I probably ought to have an informed opinion about the 'women in tech' debacle at Google. OK, let me man up and get going! Wait, cowboy up? Hero up!
Here is some coverage of the kick-off, a ten page manifesto diatribe screed memo from an aggrieved Google engineer.
A Business Insider summary opens with this:
The internet giant Google has fired the male engineer at the center of an uproar in Silicon Valley over the past week after he authored an internal memo asserting there are biological causes behind gender inequality in the tech industry.
Here's a thoughtful rebuttal from a recently departed senior Google exec.
Since everything old is new again let's flash back to 2005 when Larry Summers, then President of Harvard, touched this third rail with remarks on women in science:
He offered three possible explanations, in declining order of importance, for the small number of women in high-level positions in science and engineering. The first was the reluctance or inability of women who have children to work 80-hour weeks.
The second point was that fewer girls than boys have top scores on science and math tests in late high school years. “I said no one really understands why this is, and itʹs an area of ferment in social science,” Summers said in an interview Saturday. “Research in behavioral genetics is showing that things people previously attributed to socialization werenʹt” due to socialization after all.
As an aside, women drawing on their verbal skills or guys with their flair for math may have noticed that although promised three points we only see two. Many paragraphs later the writer reaches third base - outright discrimination, which economists argue create a market opportunity for the open-minded.
As to science and math test scores, here is a follow-up Economist article from 2012. I am missing a great link to the XX / XY hypothesis, which argues that men have more genetic quirkiness due to their XY nature [Wikipedia on the controversial theory; Psychology Today with brain scans]. As a consequence men are over-represented at both ends of every bell curve - more geniuses, more developmentally disabled, more incredible musicians, more tone-deaf troglodytes, more writers with an incredible flair for illustrative examples, more drones who compare bricks to other bricks, more guys with an incredible sense of smell, more guys with no nose at all (including yours truly; storytime later, but I was once sprayed by a skunk and didn't know it)... OK, we all get it.
That said, let's accept that maybe a target of 50% women in a 'genius' department defies the natural ratio found in society at large. That doesn't mean that there aren't also real sources of discrimination. Nor does it follow that a person making that point is saying that women can't do that job; their point would be that the number of women qualified to do that job might be fewer than the number of similarly qualified men.
My very short take is that this is Larry Summers all over again and that the Fired Guy has some valid points expressed in a politically unacceptable manner. Naturally, this means he is easily caricatured and dismissed. Righties who have spent time debating, ohh, many things (Immigration reform? "Muslim" ban? Transgender bathrooms?) and been told to 'stop hating you hater' know how this works. [The Washington Free Beacon covers CNN's version of this approach.]
I also suspect that Google's diversity program, in the manner of most human endeavor, has some ludicrous rough edges and unfortunate results.
MORE: Hmm. Per Ace, Fired Guy may have a defensible legal position:
Damore might have more legal options than you'd guess -- he filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board before publishing his memo, and the NLRB protects people against firing once they've lodged a complaint...
The failing NY Times has more here and here, including a job offer for Fired Guy from alleged rapist Julian Assange. Those haters gotta stick together! (Sorry, trying to get ahead of the CNN/Maddow curve. Do not attempt this at home...)
I probably ought to have an informed opinion about the 'women in tech' debacle at Google.
Spoken like a woman:)

Just in time to bring forward Nassim Taleb---
Taleb can swing a mean frozen flounder. He demonstrates how it is done:
"Something is Broken in the UK Intellectual Sphere.
The UK political correctness mob. Britain perfected the scholar with “f*** you money”, but today’s typical U.K. academic is a wuss, with a renewable 5 year contract, and, like the middle class, in a state of insecurity and constant fear of being caught breaking rules. They are very vulnerable to the slightest accusation (recall the Tim Hunt affair where a Nobel winner was summarily fired because of a confusing joke, with no chance of explaining what he meant). So there is a set system to terrorize people who divert via public flogging or even burning at the stake: for instance David Colquhoun, a morally depraved man who serves as attack dog to terrorize people and raise mobs can only exist in the U.K. Like an inquisitor, he accuses you of sorcery and now all bets are off. He makes sure nobody reads your papers. He did it to Tim Hunt & others."
...and Taleb counts his blessings that he lives in the United States.
"We believe here in America in freedom of expression far more than in other fuzzier notions such as justice, equity, etc. Freedom is vastly more robust than other notions and shields us from inquisitors such as David Colquhoun. Europe and Canada are in trouble.
...
Lesson: All these intellectuals know is to either shut up or be part of a lynch mob."

