Here we go again.
Let me sound forth the trumpet that has previously blown retreat - this is from 2010, reprised in 2011.
My official editorial position is that if we had Lincoln in the White House, the Afghani equivalent of George Washington in Kabul, and Generals Marshall and Eisenhower peering at maps of Kandahar, we might still lose in Afghanistan. Gen. Petraeus is a great general and a great American, but he is not partnered with Lincoln and Washington.
Not sure I wanna be first...

It is not a shameful thing to admit the truth that Afghanistan is not a winnable war.
The country is too shattered and backwards to stand on its own for decades at least.
With Iran and Pakistan on its borders there is no way to stop the enemy from fading into the scenery and waiting.
It has been unconquerable forever. Even those willing to destroy it utterly just get absorbed by it.
For what?
We have no sane strategy in the ME outside of Israel and maybe Egypt and haven't for decades.

The plan is simple: Declare Afghanistan the 51st state. Next, erect The Jefferson Davis Memorial Monument and Theme park. Wait for the protesters to arrive, then bomb the shit out of it. Lastly, grant Afghanistan independence and remove all troops, while scuttling every runway, road and power plant on the way out.

That was Obama's rules of engagement. They had to run it by JAG so by the time they got permission to attack, the terrorist had either escaped or blown something up.

He was ORDERED not to take the shot, because ROE. So, as he drove his lead vehicle into the village, a round hit his bullet proof driver's side window.

But it remains unwinnable. Sorry.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | August 21, 2017 at 10:20 PM
You better be ready to swallow it, maryrose, because with history as a guide nothing will happen; or if it does it will be a slap on the wrist for some small timers and that's where it will end. I don't even think they'll toss DWS under the bus even though she's painfully obviously guilty of some really really bad things judging from what a fool she made of herself threatening a cop in a public meeting to get a laptop back.
I'd be ecstatic to be wrong about this but past disappointments dictate otherwise.

It's possible the indictment was just a place holder and in the meantime c/i is uncovering the extent of the Awan espionage and Wasserman's role in it.
As for Pakistan it sends a message to its ally, Russia. India's assistance is critical and it sends a message to China. It's the great game, not the poseur game the Clintons and Obama have been playing for years.

I've used Opera for well over 20 yrs. made the transition to Mac over 10 yrs ago. Keep about 100 tabs open at any one time. The rare times I have to reboot my Mac, it comes right back without a hiccup. The real value on a daily use basis is never having to touch a mouse. Tabs left/right = 1/2 keys, forward/backward = x/z keys. One button click brings the tab list into view because the tabs are tiny when you have that many. Most of the cool features other browsers adopt often come from Opera.
I've never heard whether the Norskies were just bought out, or just received fresh backing from the Chinese. The process had happened numerous times with aircraft companies, particularly when they hit financial difficulties.

Posted by: Captain Hate | August 22, 2017 at 06:51 AM
Thanks cboldt. That transcript reads like the #NeverTrump traveling road show. Disgraceful all around.
Posted by: henry | August 22, 2017 at 06:55 AM
I didn't know the Ryan and Feingold families were close. That explains plenty. Second and third questions to Ryan were on Charlottesville (and Tapper repeated the lie that Trump said there were good people at "the march" which happened the night before), with the third question coming from an old family friend of Ryan, Dena Feingold. Tapper arranged the fourth and fifth questions to be on the same subject, with the fifth being more about bullying in general than on being a racist bigot.
Posted by: cboldt | August 22, 2017 at 06:59 AM
That transcript reads like a total setup. Asshole Tapper was doing more questioning than the plants did. Hard to believe that what happened in Charlottesville is real high on the list of important things in Racine.
You were set up like a damn fool, Ryan.
