I went to LGF only once. as Johnson was being credited for debunking 60 Minutes' Bush National Guard hit piece when "Buckhead" at Free Republic was the real hero iirc. Never went back.

Jim Eagle

..where the hell did 12/7 come from? s/b 9/11....

Captain Hate

The WTC as you may recall was the scene some years earlier of a bombing attempt that fizzled. You may also recall it was the crack SDNY US Attys who allowed themselves to be played and the main villain escaped the country while they were futzing about with a nincompoop he had persuaded to return twice to the truck rental agency to ge a refund for the truck that carried the bomb.

Yes I remember that. Security matters suffered badly under Slick because he didn't care about them, which the MFM has subsequently whitewashed and obfuscated.

sbw

JimNorCal, curious if you saw my reply to your 12-year-old?

JohnH

As far as playing the where was I game:

On 9/11 I was attending a conference in Quebec. My wife paged me out of a session. Shortly thereafter the conference was ended. A group of us sat in the hotel lounge and watched the towers burn and collapse. We weren't able to fly home but luckily on the way out I was too cheap to spend the company's money to fly the Montreal to Quebec leg ($3,000) for 4 of us so I had a rental. When I called them about dropping it off in the USA, they told me they we waiving the charge due to the situation. We left at 6pm and drove to Madison, Wi arriving about 14:30 the next day.

My only goal in driving was to make it to the Ambassador Bridge before 7am as I knew it was going to be a cluster getting across due to heightened security. And it was.

JohnH

Where did 12/7 come from? A date that will live in infamy!

Jim Eagle

Now I recognize I did mean 12/7. This is what too much wine does to your brain.

Save your brain. Drink Vodka.

daddy

Rocco,

That's odd about the plane with no call sign. It's still up now and it appears its near Anchorage. I rarely look at that site so it beats me. I'm doing nothing but dog walking and Library runs until the 20th.

Jim Eagle

rocco, daddy,

Military. No transponder. nothing new.

daddy

Rocco,

Now there's 2 no callsigns in the vicinity so maybe it's puddle jumpers. Caltech and I rode the bikes 2 days ago to Lake Hood, our main Floatplane Base, and watched dozens of planes coming in and dropping onto the lake just over our heads, while others took off once the wakes calmed down. Very fun.

Jim Eagle

daddy,

How are the brains in the family doing? CalTech and Dartmouth. Not many families in the world can claim that bifecta.

Dave (in MA)

I was driving to work and had the local Blute & Ozone talk show on, hosted by fmr. Congressman Peter Blute and his sidekick John 'Ozone' Osterlind. Blute read a bulletin that a small plane had struck the WTC, indicating that it was an accident, and Osterlind was insistent from the outset that it was terrorism, while Blute was skeptical until the later reports. A year or two later in the wake of an attack against Israelis by Palestinian terrorists, Osterlind said "we have to eradicate these people", leading to him being suspended and later, fired, despite his explanation that he was only talking about terrorists, not all Palestinians. As I recall, the brief respite from political correctness lasted only a few weeks after 9/11.

I got to work and spent the rest of the day like a lot of people, watching TV coverage in conference rooms at work and (mostly unsuccessfully) trying to get news on the web. In the afternoon I took a call from a company where I'd been interviewing, and went outside to talk on my cell in private, being offered the job that I still hold. To this day I find it odd that someone would have been making job offers that afternoon instead of watching the news in shock, though the guy is a Brit.

Jim Eagle

Off to dreamland.

Slaap lekker, tot morgen.

Long day.

Well, by all means; let's bring as many more of those fine citizens in as possible.

Thought I'd mention that on a day when Monday Night Football had it's Season opener, in 3 threads not a single JOMer made a reference to the game at all. Sure there's also 9/11 and Hurricane Irma, but I think that's indicative of how the NFL's self politicization has damaged the heck out of their product.

daddy

Rocco,

When I click on the "No Callsign" just heading south from Anchorage this minute it says its a "Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter," so my guess is it's much older generation propeller-type planes that don'tt have the requirement to have all the bells and whistles installed.

If folks want to know what we're talking about it's this link. Just click on a plane and lots of good info comes up, from to etc. The "No Callsign" lacks about half the info.

jimmyk

It seems that "The Path to 9/11," the movie that the Clintons managed to make disappear, has resurfaced on dailymotion.com. I'm not sure if all the parts are there--it seems to be made up of episode 1 (Parts 1-4) and episode 2(parts 1-3). In any case, it's worth watching if you can, before it gets desaparecido again. This is the first part:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5qbpoq

I've also seen positive things mentioned about NatGeo's "Inside 9/11," though I haven't watched it.

 joan

daddy, your 11:11, about no mention of the NFL season openers. My husband, who has been a football fan since he played high school football, has quit pro football because of Kaepernik (or however you spell his name) and the players who have joined him in kneeling during our anthem. He also used to love golf, played it and watched all of the majors, now he won't watch golf on TV because of the PGA moving some game to Mexico because of Trump, as well as, I think, Ricky Fowler's diss of Trump.