When my children were small, I noticed that the boys tended to be nomadic, going from house to house on their bikes and often ending up miles from home.
The girls tended to go to one house or another and then stay put, playing house or school or making fairy gardens.
I realized this wasn't true of all girls (my daughter was willing to explore the woods with companions, although usually said companions were boys). (This was when she was 6-8.)
When I graduated from high school, I was going to major in journalism. I had struggled in math and barely made it through geometry.
When I re-entered college after dropping out and getting married, I started out in teaching but got lured into taking a geology class. I even discovered that somehow, the algebra that was so hard when I was 14 was somehow understandable when I was 25.
I ALSO discovered it was very hard to get women to take a science class. This was in the mid-70's. No matter how much I talked abuot financial advantages they weren't interested, because they might have to MOVE. They were not interested in leaving the city, for the most part, due to boyfriends or husbands.
I don't know how much of what I described was socialization or biology, but the fact is it existed.

That is precisely why smart businesspeople don't want to hire women. If the woman is pissed she should leave, start her own company and laugh at the guy.
The reason people don't want to hire woman or gays or blacks in not because of who they are, but what they might do if they fail.

I was going to read the 'manifesto' and. then noticed that then Gulag response was written by a woman who is the VP for Diversity, Integrity and Governance.
As an engineer, I am troubled that in a technology company you need a person in charge of INTEGRITY AND GOVERNANCE. I leave out diversity since it is a customary function of Human Resources (HR) and usual covers implementation of EEO/AA requirements.
I can understand having an INTEGRITY AND GOVERNANCE official for, lets say, the Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change, as an example. Too much phony or fake science and wild mathematical modeling plus a lack of credible management of those scientists and their inventions (stories).
No wonder these Gulag kids are sleeping in cars.
V.P. of Diversity, Integrity and Governance in the old Soviet Union was called a "political officer". I don't see much difference at Google.

It's interesting how the Law of Unintended Consequences manifests. "Protecting" certain classes from unscrupulous employers by making them much less appealing job candidates is on the same spectrum as, e.g., France "protecting" workers by making it impossible to fire them.
And yet the inevitable result is an enduring source of surprise for some observers.

McMaster is but the latest in the hair-on-fire, which-disturbing-Trump-cabinet-member-is-next-to-get-the-axe narratives. Bannon, Kushner, Sessions, etc. Occasionally even normally level-headed folks on the right get drawn in.

I've been an engineer, engineering manager, middle manager, etc., for several decades now. Worked for a major 3-letter tech company until I went elsewhere a few years ago. Believe me, I know all about AA for women in the tech world.
Ever since I joined that world, any woman who could even function has been promoted over men, given every unfair opportunity to rise through the ranks ahead of men, and still, to this day, only a few have been able to hack it at the upper levels.
Why? It's pretty clear to me that it's related to differences between the sexes.

At a quarterly divisional meeting last year they welcomed 23 new hires, 5 of which didn't have Indian names, and 2 of those 5 didn't have Chinese names. And yet it's an article of faith here that we have to pay attention to "Diversity" but it's fairly obvious that they really don't care about diversity.

