By choosing military men to be the tip of the spear for solving this problem
Colin Powell

OL's post raises the question -- who is really the dark side? The Dems, the Left, as represented by Pelosi and Schumer? Or Ryan and McConnell. Or are they all an unholy alliance of darkness?

And someone talk OL down from the ledge. Trump says things all the time. And then reverses himself. The ultimate deal -- not the posturing -- is what matters.

Of course, it doesn't bother me if Trump is ineffective...He does less damage that way. But I do believe the consequences of him being ineffective will be ugly for MAGA and GOP.

Jane

OL, it's the same as David French except the Opposite

I've been up 27 hours so I'm
Incoherent - even more so than usual.

Thomas Collins

If the Washington Times's report on Trump's position is accurate, Appalled, I'd say it's more like Nixon going to North Korea. If the Wall is not part of the Dream deal, the Wall won"t be built.

Appalled

TC:

I don't disagree. I just don't put much stock in what the President says right now. He'll reconsider after he takes Bannon's phone call.

Texas Liberty Gal

Trump will lose a lot of his base if he lets the Dreamers stay-its a slap in the face to everyone who went through the proper procedures to come here legally. I for one will really be upset if he lets them stay. I'm keeping in mind what MM said about how Trump operates. But his tweet this morning concerns me.

fdcol63

We can develop atomic weapons and put men on the moon (just think about the MONEY and TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS those took!), but we can't deport people who are here illegally or build a border wall.

If this is true, perhaps we're not a great country anymore after all.

jimmyk

there will be a full court press to reinstate everything dealt away, one piece at a time.

Not sure if the pun was intended, but I'm seeing 9th Circuit rulings declaring anything Trump does short of open borders as unconstitutional. Then we go through the same tortured process that we've seen with the "travel ban."

hrtshpdbox

Come legally or get sent home. Why is that an impossibility?

Because the President doesn't want it to and there's not nearly enough votes in Congress to make it happen. I don't think this sticking point (that every single person who was brought in by their parents must be deported) is at all important anyway; if illegal immigration is stopped going forward, and if people who came here as adults illegally are deported, and if people who were brought here as children by their illegal parents are deported if they have committed crimes, that should be enough of a win for anyone who is concerned about illegal immigration.

Barbara

In his 60 Minutes interview, Bannon alluded to the problems that the President faced in forming his administration. With few exceptions, most of the people who worked on the Trump campaign were not Washington insiders, and those who were proved useless when it came to getting the administration up and running. Only "Trump's Generals" seemed to know their way around the system having been part of it during their careers.

Even with the majority in the Senate, McConnell dragged out the approval of the President's appointments beyond anyone's expectations. It soon became clear that if he were to have his agenda implemented, he would have to return to campaign mode and take his case to the people. He's done that and will have tocontinue to do so.

The President tried to work with the Congress and let the leadership determine the order in which the President's proposals would be brought forward. Then they stalled and quibblesd before eventually failing to accomplish anything after months of delay.

Cynic that I am, I believe this was intentional. Couple that with the DOJ's multiple screw ups and the Mueller investigation, they thought they had the President in a corner. They've essentially said, "No," to just about everything the President wants. So, now he has to go around them and perhaps make some concessions to the Democrats to get anything done. It's inescapable and does not mean that President Trump is forsaking his promises.

Once again the burden falls to the voters to hold these politicians accountable for this treachery, for that's what it is. We've won a few battles, but the war goes on.

One question, Codevilla, says that Moore is the GOPe's candidate in Alabama. Does anyone know if this is accurate?

jimmyk

I'd like to see no path for citizenship also, but that seems to be a pipe dream.

Sue

I have an idea. For all of those brought here illegally by their parents, for every DACA that gets to stay, a parent or other illegal relative has to go. So, if parents were really coming here for a better life for their children, they will gladly return to their country, which they have indeed lived in and some of their children have no memory of living there.

Old Lurker

Barbara "One question, Codevilla, says that Moore is the GOPe's candidate in Alabama. Does anyone know if this is accurate?"