F*ck them all.

 joan

I'm watching a show on the History Channel about the Marriott Hotel, between the towers, that was destroyed 9/11. A few of the people who got out, are telling their stories.

Still breathtaking to watch.

I hadn't ever seen this one, or really understood how horrible their experiences were.

I read 'Sixteen Years On' and decided there was a lot to think about in that article. A few of the people who commented didn't seem to like it. I copied Subotai's, someone Iggy admires (that's just my take, Ig and I have never discussed his opinion of him, just seems that way to me. Also, I liked Ig's comment just afterward.

"The old image of America died on 9/11. The new, more vulnerable and at war America may yet die. We find that we are besieged from within and without, and that those who rule us regardless of party wish to destroy the constitutional system and crush our hopes, our futures, and those of our children and grandchildren.

"I once dreamed that the last years of my life would involve being in the equivalent of the Scholar's Study in the Sun Yat Sen Garden in Vancouver, BC surrounded by ranks of adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren who I had been able to help give a start in life. And maybe to have my wife and my picture up on the wall above the shrine with my parents' and grandparents' where offerings of remembrance are made on Chinese holidays.

"It is a different world, and the best that can be hoped for is to have done my duty before I die. "Be Thou then Truly Resolved . . .""
Subotai Bahadur

 joan

I've been angry all day about this npr article. My reaction is that I wasn't taught in grade or high school about how to feel about Pearl Harbor, or Auschwitz or Treblinka or Belsen or the German Luftwaffe firebombing Manchester, England, or other English cities. We just read the facts -- none of our teachers or adults worried about Japanese-phobia.

http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2017/09/11/549532978/teaching-sept-11-to-students-who-were-born-after-the-attacks-happened

"Duckworth found that if Sept. 11 is addressed in classrooms, too often teachers don't want to tackle the complex, often ugly aftermath at home and globally: the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; the Patriot Act and civil liberties; radical Islam and Islamophobia.

"I think it's very disturbing," Duckworth says, "especially during this presidential election cycle. Islamophobia is just sort of free-floating out there in the air."

"If we don't address Sept. 11 in all its complexity, she says, stereotypes and misinformation will continue."

JimNorCal

Yes, curious.

I drove right by the WTC around 6 to 8 minutes before the first plane hit--and i mean right in front of WTC 7.

I was on the Westside HWY in the 20s when the first plane hit.

I let everyone go at noon, and left at 1PM.

I could not get home until around 7PM (usually take about 40 minutes to an hour).

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

Where was I on 9/11?

The power went out about 3 and came back about 7:30. Went out to find something for dinner as I had fallen asleep in the semi darkness... only things open are a Waffle House, IHOP and da da da Olive Garden. Even the Qts and Racetracs are closed. We chose Olive Garden and it took an hour to get a table. 2 waitresses, 2 managers, 2 cooks in the whole place but they did a yeoman's job of taking care of the crowd.

Now where was I on 9/11/01?

Just had gotten out of the shower in preparation to go to ING to sign my paperwork to start a new job. Phone call came in about 9:30 that the paperwork would have to wait as they were closing for at least that day. Got so engrossed in the coverage it was about noon or 1 o'clock when I realized that I was sitting on the couch still with a towel wrapped around me and had been all morning. The paperwork was put on hold later in the week and by the end of the month all their new hires were told that they were in a hiring freeze. Never did start that job.

Barbara

Islamophobia?

What about the Ameriphobia of the self-righteous left?

This is the thing that taints every news story. It's what supporters of President Trump understand. When he spoke of Making America Great Again it was to this dissing of America for simply existing and defending herself that he spoke. It was against the notion that if you defend your country, there is something wrong with you.

Ralph L

Didn't Rathergate put Powerline on the map, too?

I was at work and got to listen to Katie Couric drone on. It's stuck in my head that the South tower was hit first, but I must have been looking at video from the East River side. The south was hit second but further down, so it fell first, or am I screwed up?

My sister found out several years later that her boyfriend (a Yaley) from the early 80's died talking to his wife in the second tower instead of evacuating. She (Paula? Berry) became a leader in the survivors' group that advised the memorial people, or something like that.

Does anyone know how full the new complex is?

Ralph L

I watched a good chunk of the extended Bannon interview on Rose's PBS show tonight. Rose spoke less than usual (which isn't saying much), and there was only one stretch that I'd call obnoxious (on Rose's part).

Still raining here, so twenty hours in. My trees all still upright. Some small scattered outages.
My friend in Charleston who lives three houses off Bay Ave sent video at five last night showing water up to the second house, and it rained for another ten hours there. They also had storm surge.

I am truly amazed that my father--who ran in his district's R primary in 1990 for US Rep, was a delegate to national RNC convention---didn't set me right. Maybe he figured I'd come around in good time...

Thinking about it though right now--Dad ran in to the GOPe way back in 1990. Despite a long history of local involvement--school board, county commission---and being good looking and having a great back story--
"it wasn't his time" was what he was told by the powers that be.

He ran any way.