I wonder how an investor might feel or wonder about the efficacy of investing in Alpahbet after reading the manifesto memo? It is obvious, now that I have read it, that Google strives to be a "cooperative" corporate culture versus a "competitive" corporate culture. Maybe its me but I want my team to be more competitive than cooperative.
Cooperative to me is a team who designs the camel out of the horses specifications and a competitive one is one who takes the horses specs and gives you Secretariat. This is another result of the feel good "diversity" mission of colleges and universities. Harvard's incoming freshman class as an example. I don't how long the social and behavioral tenets have infiltrated STEM but it is becoming more apparent when you read the SJW responses to the "manifesto" which I found as wishy-washy as the politicies and culture it was criticizing.
Think. Create. Build. Repeat.

lurkersusie,
Things are not always what they seem. I believe "witch hunt" referred mostly to the press.
Ignatz,
One thing I know is that McMaster was a decorated tank commander in Iraq. He is friends with both Mattis and Kelly. I left a rebuttal on part of this at the end of the previous thread.
Susan Rice was given clearance to access HER OWN product, not anything new. If she is going to be questioned on why she did something or didn't do something, she has to be able to read what she wrote, since obviously none of it is in her possession, as it is classified. This applies whether it is simply something McMaster has a question about or whether she has to testify before the intelligence committees. I do not understand why people don't understand this.
The two people who were "fired" were simply transferred back to their originating agencies except for the Ezra Cohen-whatever guy, who I am not sure even exists.
Finally, a lot of the agitation on this is coming from people who want us to intervene in Iran, and that includes a lot of people who are being funded by Iranian exiles and also people like Frank Gaffney, who has been on a tear about this since at least 2008.
Now, the President's position on this is we only are getting involved militarily when it is in the national interest. Iranian regime change is not necessarily in our national interest, loathsome though they are. What benefit would we derive from that? Until they can aanswer that question in a way that t can be explained better than the book did that Codevilla reviewed this morning , President Trump isn't going to be enthused about it.
Of what value is all of this carrying on about McMaster right now when we have a huge problem with North Korea? Who benefits from McMaster being fired?
I just am not willing to see foreign policy and military decisions made by bloggers and Twitter. I think it best to be cautious about making prremature decisions about people.
Besides, if I were wanting to do something to Iran one of the first things I would do was make it look like I am not interested. So stew on that for a while.

Posted by: Clarice Feldman | August 08, 2017 at 06:01 PM
regarding teen pregnancy among the LGBT teens, I am going to surmise that drugs and money are involved. A lot of these kids end up on the street, where a girl's or boy's looks are their key asset.
We have a daughter living on the street and hooking is a part of her daily quest for her next fix. Addicts are not good about medications such as birth control. They are worse about taking care of themselves when pregnant or a child thereafter. The sins of the mother are visited upon the child if you will.
This is a part of the dark underside of our world that most people don't want to know about. This touches on a lot of the stuff I work on these days.
Posted by: matt, deplore me if you must | August 08, 2017 at 06:03 PM
The teenagers are trying to prove to themselves and their peers that they're not gay.
Young women have more difficulty with mathematics because of their high levels of estrogen. It decreases in their 30s so their testosterone has more influence on their brains (and their ability to orgasm). Heard this on PBS, so it must be true.

At my tech company, the R&D is about 50/50 on gender. (That is completely by accident, I'd hire a slime mold of it could code). Again, the staff would point out we are a weird group. At Google scale? I could see macro effects of gender career choice there. Add in the impact of lots of India / Asia employees, places where women as servants to men is more normal, and your staff will skew in a hurry. Check genders on tech H1Bs. Might be the missing variable here.

You are not thinking this through. For example, if the question is "When the agreement with Barack Obama and Iran was signed, what was the estimated count on facilities, where were they located, and what did Obama know about this?"
I don't want her going from memory either because I want precise information for a strike or because I don't want her testimony impugned if we are going after Kerry or Obama.
The thing that we are talking about is not settling scores, but national security.

Oh, dear lord. Now that I actually read the HA piece, I find them quoting tweets by David Frum condemning Trump. What an insufferable Canuck asshole.

[Conjecture to be taken with a ton of salt.] If NK says it will tip Guam over, I expect a transport ship will attempt to deliver some “goods” nearby and a missile will simply be decoration.
I also suspect that the ship will be “inspected” some distance away from the island and Fat Boy won’t be happy.

Avoid Tepid Fumes, lyle. Even the ewok, after loyally defending AllahPander far longer than appropriate, has given up.