What, at this point, does it matter?

Thomas Collins

TLG, I don't think deporting the Dreamers was ever a realistic possibility. However, I did think that Trump could cut a deal that included the Wall and other security enhancements. If this morning's reports are true, that's no longer the case. Appalled, I agree that Trump says a lot, but the reports are that he is speaking about this in the context of a deal, which to me makes it more unlikely he will change his mind. I would love to know what specific security enhancements Schumer and Pelosi agreed to.

fdcol63

Who needs to be a US citizen when you can vote in our elections, go to our schools, serve in our military, get welfare and other economic benefits, demand the same respect from actual citizens, and receive all the other legal rights and privileges of citizenship WITHOUT being a citizen? LOL

It's absurd that we're even having to have this discussion, but that's another proof of the upside down Bizarro World we now live in.

Thomas Collins

But before we start talking about Trump not keeping faith with his clear promises, let's keep in mind that the Congressional Republicans' fiddling and diddling have left Trump in a position in which he must deal with Chuck and Nan.

rse

Since I have read the 2014 bipartisan WIOA and warned about it, there are extensive benefits guaranteed under it simply because English is not the primary language.

My reaction at the time was that we were granting economic citizenship to all these illegals even if they could not vote. These plans and the required local and state councils are all being put in place as we speak.

Old Lurker

Trump "Well, we want to get massive border security..."

"MASSIVE" and "BEAUTIFUL" and "YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT"

Fem. It is bullshit.

Go sell it to the Eskimos.

Barbara

What, at this point, does it matter?

Just curious, OL.

TC " let's keep in mind that the Congressional Republicans' fiddling and diddling have left Trump in a position in which he must deal with Chuck and Nan."

That's bullshit too, TC. All of that was known when we decided that while it might all be impossible at this late stage, Trump, who built an ice rink in a weekend, was the only one of the 17 dwarfs who had a shot at it.

He blew it and now nobody fears him or that monster behind the door.

Deal with it. You might want to put some ice on that.

Janet the expert 🚬

Amen, fdcol63.

Imagine if the MFM & Congress gave this type of amplification & full court press for situations facing American citizens.

If Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, etc. are so god-forsaken awful, hopefully we are not sending those countries ANY foreign aid. Not one dime.

2 minute duda

Trump at heart is a merchandiser who was born to have his own spot on the home shopping network.

Slowly but surely he's beginning to realize that right-wing policies are complete and utter shit and impossible to sell.

So, he's sampled Democrats policies......just a sample and literally overnight the buzz is positive and he senses there's a real yearning among the majority of Americans for what the Dems are pushing.

Ladies and gentlemen....I give you......the Democratic President of the United States,Donald J.Trump.

Old Lurker

TLG “massive border security would have to be agreed to..."

While Humpty bragged to Alice that words mean only what he wants them to mean and when he says them, even we dummies knew that a physical wall was something immutable and tangible. THAT is why that promise was so important if we were ever again to believe that our politicians would deliver anything they promised.

Advantage: Humpty Dumpty.

Threadkiller

Trump will lose a lot of his base if he lets the Dreamers stay

Only if the base truly is the uneducated mob portrayed on the MFM.

If he lets them stay with the same permissions given to them as a Visa/Greencard holder, big whoop.

Is he plants an citizenship medal on their chest, yeah he is toast.

Does anyone really believe the latter at this early stage?

As far as military service, IIRC for as long as I have been alive it has been a pathway to this country. DACA asked for actual identification for the possibility to stay. Once here and in DACA they could join with their name, not a stolen one.

Ann Coulter would be proud of the hair on fire reactions so far.

fdcol63

The problem with Chuck and Nancy is that they are lying snakes in the grass who have the power of the MSM and the fecklessness of the GOPe to help them.

They will lie to your face, get the MSM to help them advance their lies and agenda to the public, and then rely on the weaklings (and UniParty co-horts) in the GOPe to cave in.