For whatever reason I was immune to the stupidity in those dipshit books. I'm not sure why because I lived through gas lines in the DC area, complete with even/odd license plate days, and knew that really sucked. Maybe it was because I and my family knew a bunch of engineers who, with their slide rules, seemed to be really smart about the big picture sciency things and they weren't running around like a bunch of shrieking ninnies. The people that were, like Paul Ehrlich, just struck me as sketchy twitches.

Maybe I've just got a good internal bullshit detector. The first time I saw and heard candidate Slick on tv I knew he was trash. It amazes me that purportedly smart people can't see that. Or see it and like it.

Porchlight

Sundance's sensationalism gets a little old after awhile.

Jim Eagle

Porch,

He might get a little breathless at times but he is spot on in regard to Central Florida (away from Orlando metroplex). Very rural, very poor and very pragmatic. They are most likely last on the priority lists for power, fuel, food, rescues, recovery, etc. and that is not tolerable.

That has to be fixed and its up to FEMA, the State and other agencies. Lets level all the systems in place that help after a disaster.

Jane

They better get some fuel in by Thursday! Although I doubt I get to be demanding!

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Porchlight,

Sundance pre-Irma was totally doom-mongering. Thankfully, he was wrong about the severity of the storm. Of course some areas are harder hit/more difficult to help quickly than others.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Porchlight,

The only reason the massive storm surge didn't occur is because of the huge cold front that hit Irma from the northwest. (At least this is my understanding of the science.)

Governor Scott was adamant that it was a dangerous hurricane or he wouldn't have evacuated so many areas.

Sorry, I simply disagree with you on this one. I would rather someone go a little overboard on stating dangers than be cavalier about them and be overtaken by events.

The contrast between Irma and Katrina responses backs up my opinion.

JimNorCal, rebroadcast for your listening pleasure:

JimNorCal: Our 12 year old asked me why we can't end the war. I didn't have a good answer.

Evolution, son. In nature, it is not always the biggest and strongest animal that wins, but one that finds a weakness and exploits it.

Look at all the wars in history. Weapons evolved, war changed, all the way up to Atomic bombs. Mother Nature is exploring new ways to fight. Today, the battlefield is the mind -- whether through terror or propaganda.

We are just learning how to arm ourselves to defend against them. The good news is that we can.

The better news is that we will, because we forged sound principles by mining history for ideas and processes that work sensibly for everyone who cares to support them.

Now our job is to show everyone how they work and why, and defend against those who choose to fight anyway.

Marlene, I heard that we had power as of yesterday. Debby, Kiwi and I hope to head down Thursday if gas is restored and the roads are open. We are going 84 to 81 to avoid all the traffic. There is an app - I think called something like "go gas " that I can't get on my phone but I hope Debby can that tells you where you can find gas.

When are you thinking of leaving?

Marlene

Jane, eventually you have to get on 75,that will be the fun part! We're leaving Nov. 1st.

henry

Porch, central FL got hit harder than expected.

Right now the problems over much of FL are:

no electricity
boil water orders (uh oh, see above)
no fuel (gas sta has no power, no pumps for fuel anyway)
no food (groceries need power to safely store food)

That puts it all on the electric utilities to get things fixed pronto. They are prioritizing: lines to their power plants, local police/ fire, hospitals, water utilities, areas with grocery stores, then the rest. All assuming they don't have to rebuild the grid (ie. central Florida at least, maybe Marco Island and the glades areas).

That is why I need to know estimates by areas. I may need to fill a bunch of jerry cans with gas, then run to Naples and extract family.

Jim Eagle

Our bridge across the ICW won't open until later today. And we didn't get hit that hard on the First Coast. Jacksonville is still in recovery mode from the storm surge and South Flagler Beach got the worse of the storm surge.

marlene,

Someone reported that Turtle Shack, Golden Lion and JimmyD's got hit pretty bad and will have to reconstruct. Palm Coast across the ICW still without power.

Jim Eagle

henry,

For Janet ...

“What might be the next step in evolution?”

“You can’t get any bigger than a civilization. You can’t get more powerful.”
“If you can’t get more powerful physically, the next evolution can’t be physical. In nature, though, bigness isn’t the only answer. How does Mother Nature compete?”
“She finds a weakness and competitively evolves to exploit it. Strengths do not protect from what finally undermines competitors.”
“After the clash of progressively larger estates, states, nations, and civilizations, expect a shift toward the clash of core ideas because those ideas are viral. They can travel across geo-political boundaries with ease penetrating borders of nation-states that are porous to them. Viral ideas can use experience and history from within to temper one’s wisdom and culture. That’s why typewriters were registered in some pre-computer Balkan states and why later the Soviet state came to realize that a country with computers could not be restrained. Individuals motivated by strong ideas can move both people and great nations, not always constructively.”

Sundance criticizes the focus on the coasts, but the coasts were also his focus before the storm. Seems like he can't have it both ways. He's either smarter than everyone else or he's not.

Not trying to minimize people's very real troubles, just saying that the constant self-aggrandizing of this person in particular becomes tiresome.