Dammit
He could look at a chart and get an idea what it was supposed to sound like but couldn't play it accurately until he knew what it was supposed to sound like.

Perhaps I should have ended that with a :-)

Ron Radosh thinks McMasters is the cat's peejays.
Of course Ron Radosh is the cat's pee, so not sure if that helps us.
As for me I'll wait and see because Trump does not seem to be getting my emails.

Matt:
Prayers for your daughter.
MM:
Good decision.
Sometimes we may not be in the situation that we would most desire.
However, nothing lasts forever and change will come.

Mr Porch can't read music either, and neither could anyone in his band.
They got to play at a wedding before Glen Campbell played, out at Clayton Williams's place in West Texas several years ago. They met him during soundcheck and said he was very funny and self-deprecating. On stage, so much so that he was almost like a kid clowning around.
Not long after that, his Alzheimer's diagnosis was announced. Perhaps one's natural inhibitions are the first to fade.

I'm so sorry, Matt.

Double Flush
If McMaster was a drag would a guy like Trump put up with him? As a successful CEO he has to allow independence of management or he gets burdened with too much detail and minutae. Same for Bannon and the others. A certain amount of chaos is allowable and encouraged in dynamic organizations. Its not a politically driven one but a results driven one.
We are seeing the difference between politics and business as a management form.
Why do you think the swamp is all a twitter. Its not the way we do things here and who are you to think you can do it differently? We have standards, you know.

On the topic, I don't know if what Google did was legal, given CA law and the NLRB complaint. I honk companies should be able to hire and fire whoever they want. But Google should be shamed and humiliated for having the audacity to claim they support "diversity."

Yes but Campbell was a studio musician who played with everybody. The only time in the movie it caused a problem was when Sinatra wanted a sort of flamenco riff from an earlier song that Glen was unfamiliar with and couldn't get it right and Frank, not the most patient person in the biz, finally got Tedesco to take his place.
Posted by: Captain Hate | August 08, 2017 at 08:36 PM
True, Cap'n. That makes a difference. Though Campbell managed pretty well. I would bet there were more than a few studio guys in the same boat.

I don't know if you all have seen this. Someone restrain James D., and Captain Hate.

The Donors have responded
GOP Donors Respond to Obamacare Repeal Failure, Withhold Donations
The Republican majority in the Senate is widely viewed to be safe in the 2018 midterms. Nonetheless, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R, Ky.) has been privately warning his colleagues and donors that the GOP's 52-48 majority should not be taken for granted, according to CNN. A campaign donation shortfall could impact the GOP's ability to effectively campaign in states where Democratic senators are vulnerable.
Texas-based donor Doug Deason informed congressional Republicans in June that the "Dallas piggy bank" is closed until they take major action on health care and taxes, the Associated Press reported.
Deason refused to host a fundraiser for Rep. Mark Meadows (R, N.C.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R, Ohio). He further informed House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R, Calif.) his checkbook was closed.
"Get Obamacare repealed and replaced, get tax reform passed," Deason said. "You control the Senate. You control the House. You have the presidency. There's no reason you can't get this done. Get it done and we'll open it [the ‘bank'] back up."
Deason noted he has also encouraged "nearly two dozen major Texas donors to follow his lead," according to the AP.
The NRSC reported $16.2 million in cash-on-hand at the end of June, compared to $17.2 million reported by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to campaign finance filings.

Old Lurker,
Sorry. I didn't know it had been posted. Can't keep up with all of the news.
Well, I doubt anyone has seen this. Paul joseph Watson has found video of President Trump with Tim Russert back in 1999, discussing the problem of a nuclear North Korea and pointing out how dumb the democrats were (and are):

3:52 top of the thread. You skipped over it because...abc...I wouldn't click them either.
I think McConnell's remarks to the Rotary, especially given the demonstrative statistical proof that the Senate does nothing and we all know he is lying, even though every single person who voted for Trump, and who voted to keep the Senate and the House, did so trusting that much much more would have been done by now...but that misunderstanding is a perfect bookend for his getting every R to deny trump the Recess Appointment powers.
He and Ryan can DIAF. Tonight.
Femall.