It's just a steady, continual slide to the Left (what they call "progress") toward Leftist authoritarianism and tyranny.

Appalled

TC:

On immigration, Trump can just enforce the law as written, and pretty much force people to come to the table as a result. That makes his bargaining position a whole lot better than on almost any other issue. And, if he wins his wall, he does something the GOPe hasn't been able (or wanted) to do. My current theory on Trump is that he is now out to dislodge the GOPe for good and all, and that his actions are designed with that purpose. If that means making polite noises right now -- he'll do that, because he really believes a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

I do Trump the courtesy of not thinking him stupid about the sources of his power, which, as Old Lurker says above, is an alliance of Miss Marples and Old Lurkers. He needs the OL's to stay on board, which means he needs that Wall (and not a fake one).

Of course, the desire to get somebody to say something nice about them in the failing New York Times has driven many another person to the wilderness of a strange new respect. But Trump isn't that guy, is he?

Old Lurker

TK "Trump will lose a lot of his base if he lets the Dreamers stay

Only if the base truly is the uneducated mob portrayed on the MFM."

TK, today I call bullshit on everything. I am in his Base and I am educated and intelligent and well read and a student of history and on and on, and he is losing me quickly. True - I got nowhere to go - but that does not mean I can't look at Trump in eight months and observe "I saw what you did there".

A couple of months ago I posted about our friend Will, the 7-yr-old cousin of one of WonderGirl's classmates. Will was born with an underdeveloped right side of his heart, and has been on the transplant list since. We thought back in June that he had a heart, but it didn't work out, and we've been waiting as Will has been fighting for his life.

Last night they got the call, and his dad posted a few minutes ago that Will's heart is out and they are starting to put in the donor heart. Please, if you pray, pray for Will, for his family (it's WonderGirl's friend's birthday, too!) and for the donor and his family, as well as the first donor's family.

OL,

I can't say that he blew it - at least not at this point. He tried to use the existing system, and was rebuffed. No one expected that at least not to the extent we've seen.

It's become all out war between the leadership and the White House. That war extends to us, the people who elected President Trump.

So, these SOBs get round one. There are more rounds in this fight. I know that I'm mixing metaphors here, but you get the idea.

fdcol63

Personally, I don't think we need an actual, physical wall.

An electrified chain-link fence, snipers every 1km, 50m of landmines in a No-Man's zone, armed drones flying up and down the whole line, and electronic sensors to detect movement and tunneling - with the serious authority and will to use deadly force - is really all that's necessary.

That, and harsh criminal charges for employers hiring illegals ... and the elimination of the frigging welcome mat we currently have in place .... would probably do a lot to solve the problem of new illegals coming in and provide better security.

That would just leave the problem of those already here.

I have no problem deporting them. I really don't care about the fact that they were brought here by their parents. Boo-frigging hoo. Cry me a river. Don't split up families. Deport them all.

But if that's too harsh for you, then just give them permanent legal resident status, with NEVER any right to vote or receive benefits that should be reserved for citizens. And they can NEVER, EVER own property or start their own businesses in the US .... until they become citizens, by getting in the back of the line behind all of those who have diligently been following our immigration laws.

jimmyk

All of that was known when we decided that while it might all be impossible at this late stage, Trump, who built an ice rink in a weekend, was the only one of the 17 dwarfs who had a shot at it.

OL, while I sympathize with your ledginess, I think this goes too far. First, it seems likely that he was the only one who had a shot. That didn't mean he would succeed, just that he had a shot. Second, the game isn't over yet. Trump dealing with the Dems was a shot across the bow at Ryan and McConnell. Tax reform and deregulation are ongoing.

And finally, and most important: Hillary is not President.

JimNorCal

fdcol: "Personally, I don't think we need an actual, physical wall."

The importance of the wall always was as a symbol in bricks and mortar that the old rules are gone and new rules apply. Every sort of virtual wall, e-verify this or that, read my lips etc last only until the next guy shows up for work.

