Democracy dies in DC.

Robin Wright, who got Lebanon wrong, from the beginning, and Tom Ricks who missed the surge the first time around, in his chronicle of woe with Iraq, as wilder's willy wonka gif says 'tell me more'

He was also the one who introduced broadwell for Petraeus, his tome on orwell and Churchill is adequate I suppose,

I don't know if you saw my post on the past thread, but I didn't want you to miss the list of names:

60% chance of a coming civil war seems low to me. The left, and their identity politics, all but assures a hot civil war.

Heading to the range and continuing to stock up.

Good afternoon! I started thinking about Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. I did bit of research and there are 12 Confederates in Statuary Hall. Uh Oh! Try to imagine Ryan,McConnell and the usual suspects standing up to the pressure of removing those statues. We should set up a pool. How long before those statues are gone? I'll say six months.

The left even set the date for their tantrum / power through violence putsch: it is Nov on the anniversary of Trump's electoral victory. They even announced it.

Marlene, the statues will be gone long before ACA is repealed, taxes are reformed, infrastructure is rebuilt, or a regular budget process is filed.

I think closer to 6 weeks than 6 months.

"lest you doubt his science" unnamed expert was cited as some other dude in his informal poll.

This makes his argument somehow "science"? Its opinion by a loser with an axe to grind blamed on some neer do well who remains anonymous. Methinks Douthat knows as much science as your average cow patty.

Yes henry,you're probably right. *sigh*

Where is everybody? Watching Elvis movies on TCM?

It seems Charlottesville was the kickoff event for the Purple Revolution. We have to do whatever Barney (or a dinosaur sized purple haired creature of many genders to be named later) tells us to.

This may be a planned attack on Trump leading to the Nov revoke the vote spasm. They have no more narratives to try. They are that desperate.

I deplore how the moderate neo-nazis are being lumped in with the violent extremists committing acts of nihilistic mayhem. Sure the moderate neo-nazis say and believe some quaint notions inconsistent with reality and history ... but certainly most do not approve the ugly disorder, random carnage, and the resulting disgrace directed towards them. The violent extremists are probably not even true neo-nazis.

The worst thing that could result from the unfortunate recent events would he a hostile backlash that targets moderate neo-nazis, which surely many now live in fear expecting discrimination and rancor.

Codevilla came up with "cold civil war" back in April. I can't think of a better term for it....so far.

As MoodyBlu points out, we could get to "hot" pretty quickly.

Porch, the Purple Revolution link (T_D / pol) suggests getting hot soon is the left's plan. They will at least be in Full Madison mode nationwide by November. Likely with bats and possibly guns.

The black dude, with the flaming aerosol can, in Charlottesville....was he a NAZI?

It will be a hot civil war if the Left wants it to be--and I'm beginning to think they do. Maybe they are being used by Putin; certainly they are being funded by Soros. Whoever and whatever is behind it is immaterial. The MSM/Democrat Party seem to have become convinced in their ignorant minds that out of the chaos they will be able to impose their dream of a totalitarian state ruled by the "liberal elites" --of which they all seem to number themselves.

And we may indeed end up with a totalitarian state. But today's liberal elites won't be the ones in charge. Since you can't rule from the grave.

derwill, yet another adorable, irredeemable deplorable

Can someone please provide the Purple Revolution link again. Somehow I missed it.

henry, that will backfire immensely. I think the relatively sane Dems will pull back the dogs before then. If they can.

The fact they are pouring on the gasoline now (as the Russia narrative dies) does make one wonder how close Trump is to blowing some really deep, deep secrets wide open.

The assault on the middle class, American dream, is peaking, ne'ces pas?

The progressive, Marxist fundamental change of America, came to a screeching halt when Trump defeated their "token" place-holder, CurbDive.

Since Jan. 20, 2017..the insidious feint's of honor---democrat, socialists, quasi-communists that created the racial, class, religious divides--all to maintain control of their sourceblood (American tax $$--creativity--accountable citizenry)..they lied, denied, deceived, manipulated, obstructed any change Trump promised: free fair trade, strong borders and immigration policies, education choice, smaller government, reliable intelligence, restoring our military might-resolve-veteran care...Why? Fear, and greed.

Only cowards use labels to enhance and spread bigotry, crescendo in VA, but occurring in democrat strongholds like Berkeley, DC, Chicago---masked mobs threatening, inciting evil and hate BECAUSE THEY LOST control of the US bureaucracy! Their policies, ideals were never going to win another election. So they organized violence, blackmailed businesses co-operating, just like they pretended Russia and Trump colluded.

Convenient Obama announced he's going to "get out there campaigning", his associates now belong to the alt-right White boogie man groups, the compliant abuser of power, MacAuliffe has his script-readied "Trump is a racist" stand down police enablers---and the media alerted to sustain the lie..Nafta renegotiated starting--Hollywood immorals prime-timed attacks..and as expected--the RINO's the public rejected and do not trust..all stabbing We the people in the throat, again----because their donors own them. The donors want tax bailouts, single payer HC, more illegal immigrants, political prosecutions, defense lobbyist sponsored War here-or-there...and lots and lots of baby parts to make more $$$ off,..and don't forget the climate fraudsters and the entertainment pedophiles---they pay those politicians a lot for their safe-spacing special labels!!!
No No No No!!!!!!!!!
Stop hurting our country. Our citizens. Our veterans. Our children's education, our safety or just the decency to respect our choices to improve our lives, without hurting or insulting other' s!!!!
Never Again, people....NEVER again, rewrite the honor of history, or forget hope demands faith in each other!

