Back in the news:
Glenn Simpson, key figure behind million-dollar 'dossier,' to face questions
A key figure behind the so-called “dossier” featuring uncorroborated and salacious allegations about then-candidate Donald Trump’s ties to Russia will be questioned by investigators from the Senate Judiciary Committee today about the funding and sources for the document.
During last year’s heated Republican primary race, Fusion GPS, a private research firm founded by former Wall Street Journal reporter Glenn Simpson, was initially paid about a million dollars by wealthy Republicans and then later worked for Democrats, all of whom wanted to dig up dirt on Trump and plant negative news stories, according to political operatives.
Simpson, who will appear in a closed session on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, hired the former MI6 agent Christopher Steele to compile the now infamous “dossier,” which alleged that members of the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian agents to damage Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent.
He is a former journalist but unless he is playing the room for laughs I assume he will not claim any "press freedom" right to protect his sources.

OT.
Great Upheaval Chapter 4 was excellent. I have 1 small quibble though.
On page 183 Winik says this of Ben Franklin:
While his circle of friends was among the most fascinating in history---his acquaintances included David Hume, Bishop Berkeley, Adam Smith, Edmund Burke, Voltaire, Noah Webster, Sir Isaac Newton, Jeremy Bentham, Diderot, and Immanuel Kant, as well as the Enlightenment princess Ekaterina Dashkova of Russia, an intimate of Catherine The Great herself---his colleagues often couldn't stand him...
My understanding was Franklin never met Newton tho' he certainly wanted to and mentions it in some writings, and I recall in some history how as a young man in England Franklin said he would frequent a coffee shop where Newton was known to appear from time to time to try to get a glimpse of the great man but I believe he as always unsuccessful. Newton I think was born 1643, Franklin 1706, so it would have been a huge age difference, and at the time (in the 1720's) Franklin would have been a nobody.
Does anyone have an instance of Newton and Franklin ever having met?
Other than that, an excellent laying out of the problem of slavery in the new nation. Chapter 5 tonight!
Good Morning!

Not buying that either. Ain't no captain out there who would allow his ship to get so close to another ship that a "sudden turn of the wheel" would bring him broadside to an ongoing ship at speed.

As usual, the single-cell (groupthink-leftist) slimy amoeba..^troll^ is wrong.
GPS is the favorite of Bush operatives, Romney-Ryan back-stabbers, etc that lie, skim, and coverup their graft, via Glenn Simpson and the other founding character assasins at Fusion. Another WSJ lady parts shill, and former NYTimes liar.
Hillary was forwarded the dossier by RNC seditionists who work just like Lynch, Comey, to keep control of US tax$$ and burden the middle class.
Trump is their fear personified, and their derangement against him--instead of working the edges to appease him--He has become their "biggest mistake" !
The policy of hate, mob rule, condescension is never going to change minds, hearts or souls. Most sentient, fair American voters (legal) don't watch or read the 24/7 media propaganda---nor do they trust Political duds like Ryan, McConnell, Pelosi, etc.
The voters question a Senate "intelligence" committee that kowtows to groups, individuals like Simpson & GPS---allowing the bad actors to set their terms--like what everyday rank and file middle class or poor American, would EVER get that accommodation??
Yet, they remain blind, clueless to their obvious perfidy? No wonder the efforts to rewrite history, and their acceptance of immoral acts of rage--because their (status quo establishment--deepstate?) fears and loathes Trump and those who voted, support Trump ---ONLY !!!

I got distracted because the lady in front of me at the gas station was buying a bunch of tickets and then, after they were printed, found out that she couldn't pay for them with a credit card! Duh! That has been the law since the lotteries went into operation. She said the other Kroger let her do so but I am suspicious that she was telling the truth.
I will tell my daughter to buy a couple when she heads home from work. If we win we are buying a place in the country where she can have an animal sanctuary for cats, dogs, pygmy goats and bunny rabbits.

“I think it took some time before there was a recognition that, without U.S. leadership, the situation in Iraq could completely deteriorate, and the situation in Syria was going to just continue to spiral down farther and farther.”
How in the hell could they not be aware of that? I, midwestern grandma, worried about it because I SAW those guys running around Iraq shooting people from Toyota pick-ups! Everyone knew that Iran was trying to get a foothold.
But it took Washington "some time" to figure this out?

daddy,
According to Walter Isaacson's "Benjamin Franklin: An American Life", he never met Newton but as the master experimenter demonstrated a number of Newton's theories such as electricity in lightning and how dark areas absorbs more heat than light areas. He was a huge fan of Newton, that is for sure but never met him or even had a coffee in the same house as Newton.
How did you like the Ghost Map? Fascinating for me. My great-great grandfather, the "nonpareil bowler" of Victorian cricket fame, died in August 1854 of Cholera during the same period of the book. He was living in Islington though not the west end. More weird.