Not getting the wall therefore means two things: 1) we have no new rules and any tweaks are transitory just like always, and 2) Trump cannot deliver what he clearly promised his voters.

I hope you're right about Trump and existing immigration law, Appalled.

OL, Ryan was sublimely ineffectual in dealing with the Freedom Caucus, and McConnell was the same in deal with the Duke and Duke GOPers, on prepaid health care reform. On the debt limit, Trump couldn't have McConnell and Ryan doing the inside baseball maneuvers when what was needed was action on hurricane relief funding. On immigration, if Trump doesn't deal with Schumer and Pelosi, Ryan and McConnell will sell him down the river in any event. On tax legislation, Trump will need Dem support. On federalmjudge appointments and regulatory relief within the control of the POTUS, Trump is being faithful to his MAGA agenda. This is not a MAGA Congress, and Trump recognizes that.

common man

Judging by the commercials we get due to picking up Mobile tv stations here, I would say its not going that well for Luther Strange for Senate. fdcol63

OL, I hear you.

Personally, I don't think ANYTHING is going to change with the current political and media structure.

Things will only change when those of us who voted for Trump get as active as BLM and Antifa and all the others who riot and protest.

At some point, we will have to take some days off of work, get off of our couches, and rise up ..... and demand that we are heard ..... en masse ..... in some way that can not be misrepresented or misinterpreted or mischaracterized or misunderstood by everyone.

Doesn't necessarily have to be violent, but it definitely has to be more assertive and vigorous and organized, even though it may spring up from the grassroots. (I know ... we saw that with the Tea Party Movement, but it died out too quickly, as we sought to become more active politically).

I fear that elections just ain't doing it anymore.

I have no problem deporting them. I really don't care about the fact that they were brought here by their parents. Boo-frigging hoo. Cry me a river. Don't split up families. Deport them all.

If the logic that a parent's illegal act should not result in the children suffering, why doesn't that also apply to other illegal acts?

If a parent has been embezzling money from his employer (which he uses to buy a nice house, a car, etc), surely his children shouldn't lose their home - the only home they've ever known!- when he's caught and punished, right?

Or if a parent drives drunk and kills somebody. Or commits any one of a thousand other crimes that would result in them losing their job, their future employability, most of their money and their freedom.

And, equally, if a parent, say, commits the unspeakable act of working for Scott Walker, surely their children shouldn't be punished by being held at gunpoint in pre-dawn SWAT raids ordered against the parent, right?

Barbara

As to Barbara's question, McTurtle's PAC is funding Strange's campaign.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Home.

To answer al of this hysteria:

1. Trump uses A-B testing.
2. Trump NEVER said he was going to deport all of the Dreamers.
3. You all are privileged to see this deal making IN PUBLIC instead of behind closed doors and then announced as a fait accompli. People are having to go on record with their positions and Pelosi and Schumer have been revealed as trying to pull a fast one.
4. We are way farther ahead on immigration enforcement than at any time in at least the last 16 years, maybe since Reagan.
5. Portions of the Wall which are revamping of fences to sturdier structures is already occurring, prototypes for the 4 most acceptable bidders are being constructed, and a final decision on the contractor will be made later this year.
6. Money has already been appropriated through the House for the first phase. It is waiting in the damn Senate.
==================================

The above are facts. My personal opinion is that way too many people fall prey to the media's spin on all of this, including not only the MSM but the alternative media, who are manipulating opinion for a variety of reasons.

Your choice on this is to express your opinion to Congress and the President and get the best deal we can get.

Deserting the President over this ONE issue, which three years ago no one was even discussing, is counterproductive.

Do you want a secure border? Do you want immigration put under control? Or do you want to desert the President and vote for ....who? Ted Cruz? Paul Ryan? Michelle Obama? Please.

The ONLY reason we are even discussing immigration is because President Trump brought it up!! He has kept a bunch of his promises so far, despite being assured by "inside sources" that he was NOT going to leave TPP, that he was NOT going to leave the Paris accords, that he probably would appoint his sister to the Supreme Court, that Mitt Romney was going to be Secretary of State, blah, blah, blah.