I'm not going to speculate on whether this idea of a Purple Revolution on Nov 8th is real or not, but I do find it amusing--as in how could anyone possibly think that would work?

If given the order, a single company of Mad Dog Mattis' Marines could wipe out the entire Antifa "army" in twenty minutes. And don't think Mattis wouldn't give the order if some ginned up mob attempted to remove our duly elected president by force.

That would not surprise me, since the first round of destabilization of the campuses and the streets was funded by the KGB back in the 1960's.

Vladimir Putin was a beginning KGB agent and must have viewed that as one of their successes.

Food for thought.

The TNT series leans strongly on this tripe.

You look at objectively what Obama has done and what trump has at least tried to reverse.

derwill, two of my great grandfathers fought on different sides in the Civil War. One, from NW Georgia, was in the 51st Inf.("Ragged Ass GA"). My GA and Polk Co TN families had men on both sides. The other great grandfather, from West PA, served in the 134 Regt.PA Inf. After the war, their families met in Texas.
It's strange how much was done to heal the country then and what is being done now to create wounds.

Moreover I have one word for anyone who thinks it really matters too much; Afghanistan.
If the military sided with the state against the people it would vastly increase the casualties but it wouldn't alter the outcome.

Remember Sherman caught his mortal pneumonia because he refused to wear a hat at the funeral of a civil war general because he viewed it as disrespectful.

I thought the Purple Revolution was Prince's band.

The military will support the Constitution, however it may be threatened. Maybe there is a replay of 1861, but I doubt it.

This is what the antifa wants. To show the Trump is willing to call out the Army to prevent civil disorder. It melds with the their propaganda about fascism.

The raising of the statues issue is pure incitement and they knew that. What amazes me is how the spineless political class has simply folded.

Frau Unruhe im Friedhof

Appalled - I didn't ignore your question which I found later. The Hollywood cemetery is a *private* one where many famous celebrities are buried. If any members of the GAR families wished to have a special monument, they could have done so. There is even a monument to the dog that was "Toto" in the Wizard of Oz. It's Hollywood!

Does "equality in cemetery monuments" play into your question?

So while the president blathers about how some of the torchbearers were fine people,

The actual exchange -

"Trump: [Inaudible.] You have some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group β€” excuse me, excuse me β€” I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.

Reporter: Do you support white nationalists, then?

[Cross talk. Reporters shout questions.]

Trump: Well, George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So, will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down- Excuse me. Are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him?

Reporter: I do love Thomas Jefferson-

Trump: OK, good. Well, are we going to take down the statue? Because he was a major slave owner. Now, are we going to take down his statue? So, you know what? It's fine. You're changing history. You're changing culture and you had people, and I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists because they should be condemned, totally. But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists, OK? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats. You got a lot of bad people in the other group, too.

Reporter: Who was treated unfairly? Sir, I'm sorry I don't understand what you were saying. You were saying the press has treated white nationalists unfairly? I just don't understand what you were saying.

Trump: No. No. There were people in that rally β€” and I looked the night before. If you look, there were people protesting very quietly the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee. I'm sure in that group there were some bad ones. The following day it looked like they had some rough, bad people: neo-Nazis, white nationalists, whatever you want to call them. But you had a lot of people in that group that were there to innocently protest β€” and very legally protest, because you know- I don't know if you know, they had a permit. The other group didn't have a permit. So, I only tell you this. There are two sides to a story. I thought what took place was a horrible moment for our country, a horrible moment. But there are two sides to the country. Does anybody have a final- does anybody- you have an infrastructure question."

It's the reporter that was pushing the white nationalist bit.

derwill, yet another adorable, irredeemable deplorable

I'm going to say this again, because I think it bears repeating. This is not about the statues. If the statues didn't exist, or if they tore down the statues and the country as a whole had shrugged their shoulders and yawned, they would have had to find something else to foment the hate. It's what the Left does; it's what they've always done.

They aren't going to stop. Every vestige of the Confederacy can be wiped out from the country's consciousness and they will just move on to something else. They have decided, and probably rightly so, that if Trump is allowed to proceed with his agenda, they will have not just lost a battle but the war. If Trump is allowed to succeed it would put the lie to everything they espouse, everything they believe in, and that simply cannot happen. And not only does he have to be destroyed but everyone who voted for him has to be neutralized. They will settle for cowed and silenced, but if necessary they'll move on to a final solution. It's what they do.

In the end everyone, even the Appalleds, are going to be forced BY THE LEFT to chose a side.

Part of it rings true, the lefts focus on identity politics has proven selflimiting, the otherpart does and why would you give the tome of day to Robert kuttner?

I lived in West Berlin in 1967 and 1968. My son was born there. Got to see Communism up close and personal.

