Saying that both sides bear responsibility is now the same as declaring a moral equivalence. Or at least, that is the current Trump-bashing narrative and they are sticking to it.
McCain and Romney tweeted something similar but I will use the failing NY Times as an example:
Trump Defends Initial Remarks on Charlottesville; Again Blames ‘Both Sides’
...
WASHINGTON — President Trump reverted Tuesday to blaming both sides for the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., and at one point questioned whether the movement to pull down Confederate statues would lead to the desecration of memorials to George Washington.
Abandoning his precisely chosen and carefully delivered condemnations of the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis from a day earlier, the president furiously stuck by his initial reaction to the unrest in Charlottesville. He drew the very moral equivalency for which a bipartisan chorus, and his own advisers, had already criticized him.
“I think there is blame on both sides,” the president said in a combative exchange with reporters at Trump Tower in Manhattan. “You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.”
So "similar" means "equal"? If (and there is little "If" about it IMHO) the antifa was violently suppressing the free speech and free assembly rights of a different group that is wrong, regardless of whether the other group is 'wronger'. Ordinarily this is not so complicated, but since the other group includes neo-Nazis and KKK sympathizers the normal rules of logic are out the window.
FUN WITH NUMBERS: Trump did succeed in bring the 'alt-left' (reported by CNN to be a made-up word, unlike the rest of our language) into the news. The NY Times editors will eventually get around to defending the antifa as the authentic voice of progressive rage but meanwhile we have this:
Trump Asks, ‘What About the Alt-Left?’ Here’s an Answer
By Linda Qiu Aug 15, 2017
“What about the ‘alt-left’ that came charging at, as you say, the ‘alt-right’?” he asked. “Let me ask you this: What about the fact they came charging — that they came charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.”
Antifa, or anti-fascist activists, certainly used clubs and dyed liquids against the white supremacists, according to the New York Times reporters Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Hawes Spencer, who covered the violence in Charlottesville. Other counterprotesters included nonviolent clergy members.
But there is one stark difference between the violence on the two sides: The police said that James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio drove his car into a crowd and killed at least one person, Heather Heyer. Mr. Fields was charged with second-degree murder.
Sure, this time. At a Sacramento antifa showing (although the Times did not seem to know who they were, of at least, failed to report it) ten people were injured, including two who were stabbed and in critical condition. The Sacramento Bee has more. Last April an antifa member clubbed several Trump supporters with a bike lock, casuing severe injuries. Last June Politico explained why Portland will be burning.
But the key progressive talking point promoted by the Times is this:
But overall, far-right extremist plots have been far more deadly than far-left plots (and Islamist plots eclipsed both) in the past 25 years, according to a breakdown of two terrorism databases by Alex Nowrasteh, an analyst at the libertarian Cato Institute.
White nationalists; militia movements; anti-Muslim attackers; I.R.S. building and abortion clinic bombers; and other right-wing groups were responsible for 12 times as many fatalities and 36 times as many injuries as communists; socialists; animal rights and environmental activists; anti-white- and Black Lives Matter-inspired attackers; and other left-wing groups.
Well, yes. But the past 25 years includes the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, and obviously the 9/11 attacks. From Cato:
Nationalist and Right Wing terrorists are the second deadliest group of terrorists by ideology and account for 228 murders and 6.9 percent of all terrorist deaths. The chance of being murdered in a Nationalist or Right Wing terrorist attack was 1 in 33 million per year. The 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the second deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history after 9/11, killed 168 people and accounted for 74 percent of the murders committed by Nationalist and Right Wing terrorists. Left Wing terrorists killed only 19 people in terrorist attacks during this time but 15 since 2016. Nationalist and Right Wing terrorists have only killed 5 since then, including Charlottesville.
So looking at the last year, or perhaps even the last five or ten, would give quite a different result than "right-wing groups were responsible for 12 times as many fatalities" as left-wing groups.
And not to engage in a false moral equivalence, but killing for domestic political ends is bad even if the other side does more of it. A subtle idea, but perhaps it will break through at the Times.
SINCE YOU ASK: Here is the Maryland Global Terrorism database. The 7/7/2016 Dallas fatal shooting of six police officers is included as "anti-white extremists".
On the nose. T M. Some people just don't deserve free speech, ask Ayers.Or the WaPo which is promoting violence. Or Haberman who apparently can't understand her native tongue.

Of course there's moral equivalence.
Saying some are communists while some are only anarchists [which isn't really true. The "anarchists are marxists too] is like saying some of the other side were nazis but some others were only white supremacists. They're all scum and there aint much hierarchy in levels of scum.
The only differences between the two sides are;
1. Communists predate nazis.
2. Nazis learned most of what they know from their marxist comrades and erstwhile allies.
3. Communists still hold power and are still respectable to one of the two major parties in this country [and now maybe both?].
4. Communism's mountain of corpses is even higher than Hitler's.