For years and years I have been told by all sorts of pundits that conservatives operated on reason, not emotion. I think we can put an end to THAT theory.

Pfft.

I'm sure President Trump is SHOCKED and OUTRAGED that The Slithering Croc reptile (Schumer) and the Scorpion (Pelosi galore) lied and turned on him after he attempted to work with him.

We need a complete turnover of these pampered loads who have remained isolated from working for a living.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

What was Trump's position on "Dreamers" during the campaign?

sbw

As an outsider, I would probably give DACA candidates non-permanent non-resident status that allows them to be in the United States long enough to apply for citizenship using the standard method for their home countries.

They would not be able to jump in front of the line.

Then add criteria that would count towards approval or against approval. Education, occupation, criminal record, economic independence, etc.

Just for the record, one reason why I and some others keep beating this drum is in the hopes that some people do lurk here from DC and care what is being said among the people who voted for Trump. I believe that it is an undisputed fact that McConnell is an ignoramus. Ditto for Ryan.

I found it hysterically funny that McConnell couldn't wait to run to the enemy's propaganda sheet, the NYT, to boast that he put some secret decoder language in the disaster relief/debt ceiling bill that would allow him to extend the limit for whatever additional months he wanted.

Yeah, right, Mitch. You just do that. You're so clever. Talk about juvenile! The horse has already left the barn, Senator. The President got what he wanted - disaster relief. Maybe somebody should tell him.

This is the crowd that the President has to deal with. Men of no principles or honor. Sneak behind your back and thumb your nose at your opponent. McConnell is a loser. I still have faith that the President will prevail now that he knows the lay of the land.

If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. But I'd like to see this play out a little more. What other choice is there? I'm not for abandoning the President. It would serve no purpose at this point, IMO.

I'm not dissatisfied or abandoning Trump.

I just feel that there's a limit to what he can do. To what ANY one person can do, with the UniParty and federal bureaucracy (Deep State) arrayed against him or her and doing their best to undermine those efforts at reform.

At least without a majority of people willing to take to the streets to protest IN FAVOR OF those policies, instead of remaining complacent and silent and hoping for the best.

Old Lurker

Iggy, you are going to have to do a Clintonesq parsing to get to the bottom of that.

During the campaign he promised to End Daca and Build the wall. While he was not absolutely clear on who would have to leave, he was adamant that Amnesty like promised by Rubio and Jeb! and Graham was out of the question.

What he has done is "End" Daca but sometime over the rainbow after Congress has had time to rename it something else and Trump has signaled he will sign on to the new definition. And as of today anyway, the Wall is off the table.

So you decide the answer to your 11:28 question.

You know my answer, and I am baffled at anyone who reads it as "Promises Kept".

The debate now, especially here, is are we more likely to win the next round in this game of Russian Roulette if we demand Trump live up to the take no prisoners image we elected, or whether we are better off letting him slowly turn up the gas on this pot we find us frogs in? If the latter, you are just hoping he will turn the heat off in time.

Porch: Trump endorsed Strange, the incumbent, weeks ago.

Well, there is endorse, and then there is endorse-endorse. Not to mention endorse-endorse-endorse.

Was that when he was trying to work Mitch for something? It was before inviting Dems for dinner.

I don't think Trump would mind if Moore won.

All that matters is Trump's 8 months...

And as of today anyway, the Wall is off the table.

I don't believe this will stand. I'm not being a Pollyanna but at the same time, what can the President do if Congress refuses to act? He is taking his message straight to the people - bypassing the MSM!
Can he single-handedly decree XYZ? (that's obama's M.O.)

He has stood in front of thousands of Americans and heard them cheer when he talked about the wall. I just cannot believe because he had a short meeting with the evil dems he suddenly has forgotten all of those people or thinks they would be ok with no wall.

Time will tell...