When I came home, I worked for a few years and then went back to school. This would have been 1971. The IU Indianapolis campus didn't have any large scale demonstrations because most of the students were commuter students. The demonstrations for me were a background noise on TV. At that time I was still a democrat.

I watched every second of the Watergate hearings. I had never been a fan of Nixon so I was concerned more with proving him wrong, an attitude I regret now that I am older.

However, I noticed that when in the college union and the talk turned to the evils of the military, I had to remind people that a lot of people were serving through no fault of their own. I didn't like hearing my husband and friends trashed.

Indianapolis was not much of a place for demonstrations. The colleges here are either commuter or residential church based schools which at that time had strict enforcement of behavior codes. We didn't even have race riots after MLK and RFK were killed.

Frau, the other side of my family immigrated (legally) from Prussia because they had 11 boys and the Prussian government had instituted mandatory conscription in the army. They landed in New Orleans in 1860 just in time for the Civil War. Luckily for them and their 11 sons, New Orleans was occupied early in the war by the Union Army so none of them had to fight for either side in a conflict they knew nothing about.

By the time my generation came on the scene in the 1950s, the family considered themselves Southerners through and through. They never displayed Confederate flags as far as I know, but I did on occasion growing up hear the phrase DamnYankee pass their lips. But, interestingly, never the N-word.

Today there are three racially mixed marriages in the family (it's a big one) and all but myself and a couple of cousins still live in NO. The very worse thing Obama did, IMO, was tear back open the racial wounds that had finally started to heal in this country.

I wouldn't spend much time on the regret; even with giving him bonus points on having total lowlifes as opponents, Nixon screwed us all on a lot of things. And stating that the EPA would've happened under Carter doesn't take him off the hook.

What upsets me about it is how easily I was manipulated. In those days, I actually believed that Woodward and Bernstein were heroes and that the dems were acting virtuously.

I honestly thought I was well-informed by listening to Walter Cronkite and reading the paper and Time Magazine.

It wasn't until "We Were Soldiers" came out that I discovered that we had WON the Tet offensive! I am not the only one. My best friend Jan, who is 4 years younger than I, didn't know it either!

My brother-in-law, who turned 80 this year, was a Marine Lieutenant in Vietnam. He doesn't talk much about it, but when he got out he didn't come home. He had seen how things were here so he went to work as a bouncer at a big name bar in Sydney, Australia. He lived there for many years before coming home.

This is a name that will mean nothing to you until you know they are tied to the state depts of ed in everyone's state.

Here is their charlottesville statement.

"Dear World Savvy Community,

The horrific events of the past week have shaken our community, as we all are reminded again of the deep divisions across this country, and the enormous need to heal those divides and create a society in which all individuals are equally protected and allowed to thrive in our democracy. White supremacists, neo-Nazis and xenophobes marched on Charlottesville, VA without mask or hood, unafraid and unashamed, leaving destruction and death in their wake. To us and our community it is unambiguous: there is no equivalence in this matter between hate-filled protesters with Nazi salutes and propaganda, and the counter-protesters who bravely advocated for equality and humanity. The former threatens the very core of democratic society, the latter upholds it.

We understand, too, that these are not isolated incidents, but symptoms of a much deeper, more systemic challenge: the institutionalized racism, xenophobia and white privilege that has created inequity and wrought structural and physical violence since our country's founding. We know the practical, every day ramifications of this. That those people who marched proudly will return to their jobs and civic roles in communities across the country: on juries, as doctors or nurses, hospice care, teachers, law enforcement officials and government employees, and too many more professions and capacities to name. We know that the bias and hate manifest in their actions shows up in those 'everyday' roles- impacting the lives of Americans in real, practical ways. The systemic ways in which this manifests are profound and far-reaching - in our criminal justice system, housing, health care, and in education, to name just a few.

Coming together to dismantle that system of hate and oppression has to be our highest priority as citizens. World Savvy is, has always been, and will remain deeply committed to this effort, to ensure students, educators, schools and districts across the country can do the important work needed in the coming weeks, months and years. We believe that building global competence, and greater capacity for empathy, perspective taking, critical thinking and collaboration across difference are critical steps in the direction we need to travel, together.

As a part of our community, we encourage your feedback and involvement- about how we can do more, help in different ways, and double down on our efforts in the coming year. Here is a resource from the Southern Poverty Law Center we believe begin to address how we can collectively be part of the solution - and we welcome more from you. Please share these within your networks, and if you have others to offer to our community, please share those with us directly.

Thank you for being a part of the World Savvy community - one that believes in a future that is inclusive, equitable and just for all people. World Savvy's work IS this work - this is our mission: to tackle this head on and work together toward a new reality. Everything we do ties back to this burning imperative. We are proud to do this work in partnership with you, and will work tirelessly to fullfill our mission to educate and engage youth to be responsible global citizens, prepared to thrive in a more diverse and interconnected world."

And yet that was only a tiny part of the iceberg thar0t was going on at the time, Cox's minions were mire like ravagers than white knights as clarice found out, and Woodward and bernstein were were only reporting what felt chose to leak from thevgrand jury.