"Silent Sam" is the nickname of the Confederate Solider with a rifle that stands on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. He fires his rifle every time a virgin coed walks by, ergo the moniker "Silent Sam."
This story tells us that Sam has been under constant 24 hour monitoring since his Confederate comrade in Durham was toppled. After Durham statue falls, officials keep watch over Silent Sam and other monuments
My guess is that the University will figure out a way to remove Sam rather than have him squashed by Soros's paid Leftist mobs, but even that will probably not be enough so Sam will probably have to be moved off campus from wherever they think he might be safe.
I imagine your campi (sp) will be next.
In the big scheme of things, I think the Duke LaCrosse guys are probably lucky that incident didn't happen now. I could actually see them getting lynched, with Maxine Water's campaigning for the victim, Chrystal Mangum, to become NC's next US Senator.

...Wasn't it just yesterday that we were watching films of the Taliban blowing up multi story tall statues that had stood for thousands of years...and most Americans marveled at how backward those people had to be to do that to their heritage, and how fortunate we are to be Americans where that could never happen? When our children were taught about book burning and Crystal Night, were they too not relieved to be Americans where that could not ever happen? For those fortunate enough to tour shrines in Constantinople and see where Muslims had plastered over Christian artwork once the teams changed sides, again they were probably all happy to be Americans, where that could never happen.

For decades Dems have of course been communist sympathizers. How could they not, given their ideology and its roots? But they would never admit it and would go bonkers if anyone suggested it.
Now, Trump outs them as defenders of not just garden variety Gus Hall type armchair communists, but actual masked, club wielding, openly communist street thugs and people calling for the murder of [and murdering] cops.
And even better, he has unmasked the GOPe dopes who WILL EVEN SIDE WITH COMMUNIST STREET THUGS if that's what it takes to maintain the genteel, dignified butt licking of their Dem superiors they seem to love more than just about anything.

Wiki: "National Socialism (German: Nationalsozialismus), more commonly known as Nazism (/ˈnɑːtsɪzəm, ˈnæ-/[1]), is the ideology and set of practices associated with the 20th-century German Nazi Party, Nazi Germany, and other far-right groups. Sometimes characterised as a form of fascism that incorporates scientific racism and antisemitism, Nazism's development was influenced by German nationalism (especially Pan-Germanism), the Völkisch movement and the anti-communist Freikorps paramilitary groups that emerged during the Weimar Republic after Germany's defeat in First World War."

Kessler said he organized it to "destigmatize white advocacy" and supposed to have 6,000 attendees. He's either an idiot or a plant.

Henry the UNITED STATES allowed slavery for decades. Let's change our name to MALCOLM THE 10TH LAND.

Kessler is almost certainly a plant.
What he says now probably differs considerably from how the rally was actually advertised.

Ralph, he's both. He's not a White Supremecist, he's a LIB, playing a fake ALT-RIGHT guy on TEEVEE.
I asked this a couple days ago. What would the MeffingM report, if the PLAY NAZI'S called themselves....BLACK LIVES MATTER.
Certainly couldn't criticize them.

The Party of Stoopid:
I heard there was a poll taken among Republicans of who they support. Trump or the Turtle. Trump won the poll bigly. It goes to show that popular support is still with Trump but the Vichy Republicans are so hellbent on selling us out they won't even attempt to ride the popular wave

Deb, I think we should have public memorials for men who took their stand for what they considered freedom--at a risk to life and limb that would make us flee to Canada, if we could even imagine it.
What did they call those yuge ancient statues (of non-constitutional monarchs) above the river in LOTR? The Iron Gates?
Posted by: Ralph L | August 16, 2017 at 01:00 PM
If I am remembering correctly, the rally was billed as "Unite the Right" and also had a subtheme of the statue (I imagine to attract locals).
I agree with Porch that this was a staged event. I am positive that the media had a heads up so they could get maximum coverage. Why else would 2 Indianapolis reporters wind up there?

Why is GOPe choosing this hill to die on? Why are all the CEOs quitting Trump panels in a rush of splattered togae? This blatant stupidity is "who they are"? (well, that explains it when I think about it).

Conservative Treehouse had an interesting article about it yesterday.

henry-this is the lead-in to the major Ed Tech weekly newsletter today.
"Chronicling change—as historians or reporters—can be difficult when it feels like the worst of human tendencies has remained unchanged. People spew hate; countries wage wars. The past weekend’s odious calamity in Charlottesville makes it even more tempting to succumb to feelings of helplessness and disillusionment.
Yet doing so only fuels complacency. Silence is consent. The events that transpired have deep roots but can never be the new norm. It is a reminder that there are no final victories against violence, discrimination and prejudice, that the march of time and history does not inevitably lead towards progress. Gains can be reversed.
It’s a wake-up call to the constant vigilance required to learn, to listen, and to lead conversations. It starts with challenging ourselves and others, to find the humility to uphold humanity."
Because a politically steered society and economy that supposedly meets all human needs in the name of racial equity is now a given that no one has a right to reject.
Read the quote in the comments on my blog I put up this morning. No one gets to reject the Marxist Humanist assumptions that the uniparty has agreed to as well as the leaders of every religious faith I am aware of.
