Comey shared all the memos with his friend.

I would guess Jane was wearing flip-flops with painted toes.

I never pay for oil changes. I also never have a
long wait time. My secret, homemade cookies
or muffins. It's worked for 20 years.

Oh, Threadkiller....
Now, here is a question I have. Who is behind Harvey Weinstein suddenly deciding he wants to do a talk show?
Posted by: Miss Marple the Deplorable | July 12, 2017 at 04:41 PM
From the 'This could be something, or nothing at all' file:
When I swipe my phone's home screen to the right to check my info, there's a four item news feed. It's fair and balanced, too - of the fifty or so articles I see headlined per week, at least two or three are from Fox or WSJ...
Anyhoo, it's been all Russia, all the time the last few weeks with very few exceptions. But of the sixteen headlines I've seen today, only one has mentioned Russia. Just one. I'm not claiming that it's over, but there is a definite and coordinated change in coverage.

Aha! A clue!

Looks like Weinstein is mounting an anti-Trump effort.
Tamara Hall was a oppular host with Today and famously walked away when they gave her 3rd hour to Kelly.
I imagine she is also anti-Trump, so this will be a new venue for attacks via Hollywood and DC.
Meanwhile, why hasn't Michael Moore had a coronary event yet?

Muh lawyer got tied back to Dems way too fast. Back to the drawing board for the narrative.

not sure i agree with TM that "i love it" looks "dreadful" in hindsight.

That Rand Paul thing I posted at 3:40 really depresses me. Remember when the House was passing O'care Lite and Mark Meadows and others screamed bloody murder, only to be told to just chill because the Senate would do it right then the Conference Report version would be MAGA perfect?
We are screwed. We will have single payer in the blink of an eye.
femall.

I've noticed that ladies are always telling me how they got off with a "warning" when they were stopped for speeding or minor traffic violations. I've gotten a ticket every time (not that it's been so many--maybe 3 or 4 over 40 years).

thanks for that Cernovich vid, Clarice.
does anyone have a link to comments from Rob Goldstone since this thing broke? i think Hannity referred to some but haven't seen any.

This one upsets me too:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/12/judge-rules-courts-can-stop-trump-deportations/
If Congress had balls, they would put these courts in their place, because the Constitution allows them to.
Femall too.
I'm going to go check the supplies on the Ledge.

Churchill: "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?"
Socialite: "My goodness, Mr. Churchill… Well, I suppose… we would have to discuss terms, of course…"
Churchill: "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?"
Socialite: "Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!"
Churchill: "Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price."

OL, step by step. Our job is to persist.
Posted by: sbwaters | July 12, 2017 at 05:12 PM
Obamacare and its various GOPe 'lite' incarnations are basically another way for the Deep State to guarantee itself lifetime employment and high income. Campaign contributions in return exemptions and other indulgences, lobbying for one interest group or another--it's all just another division of the world's largest extortion racket. Why wouldn't they want to keep that going? It's not as though they have principles.
Posted by: jimmyk | July 12, 2017 at 05:15 PM
SBW, maybe we'd be better occupied building guillotines and tumbrels.
Posted by: James D. | July 12, 2017 at 05:19 PM
I know, SBW...but step by step if Obamacare is a guide, they are winning ground we will never retake. Think SS.
Our job was to persist until R's got the House. Our job was to persist until R's got the Senate. Our job was to persist until we got the WH and kept the first two.
What our persistence seems to have gotten us is nationalized medicine that is but one small calamity from becoming full socialist single payer.
It is hard to see how pulling O'care out by the roots was not the single most shouted rallying cry for almost eight years. Losing on that one by our own hands means little will happen on any of the other MAGA agenda items either.