Rocco, years ago I was at a job site in southern Indiana with three other co-workers, 2 of which had PhDs in EE.
One of the PhDs was truly brilliant but not a lick of common sense. Driving into the little town for lunch we came to a rail crossing where a loco was pushing a couple of covered hoppers under a grain elevator.
Brilliant PhD said that "it wasn't until my wife told me that I knew the train has the right of way".

Back to Powerball: the reason to buy the $3.00 ticket makes more sense when you realize that in a huge jackpot like tomorrow night, there might be several people who get all but one number. They will win something approaching $100,000, so doubling that would be a nice benefit.
It also doubles for the people who win $500 or so with fewer numbers.

Steve Bannon is no longer serving in the White House. He's headed back to Breitbart News to forward his own agenda from the sidelines.
That's good. But you know what? It's nowhere near good enough.
President Trump's White House is still infested with right-wing extremists who have espoused hate and discrimination.
Stephen Miller remains Trump's senior advisor. An investigation into his background uncovered "instance after instance of bigotry, xenophobia, and homophobia."
Sebastian Gorka still works at the White House. He used to work at Breitbart News, just like Steve Bannon. Gorka has been photographed wearing a pin from a Hungarian Nazi-allied group, and has said that people on the left "fake hate crimes...with some regularity."

When we were there in July, it was bragged about by the Harvard tour guide that if you were a minority, family income challenged and in a certain social class it was easier than being a white person with very high GPA and SAT. The easiest way for now for a white person is athletic scholarship but that won't last for long. I guess their future endowment suppliers are not being considered.

Even our tour guide who is Asian studying history admitted so much.
When I lectured at MIT, my Civl Engineering Grad class was 80% Asian. And everyone of them gave me their resumes first thing. If you drive by Pierce Lab you'll see hundreds of Asian kids touring the campus.

Navy seamanship: too many officers, not enough ships.
My father spent his first 8 years with sea duty, 15 out of first 20, then a yuge drawdown in ships in 69-70.
Before they put women on combat ships, enlisted men complained they were taking too many shore billets, which their wives didn't like. Crazy bitch #1 my stepbrother married (just like dear old mom) forced him to quit with 14 years rather than go to sea again.
Wives don't like having women aboard either, I'll bet. Six CPO's pushed out over one fraternizing sex act on USS Hue City.

As I understand it, it is the first time a pre-season number one has played a team ranked as high as number three in its first game of the season.
I think that will settle if they are no. 1 and whether FSU is a legit no. 3 depending on the score and how they play.
Let RG and Beasts settle it on the pontoon boat drinking stingers:)

Anonamom,
So how do you correlate your statement with the fact that 50.08% of the freshman class is minority for the first time? Women? Not a minority anymore. Black? You are reaching.
Check it out. I believe it is majority Asian. And for them to max the SAT? No sweat.

Why would Malia have to take the SATs? And will the professors be grading her or will she be grading the professors?

McConnell has to go, he's so much worse than Paul Ryan or even John McCain. Just one more service that President Trump has provided the nation, exposing that fetid worm McConnell.

Jimmyk--1100 after all that private schooling.

I didn't know that either, JiB. It's all we want right out of gate, I'm sure. On the bright side, if you're going to lose to a highly ranked opponent, the first game of the season is the very best time for it to happen. And by 'you're', I mean FSU. :)

Does anyone know if the left's videos are being de-monetized, too? I read that as demon-itized at first and wondered about the fuss.

Probably close to what Chelsea's was when she was admitted to Stanford.
The children of presidents are not judged on the same standards.

An Asian kid has to be MORE QUALIFIED--have HIGHER SATs--than any other kid at Harvard.
They are NOT admitted in proportion to the number who are objectively qualified by statistics (GPA, SAT) to be admitted.
There are THOUSANDS of Asian kids who are qualified to get in--they LIMIT the number of those qualified kids, just as they did the Jews back in the day.
If they didn't, the entire class would be Lee, Kim, Ngyuen and Yang.
But maybe your point is that they make up a larger portion of the class than they do of the population in the country. That may well be true.

If I had lupus,or any autoimmune disorder, I'd read Plant Paradox and follow it to a T.
Just finished reading it. Worthwhile read. I’ve passed it on to three with the kind of ailments it might help.
Now, ... if I can just get over the avocado.

Did MM post the link for the rally?
I'm relying on her. No TV here.
Oh, I am so not doing that green smoothie thing for breakfast, sbw.
Not even for three days. If I ever get overtly ill, I'll consider it.
In the meantime, my biome has to rely on sauerkraut.
I like "worthwhile read."
Well put.

JIB:
Are legacy students still getting in ahead of more qualified students?
We had an Asian girl waitlisted at Yale and she was top of the class with very high SAT's

If they didn't, the entire class would be Lee, Kim, Ngyuen and Yang.
That seems fair to me, actually.

anonamom,
Exactly what I mean. They are expotentially much more accepted at their per capita postion in overall population.
Its pervasive all through Ivy academics as well as the elite schools like your alma mater, Sandford and others.
